Sweeping to power in an unexpected landslide victory, elections in Turkey have handed President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's AK Party another four years at the helm and a parliamentary majority.
Ending five months of political deadlock, Sunday's electoral victory marked a turnaround for the country and ushered a return to single-party rule.
Drawing more than 4 million more votes than it did in June's elections, the poll handed Erdogan a fresh mandate to lead Turkey and address one of the country's biggest challenges - the economy.
Turkey's currency, the lira, has tumbled more than 25 percent against the euro and dollar this year, and has become one of the worst performing emerging market currencies in the world.
The country's current account deficit has also widened to $45bn, with Turkey - essentially - spending much more than it earns.
According to the IMF and World Bank, the once booming economy that grew 9.2 percent in 2010 is now forecast to grow by just 3 percent this year, and 2.9 percent in 2016.
And the vital tourism and export sectors have also shrunk. Tourism revenue was down in the first quarter of this year and the export goal of $173bn for 2015 will likely not be met.
So, can the government turn around an economy struggling with rising inflation, slowing growth and a shrinking tourism sector?
Murat Yulek, a professor at Istanbul Commerce University and former IMF economist joins Counting the Cost to discuss the AK party's economic policies.

The economy of Turkey is defined as an emerging market economy by the IMF and is largely developed, making Turkey one of the world's newly industrialized countries. The country is among the world's leading producers of agricultural products; textiles; motor vehicles, ships and other transportation equipment; construction materials; consumer electronics and home appliances. In recent years, Turkey had a rapidly growing private sector, yet the state still plays a major role in industry, banking, transport, and communications.
Turkey has the world's 15th largest GDP-PPP and 17th largest Nominal GDP. The country is a founding member of the OECD (1961) and one of the G-20 major economies (1999). Since December 31, 1995, Turkey is also a part of the EU Customs Union. Mean graduate pay was $10.02 per manhour in 2010.
The CIA classifies Turkey as a developed country. Turkey is often classified as a newly industrialized country by economists and political scientists; while Merrill Lynch, the World Bank and The Economist magazine describe Turkey as an emerging market economy.

Turkey (Turkish: Türkiye), known officially as the Republic of Turkey (
Türkiye Cumhuriyeti (help·info)), is a Eurasian country located in Western Asia (mostly in the Anatolian peninsula) and in East Thrace in Southeastern Europe. Turkey is bordered by eight countries: Bulgaria to the northwest; Greece to the west; Georgia to the northeast; Armenia, Azerbaijan (the exclave of Nakhchivan) and Iran to the east; and Iraq and Syria to the southeast. The Mediterranean Sea and Cyprus are to the south; the Aegean Sea is to the west; and the Black Sea is to the north. The Sea of Marmara, the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles (which together form the Turkish Straits) demarcate the boundary between East Thrace and Anatolia; they also separate Europe and Asia.
Turkey is one of the six independent Turkic states. The vast majority of the population are Muslims. The country's official language is Turkish, whereas Kurdish and Zazaki languages are spoken by Kurds and Zazas, who constitute 18% of the population.

Turkish Airlines Economy Class Review: TK350 IST-ALA
Experience onboard Turkish Airlines B737-800 aircraft on a 5 hour flight between Istanbul, Turkey and Almaty, Kazakhstan. It was a full cabin in Economy Class on this red-eye flight but it was comfortable nonetheless. The meal was excellent though it was unfortunate that this aircraft did not offer a personal entertainment system. Despite the full flight, I was able to sleep soundly after my meal.

Ending five months of political deadlock, Sunday's electoral victory marked a turnaround for the country and ushered a return to single-party rule.
Drawing more than 4 million more votes than it did in June's elections, the poll handed Erdogan a fresh mandate to lead Turkey and address one of the country's biggest challenges - the economy.
Turkey's currency, the lira, has tumbled more than 25 percent against the euro and dollar this year, and has become one of the worst performing emerging market currencies in the world.
The country's current account deficit has also widened to $45bn, with Turkey - essentially - spending much more than it earns.
According to the IMF and World Bank, the once booming economy that grew 9.2 percent in 2010 is now forecast to grow by just 3 percent this year, and 2.9 percent in 2016.
And the vital tourism and export sectors have also shrunk. Tourism revenue was down in the first quarter of this year and the export goal of $173bn for 2015 will likely not be met.
So, can the government turn around an economy struggling with rising inflation, slowing growth and a shrinking tourism sector?
Murat Yulek, a professor at Istanbul Commerce University and former IMF economist joins Counting the Cost to discuss the AK party's economic policies.

Experience onboard Turkish Airlines B737-800 aircraft on a 5 hour flight between Istanbul, Turkey and Almaty, Kazakhstan.
It was a full cabin in Economy Class on this red-eye flight but it was comfortable nonetheless. The meal was excellent though it was unfortunate that this aircraft did not offer a personal entertainment system. Despite the full flight, I was able to sleep soundly after my meal.
Onboard this Central Asia-bound flight, what impressed me was how kindly the passengers treated each other onboard. Strangers moddle-coddled the small children and smiles were shared all around, despite the ethnic diversity of passengers onboard. Onboard, it reminded me that kindness is indeed universal and we were all sharing a good flight experience together.
