International School Bangkok

The International School Bangkok is a private PK-12 American-style school in the Pak Kret District of Nonthaburi Province, Thailand in the Bangkok Metropolitan Area. It is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in the USA.

ISB history

ISB opened in 1951. Its initial enrollment was 50 children of United Nations and U.S. diplomats. First located on Rajadamri Road,it was known as the International Children's Center (ICC). ISB expanded to provide both primary and secondary education for English-speaking children in Bangkok. In 1960 ISB moved from the U.S. Embassy-owned grounds to Sukhumvit Soi 15. A few years later, ISB opened a second campus on Viphavadi Rangsit road, but it closed in the mid-70s with the American drawdown from Vietnam. Finally In 1992, International School Bangkok was relocated from Soi 15 to the present US $25-million campus in the Pak Kret District, Nonthaburi Province, that it owns and maintains itself, and that consists of a separate elementary, middle, and high schools interwoven into one Thai-style complex. ISB has students enrolled from more than fifty countries, which promotes rich intercultural experiences.

Harrow International School, Bangkok

Harrow International School, Bangkok (Head Master, Mr Michael Farley) is a British independent day and boarding school in Don Muang District, Bangkok.^[1] It was established and gained its license to operate in Thailand in 1998 in association with Harrow School (London, UK).The School has 1,500 students, both boys and girls, ranging in age from 6 months to 18 years, representing 37 different nationalities.The School is divided into two day schools – Upper and Lower – and bases its education on the National Curriculum of England. Harrow Bangkok also specialises in high-quality boarding provision for students from Year 5 upwards. The majority of teaching staff are recruited from the United Kingdom, Ireland and the Commonwealth. The current Head Master, Michael Farley, joined the School in 2012.

History of Harrow International School

Harrow International School was founded in 1998 and first operated as a language school at Riverine Place Condo, though soon moved to Bangkok Garden Condo in downtown Bangkok. The first headmaster was Mr Stuart Morris, who had previously been headmaster of a school in Malaysia. Mr Morris oversaw a huge period of growth for Harrow International School as the school role rose to over 700 by 2002. Mr Morris left Harrow in 2002 to found Shrewsbury International School.[citation needed] Originally the school was in Yan Nawa District.[2]

International school

An international school is a school that promotes international education, in an international environment, either by adopting a curriculum such as that of the International Baccalaureate, Edexcel or Cambridge International Examinations, or by following a national curriculum different from that of the school's country of residence.

Overview

These schools cater mainly to students who are not nationals of the host country, such as the children of the staff of international businesses, international organizations, foreign embassies, missions, or missionary programs. Many local students attend these schools to learn the language of the international school and to obtain qualifications for employment or higher education in a foreign country.

History

The first international schools were founded in the latter half of the 19th century in countries such as Japan, Switzerland and Turkey. Early international schools were set up for families who traveled, like children of personnel of international companies, international organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGO), and embassy staff. The schools were established with the people and organizations having large interests in the hosting nation: for instance, American diplomats and missionaries often set up schools to educate their children; children of American military and army families often attended Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS); French diplomats and business families founded similar schools based on the French curriculum.

International School (Bellevue, Washington)

International School (IS) is a 6th–12th school in the Bellevue School District. The mascot for Bellevue International School is the Great Titan, and the logo is a Greek tripod with an ascending flame. International school is not a traditional international school with students from across the globe, but has a mission of instilling "global citizenship" in its students. Admission is based on a lottery system. Parents must enroll their Bellevue-area fifth graders into the lottery. Siblings of students already enrolled get priority, and then names are drawn from the general pool for the remaining spots. International School is not affiliated with the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), and if students want to participate in sports, they can do so at their "home school" (the Bellevue School District high school that corresponds with their attendance area).

History

International School was founded in 1991 by Bellevue teachers. Funded with a competitive $300,000 grant from the "Schools for the 21st Century" Commission, the six were granted a half year of release time to develop and recruit for the program. International School opened with 150 sixth and seventh graders in the fall of 1991, housed in an old elementary school. Later the school was moved to its current location in an unused junior high. In 2002 a short documentary on the history of the school with the title The World of International School was written by Kristen Rosenfeld. This documentary provides a glimpse based on primary sources into the origins and development of the school in its first ten years and helps explain why the school has been successful.

International School (Buffalo, New York)

International School 45 is an elementary school in Buffalo, New York. It is located at 141 Hoyt Street and serves Grades PK through 6. The current principal is Ms. Lynn Piccirillo.

History

School 45 was constructed in 1889 to provide additional classrooms for the growing Upper West Side of Buffalo. The original address was 402 Auburn Avenue. An addition was constructed in 1924 to provide more space, before a new and larger building was built in 1971, connected to the 1924 addition. This new building caused the original building to be destroyed and the address to change to Hoyt Street.

Originally a community school, School 45 began to take in a large amount of students from the city's West Side, which has a large immigrant population. The school housed Grades PK through 8, but due to overcrowding, the school's seventh and eighth graders began attending Lafayette High School beginning with the 2011-2012 school year.

Michael F. Farley

Michael Francis Farley (March 1, 1863 – October 8, 1921) was a U.S. Representative from New York from 1915 to 1917.

Biography

Farley was born in Birr, County Offaly, Ireland on March 1, 1863. He immigrated to the United States in 1881, and lived in Brooklyn and New York City. Farley became the owner and operator of a tavern on West 22nd Street in New York City, and was later president of the Wine and Liquor Dealers Association of New York County and Manhattan's Central Association of Liquor Dealers.

He was elected to the 64th United States Congress as a Democrat, and served from March 4, 1915 to March 3, 1917. Farley was defeated for reelection in 1916 by Fiorello H. La Guardia.

In Congress Farley was a proponent of the 1916 Gore-McLemore Resolution. This resolution followed Germany's announcement that it would sink armed enemy merchant ships without warning, and was intended to prevent the United States from being drawn into World War I. As introduced, the Gore-McLemore Resolution asked American citizens not to travel on the armed vessels of any belligerent, and asked for the Secretary of State to refuse to issue passports to Americans intending to travel on such ships. President Woodrow Wilson opposed the resolution, arguing that travel restrictions were an infringement on the rights of individual Americans, and it was tabled by both the House and Senate.

Bangkok

Bangkok (English pronunciation: /ˈbæŋkÉ’k/) is the capital and most populous city of Thailand. It is known in Thai as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (à¸?รุงเทพมหานคร, pronounced  [krÅ«Å‹ tʰêË?p mahÇŽË? nákʰɔ̄Ë?n]) or simply  Krung Thep . The city occupies 1,568.7 square kilometres (605.7 sq mi) in the Chao Phraya River delta in Central Thailand, and has a population of over 8 million, or 12.6 percent of the country's population. Over 14 million people (22.2 percent) live within the surrounding Bangkok Metropolitan Region, making Bangkok an extreme primate city, dwarfing Thailand's other urban centres in terms of importance.

Bangkok traces its roots to a small trading post during the Ayutthaya Kingdom in the 15th century, which eventually grew in size and became the site of two capital cities: Thonburi in 1768 and Rattanakosin in 1782. Bangkok was at the heart of Siam's (as Thailand used to be known) modernization, during the later 19th century, as the country faced pressures from the West. The city was the centre of Thailand's political struggles, throughout the 20th century, as the country abolished absolute monarchy, adopted constitutional rule and underwent numerous coups and several uprisings. The city grew rapidly during the 1960s through the 1980s and now exerts a significant impact among Thailand's politics, economy, education, media and modern society.
