Captain James Cook, FRS, RN (7 November 1728[NB 1] -- 14 February 1779) was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the Royal Navy. Cook made detailed maps of Newfoundland prior to making three voyages to the Pacific Ocean, during which he achieved the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand.
Cook joined the British merchant navy as a teenager and joined the Royal Navy in 1755. He saw action in the Seven Years' War, and subsequently surveyed and mapped much of the entrance to the Saint Lawrence River during the siege of Quebec. This helped bring Cook to the attention of the Admiralty and Royal Society. This notice came at a crucial moment in both Cook's career and the direction of British overseas exploration, and led to his commission in 1766 as commander of HM Bark Endeavour for the first of three Pacific voyages.
In three voyages Cook sailed thousands of miles across largely uncharted areas of the globe. He mapped lands from New Zealand to Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean in greater detail and on a scale not previously achieved. As he progressed on his voyages of discovery he surveyed and named features, and recorded islands and coastlines on European maps for the first time. He displayed a combination of seamanship, superior surveying and cartographic skills, physical courage and an ability to lead men in adverse conditions.
Cook was killed in Hawaii in a fight with Hawaiians during his third exploratory voyage in the Pacific in 1779. He left a legacy of scientific and geographical knowledge which was to influence his successors well into the 20th century and numerous memoria worldwide have been dedicated to him.

Il navigue ensuite sur la Baltique et monte en grade. Lors de la guerre d’Indépendance américaine, il rejoint la marine royale britannique.
Séjournant au Canada, il s’initie aux techniques de mesures employées à terre par les géomètres, puis a l’idée de les adapter à la cartographie et à la navigation. Pendant le siège de Québec, il se consacre à la cartographie de l’embouchure du fleuve Saint-Laurent, ce qui permet au général Wolfe de mener son attaque décisive dans les Plaines d’Abraham.
James Cook attire ainsi l’attention de l’Amirauté et de la Royal Society. En 1768, la couronne britannique lui confie une première grande expédition dans le Pacifique. Officiellement, Cook a pour mission d’aller observer depuis Tahiti le passage de Vénus sur le disque solaire. Une fois ses observations consignées, l’explorateur ouvre les scellés qui contiennent les instructions pour la seconde partie de son voyage : chercher les signes d’une terra australis dans l’hémisphère Sud…

Fort de ses premières découvertes, James Cook se voit confier successivement deux nouvelles missions : découvrir un continent austral et trouver le passage du Nord-Ouest.
Peu de temps après son retour, Cook est promu au grade de commandant. Il est bientôt chargé par la Royal Society d’une nouvelle mission dans les mers du Sud. Au cours de son premier voyage, Cook avait démontré que la Nouvelle-Zélande n’était rattachée à aucune terre et avait estimé la taille de l’Australie. Les membres de la Royal Society sont cependant persuadés de l’existence d’un continent plus grand, qui devrait se trouver plus au sud.
À partir de 1772, Cook sillonne les océans à sa recherche. Il va jusqu’à frôler la banquise, sans jamais apercevoir le continent antarctique… La route du retour le mène aux Tonga, à l’île de Pâques, à l’île Norfolk, en Nouvelle-Calédonie et au Vanuatu. De retour en Angleterre, son rapport conclut clairement à la non-existence de la mythique terra australis. Celui que l’on considère désormais comme “le plus grand navigateur de tous les temps” repart en 1776 investi d’une troisième mission : trouver un passage au nord pour raccourcir le trajet des importateurs de thé entre l’Asie et l’Europe.
En 1778, il découvre les îles Sandwich (Hawaii) et se livre à une étude hydrographique du littoral nord-américain. Malgré plusieurs tentatives, le détroit de Béring se révèle infranchissable en raison des glaces qui l’obstruent, même au mois d’août. Cook décide de remettre le cap sur Hawaii. Mais, après quelques semaines, des tensions se font sentir entre les indigènes et les Britanniques et plusieurs bagarres éclatent…

Plot: James Cook is a corporate attorney with a dilemma. Cook made detailed maps of Newfoundland prior to making three voyages to the Pacific Ocean, during which he achieved the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand.
Cook joined the British merchant navy as a teenager and joined the Royal Navy in 1755. He saw action in the Seven Years' War, and subsequently surveyed and mapped much of the entrance to the Saint Lawrence River during the siege of Quebec. This helped bring Cook to the attention of the Admiralty and Royal Society. This notice came at a crucial moment in both Cook's career and the direction of British overseas exploration, and led to his commission in 1766 as commander of HM Bark Endeavour for the first of three Pacific voyages.
In three voyages Cook sailed thousands of miles across largely uncharted areas of the globe. He mapped lands from New Zealand to Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean in greater detail and on a scale not previously achieved. As he progressed on his voyages of discovery he surveyed and named features, and recorded islands and coastlines on European maps for the first time. He displayed a combination of seamanship, superior surveying and cartographic skills, physical courage and an ability to lead men in adverse conditions.
Cook was killed in Hawaii in a fight with Hawaiians during his third exploratory voyage in the Pacific in 1779. He left a legacy of scientific and geographical knowledge which was to influence his successors well into the 20th century and numerous memoria worldwide have been dedicated to him.

Captain James Cook, FRS, RN (7 November 1728[NB 1] -- 14 February 1779) was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the Royal Navy. Cook made detailed maps of Newfoundland prior to making three voyages to the Pacific Ocean, during which he achieved the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand.
Cook joined the British merchant navy as a teenager and joined the Royal Navy in 1755. He saw action in the Seven Years' War, and subsequently surveyed and mapped much of the entrance to the Saint Lawrence River during the siege of Quebec. This helped bring Cook to the attention of the Admiralty and Royal Society. This notice came at a crucial moment in both Cook's career and the direction of British overseas exploration, and led to his commission in 1766 as commander of HM Bark Endeavour for the first of three Pacific voyages.
In three voyages Cook sailed thousands of miles across largely uncharted areas of the globe. He mapped lands from New Zealand to Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean in greater detail and on a scale not previously achieved. As he progressed on his voyages of discovery he surveyed and named features, and recorded islands and coastlines on European maps for the first time. He displayed a combination of seamanship, superior surveying and cartographic skills, physical courage and an ability to lead men in adverse conditions.
Cook was killed in Hawaii in a fight with Hawaiians during his third exploratory voyage in the Pacific in 1779. He left a legacy of scientific and geographical knowledge which was to influence his successors well into the 20th century and numerous memoria worldwide have been dedicated to him.

When it comes to history, recent discoveries have been proving that time and time again, history can be rewritten. As we grow and evolved as a species, one of the first things we have to acknowledge is that we don’t have all the answers. Even though inventions have greatly assisted us in research, we aren’t right 100% of the time. Regardless of whether we are correct in our research and theories about the past, it doesn’t stop the educational system from teaching the latest information at the time. But then, once a contradicting fact is released, the textbooks and history books have to be rewritten.
It is an odd thing to think about in terms of rewriting our history. It is also a good indicator to remind us that nothing is ever set in stone. For example, for decades it was thought that Stonehenge was a remote location that was dedicated to mysteries and magic. But archaeological digs on the site are now discovering that Stonehenge was closer to civilization than previously thought, thus forcing historians to reconsider what Stonehenge was actually used for.
For the longest time, it was believed that James Cook discovered the country of Australia in 1770. This is a fact that has been cemented into the history books and common knowledge for most people around the world. However, a soldier discovered a set of coins in 1944, and they were sent to a museum in 1979 with a map indicating the location where the coins were found with an X. Once historians looked closer at the coins, it was discovered that they dated back between 900-1300. This means that James Cook couldn’t have discovered Australia, not by a long shot.
One of the most popular stories in our last decade was when Pluto was demoted to a dwarf planet. People couldn’t comprehend the change and accept that Pluto was no longer a major planet in our Solar System. This was all thanks to the discovery of a dwarf planet called Eris, which was bigger than Pluto. Petitions and debates still continue as to whether to reinstate Pluto as a planet, and hopefully the mystery and question will be answered in the next few years. But until then, those textbooks from pre-1990 are pretty much useless.
Speaking of planets, it was believed for the longest time that life couldn’t exist on any other planet besides Earth. But when the Mars Rover discovered evidence of not only water, but traces of life, scientists had to go back and revisit the history books and scientific journals. If Mars has water, then it means that life can potentially be supported on the red planet. What does this mean for the future of the human race? Perhaps, should the Earth no longer be habitable, there are other options out there to ensure our survival.
There are more discoveries where this came from. If anything, these discoveries all prove that nothing is ever set in stone, and that history can change in an instant.

Australian Comedian in the Melbourne Comedy Gala Festival 2006, discussing accents.
Some of those who are interested in the script or find it hard to understand, out of the kindness of my heart (well mainly out of procrastination and lack of motivation with my life), I've got the transcript typed up below. Freely point out if some of the words are wrong.
I am aware that as Australians we do have the most annoying accent on the planet.
I am sure you are aware of, for we all do.
If you're aware we all go up at the end of every sentence, cause we're all too insecure to actually make a statement.
So we have to make it sound like it's a question. Cause we secretly need your approval. Even when it's something serious.
"Suzzy got eaten by a shark."
I'm afraid there going to be high court judgers in 30 years time handing out verdicts going "I found you guilty of murder."
And you know what we do here in Australia? I didn't realize 'till we went overseas. We ask questions that don't need answering.
"How nice was the weather today?"
I didn't know we did that until I got to England. I was with a group of English people
"Oh, how heavy is that rain?"
They just looked at me..
"Really heavy?"
I think Jesus might've been an Australian. I think Jesus might've been a Aussie and we've just been reading his scriptures with the wrong inflection. Maybe Jesus walked out in the Sermon of the Mount and just went "Ohh, how blessed are the meek?"
And of course the irony of it all is that we're always so arbituary about the languages we speak in Australia. We were almost colonised by the French. In fact we were almost colonized by the Dutch.
The Dutch arrived in the 1600s but they arrived in the part of Western Australia when desert basically meets ocean. The Dutch basically walked off their ships and walked around going "Well this is ridiculous...we cannot grow marihuana crops here." They sailed off.
The French arrived 150 or so years later, but they arrived in Botany Bay, next to city harbour but kinda like swampy, marshland. The French looked around going "Well I agree with the Dutch, this place is shit. [mimics French]" They sailed off.
Captain Cook arrived in Botany Bay but in a rare display of British optimism. He looked around and went "Well it is a bit shit, but I think if we go around the corner if might be nicer." Although to be fair, I have done my research, Captain Cook would not have sounded like that. Cause Captain Cook actually came from Yorkshire, which means the first words heard by English people upon sailing to Australia would've been "This place is focking shite!"
