In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Iceland.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. Did you know that, according to the 2012 Global Peace Index, Iceland is officially the most peaceful country in the world? The index looks at things like violent crime, political instability and the percentage of people in prison. Locals are so comfortable with how safe their country is that they’re more than happy to leave their babies outside shops and restaurants while they’re inside.
2. There are no surnames or family names in Iceland. There are exceptions to this. There are a few family names in Iceland, mostly Danish. For the majority of Icelanders people have a last name that is comprised from their father's (or mother's) first name with the addition of -dóttir (-daughter) or –son. This means that a member of a family will have a different last name to both of their parents and their siblings of a different gender.
3. An 18th-century volcanic eruption almost forced the abandonment of the country. For eight months in 1783 and 1784, the catastrophic Laki eruption spewed forth 30 billion tons of lava and hundreds of millions of tons of ash and sulfuric acid. The toxic fog poisoned Iceland’s plants and vegetation and decimated its crops. The resulting “Haze Famine” killed 9,000 people—a fifth of the country’s population—and led the Danish government to briefly consider evacuating the island’s remaining residents to Denmark.
4. Icelandic television was not broadcast on Thursdays until 1987. Iceland’s government-run television station, which began broadcasting in 1966 and was the country’s sole channel for 20 years, went dark every Thursday until 1987 in order to promote human interaction. It also did not broadcast during the vacation month of July until 1983.
5. Because of its northerly position, the sun shines in Iceland nearly 24 hours a day during the peak of summer. In mid-winter, the area experiences the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) phenomenon on clear nights, and it’s only light about four to five hours each day.
6. Icelandic horses are one of Iceland’s natural treasures. There are over 80,000 Icelandic horses in the country, known for their friendly, docile nature and unique fifth gait. The horses are so beloved, and their purity and bloodlines so protected, that no other horses can enter the country and once an Icelandic horse leaves, it can never return.
7. While very close to Danish and Norwegian, the Icelandic language remains totally unique. Words with far too many consonants abound, and syllables seem to just blur together. Unlike other languages that have changed drastically over the centuries, Icelandic remains very close to its original roots. A Bible from the early 1500s (the first one printed in Icelandic, which can be found in a folk museum in Skógar) can still easily be read by Icelanders today.

Línur, form, taktur, hlutföll og mynstur eru m.a. sameiginlegir þættir í stærðfræði og dansi" (Menningarnott.is)
"Dance conductor Sigríður Soffía Nielsdóttir is the designer for Reykjavik Culture Night and the Vodafone Fireworks. This year the piece is two-fold and is entitled Galaxy - Sky Crystallisation. It is in partnership with the Icelandic Scouts Rescue team and will be located in central Reykjavik as usual. What is beauty? Is beauty partial or impartial and what is its structure? In her design of the fireworks and dance piece, Sigríður Soffía looks at Plato’s and Aristotle’s theories about beauty and the connection of dance with mathematics, especially the use of ‘golden ratio’ in dance performances. Lines, form, rhythm, parts and patterns of lines, shapes, proportions and patterns are common elements of both mathematics and dance" (Menningarnott.is)

Iceland, a Nordic island nation, is defined by its dramatic volcanic landscape of geysers, hot springs, waterfalls, glaciers and black-sand beaches. The capital, Reykjavik, home to the majority of the population, runs on geothermal power and offers a renowned nightlife scene as well as Viking history museums. The glaciers in Vatnajökull and Snæfellsnes national parks are popular for ice climbing, hiking and snowmobiling.
Icelandic culture is founded upon the nation's Scandinavian heritage. Most Icelanders are descendants of Germanic and Gaelic (Celtic) settlers. Icelandic, a North Germanic language, is descended from Old Norse and is closely related to Faroese and West Norwegian dialects. The country's cultural heritage includes traditional Icelandic cuisine, Icelandic literature and medieval sagas. Iceland has the smallest population of any NATO member and is the only one with no standing army, its lightly armed coast guard being in charge of defense.

With a population of only 300,000, Iceland can feel like the most isolated place on earth, yet its capital Reykjavik, is only a three-hour flight from London and just under six from New York.
Reykjavik is relaxed and welcoming, yet possesses a cultural life that holds its own against other European capitals. Most buildings are built simple and low to beat the North Atlantic winds. However, the city is also graced with grand civic architecture inspired by Iceland’s natural beauty, such as the soaring central tower of Hallgrímskirkja.
Many of the country’s most popular sights are within easy reach of Reykjavík. Immerse yourself in the spirit of Iceland, at the Blue Lagoon. Then spend a day or two in The Golden Circle, an area which encompasses three of Iceland’s greatest natural wonders; Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir Geothermal Field, and Gullfoss.
Iceland’s main ring road strings together an endless series of epic landscapes. Less than two hours drive east of Reykjavik are two of the world’s most beautiful waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. Continue eastward towards Vík, Iceland’s southern-most village, where you’ll find the dramatic landscapes of Black Beach, Reynisdrangar, and Dyrholaey. Follow the ring road for another two hours into the ethereal light of Jökulsárlón Lake, where icebergs break away from Europe’s largest glacier and float for years before tumbling out to sea.
Head north and feel the earth rumble at Europe’s mightiest waterfall, Dettifoss. Then explore the Myvatn region, a tranquil lake surrounded by nature in all its violent beauty. Take a careful walk through the boiling landscape of Namafjall, lose yourself amid the lava pillars of Dimmuborgir, and peer into the caldera of Krafla Volcano.
Known as the Capital of the North, Akureyri is the perfect place to warm up and enjoy some creature comforts, before heading off into the wilds again. In Iceland, every side road is a story waiting to unfold. So come, and live your own Icelandic story, it’s one you’ll keep telling for the rest of your days.

Iceland is a mountainous island nation in the north Atlantic Ocean, located between Europe and North America. Though not part of the continental mainland, the country is considered Nordic European. The name of the country—Iceland—may not be that appropriate: although 10% of Iceland is covered by glaciers, it has a surprisingly mild climate and countless geothermal hot-spots. The native spelling ("Ísland") is appropriate in English as well.
See in Iceland
============
The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa and the most famous sight in Iceland.
The Gullfoss waterfall is quite spectacular.
Geysir, the namesake of all geysers, and its neighbour Strokkur which erupts every five minutes or so.
Þingvellir National Park, a beautiful landscape of water-cut lava fields, which is historically important as the site of Iceland's parliament from 930 AD.
Vatnajökull glacier is in Southeast Iceland and is Europe's largest glacier.
Jökulsárlón, the largest glacier lake in Iceland, is located off Route 1 and part of Vatnajökull glacier.
In the colder months, one may frequently get stunning views of the Aurora Borealis, a.k.a. Northern Lights[33] anywhere away from city lights.
Do in Iceland
============
Iceland offers many hiking opportunities. Hiking in Iceland is no easy business, strong walking boots which support your ankles are recommended as the terrain is usually craggy lava rock or springy moss with hidden holes! Likewise, you'll need to be prepared for strong bursts of sideways rain and sleet, especially in winter and shoulder seasons, and particularly in the mountains. Don't stray into unknown terrain without proper equipment, read up more on hiking in Iceland.
Iceland is not well known for skiing or big ski areas but the town of Akureyri in the north has a great little ski area and the mountains of the Troll Peninsula offer world class terrain for ski touring, ski mountaineering and heli skiing.
Ice climbing is great with world class frozen waterfalls and plenty of glaciers.
Glacier hiking is one of Iceland´s most popular tourist things to do with the area of Skaftafell in the SE being the center of activity.
Whale watching available all year from Reykjavik and during the summer from Husavik, but sightings are most common in summer in either place.
There are some good opportunities to go mobiling and this can provide access to otherwise inaccessable areas.
Whitewater rafting is popular. In south you can raft on the big Hvita river. North Iceland has some of the best rivers for rafting, Vestari and Austari Jokulsa. The companies offering rafting are located in Varmahlid. One of them is Bakkaflot with really good facilities (hot pools, accommodation restaurant & drinks) to use after your adventure.

In 2013, Hong Kong students joined the Solar Parcel Exchange Project. They made a pinhole camera with daily-used container and wrote a postcard, sending to the participants in Iceland for taking solargraphy photos.
In early 2014, project tutors brought the cameras and postcards from Hong Kong to Iceland. Taught participants to make pinhole cameras with drink cans in exchange with Hong Kong students' parcel, attached with their living story postcards. Through taking solargraphy with pinhole cameras made by each other, they thus getting to know the other side of the world.
In early summer 2014, Hong Kong students received the cameras made by Icelanders, and started the solargraphy exposure from 3 to 8 months.

Iceland is experiencing a revival of its Viking culture according to commentators in the country.
The country is renown for keeping a tight reign on its language, but now people are increasingly celebrating Viking lifestyle and traditions.
Some historians say the world Viking derives from the old Norse "vik", meaning inlet or small bay.
Vikings arrived in their wooden "drakkar" ships and settled in bays like Reykjavik (Norse for smokey bay) back in the 9th Century AD.
Most of these early settlers arrived from west Norway and other Viking Age settlements in mainland Scandinavia and the British Isles.
During many centuries communication with the outside world was almost non-existent and historians say this has contributed to a spirit of resilience - maybe even stubbornness - typical of modern Iceland.
Furthermore, the old Norse spoken by the first settlers is almost the same modern Icelandic spoken by the 323,000 inhabitants of this island country.
Literally, aeroplane means "flying engine", light bulb means "bright pear" and a video camera is named as a "talking engine".
Icelanders are proud of their untamed language as well as their old names.
Foreign names are banned and there is no such thing as a surname. Icelanders are identified by their first name - which must be chosen from the Icelandic Naming Committee's approved list - and the "son/daughter of" affix.
Kristann Atlasson, son of Atlas, says that despite the many theories of where in Scandinavia those first settlers came from, he feels like a modern day Viking.
He says: "I am not sure about the original Vikings coming from Norway. There is some debate about that. But I grew up thinking I was a Viking,so I'd say that."
But some Icelanders are reluctant to fit the stereotype.
Hekla Allansdottir says: "Personally I don't feel I am a part of a Viking heritage. But a lot of Icelanders do."
The early centuries of the Icelandic nation are known as The Saga Age, because many of the events during that time were recorded in the famous Icelandic Sagas.
The Sagas - a collection of histories, poems and legends from the Viking ancestors - constitute the foundation of Icelandic culture and folklore that has forged the country's identity.
In addition to the harsh Arctic weather there is also the continuous threat from volcanoes in one of the world's most active geological spots.
This is Heimaey island, one of the first Viking settlements in Iceland.
This tiny island off the southern coast of the mainland was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 1973.
The entire population was evacuated during the months of the eruption and redistributed across the main island.
But once the volcanic threat was over most of the inhabitants, in the true Viking spirit, decided to return to Heimaey.
This is a replica of the first wooden church of Iceland, built in this same spot around 1170 following the country's conversion to Christianity.
Local historian, Helga Hallbergsdottir says it was the Viking spirit that helped them reclaim their tiny strip of land rather than settling elsewhere.
She says: "As descendants from them we are very hard working and resourceful. We never give up. And we don't worry much about the future. It's going to be okay."
This is Reykjavik's Saga Museum, a family run exhibition of the first Viking settlers.
These latex models depict many tales from the Sagas.
Most of those first Viking settlers were mainly farmers escaping from the tyranny of Norwegian King Harald I (Harald Fairhair).
They set sail in open boats with their families, slaves and livestock and settled along the coast sustaining themselves mainly by fishing and agriculture.
Between 999 and 1000 AD Christianity was adopted in Iceland with Jon Ogmundsson as the island's first bishop.

Iceland
Listeni/ˈaɪslænd/; Icelandic: Ísland [ˈistlant]) is a Nordic island country between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. It has a population of 329,100 and an area of 103,000 km2 (40,000 sq mi), making it the most sparsely populated country in Europe.[11] The capital and largest city is Reykjavík. Reykjavík and the surrounding areas in the southwest of the country are home to over two-thirds of the population. Iceland is volcanically and geologically active. The interior consists of a plateau characterised by sand and lava fields, mountains and glaciers, while many glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands. Iceland is warmed by the Gulf Stream and has a temperate climate, despite a high latitude just outside the Arctic Circle.
According to Landnámabók, the settlement of Iceland began in 874 CE when the Norwegian chieftain Ingólfr Arnarson became the first permanent settler on the island.[12] In the following centuries, mainly Norwegians and to a smaller extent other Scandinavians settled Iceland, bringing with them thralls of Gaelic origin. From 1262 to 1814, Iceland was ruled by Norway and afterwards by Denmark. The country became independent in 1918 and a republic in 1944.
Until the 20th century, Iceland relied largely on fishing and agriculture. Industrialisation of the fisheries and Marshall Plan aid following World War II brought prosperity and Iceland became one of the wealthiest and most developed nations in the world. In 1994, Iceland became party to the European Economic Area, which supported diversification into economic and financial services.
Affected by the ongoing worldwide financial crisis, the nation's entire banking system systemically failed in October 2008, leading to a severe depression, substantial political unrest, the Icesave dispute, and the institution of capital controls. The economy has since made a significant recovery, in large part due to a surge in tourism.[13][14][15]
Except for the capital controls, Iceland generally has a free-market economy with relatively low taxes compared to other OECD countries.[16] It maintains a Nordic social welfare system that provides universal health care and tertiary education for its citizens.[17] Iceland ranks highly in economic, political and social stability and equality. In 2013, it was ranked as the 13th most-developed country in the world by the United Nations' Human Development Index.[9] Iceland runs almost completely on renewable energy.
Iceland has the smallest population of any NATO member and is the only one with no standing army, its lightly armed coast guard being in charge of defence.

Perhaps no Icelandic restaurant is as well-loved and critically lauded as chef Gunnar Gíslason’s Restaurant Dill, which opened in Reykjavík’s historic Nordic House in 2009. North is Gíslason’s wonderfully personal debut: equal parts recipe book and culinary odyssey, it offers an unparalleled look into a star chef’s creative process. Some groups wanted an interactive discussion, or to speak on a topic of their choice. In most cases, their concerns were different than what we typically see in the US. So in England, Iceland, the Netherlands, and Norway, I talked about the topic that seems to concern them the most; religion protectively portrayed as as a cultural ethnicity.

Despite its tiny population, Iceland has a reputation in the World's Strongest Man competition that stands higher than perhaps any other country's. This small, black rock in the middle of the ocean has produced a lineage of strongmen dating back to the Vikings.
VICE went out there to investigate why this tiny island produces such strong people. Hanging out at Jakabol—a gym run by ex-champion Magnus Ver Magnusson—we met a whole host of Icelandic strongmen, which includes Hafthor "Thor" Bjornsson, the 6'9" star of Game of Thrones.

Our tastes reveal who we are- and who we aren’t. This program injects a perspective-changing awareness into conventional views of food, searching the globe for culinary traditions that disgust some and delight others. From rotten shark meat in Iceland to a goat fetus in India, from cooked rat in Togo to a stew made from bull genitals in Taiwan, the video showcases numerous unusual delicacies. It also reminds us that while mainstream, Anglo-American culture takes a dim view of dietary customs beyond its horizons, that kind of squeamishness can be a two-way street.
