WASHINGTON D.C. — The United States Navy has signalled its intention to sail a surface ship close to Chinese artificial islands in the South China Sea to demonstrate Washington doesn't view the reclaimed land as sovereign territory.
A U.S. official speaking to the Financial Times on the condition of anonymity said the Navy would sail a ship within the 12 nautical mile territorial zone claimed by China in the Spratly archipelago sometime within the next two weeks.
The Navy Times reports that officials said the move could happen "within days," following formal approval from the Obama Administration.
China claims almost the entirety of the South China Sea as its territory, a contested area extending deep into Southeast Asia. Here, China has been busy constructing artificial islands on submerged reefs and wants to enforce territorial no-go zones around this reclaimed land.
Under the United Nations Law of the Sea Convention, a navy ship can may pass within 12 nautical miles of territory without conducting military operations, this is known as "innocent passage."
The U.S. Navy plans to conduct such a maneuver near the Spratly Islands — to signal it doesn't recognise China's absolute claim on the area.
China's South China Sea claim is also contested by Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Taiwan, countries whose 200 nautical mile exclusive economic zones overlap with China's Claim. The U.S. says it wants to support free passage per international law.
U.S. Pacific Fleet commander Admiral Scott Swift told the New York Times that Washington does not recognize any of China's territorial claims in the area.

The United States angered China today... after a U.S. Navy warship sailed near disputed territory in the South China Sea.
Beijing told Washington... to think twice about ″making trouble.″
Our Connie Kim has the story.
China says it warned the American destroyer as it entered the waters near the islands ″illegally″ and without its permission... and said it will continue to monitor the waters and airspace... and take any other necessary steps.
The Spratleys are a disputed group of more than 750 reefs, islets, atolls, cays and islands claimed by four other countries, including Vietnam and the Philippines.
Although the statement from China′s foreign ministry gave no details on precisely where the U.S. ship went,... an unnamed U.S. defense official told Reuters on Tuesday, the USS Lassen sailed within 12 nautical miles, or 20 kilometers of China′s manmade islands in the South China Sea.
The Pentagon has thus far declined to comment but had previously said that the patrols are within its rights of free navigation and are routine.
Twelve nautical miles around a territory is internationally recognized as sovereign waters, but the U.S. does not recognize the manmade islands as China′s sovereign territory.
Washington says the construction of artificial islands on submerged reefs does not entitle a country to claim a territorial limit.
Even though Washington does not recognize the islands as Chinese territory, this will be the first time the U.S. has breached the 12-mile nautical limit since China began building up the islands in 2013.
China has long stood firm on its claim to the islands,... saying it would ″never allow any country″ to violate its territorial waters and airspace in the area.
U.S. experts in China caution against further escalation,... as Washington could launch another patrol near the artificial islands in the coming weeks.
Connie Kim, Arirang News.

China has warned against any violation of its territorial waters by American warships.
A Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman said the country’s military will take all necessary measures in response to any future incursions by US vessels into its territorial waters around islands in the South China Sea. The warning followed the sailing of a US guided missile destroyer within the 22-kilometer territorial limit of one of the islands newly created by China. The US refuses to recognize the man-made islets in the strategically vital region as deserving of sovereign territory status. The Chinese side took no forceful action during a US warship’s sail-by on Tuesday, but strongly protested the move. The spokesman offered no details on how Beijing might respond differently in the future.

China strongly opposes U.S. arms sale to Taiwan, foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said Thursday at a routine press conference in Beijing.
"No one can shake the firm will of the Chinese government and people to defend their national sovereignty and territorial integrity and to oppose foreign interference. China urges the U.S. to abide by the clear commitment it has made in the three joint communiques and revoke the arms sale plan so as to avoid bringing further damage to China-U.S. relations and the peaceful development of China's cross-Strait relations," said Hong.
China is to take necessary measures, including imposing sanctions against the companies involved in the arms sale, to safeguard its national interests, said the spokesman.
"The U.S. companies involved in the arms sale have severely violated China's sovereignty and security and thus will not be allowed to cooperate with the Chinese government and enterprises," said Hong.
The U.S. administration recently announced a 1.83-billion-U.S.-dollar arms sale package for Taiwan island, an integrated part of China's sovereign territory. It is the second time in four years that the Obama administration has approved a major arms sale package to Taiwan, following its announcement in 2011 of a 5.3-billion-dollar package of weapons sale to the island.

The ruling is the latest stage in a long running legal battle between the two countries, which have accused each other of territorial violations in the wetlands at the mouth of the San Juan River. teleSUR

We recently traveled to Cyprus to learn more about why the largest massacre of songbirds anywhere in the world is happening on British sovereign territory.
Dhekelia, one of two areas on the island retained by the British after Cypriot independence, became the host of industrial-scale bird trapping after Cyprus joined the European Union in 2004. Local authorities were forced to bring the country in line with European laws, but criminals seeking to profit from the illegal trade continue to supply the country's restaurants from the sovereign base area.
We met agonized locals who are dismayed that their tradition of trapping birds has been outlawed, and then—to see both sides of the story—joined up with a team of European activists who document the scale of trapping and disrupt the poachers’ traps at night.

The CSIS Pacific Partners Initiative is pleased to host a conversation with His Excellency Tommy Remengesau, president of the Republic of Palau. He will discuss Palau’s effort to protect its marine resources and sovereign maritime territory. The U.S. and Palau are formal partners under a Compact of Free Association agreement, an important alliance given Palau’s geostrategic importance. Palau has proposed to transform its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) into a national marine sanctuary. Although monitoring and enforcing the sanctuary will present challenges, it also presents opportunities to leverage partnerships with allied nations and NGOs to enhance Palau’s enforcement capabilities to protect the sanctuary from illegal fishing. President Remengesau will make keynote remarks, followed by a panel discussion.
President Tommy Remengesau is the eighth president of the Republic of Palau, and the first Palauan to be elected president three times. He was first elected president in 2000 and was re-elected in 2004. Constitutionally limited to two consecutive presidential terms, Remengesau served from 2008 to 2012 as senator in the Palau National Congress before being re-elected president again in 2012.

CERN Scientist Disappears
1) I am breaking international laws regarding privacy and secrecy by publishing this information.
2) I am not going to disclose my location since I know that any attempt to prove what I’ve seen or what I’ve been part of will result in my immediate and thorough extermination.
My name is Dr. Edward Mantill and I was (technically still am) a physicist at CERN, located in Geneva, Switzerland. I specialize in particle and subatomic research, focusing on quark interactions. In other words, I study very very small particles and how they interact with one another at very high speeds.
Until Thursday, Jan. 15, 2014 I was a normal scientist living and working on the CERN campus. Most of the scientists who are involved in the branch of research that I am live on campus at the facility in Geneva and venture out only for social activities and the occasional visit home.
Most of you who have heard of CERN will have heard of the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) the largest scientific instrument which exceeds 20 miles in diameter and travels under the sovereign territory of two countries (Switzerland, France). The public has been told that it was constructed at a cost of tens of billions of Euros for the purpose of studying the birth of the universe and the collisions that take place within the collider allow us a quick glimpse at certain phenomenon that can only be witnessed when particles hit one another at incredibly high rates.
This is NOT what the machine was designed for, nor is it what the machine has been used for since it’s inception.
CERN’s main purpose for building the Collider was too, well it was to open a door way.
Allow me to explain: the doorway idea came into fruition in the 1960s. After years and years of attempting to hide UFO phenomenon, including large scale and very public interactions such as the Roswell incident, and the Battle for Los Angeles incident well before that, the governments of the United States, Great Britain, and France decided to throw their weight behind the understanding of what precisely these objects were.
The ideas flew far and wide. Were UFOs from another planet? Were they from another time? Or where they simply mass hysteria and mass delusion fueled by the overactive imagination of a public who were shit scared of communists and their technology? No, they were none of those.
Our universe is but one page in a large book. Think of a closed book sitting on a table: you see each page stacked on top of one another, bound by the spine and sandwiched between the two covers. Our universe is but one page in a vast and all-encompassing book.
And our page is certainly not the only one with rich, in depth thought and writing committed to it. Every page in the book represents a different dimension each with it’s own unique writing, own unique story, own unique way of isolating itself from the other pages. No page was to interact with the other, just as no ink bleeds from one page to another in a standard book. Each page, a universe unto itself.

The Arctic, which is believed to contain as much as one-quarter of the world's undiscovered oil is part of a massive territorial dispute.
The United States, Russia, Canada, Denmark, Norway and Iceland are all laying claim to the area, with each country eager to tap into the oil, 30 percent of the earth's natural gas and resources such as diamonds, gold and iron.
In August, Russia submitted a bid to the UN claiming a territory thought to hold $30 trillion worth of oil and gas.
Meanwhile, Canada has been scrambling to defend its territory against the US arguing that it is sovereign Canadian water, not an international waterway.
Amid the Arctic land grab, Iceland has also seized the opportunity for exploration.
Vanishing at 13 percent a decade, the melting ice is expected to make drilling, mining and shipping easier.
Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson, Iceland's Foreign Minister joins Counting the Cost to discuss Iceland's plans for the Arctic and protecting the region from climate change.
ISIL's toll on Turkey's economy
Turkey's economy is on a worrisome course with it's local stock market and currency continuing to decline.
Hit by political uncertainty, unable to form a coalition government and becoming ever more involved in the chaos in neighbouring Syria, Turkey's economy has been dealt a series of blows.
Just a few years ago, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his AK party were almost unstoppable, both politically and economically.

Opal Mining Takes Off in Ethiopia
The Ethiopian highlands are often called "the roof of Africa".
A rugged, breathtakingly beautiful landscape, the discovery of opals in recent years has got precious gem experts around the world excited.
The industry currently generates around $25m a year and has led to Ethiopia being ranked among the five fastest growing economies in the world.

The United States is poised to confront China directly with its land reclamation program. The RAND Corporation's Mark Cozad joins me this week to discuss. The sad tale of Korea’s grandmothers turning to prostitution to make ends meet. Plus more regional news, next.
United States poised to confront China's island building
This week the Financial Times reported US warships would sail sometime in the next two weeks within the 12-nautical mile radius China claims as its sovereign territory in the South China Sea. Beijing particularly didn’t like that and Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said, “We will never allow any country to violate China's territorial waters and airspace in the Spratly Islands, in the name of protecting freedom of navigation and overflight.”
To get an idea of what we may see and the long term implications, I spoke with Mark Cozad, Senior Defense Policy Analyst with the RAND Corporation.
The sad tale of South Korea's grandma prostitutes
Today, prostitution is illegal in South Korea — at least that’s what the law says on the books, but in reality, it’s a flourishing industry despite red light districts disappearing. Cities are filled with massage parlors, room salons, and love motels where the world’s oldest profession prospers.
Another aspect of South Korean society that isn’t oft spoken of is the number of elderly living in abject poverty - neglected by their families and society. As the old saying goes, desperate times calls for desperate measures, and many elderly grandmothers turn to prostitution not only make ends meet, but to have some sort of human connection.
I love my parents, but don't tax me on them
In 2013, China passed a law aimed at encouraging filial piety (the giving of respect, caring for, and honoring one's parents), mandating that those who live apart from their elderly parents visit them frequently. Now the Guangzhou Daily newspaper reports a beauty salon chain wants to promote good moral values among its employees, so it's forced them to give part of their salary to their parents.
Rapists getting their just desserts
This week a pair of stories surfaced, detailing how rapists, are finally getting their just desserts. First in India, police said they have arrested the primary suspect in a sexual assault on a four-year-old girl. The baby was raped and then slashed with a blade before being abandoned by railway tracks. Then, Australian police officers get lucky and find film footage implicating five men in the range rape of a young teen.
China arrests Hackers at United States’ request
It was no big surprise that when Chinese President Xi Jinping went to DC, cyber security was on the menu. As reported, the deal reached didn’t garner a lot of trust, since what was repeated at press conferences was the same old rhetoric about how nations shouldn’t pilfer another country’s technology for personal gain and if there were accusations, the offending country would look into it and report back.
This past week, US intelligence and law enforcement agencies drew up a list of hackers the United States wanted arrested as a show of good faith… And you know what? China did.
UPDATE: India’s beef murder rip society apart, Prime Minister calls for unity
On October 1st’s Asia Brief, it was mentioned how a 50-year-old man in India was beaten to death and his 22-year-old son was severely injured after it was rumored the family had been eating beef. Authorities looking into the crime verified the victim had been storing mutton as the daughter who witnessed the beating said and not beef as was rumored. Charges of rioting and murder have been levied against at least 10 people, out of whom six have already been arrested.
