This film explores South Africa's apartheid policy, focusing on issues such as race relations, political practices, and segregated dwellings in the 1950's.
Apartheid (from Afrikaans "the state of being apart") was a system of racial segregation enforced through legislation by the National Party (NP) governments, who were the ruling party from 1948 to 1994, of South Africa, under which the rights of the majority black inhabitants of South Africa were curtailed and white supremacy and Afrikaner minority rule was maintained. Apartheid was developed after World War II by the Afrikaner-dominated National Party and Broederbond organizations and was practiced also in South West Africa, which was administered by South Africa under a League of Nations mandate (revoked in 1966 via United Nations Resolution 2145), until it gained independence as Namibia 1990.
Racial segregation in South Africa began in colonial times under Dutch and British rule. However, apartheid as an official policy was introduced following the general election of 1948. New legislation classified inhabitants into four racial groups ("native", "white", "colored", and "Asian"), and residential areas were segregated, sometimes by means of forced removals. Non-white political representation was completely abolished in 1970, and starting in that year black people were deprived of their citizenship, legally becoming citizens of one of ten tribally based self-governing homelands called Bantustans, four of which became nominally independent states. The government segregated education, medical care, beaches, and other public services, and provided black people with services inferior to those of white people.
Apartheid sparked significant internal resistance and violence as well as a long arms and trade embargo against South Africa. Since the 1950s, a series of popular uprisings and protests were met with the banning of opposition and imprisoning of anti-apartheid leaders. As unrest spread and became more effective and militarized, state organizations responded with repression and violence. This, along with the sanctions placed on South Africa by the West made it increasingly difficult for the government to maintain the regime.
Reforms to apartheid in the 1980s failed to quell the mounting opposition, and in 1990 President Frederik Willem de Klerk began negotiations to end apartheid, culminating in multi-racial democratic elections in 1994, which were won by the African National Congress under Nelson Mandela. The vestiges of apartheid still shape South African politics and society. Although the official abolishment of Apartheid occurred in 1990 with repeal of the last of the remaining Apartheid laws, the end of Apartheid is widely regarded as arising from the 1994 democratic general elections. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apartheid_in_South_Africa
The Apartheid Legislation
The Apartheid Legislation in South Africa was a series of different laws and acts which were to help the apartheid-government to enforce the segregation of different races and cement the power and the dominance by the Whites, of substantially European descent, over the other race groups. Starting in 1948, the Nationalist Government in South Africa enacted laws to define and enforce segregation. With the enactment of apartheid laws in 1948, racial discrimination was institutionalized. The effect of the legislation was invariably favorable to the whites and detrimental to the non-white racial groups namely the Colored's, Indians and Blacks.
What makes South Africa's apartheid era different from segregation in other countries is the systematic way in which the National Party, which came into power in 1948, formalized the Apartheid rules through the law.

Politically an African nationalist and democratic socialist, he served as the President of the African National Congress from 1991 to 1997. Mandela served 27 years in prison. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelson_Mandela

The mere mention of South Africa in a discussion provokes deep images of institutional racism, discrimination and horrific violence. An in-depth look at the controversial history of South Africa, Stefan Molyneux separates the fact from fiction and discusses: the communist history of South Africa, the South African Frontier Wars, the Suppression of Communism Act, the Bantu, population growth, racial demographics, catastrophic economic decisions, the devaluation of the S.A. Rand, rampant price inflation, affirmative action, family structure, one of the worst education systems in the world, unemployment, Eskom’s rolling power outages, white flight, rising criminality, an astronomical murder rate, horrific rape statistics, the rampant sexual abuse of children, prevalence of HIV/AIDS, white farmer genocide, police corruption, President Jacob Zuma, the “kill the Boer” song, life expectancy, road fatalities and the untold history of Apartheid.

Under apartheid, South Africa's police were notorious for extrajudicial killings and the routine use of torture against political dissidents. Only later did it emerge that these same techniques were being used even when the victims were suspected criminals, rather than enemies of the racist state.
On the birth of the Rainbow Nation two decades ago, most people believed that this would quickly become a thing of the past, that a new era of prosperity, justice and social harmony would make such abuses unthinkable.
But in the past 20 years, with both prosperity and social equality remaining an unfulfilled dream for many South Africans, violent crime has been on the rise. This in turn has generated an increasingly aggressive response from the police - under intense political pressure to stop muggings, armed robberies, gang warfare and murder on the streets of the country's major cities.
The problem is that some of those charged with upholding the law have been breaking it themselves. Elements of South Africa's police now stand accused of being out of control in a way that is dangerously reminiscent of apartheid's darkest days.
In this episode of Africa Investigates, veteran South African journalists Stephan Hofstatter and Mzilikazi wa Afrika, from the country's Sunday Times newspaper, examine the activities of one elite police unit and allegations that its members have been responsible for the torture and murder of criminal suspects.

Born young enough to not know the legalised racism during apartheid, or to see hundreds die in the struggle for freedom, what does it mean to be South Africa's 'born free' generation?
"We're not raised to look at colour. That was our parents' struggle, our struggle is financial independence" explains Mbongeni, a young fashion designer. As the 'born free' generation strides out against the continuing injustices in South Africa; young entrepreneurs like Mbongeni are challenging the past to make a better future. His shirts are daubed with "kaffir" a white racial slur, as an attempt to heal the past and present, to "make peace". Sibu a young fashionista expresses this hope; "the arts say about our generation that we don't need anyone to build us, make us money or give us anything." Despite poverty, unemployment and violence, the 'born free' generation are above all pro-active, fiercely individualistic, and optimistic to change South Africa for the better.

«Township Lessons from the Cape of Good Hope» (2014) tells the story of people living in the Cape Flats area outside of Cape Town, South Africa 20 years after Apartheid.
How do township residents in slums cope with crime, unemployment and poverty in a country still very much struggling with racism, underdevelopment and inequality?
If you want to support the portrayed NGO and their projects in Lavender Hill, they are happy to receive your donations: http://www.philisaabafazi.org

Prime Evil (2010): This film focuses on South Africa's most notorious government assassin under the apartheid regime, Eugene De Kock, nicknamed 'Prime Evil'. The story begins from his childhood where he was "described by his brother as a shy, lonely child."
For downloads and more information visit http://journeyman.tv/61205/short-films-archive/prime-evil.html
De Kock started to make a name for himself during the Rhodesian war, in which he was described as a "warrior". However De Kock "never received psychological treatment for the war trauma he suffered in Namibia". In 1983 De Kock was transferred to the police death squad where they "hunted down and killed anti apartheid activists". During the next few years the farm at Vlakplass was used for their regime, where they "were soldiers, used to fight a secret war."
At the peak of De Kock's career he had been decorated for bravery, outstanding service and combating terrorism. This however did not last long and by 1992 De Kock was involved in common crime himself. And in 1994 after the elections De Kock was arrested, "he was charged with 121 crimes" and "more than 80 state witnesses testified against him, many former Vlakplass policemen." De Kock was "apartheid's most evil face."
