Spaceflight Anniversary: Launch of Sputnik 1 -- October 4, 1957. Sputnik 1, the first artificial Earth satellite was launched into an elliptical low Earth orbit by the Soviet Union fifty-five years ago on October 4, 1957. The surprise launch precipitated the American Sputnik crisis, began the Space Age and triggered the Space Race, a part of the larger Cold War. Sputnik was also scientifically valuable. The density of the upper atmosphere could be deduced from its drag on the orbit, and its radio signals, monitored by amateur radio operators worldwide, gave information about the ionosphere. After about 37 million miles and 3 months in orbit Sputnik 1 fell back to Earth and burned up in the atmosphere on January 4, 1958.

The Soviet Space Program Sputnick Declassified Full Documentary
Sputnik 1 (/ˈspʌtnɪk/; Russian: Спутник-1 [ˈsputnʲɪk] "Satellite-1", or ПС-1 ["PS-1", i.e. Russian: Простейший Спутник-1 "Elementary Satellite 1"])was the first...
Sputnik 1 (/ˈspʌtnɪk/; Russian: Спутник-1 [ˈsputnʲɪk] "Satellite-1", or ПС-1 ["PS-1", i.e. Russian: Простейший Спутник-1 "Elementary Satellite 1"])was the first artificial Earth satellite. The Soviet Union launched it into an elliptical low Earth orbit on 4 October 1957. It was a 58 cm (23 in) diameter polished metal sphere, with four external radio antennae to broadcast radio pulses. It was visible all around the Earth and its radio pulses were detectable. This surprise success precipitated the American Sputnik crisis and triggered the Space Race, a part of the larger Cold War. The launch ushered in new political, military, technological, and scientific developments.Sputnik itself provided scientists with valuable information, even though it was not equipped with scientific instruments. The density of the upper atmosphere could be deduced from its drag on the orbit, and the propagation of its radio signals gave information about the ionosphere.
Sputnik 1 was launched during the International Geophysical Year from Site No.1/5, at the 5th Tyuratam range, in Kazakh SSR (now at the Baikonur Cosmodrome). The satellite travelled at about 29,000 kilometres per hour (18,000 mph; 8,100 m/s), taking 96.2 minutes to complete each orbit. It transmitted on 20.005 and 40.002 MHzwhich were monitored by amateur radio operators throughout the world. The signals continued for 21 days until the transmitter batteries ran out on 26 October 1957.Sputnik 1 burned up on 4 January 1958, as it fell from orbit upon reentering Earth's atmosphere, after travelling about 70 million km (43.5 million miles) and spending 3 months in orbit.

Sputnik crisis
The Sputnik Crisis was a period of public fear and anxiety about the perceived technological gap between the United States and Soviet Union caused by the successful launch of Sputnik 1, the world's first artificial satellite. The crisis was a key event in the early Cold War that triggered the creation of NASA and Space Race between the two superpowers. The satellite was launched on October 4, 1957

The launch ushered in new political, military, technological, and scientific developments. Sputnik 1 burned up on 4 January 1958, as it fell from orbit upon reentering Earth's atmosphere, after travelling about 70 million km (43.5 million miles) and spending three months in orbit.
Спутник-2 (Sputnik 2) was the second spacecraft launched into Earth orbit, on 3 November 1957, and the first to carry a living animal, a dog named Laika. Sputnik 2 was a 4-metre (13 foot) high cone-shaped capsule with a base diameter of 2 meters (6.6 feet) that weighed around 500 kg, though it was not designed to separate from the rocket core that brought it to orbit, bringing the total mass in orbit to 7.79 tons. It contained several compartments for radio transmitters, a telemetry system, a programming unit, a regeneration and temperature-control system for the cabin, and scientific instruments. A separate sealed cabin contained the dog Laika. Engineering and biological data were transmitted using the Tral D telemetry system, transmitting data to Earth for a 15-minute period during each orbit. Two photometers were on board for measuring solar radiation (ultraviolet and x-ray emissions) and cosmic rays. Sputnik 2 did not contain a television camera; TV images of dogs on Korabl-Sputnik 2 are commonly misidentified as Laika.

The satellite was launched on October 4, 1957 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. The term was coined by then US President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The launch ushered in new political, military, technological, and scientific developments.

"Vodka for everyone!"
Sergei Korolev about Sputnik 1
Sputnik 1 - a small spacecraft, the first artificial satellite of the Soviet Union, and even of the Earth.
It was so primitively constructed, it looked like a bowling ball with attached car antennas. The enclosure was made of 2 mm sheet. Inside it had 3 batteries and a radio transmitter, transmitting over and over on the 20 and 40 MHz the most annoying sound in the world sounding like a beep, beep, beep.
Satellite was launched by rocket R-7 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on October 4, 1957. The batteries ran out on 25 October. After traveling 60 million km (circumambulated Earth 1,400 times) it burned down on January 4, 1958. The success of Sputnik 1 was one of the main topics in the press around the world, e.g. in "The Communist Truth" or in "New York Times".

Sputnik 1 ) was the first artificial Earth satellite. It was a 58 cm diameter polished metal sphere, with four external radio antennas to broadcast radio pulses. The Soviet Union launched it into an elliptical low Earth orbit on 4 October 1957. It was visible all around the Earth and its radio pulses were detectable. The surprise success precipitated the American Sputnik crisis and triggered the Space Race, a part of the larger Cold War. The launch ushered in new political, military, technological, and scientific developments.

Sputnik 1 (Russian: "Спу́тник-1" Russian pronunciation: [ˈsputnʲɪk], "Satellite-1", ПС-1 (PS-1, i.e. "Простейший Спутник-1", or Elementary Satellite-1)) was the first artificial Earth satellite. It was a 58 cm (23 in) diameter polished metal sphere, with four external radio antennas to broadcast radio pulses.
Sputnik itself provided scientists with valuable information. The density of the upper atmosphere could be deduced from its drag on the orbit, and the propagation of its radio signals gave information about the ionosphere.
