XFA
In the first ever bilateral U-S-Croatian amphibious military exercises, U-S and Croat naval forces have simulated a landing operation on an island in the Adriatic Sea in an exercise meant to train the military of the former Yugoslav republic.
Croatia is a new member of NATO's Partnership for Peace programme, which allows the nation to participate in many of NATO activities without being a member of the alliance.
The exercise on Tuesday, dubbed "Phiblex 2000," also testifies to vastly improved relations between Croatia and the United States following the election of a new, pro-Western government there earlier this year.
But the timing of the exercise - two days after elections in neighbouring Yugoslavia - led to speculation that it serves to discourage Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic from exerting force to ensure he stays in power.
The U-S-S Austin was just 240 kilometres (150 miles) northwest of Yugoslavia's pro-Western republic of Montenegro for during the U-S-Croat military exercise on Tuesday.
The ship's commanding officer denied claims that the exercise was meant to discourage Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic from exerting force to ensure he stays in power, saying it was planned months ago and "has no relation" to the Yugoslav elections.
But he said he was aware of the vote.
Yugoslavia's government has now said opposition presidential candidate Vojislav Kostunica finished first in the weekend presidential elections.
State television said he'll now compete again with Milosevic in a runoff.
Prior to the elections, American officials expressed concerns for the safety of Montenegro's pro-Western leader Milo Djukanovic, who may be targeted by his adversary, Milosevic.
One U-S Marine said both forces would profit from Tuesday's bilateral military exercise.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"It's a great opportunity for all of us, both Americans and Croatians, to work together on such an exercise, this amphibious assault on the island. Anytime you can get two forces working together everyone profits from it."
SUPER CAPTION: US Marine
About 400 sailors and 200 Marines from the amphibious assault ship U-S-S Austin and 400 Croatian soldiers jumped into Zodiac rubber boats and simulated a landing operation on the Croatian island of Zirje in the Adriatic Sea.
As they approached the largely deserted island, Marines used small flares to disguise the landing spots, while some Croatian soldiers took off from U-S-S Austin in Croatian MI-8 helicopters and landed on Zirje.
Croatian Deputy Defence Minister Zlatko Gareljic watched the exercise from the U-S-S Austin.
The Major General of the Croatian 4th Brigade described the main objective of the exercise.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"The main objective for us is to check our interoperability and compatibility with United States armed forces, but also with any other forces from NATO countries."
SUPER CAPTION: Damir Kristicevic, Major General of the Croatian 4th Brigade and Deputy Chief of the Joint Staff
It was the largest and most demanding joint Croat-U-S exercise to date.
When asked if his forces would take action if Milosevic exerted force following the Yugoslav elections, the commander of the U-S Marines said his troops were ready to carry out missions as directed.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"(Q Will your forces take action if things turn nasty in Belgrade after the elections?) The Marines expeditionary unit and the amphibious ready group come to the Mediterranean for six-month
deployments. We are ready to do missions whenever we are directed to. That's what we do for a living."
SUPER CAPTION: Lt Col Paul Brygider, Commander of Marines troops
The country is now seeking full NATO membership.

Serbo-Croat/Nat
Croatian forces have been moved towards the Serb held area of Eastern Slavonia for a second night running.
In the face of the increased troop movements, the inhabitants of the frontline town of Osijek have been preparing for a renewal of fighting.
For the second night running a large number of Croatian troops and weapons left their army barracks in Zagreb heading eastwards.
Heavy artillery, multiple rocket launchers, armoured vehicles, tanks and engineering units were on the move.
The Croatian Army refuses to make any comment on the movements.
Rebel Serbs, with help from the Serb dominated Yugoslav army, occupied one third of Croatian territory after Croatia declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.
Earlier this year, the Croatian army recaptured most of its territories lost in 1991, leaving Eastern Slavonia the last bit held by rebel Serbs.
They deny Croatian sovereignty and refuse to live in a Croatian state.
Eastern Slavonia is the most eastern part of Republic of Croatia and is only separated from Serbia proper by the River Danube.
Because of the increase in tensions in the area, Eastern Slavonia is high on the agenda at the Dayton peace talks.
The latest troop movements make the possibility of a peaceful reintegration of Eastern Slavonia in Republic of Croatia increasingly difficult.
War fever is present on both sides.
Earlier this week, local Serbs took over deserted U-N observation checkpoints in the separation zone.
Elsewhere Croatian troops are stationing themselves in bunkers and army bulldozers were digging out artillery positions near Osijek.
People in the city of Osijek and the entire region bordering Eastern Slavonia are preparing for a fresh onslaught of fighting.
Fresh shelters made of sand bags have been erected around the city.
The County Prefect of Eastern Slavonia, a Croatian hard-liner, said Osijek was ready for war.
SOUNDBITE:
"We are ready for the military option. It is up to the Serbs to accept the proposed agreement or to refuse it. In case they will refuse it, and it looks like they are not going to accept it, Croatia will have legal right and green light of international community to liberate its occupied territories with its own means and reintegrate those regions with its own power."

Croatian President Franjo Tudjman, who has returned from the peace talks in Dayton, has said he will liberate the area by November the 30th if the current negotiations end in failure.

Croatian President Franjo Tudjman's ruling Croatian Democratic
Union (HDZ) is the strong favourite to win Sunday's (29/10)
elections for the lower house of Parliament. The opposition parties have been handicapped by the mainly state-run media and face an uphill
struggle to oust a government which has led the country from
communist Yugoslavia to national independence. Tudjman himself is
not up for re-election. But as a charismatic figurehead, his role
of boosting the HDZ campaign has been vital. The HDZ won the first
multi-party elections in 1990 and the first post-independence
elections two years later. It is seen as both nationalist and
right-wing. Tudjman and his party currently enjoy considerable
national popularity because of the Croatian military's recapture
of the Krajina region from rebel Serbs during the summer.
Tudjman's talk of further military action to retake Eastern
Slavonia, the last remaining piece of Croatia still in Serb hands,
if current negotiations for a peaceful hand-back fail have also
helped keep the HDZ at the top of the polls. At an election rally
in the southwestern port city of Rijeka on Wednesday (25/10),
Tudjman was cheered by huge crowds. Shouts of "Croatia, Croatia"
greeted his pledge to win back Eastern Slavonia by force if
necessary. With 90 percent of Croatia's media controlled by the
HDZ, the country's second largest party, the Croatian Social
Liberal Party (HSLS) has been struggling to win support. It was
banned from making television advertisments earlier this month and
an electoral commission running the polls appears relatively
toothless. The minority Serbian People's Party has also attacked
the Government for engineering the election. Spokesman Veselin
Pejnovic said Serbs would be forced to use a different colour
voting slip which would instantly identify them.

Serbo-Croat/Nat
Croatian authorities began releasing Saturday some of the one-thousand Serb men rounded up in Pakrac for questioning over alleged war crimes. .
Food and clothes were also distributed to the Serb population in towns and villages recaptured last week by Croatian troops in a surprise two-day military offensive.
Croatia was hard at work today to improve its image after having detained one thousand Serb men rounded up from the town of Pakrac, about 55 miles southeast of the Croatian capital Zagreb.
The local Croatian Red Cross was present in nearby villages, distributing food and essentials to Serbs in the recaptured areas.
The Croatian military police were working on promoting their image too, handing out sweets to children in the street.
Now the detainees were being released and, following international concern, the Croatian authorities allowed filming to prove they had been well treated.
Two days before they were rounded up and bused off to three towns to be screened as possible war criminals.
Here in the village of Brusnik, a group of the returned detainees were addressed by the local police commander, telling them they were now citizens of Croatia and entitled to all the rights of a Croatian.
Families anxiously awaited their fathers and sons - the roundup had taken men aged between 16 and 60.
They came back to these emotional welcomes from their families.
Some planned to stay in the villages, but others were considering leaving after their two day detention.
SOUNDBITE: (Croatian)
"No, I don't have family here, just a grandmother, but I will stay for sure."
SUPER CAPTION: Branko Kojadinovic, released detainee
Croatian authorities appeared keen to reassure Serbs and the international community that they would not abuse human rights.
Moreover, Croatian officials are even giving these men money as a reimbursement for the inconvenience of being detained.
The Croat government says it wants the Serbs to stay in the territories it has retaken - the detainees are each receiving 200 Kunas - about 40 U-S dollars.
Juri Radic, the Croat Minister for Social Security, said they were doing everything possible to return people back to their normal lives.
SOUNDBITE: (In Croat)
"This action here today is in accordance with the Croatian government's decision that as soon as this territory is liberated the civil authority has to function."
SUPER CAPTION: Josip Skara, Minister for Social Security
Still, in Pakrac, Croatian soldiers showed off captured Serb weapons.
Serb fighters in Pakrac surrendered on Thursday after a short but intense skirmish with Croatian troops.
After a 1991 civil war, during which Serb soldiers took over about a third of Croatia, half the town of Pakrac became Serb-controlled.
The town remained divided by the warring parties until this week, when a surprise Croatian attack cut off thousands of Serbs on their side of Pakrac.

Natural Sound
The UN Security Council is set to back an eight- month extension of its peacekeeping mandate in Croatia - despite grave misgivings that neither the Serbs or Croats will support its implementation.
The new deal falls short of Croatian demands for land, frozen under UN control since the war of 1991, to be handed back to the Zagreb Government.
The mandate also involves a UN presence on Croatia's old international border. That is along territory currently in the hands of the Serbs - and they are already on the record as rejecting any stationing of UN personnel on that border.
This is the Croatian town of Turanj...... an eerie no-man's land which still bears the scars of a war in which neighbour fought neighbour.
In all, a third of Croatian territory was lost to the Serbs in the war of 1991.
Under the ceasefire agreement, Turanj became part of a two-kilometre wide strip of land placed under United Nations control. At one end of the main street is the Croat front line at the other end the Serbian one.
The United Nations is the human buffer zone between the two sides.
Under the terms of its new mandate it should move about twenty kilometres south of here to take up position along Croatia's old international border.
But that could be easier said than done. The Serbs are unlikely to agree to a UN presence on the old international border and the Croats feel the mandate does not go far enough in answering their demands for land like this to be given back to them.
The worry now for the international community is that the new mandate is impotent - privately the UN are already admitting it is unlikely to work.
But they know that if there's no continued UN presence here the
likelihood of war increases dramatically.
The Croatian military is now a well -trained, modern fighting machine.
Its land forces have the muscle to restore lost territory by force.
Publicly the Government in Zagreb is still talking peace but its running out of patience. The fear is that military exercises like this one could soon turn into more than just a war game.

Croatia - Military parade to celebrate Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and the Day of Croatian Defenders, which marks the 20th anniversary of Operation Storm, Zagreb, 4Aug2015.
Croatia started celebrating its "liberation" with a military parade, with some 3,000 soldiers and war veterans, 300 vehicles and 30 aircraft in the capital Zagreb, gathering thousands of spectators.
Another ceremony, attended by top officials, will be held on Wednesday in the town of Knin, a wartime rebel Serb stronghold that Croatian troops recaptured on August 5, 1995.
"Operation Storm was a turning point (in the conflict), a brilliant military operation, justified and legitimate," Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic said in a speech at a defence ministry ceremony, encouraging citizens to be "proud and dignified" during the festivities.
The Croatian army launched Operation Storm on August 4, 1995, and in an 84-hour offensive it saw 130,000 troops recapture a region that had been in Serb hands since 1991.

Rebel Serb forces in Pakrac, a town in Croatia, have surrendered today (Thursday) after a day of fierce fighting.
It was believed to be the biggest Serb surrender since Serbs and Croats launched a bitter 1991 war that killed more than 10,000 people and left the Serbs in control of one-third of Croatia.
A UN tank rolled into Pakrac Thursday - to witness the last moments of the fight for the town. Serb soldiers in the town had just surrendered to the Croat army.
Croatian soldiers searched the town inch by inch to flush out the last rebels.
Even people's backyards were inspected as Croat soldiers did a house-to-house search, checking indoors as well as out.
The surrendering Serbs, which included top military and civilian officials, were rounded up with their hands above their heads. Women and children were also marched out onto the streets.
The Serb officer who announced the Serbs were giving themselves up said a further 5,000 Serbs were ready to surrender - making this apparently the biggest Serb surrender since Serbs and Croats declared war in 1991.
One Serb was arrested on the spot, although it was not immediately clear why.
Pakrac has been the centre of intense fighting today as rebel Serbs fought to keep control of the town, only 90 kilometres from the Croatian capital, Zagreb.
Croatia's army appears to have completed most of an operation to recapture one of three pockets of its territories held by the Serbs.
But there were still Serbs in the woods around Pakrac and Croatian soldiers admitted that today's surrender was not the end.

Split is the second largest city in Croatia lying on the Adriatic coastline. This is one of the oldest Cities dating back 1700 years to an ancient time where Greeks and Romans ruled.
It's a place of historical monuments and resorts to explore. The old city is an ancient maze of limestone streets with cafes throughout, while the beaches provide some of the cleanest water to swim in.
A transportation hub that brings travellers to sail to the many adjacent islands such as Hvar, another island I explored.
There are adventurous hiking trails that wrap around the peninsula. Courtyards with concerts and events, with an exciting Riva waterfront promenade to stroll and enjoy the cafes and scenery.
Split is one of the most cleanest and beautiful cities I have ever visited.

Zagreb is its political and cultural focal point, an amiable capital city situated at the intersection of Central, Eastern and Southern Europe. The Kaptol district has been its Catholic heart since the Middle Ages. An atmospheric place, Upper Town is a gem Zagreb’s historic past. North of Zagreb on the western border with Slovenia, the picture-perfect Veliki Tabor Castle rises on a hill, its Renaissance courtyard with columns and arcades possessing a touch of southern elegance. Kumrovec, birthplace of the former President of Yugoslavia, Josip Broz Tito, is located south of the castle and is now a museum village. The historic centre of Rovinj is located on a shell-shaped peninsula, further south on the Adriatic coast. Seen from the sea it is one of the most stunning of the Adriatic’s harbour cities. Situated close to the southern tip of the Istrian Peninsula is Pula, the oldest city on Croatia‘s eastern Adriatic coast. The largest square of the Old Town, and today‘s main square, was originally located on the site of a Roman forum. The historical centre of Split is a cultural work of art, its palace, sea aspect and bay a harmonious blend of both ancient and mediaeval times. Dubrovnik‘s historic centre possesses many treasures such as the Onofri Fountain, the Saint Spas Chapel and the Franciscan Church. Due to its magnificent location, unique Old Town and beautiful buildings, Dubrovnik has become tantamount to an amazing work of art. Croatia is a country of timeless Mediterranean beauty, a place in the sun where history reflects in the Adriatic and Occident meets Orient - a Balkan paradise!

Travel video about destination Krka in Croatia.
The Krka River, and numerous lakes that contain natural dams, forms a border between North and Central Dalmatia, and travels seventy five kilometres through the Croatian hills. The best way to experience the river is by boat upstream from Lake Visovac to Roški Slap. Above Roški Slap, and before the water plunges down to Lake Visovac, the calm and reflective waters of the national park make this landscape even more beautiful. The grey rock, with its layers of reddish marl, is reminiscent of Utah and Arizona which is why the German Winnetou films were shot in this area. Twelve kilometres from Šibenik and depending on the season, various large quantities of water crash down to the Prokljansko Jezero. The water makes its way through small forests and rock sediment that have formed one limestone sinter terrace after another. The masses of water gradually advance to the most spectacular travertin waterfall in Europe, Skradinski Buk. In the Krka, nature has created a wonder, an intriguing spectacle of both water and landscape.

Travel video about destination Pltvicka Jezera in Croatia.
In the past four thousand years a spectacular natural wonder has been created along the extent of the Plitvice River in the border region of Croatia and Bosnia Herzegovina: deep blue and turquoise-green lakes, the Cascading Waters Of Plitvice. For seven kilometres, sixteen lakes have formed in a gorge, like the links of a chain, connected by various cascades and waterfalls. The sub-surface of the Dinaric Mountains consists mainly of water-permeable limestone. At first, rainwater disappears into the mountain and travels through its many subterranean labyrinths. In this way, over thousands of years, gorges and cave systems have gradually evolved. A boat service became necessary due to the increasing number of visitors that have come here since 1979 when the Plitvice Lakes were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Plitvice Lakes: a constantly changing miracle of Nature!

Travel video about destination Kornati in Croatia.
The captivating world of Kornati is located off Croatia’s north Dalmatian Coast, a hundred and forty seven islands, an Adriatic paradise! As it is only accessible by boat, we begin in Biograd to a magical world of cliffs, coves, underwater caves and small rocky islands. A large section of the archipelago, which extends for two hundred and thirty four square kilometres, was designated as a national park in 1980. Of this, sixty nine square miles are islands the remainder being a maritime reserve with amazingly rich marine fauna. Školj Mountain is the highest point on Dugi Otok Island and is well known for two natural phenomena: its mile-long and up to one hundred and sixty metre high white coastal cliffs and the Mir Jezero, a salt water lake. On the last day of Creation, God crowned His work by creating Kornati, out of tears, the cosmos and a whisper of breath. Kornati, one of the most beautiful water worlds on Earth!

Travel video about destination Trogir in Croatia.
The picturesque old town of Trogir in Croatia is situated on a small island which is connected to the mainland by a bridge and protected by walls and a fortress. In 380 B.C. Greeks from Issa settled there and founded the fortified city of Tragyrion. It was only under Croatian rule that the island fortress regained its former importance when, in 1107, it became a diocesan city and received municipal rights by King Koloman. At the south-western end of the island is the imposing Kamerlengo Fortress, former residence of the Venetian governor and his militia. High walls connect various towers from which there is a good view of the sea. Church steeples rise above the rooftops.as though to highlight the importance of religion during Venetian rule. Several coastal towns entered into agreements with Venice whose mighty fleet offered protection against pirate raids. In 1997 the entire old town was designated as a World Cultural Heritage Site, a closely packed-together collection of residential buildings, churches, narrow streets and courtyards.Repeated hostilities of the Ottomans finally ended the heyday of this fine city but its former splendour has been well preserved and Trogir now serves as a priceless glance back into the Middle Ages.

Travel video about destination Rovinj in Croatia.
The historic centre of Rovinj is located on a shell-shaped peninsula on Istria’s Mediterranean coastline in the north of Croatia. Seen from the sea it is one of the most stunning of the Adriatic’s port cities, harmonious and compact, a perfect cityscape. In the eighteenth century the city’s inhabitants built their basilica according to the plans of Venetian architect, Giovanni Dozzi, on the foundation of a previous Romanesque building. The bright interior of the imposing three-nave basilica contains splendid architecture, fine ceiling paintings and altars. Although Rovinj fell for a long time under the protection of the naval power of Venice, it was still haunted by the Genoese, pirates and pestilence, but the city managed to survive all of its tribulations and was designated as a cultural monument in 1963. The wealthy people of ancient Rome once thought of the region as a holiday paradise and so it has remained right up until the present day. The romantic Pearl Of The Croatian Riviera has lost nothing of its original charm. Rovinj encapsulates history, culture and beauty!
