Senator Mike Gravel - "Can you come to any other conclusion as a body that our nation is essentially ruled by a military junta?"
Dr. Steven Greer - "Ya, I think it's not just military. I think it's a large macroeconomic and financial system. So it's the military industrial corporate financial complex."
Greer- "We're talking about something that if it's disclosed would threaten the privately owned interests in the oil, gas, coal, and utility industries that are estimated in the multi hundred trillions of dollars. What tail is wagging the dog of our democracy and that's the big question."
Sen. Mike Gravel adds that 1350 corporations own 60 percent of the wealth of the world.

Myanmar has come a long way, from a military junta rule to the election of a civilian government to be led by the National League for Democracy (NLD), the party of Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. Why did voters overwhelmingly vote against the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), which is led by former high-ranking military generals, even though, as they claim in the election campaign, they introduced democracy? Will Suu Kyi’s party be able to bring change? The extremist Buddhist group, known as “Ma Ba Tha,” campaigned for the USDP, so is there a nexus between this Southeast Asian country’s powerful military and intolerant monks and nuns? And is there press freedom in the country? The Diplomat seeks answers to these questions in an interview with Kyaw Zwa Moe, editor of the English-language edition ofThe Irrawaddy magazine, a publication run by exiled Burmese journalists in Thailand which returned to Yangon two years after Myanmar’s military announced reforms in 2010.

Thai junta picks panel to write constitution after draft rejected

Thailand's military government, which took power in May last year, appointed a committee to draft the country's 20th constitution on Monday after a previous draft was rejected, delaying promised elections until at least 2017.
The junta-appointed legislature dismissed the military-backed constitution last month after it was met with strong opposition by almost all sides of the political divide, in effect playing into the military's hands by prolonging army rule.
A major point of contention was the creation of a National Committee on Reform and Reconciliation Strategy that would be dominated by the military, allowing it to exercise power over the executive and legislative branches in a vaguely defined "crisis" situation.
The new, 21-member committee has six months to write a new draft and will need approval by the legislature and to put the constitution to a referendum, something that would delay elections until at least 2017, said deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam.
Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha also appointed 200 members of a National Reform Steering Assembly to oversee the junta's political and economic reform plans, with nearly half from the police and military.
The assembly replaces the now-defunct National Reform Council which was dissolved after lawmakers voted to reject the constitution draft last month.
The military took power in May 2014 after months of political unrest. The junta, formally known as the National Council for Peace and Order, scrapped the constitution and set about writing one that critics say was aimed at consolidating the army's already-sweeping powers.
Kan Yuenyong, an analyst at Siam Intelligence Unit think tank, said the junta's aim of a constitution that gives the military overarching powers remained unchanged.
"At the end of the day, the junta has the same aims it did before, namely, it believes the political system doesn't work and they need an umbrella organization to oversee the country and to weaken the electoral process but how they will do that and make it more palatable to people remains to be seen," he said.
Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said Meechai Ruchupan, an adviser to the junta, would head the new committee.
Meechai led a junta-appointed panel that drafted the 2006 constitution, dubbed the "anti-Thaksin" charter because it appeared aimed at preventing the return of ousted former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Thaksin was deposed in 2006 after being accused of corruption. His sister, Yingluck, was removed from power in May 2014 after being found guilty of abuse of power. Days later, the army staged a coup, ending months of protests in Bangkok aimed at ousting Yingluck's government.

On 2 April 1982, Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands, a remote UK colony in the South Atlantic. The move led to a brief, but bitter war.
Argentina's military junta hoped to restore its support at a time of economic crisis, by reclaiming sovereignty of the islands. It said it had inherited them from Spain in the 1800s and they were close to South America.
The UK, which had ruled the islands for 150 years, quickly chose to fight. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said the 1,800 Falklanders were "of British tradition and stock". A task force was sent to reclaim the islands, 8,000 miles away.
In the fighting that followed, 655 Argentine and 255 British servicemen lost their lives, as did three Falkland Islanders.

9 11 1973 in Santiago Chile Augusto Pinochet and Junta Leaders speak to public.
The 1973 Chilean coup d'état was a watershed event in both the Cold War and the history of Chile. Following an extended period of social and political unrest between the center-right dominated Congress of Chile and the elected socialist President Salvador Allende, as well as economic warfare ordered by U.S. President Richard Nixon, Allende was overthrown by the armed forces and national police.
The military replaced the Unidad Popular government and established a Junta de Gobierno that suspended all political activity in the country and repressed left-wing movements, especially the Communist and Socialist parties and the Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria (MIR). Allende's appointed army chief, Augusto Pinochet, rose to supreme power within a year of the coup, formally assuming power in late 1974. The United States government, which had worked to create the conditions for the coup,[6] promptly recognized the junta government and supported it in consolidating power.
During the air raids and ground attacks that preceded the coup, Allende gave his last speech, in which he vowed to stay in the presidential palace, denouncing offers for safe passage should he choose exile over confrontation. Direct witness accounts of Allende's death agree that he committed suicide in the palace.
Before Pinochet's rule, Chile had for decades been hailed as a beacon of democracy and political stability while the rest of South America had been plagued by military juntas and Caudillismo. A weak insurgent movement against the Pinochet regime was maintained inside Chile by elements sympathetic to the former Allende government. An internationally supported plebiscite in 1988 eventually removed Pinochet from power.

Thailand’s military junta says Monday’s deadly bomb attack in Bangkok was “unlikely” to be the work of international terrorists.
According to the country’s police chief, at least 10 people are suspected of being involved in the atrocity which killed 20 people and injured dozens.
On Wednesday the police issued an arrest warrant for an unidentified man it’s thought may have planted the bomb.
“Security agencies have cooperated with agencies from allied countries and have come to the preliminary conclusion that the incident is unlikely to be linked to international terrorism,” said junta spokesman Winthai Suvaree.
He added that Chinese tourists – many of whom visit the Erawan shrine – did not seem to have been particularly targeted.
The authorities’ comments are likely to refocus attention on domestic groups.
There has been speculation over the opposition Red Shirts, but their leader has denied the movement was involved.
Another possibility is that a previously unknown group was behind the attack.
Most victims were Thai: others were nationals from China, Hong Kong, the UK, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

There has been speculation over the opposition Red Shirts, but their leader has denied the movement was involved.
Another possibility is that a previously unknown group was behind the attack.
Most victims were Thai: others were nationals from China, Hong Kong, the UK, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

n November, Myanmar holds its first elections since 2010, when the military junta handed over power to a nominally civilian government. Much of the euphoria that accompanied the transition to quasi-civilian rule has evaporated. The military-authored constitution prevents Nobel Peace Laureate and leader of the opposition National League for Democracy Aung San Suu Kyi from taking the Presidency, nevertheless the NLD is expected to take a substantial share of the vote. An attempt to amend the constitution failed in late June and there are indications of behind-the-scenes horse-trading between the government of the unpopular President Thein Sein, the NLD, and the military.
Proponents of extremist Buddhist nationalism have proved their ability to influence policy, pre-genocidal conditions against Rohingya are in place in western Rakhine State, students have held rallies and marches over education, as have farmers, activists and monks over land rights. There's been a marked increase in the arrests of journalists and political activists over the last year. Meanwhile, sporadic battles continue to break out, linked to big development projects, between the military and ethnic armies on the borders, forcing thousands of people from their homes, despite supposed ceasefires and the internationally supported peace talks between the government and most of the combatants. The opening of the economy to international investment and increased aid are yet to benefit the majority of the people of Burma.
This panel discussion at the FCCT aims to set out the big picture in the remaining months before the polls are held. A panel of experts and journalists will set out the political landscape, the stakeholders and the expected winners and losers.
- Aung Zaw, until recently blacklisted from Myanmar, is the founder and editor-in-chief of The Irrawaddy, a news organization established in 1993 dedicated to Myanmar-related news through a monthly magazine and daily news site published for 20 years from outside Myanmar, and one of the most authoritative sources of news from inside the then isolated country. The Irrawaddy was allowed to open an office in Myanmar in 2012, but has still come under pressure from the quasi civilian government. In 2014 Aung Zaw was a recipient of the International Press freedom Award of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
- Dr. Khin Zaw Win, a dentist by training, once worked with ministries of health in Myanmar and Malaysia, and with UNICEF in Yangon. He was imprisoned in July 1994 by the military regime that then ran Myanmar, for peacefully criticizing the regime. Amnesty International considered him a prisoner of conscience, and his case was one of only two political prisoners for whom UNESCO issued a public appeal. Dr. Zaw was one was one of more than 200 political prisoners released from jails in Myanmar on July 6, 2005. Since then, he has been active in civil society on a range of issues as Director of the Tampadipa Insititute, and is sought after as an analyst of political trends.

An Argentine former pilot, who is suspected of helping kill opponents during the country's military junta, faced Dutch prosecution witnesses via video link from Buenos Aires on Wednesday.
Julio Poch, who holds Dutch citizenship now, was extradited to Argentina in 2010 for allegedly flying planes that carried hundreds of dissidents that were later drugged and thrown out of the planes in mid-air during Argentina's 1976-1983 "dirty war."
The 62-year-old Poch is on trial in Buenos Aires where the court has requested that the Dutch pilots be questioned by video link.
On Wednesday, the first two pilots are expected to sit in a courtroom in Rotterdam to be questioned by the Argentine prosecutor, judges and Poch himself.
Two others will follow a week later.
Poch has requested a further six witnesses be heard from Rotterdam, this time for the defence.
Poch denies involvement in the so called "death flights" during the country's military regime, but allegedly told a number of pilots at Dutch airline Transavia (air charter company), where he worked between 1988 and 2010, that he was involved in those flights.

Hundreds of protesters marched through the Chilean capital on Wednesday to mark International Human Rights Day.
Around 500 people took part in the march to the La Moneda presidential palace in Santiago, calling for justice for the victims of General Augusto Pinochet's military dictatorship (1973-1990).
Among those marching was a group of women who were tortured by the regime.
"We are strong women who will go on to the end denouncing all impunity, and everything that happened in this country," said survivor Nieves Ayress.
Relatives of people disappeared during Pinochet's rule over Chile were also present at the march, holding up photos of their loved ones and calling for people involved to be punished.
"We want truth, justice and punishment for every last criminal,"said Juana Cerda, a daughter of one of the people to be disappeared by the military dictatorship.
Pinochet's dictatorship claimed over 40-thousand victims, among those more than 3,000 opponents who were executed or disappeared.
Although there are more than a thousand open cases against a number of ex-military officials accused of human rights violations, only 70 soldiers and a handful of police officers and civil officials are in prison for their crimes.

STORYLINE
Activists in Myanmar commemorated the 25th anniversary of what's known as "8888"; the massive pro-democracy protests in August 1988 that shortly afterwards triggered a bloody crackdown.
Demonstrators on Thursday defied an order by Burmese police to stop the march, that was considered illegal.
Most of the participants in the march were activists from the 88 uprising, political prisoners, National League for Democracy (NLD) members, relatives of the victims and members of student unions.
To commemorate the victims, a prayer was held attended by representatives of Hindu, Christian, Muslim and Buddhist religions.
A parallel ceremony was being held at the Myanmar Convention Centre, attended by members of the current government.
On August 8, 1988, peaceful demonstrations against Yangon's military regime were staged across Myanmar.
Moe Aung was a private tutor who took part in the 1988 demonstrations, along with prominent student leaders.

STORYLINE:
Over two-hundred Burmese residents in Japan staged a rally in the streets of Tokyo on Thursday, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the massive pro-democracy protests that took place in Myanmar in August 1988 and shortly afterwards triggered a bloody crackdown.
Protesters in Japan held up flags of the National League for Democracy (NLD) party, and some wore T-shirts which showed "8.8.88".
On August 8, 1988, peaceful demonstrations against Yangon's military regime were staged across Myanmar.
Hundreds of civilians are believed to have been killed in a violent crackdown on the protests by authorities, with many others thrown into prison.
Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi emerged as a leader of the democracy movement during the protests.
Her political party swept elections held in 1990, but the military refused to let it take power.
50-year old Win Naing is pinning his hopes on the upcoming elections to change the political landscape.
"Our protests are not finished. I will continue protesting until the elections of 2015."
"We want really, democracy. It's our wish" said Hannini Htun, who also noted that many political prisoners have yet to be released.
Myanmar, like China, is a nation where dictatorial rule has become less harsh, though it remains far from truly democratic.
After half-century of harsh military rule, a quasi-civilian government, which was installed two years ago, has implemented sweeping reforms, releasing Suu Kyi from house arrest, relaxing restrictions against peaceful assembly, opening up the media and throwing away the censor's pen.

The last victims of Argentina’s military dictatorship knew nothing of their true identities. One day though, their worlds turned upside down when they learned a terrible truth. Everything they knew, their families, their names, was all part of a monstrous and cruel conspiracy. It was only through the tireless efforts of their natural grandmothers, who searched for decades, that these children had their real identities returned to them. The natural parents were among the “disappeared,” former activists against the military Junta. Now, aware of the web of deception that surrounded their early years, they have to learn to live as their true selves, and with their past.

On the Trail of Tortured Political Prisoners, Greece Under the Junta, Cuba (1994)

The Greek military junta of 1967–74 (alternatively The Regime of the Colonels (Greek: Το καθεστώς των Συνταγματαρχών, To kathestos ton Syntagmatarhon), or in Greece The Junta (/ˈdʒʌntə/ or /ˈhʊntə/; Greek: Χούντα, [ˈxunda]), The Dictatorship (Greek: Η Δικτατορία, I diktatoría) and The Seven Years (Greek: Η Επταετία, I eptaetía) was a series of right-wing military juntas that ruled Greece following the 1967 Greek coup d'état led by a group of colonels on 21 April 1967. The dictatorship ended on 24 July 1974.
The historical repercussions of the junta were profound and are still felt to this day in Greece. Internally the absence of civil rights and the oppression that followed created a sense of fear and persecution among many in the population creating trauma and division that persisted long after the fall of the junta. The Cyprus debacle created a tragedy that is still unfolding.
While the Cyprus fiasco was due to the actions of Ioannidis,[89] it was Papadopoulos who started the cycle of coups. Externally the absence of human rights in a country belonging to the Western Bloc during the Cold War was a continuous source of embarrassment for the free world (considering Greece is seen as the inventor of democracy) and this and other reasons made Greece an international pariah abroad and interrupted her process of integration with the European Union with incalculable opportunity costs.[85]
The 21 April regime remains highly controversial to this day, with most Greeks holding very strong and polarized views in regards to it. According to a survey by Kapa Research published in the center-left newspaper To Vima in 2002, the majority of the electoral body (54.7%) consider the regime to have been bad or harmful for Greece while 20.7% consider it to have been good for Greece and 19.8% believe that it was neither good nor harmful.[90] In April 2013, the Metron Analysis Poll, found that 30% of Greeks yearned for the ´better´days of the Junta.[91]
The experiences in Greece were formative for several CIA officers, including Clair George and Gust Avrakotos. Gust, for example, dealt with the aftermath when Revolutionary Organization 17 November murdered his superior, CIA station chief Richard Welch in 1975. Many of his junta-connected associates were also assassinated in this time period. Gust himself had his cover blown by the media and his life became endangered.[2] In 1999, U.S. President Bill Clinton apologised on the behalf of the U.S. government for supporting the military junta in the name of Cold War tactics.[92][93]
There has been speculation that lingering social effects of the junta played a role in the rise of Golden Dawn, an extreme right-wing party which gained eighteen seats in parliament in two successive elections in 2012, in the midst of Greece's ongoing debt crisis. Golden Dawn's leader, Nikolaos Michaloliakos, met the leaders of the junta while in prison and was inspired to lay the foundations for the party. Some have linked alleged support of Golden Dawn by Hellenic Police officers to the party's statements sympathizing with the junta, which commentators note would appeal to policemen whose livelihoods are threatened by harsh austerity measures.
