Research from The National Institute for Healthcare Research (in Rockville, MD) as well as the World Health Organization cites that men are far more likely to commit suicide after divorce than women.
Although statistically, woman tend to deal with a lot more mental health issues, men are at greater risk of suicide.
Why is this?
I don't know the answer, but I have some ideas.
From a perspective of a divorced guy, a man is willing to sacrifice everything from social, financial, to everything that they can give for the spouse and family.
But through the process of divorce, all of that gets taken away, and that human connection with their significant other disappears.
The result is that the man feels a lot of depression, and thus wants to end their life?
This piece isn't about presenting research on suicide and divorce among men.
If you're feeling lonely, and depressed, I get it. It's hard to go through major life changes, especially something like divorce all by yourself.
All I'm saying is, don't go through it by yourself.
Connect with those around you: friends and family. If you've been disconnected from them for a long time, then make the extra effort to reconnect.
Loneliness can be fatal.
It's interesting. Although we live in a time of unprecedented connection at our fingertips. We are so lonely.
If you put a bunch of younger folks in a room, they're will be a major portion of interaction via their mobile devices.
I don't believe this is a good or bad thing. It's just an evolution of society and culture as a result of development of technology.
America is the world's largest suburban nation and society in the world. Due to nationally implemented zoning laws, society is segregated.
We don't know our own neighbors.
The folks we meet at the coffee shops and other public places aren't our neighbors.
Kids growing up in suburban communities get their social connection through school or college. But, when one grows up and finds themselves in a new city, they end up being lonely.
Typically in the young professional stage of life, an individual is trying to build a family and maybe get settled.
But, in the process there are events like divorce which result in the individual being all alone, and end up struggling with things like depression which can seep into different areas of life.
How do you address that challenge?
I don't know. However, what's helped me a lot is connecting with people, especially family. This is very important in the early stages of a separation.
Seek out your family members and spend time with them.
Even after the separation and divorce, make sure you have good people around you. People who enhance your sense of self.
And, having clarity on who you are and the value you provide to society. Make sure you focus on that.
These are my thoughts.
I'd love to hear from my fellow divorced gentlemen.
After the separation and divorce, what have you found to be your biggest challenge emotionally and even socially?
Here's a couple links I found interesting on the subject of suicide and divorce:

About Costa Rica
===================
Costa Rica is a small country that encompasses just 0.03% of the world’s land mass. With over 500,000 plant and animal species, Costa Rica is one of the planets most biologically dense countries. According to Costa Rica’s National Biodiversity Institute (INBio), the biodiversity in Costa Rica represents close to 4% of the total species on Earth.
Costa Rica Travel Tips
=================
There are a few things that are important to know about Costa Rica before visiting. The following Costa Rica travel tips will help you better understand the country.
It rains year round in Costa Rica, and visitors should be sure to bring a light rain jacket or poncho. December through April are generally considered the dry season, and the rainy (or green) season starts in May. The busiest travel times in Costa Rica are during Christmas and New Years, as well as the week leading up to Easter Sunday, which is known as Semana Santa. For these weeks, hotels are often fully booked well in advance.
Unlike other Central American countries, clean tap water can generally be found throughout the country and in most tourist destinations. Additionally, most visitors find that they are free to enjoy the local food without serious repercussions on their stomachs.
Costa Rica’s unit of currency is the colon, which hovers between 500 - 550 colones/ $1 USD. U.S. dollars are widely accepted, provided the bill is not too large ($50 and $100 bills are rarely accepted) and in good condition. Hotels and tours generally list their prices in dollars. Compared to the rest of the Central America, prices in Costa Rica are relatively high, due in large part to the country’s high standard of living. Typical Costa Rican food and produce is quite inexpensive, while imported products are priced similarly to U.S. prices. A typical Costa Rican breakfast and lunch will cost around 1500 - 2000 colones ($3-4).
Road conditions throughout the country are quite variable. With the tropical climate and mountainous terrain, many roads are difficult to maintain, and many have never been paved. Relatively short distances can take many hours due to poor road conditions or traffic, and some roads are simply inaccessible during the rainy season when rivers swell. It is always a good idea to check with the locals about current road conditions before planning a day trip or taking off in your rental car. These tips can make or break your day.
Geography
=============
Costa Rica is in Central America. It is bordered by both the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea, with Panama to the south and Nicaragua to the north. The country's total area is 51,100 sq km (19,730 sq mi), slightly smaller than the U.S. state of West Virginia. Costa Rica's terrain varies between coastal plains and rugged mountains. Three mountain ranges run through the country and there are over 100 volcanic cones, several of which are major volcanoes. The highest point is Cerro Chirripo, which rises to 3,810 meters (12,500 ft) in the Chirripo National Park.
Weather and Climate
===================
The Continental Divide runs through the country's interior and weather patterns from both the Pacific and Caribbean sweep across the divide’s verdant slopes. Costa Rica’s northernmost regions tend to be more flat and arid and have dry tropical forest, while increased humidity and precipitation creates lush jungles in the south. The country’s rainiest months, termed the “green season,” start in May and run until early December. The dry season typically lasts from December through April. Weather along the Pacific coast tends to follow these patterns. The Caribbean coast, however, is much less predictable and can receive rain throughout the year.
Much of Costa Rica’s biological diversity can be attributed to its location between two continents, as well as its numerous microclimates, which vary by elevation amid the country’s mountainous and volcanic landscapes.
Having a well-grounded and realistic understanding about Costa Rica's weather patterns will help travelers plan their trip and avoid unpleasant surprises.
Development and Society
===================
Costa Rican society is rooted in family, education, health. Ticos and Ticas (male and female Costa Ricans, respectively) have a sustained commitment to healthy personal relationships and stewardship of the natural environment. This emphasis on creating symbiotic relationships with the environment and tourism, particularly in the last 40 years has set a profound example, and it has allowed a fascinating model of development to take root.

Along with housing our nation's governing body, Washington, D.C. can also call itself home to some of the fittest Americans.
After looking at the 50 largest metropolitan cities, the American College of Sports Medicine released its annual ACSM American Fitness Index Tuesday, with Washington D.C. ranked as the fittest in the U.S.
To come up with its findings, ACSM not only looks at the health habits of people living in those cities, but what the community is providing to its patrons to stay fit.
The report states there's 6.4 parks and 5.7 swimming pools per every 100,000 people. There's also 2.2 recreational centers available for every 20,000 people. The population of Washington D.C. is 6 million.
A board chair for the report told NBC, "If you walk out onto the (National Mall) at noon, tourists can't get around because there are so many people exercising ... And on the weekend they are playing kickball on the Mall."
Still, the nation's capitol isn't perfect and didn't meet the index's target goals when it came to several personal health indicators.
Only 73 percent of people said they'd exercised in the last 30 days. The target goal was 82.6 percent. And only 32 percent of those living in D.C. said they ate two servings of fruit each day. The target goal was 35.6 percent.
Minneapolis, Minnesota scored as the second fittest city, with 73.5 percent of its population saying it'd exercised in the last 30 days.
Interestingly, more people said they exercised in San Diego — 76.3 percent — but its higher death rate for cardiovascular disease and fewer recreational facilities contributed to it placing third, falling behind snowy Minneapolis. (Video via Expedia)
The report also looked at if the cities were exercising the way the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises the U.S. population to.
The CDC says adults ages 18 to 64, should perform a moderate-intensity exercise, like walking briskly, for two and a half hours each week.
Out of a target goal of just 32 percent, only 24.3 percent of Washington, D.C.'s population met those guidelines, as well as 27.5 percent of Minneapolis'. San Diego tipped the scales at 33 percent.
"They set a low bar here and we're still not beating it," the executive director of Trust for America's Health told USA Today.
According to the National Institutes of Health, around two-thirds of Americans are either overweight or obese.
On the other end of the spectrum, Memphis, Tennessee, and Indianapolis, Indiana were the two least fit cities out of the 50 looked at.

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases head Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN’s Candy Crowley that the quarantines for health care workers returning from west Africa, newly announced by several states following one confirmed case of ebola in New York City and one suspected in New Jersey, were counterproductive and would have unintended consequences.
“We have to be careful when we make policy we don’t have unintended consequences, where you group everyone in the same category, that just because you came back from there, that therefore you’re in this category,” Fauci said. “We do have stratification of risk and stratification of monitoring. That’s critical, based on scientific data.”

Riding through the city of Bengaluru, Karnataka.
Bangalore, officially known as Bengaluru is the capital city of the Indian state of Karnataka. Located on the Deccan Plateau in the south-eastern part of Karnataka, Bangalore is India's third most populous city and fifth-most populous urban agglomeration. Bangalore is known as the "Silicon Valley of India" because of its role as the nation's leading information technology (IT) exporter. Located at a height of over 3,000 feet (914.4 m) above sea level, Bangalore is known for its pleasant climate throughout the year. The city is amongst the top ten preferred entrepreneurial locations in the world.
A succession of South Indian dynasties, the Western Gangas, the Cholas, and the Hoysalas ruled the present region of Bangalore until in 1537 CE, Kempé Gowdā — a feudatory ruler under the Vijayanagara Empire — established a mud fort considered to be the foundation of modern Bangalore. Following transitory occupation by the Marāthās and Mughals, the city remained under the Mysore Kingdom. It later passed into the hands of Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan, and was captured by the British after victory in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War (1799), who returned administrative control of the city to the Maharaja of Mysore. The old city developed in the dominions of the Maharaja of Mysore, and was made capital of the Princely State of Mysore, which existed as a nominally sovereign entity of the British Raj. In 1809, the British shifted their cantonment to Bangalore, outside the old city, and a town grew up around it, which was governed as part of British India. Following India's independence in 1947, Bangalore became the capital of Mysore State, and remained capital when the new Indian state of Karnataka was formed in 1956. The two urban settlements of Bangalore -- city and cantonment -- which had developed as independent entities merged into a single urban centre in 1949. The exiting Kannada name Bengalūru was declared as official name of the city in 2006.
Bangalore is home to many well-recognised educational and research institutions in India, such as Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institute of Management (Bangalore) (IIMB), and National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS). Numerous public sector heavy industries, technology companies, aerospace, telecommunications, and defence organisations, such as Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Infosys, and Wipro are headquartered in the city. A demographically diverse city, Bangalore is a major economic and cultural hub and the second-fastest growing major metropolis in India. The city also houses the Kannada film industry. As a growing metropolitan city in a developing country, Bangalore confronts substantial pollution and other logistical and socio-economic problems. With a Gross domestic product (GDP) of US$83 billion, Bangalore is listed fourth among the top 15 cities contributing to India's overall GDP.

The federal government spent nearly a half a million of your tax dollars to study dating apps for gay men.
It did not start out as love at first sight, but first type for Chris Mims. He met his partner visiting Nashville for New Year's Eve two years ago.
Chris Mims says, "I thought it would be nice to meet someone up here in Nashville. I was on Grindr and just happened to message someone."
He ran into that special someone unknowingly at a local club.
Mims says, "Instant stigma, and after that we started talking."
Not everyone ends up with the happy ending like Mims, using an app to meet people.
Mims says, "Apps like Grindr, Tinder, blenderwhatever you're on they are nice and convenient but also used for quick hookups if that's what you're looking for. It could be the spread of an STD though."
That's why Columbia University School of Public Health interviewed 60 gay men who use mobile apps to meet sexual partners.
Eric Schrimshaw says, "An overwhelming number of men who have sex with men are using these apps to locate partners, and so for us to keep up to date with HIV prevention we need to understand what is taking place."
Assistant professor of Sociomedical Sciences, Eric Schrimshaw, is helping run the $430,000 project funded through the National Institutes of Health federal tax dollars.
While some call it a waste on FOX 17's Facebook page, others say it's an investment.
Chris sanders says, "The fear that's out there, the stigma and lack of information out there I know. Anytime we invest in public health and populations that have been neglected out there, it's a win for the whole society."
Schrimshaw says, "If we can prevent people from getting HIV, STDS we can actually save money in the long run."
Some say it is also about saving real connections in a technologically based world.
"I think the more we move towards these apps, we've got to come back to human nature. I can meet you that way, but from there the app is closed."
Columbia University finished the interview process in December. Schrimshaw says data will be analyzed throughout the next few months. Updating an HIV prevention programs will follow.
