• Merck celebrates 80 year Seven Seas anniversary
• Merck announces the start of “Merck Africa Diabetes Days” with the aim to provide 300,000 people with free diabetes screening and education in 2016
Merck (MerckGroup.com), a leading science and technology company, today kicked off its second Merck Africa Luminary for the first time in Kenya.
During the inauguration of this year’s Merck Africa Luminary, Karl Ludwig Kley, Chairman of Executive Board and CEO of Merck emphasized, “We are pleased to engage with Kenya Ministry of Health and Government of Nairobi to improve access to better healthcare as part of our commitment to the social and economic development in the country. We will continue working closely with African governments, healthcare stakeholders and academia to improve the quality of healthcare across the continent.”
Merck has brought more than 200 African healthcare providers from more than 20 African countries to benefit from medical and scientific education and discussion on topics like healthcare capacity building and access to high quality, innovative and sustainable healthcare solutions.
At the end of the Luminary’s inauguration session, Merck celebrated the 80 year anniversary of its Seven Seas brand with participants. Seven Seas has 80 years of heritage in perfecting marine oil supplements and providing people with life-long wellbeing through its extensive selection of healthy supplements and oils.
During the Merck Africa Luminary, Merck announced a pan African campaign “Merck Africa Diabetes Days” dubbed “Every Day is a Diabetes Day” to encourage people to think about diabetes every day.
As part of this campaign, in 2016 Merck plans to provide 300,000 people in Africa with free screening and education about diabetes. The campaign will be kicked off first in Kenya in partnership with Diabetes Management Information Centre, Ministry of Health and the County Government of Nairobi and will extend to more African countries in the future.
Merck Africa Luminary is an annual forum where African healthcare providers meet to discuss and develop different strategies and programs to improve access to innovative and equitable healthcare solutions across the continent. The first Merck Africa Luminary was held in Darmstadt, Germany in 2014
Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Health, James Macharia stated at the event in Nairobi today: “We are delighted to host the annual “Merck Africa Luminary” for the first time in Africa, here in Kenya. Our strategic partnership with Merck will add value to our country not only for boosting the healthcare sector but for the country’s economic progression as well. Private sector has so much influence over people’s life styles”.
The Governor of Nairobi County, Evans Kidero, said during his welcome speech: “We are happy to partner with reputable and innovative companies such as Merck. We believe that the only way to effectively prevent, detect and treat the rising number of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cancer, diabetes and hypertension in Africa is through establishing Public Private Partnership models between health ministries, NGOs, academia, patient associations and industry in implementing successful programs. The size and complexity of the task is so large that no single organization or institution can manage on its own, so integration of efforts is necessary to achieve the health gains that our nation deserves.”
The participants also discussed the “Merck More Than Mother” campaign during the Luminary. The campaign was kicked off in June 2015 in collaboration with University of Nairobi and Kenya Women of Parliament Association
Merck has delivered healthcare services in Africa since 1897. With a population rising faster than in any other global market and a growing middle class, the company is increasingly tapping into the continent’s innovative spirit to create health awareness and help respond to unmet medical needs. The Group’s Executive Board is visiting 10 African countries this week to underscore its commitment and rising importance of the continent. Among others, Merck seeks to start local production diabetes treatment Glucophage in Algeria, inaugurate an office in Nigeria and start the sale of its Muse® Auto CD4/CD4% System to detect HIV.

This seminar took place on Thursday 23 October 2014, 4.30-6pm in Wallis Room (St John’s College, 3 South Bailey, Durham)
ABSTRACT:
The church has been involved in health care throughout its history but with the advent of the NHS its role in the UK health scene has gradually declined. Yet there are theological and missiological reasons for the church’s engagement with health. This seminar demonstrates one practical way in which local churches can re-engage with the health needs of their local community and enables discussion around the implications of this for the mission of a local church.

Ministry of Health and Family Welfare joins hands with UNICEF India to launch Hepatitis B Awareness Drive with Amitabh Bachchan
MUMBAI, November 23, 2015 - The Government is committed to extend the immunisation programme to the last child of the country said, Shri J.P. Nadda, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare. He was speaking on the occasion of launching of media campaign on Hepatitis-B in Mumbai today.
The Minister said that the humanity aspects of Shri Amitabh Bachchan has provided great push to Hepatitis-B awareness programme. He further said that for health issues, support of the society and very important and Shri Amitabh Bachchan’s contribution ahs added power to this campaign.
He assured that government will provide all possible support, so that the goalof eradication of Hepatitis-B would be achieved. He further said that Hepatitis-B vaccination would be made part of the ambitious Indradhanush programme and in the couple of years 65 to 90% coverage would be achieved.
The drive will aim to create awareness about Hepatitis-B and its vaccine through uninhibited confessions led by UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Ambassador, Amitabh Bachchan.
In India, approximately 10 lakh children, on an annual basis, run the lifetime risk of developing chronic Hepatitis infections, leading to life-threatening issues including liver cancer, liver failure and a possibility of premature death. Despite continuous efforts, only 65% children in India had access to all vaccines during the first year of their life. Today, Routine Immunization (RI) in India targets 27 million infants and 30 million expecting mothers, saving 300,000 million lives each year.
Commenting on this association , Amitabh Bachchan said, “Hepatitis B is a very real issue in our country. It can be present in our blood streams for years and go undetected, only to strike with a vengeance when you least expect it. I have battled Hepatitis B following a bad blood transfusion; it has highlighted to me how a small oversight during growing up years can prove to be detrimental to not only one’s own life but also others. Immunization against Hepatitis B is a very personal issue for me, and I am very happy to associate with Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and UNICEF India to narrate my story to the Indian population to create awareness about this cause.”
Adding further, Louis Georges Arsenault, UNICEF India Representative said, “Preventing Hepatitis-B through immunisation at birth and the first year of life is critical for the healthy life of a child. If we could achieve the extraordinary feat of defeating polio, we can surely join hands and also prevent this life threatening disease through timely Routine Immunisation.”
The ‘Confessions from AB’ film is the first-leg of a national awareness drive which aims to highlight the benefits of Routine Immunization led by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The joint efforts of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and UNICEF India attempt to rid the nation of 7 life-threatening diseases (Diphtheria, Whooping Cough, Tetanus, Polio, Tuberculosis, Measles and Hepatitis-B).
Dr. Deepak Sawant, Maharashtra Health Minister, Mr. Louis Georges Arsenault, UNICEF representative of India, Prof. Ram Shinde, Minister of State for Health (Maharashtra), Mr. C.K. Mishra, Additional Director, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Dr. Jayant Barve, Clinical and Interventional Gastroenterologist were also present on this occasion.
