Armand J. R. Vaillancourt is a Québécois sculptor, painter and performance artist born on September 3, 1929, in the city of Black Lake, Quebec, Canada, which is now a part of the city of Thetford Mines. He received his art training at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal.
In 1971, a publicly commissioned fountain entitled Vaillancourt Fountain, often called "Québec libre!" was installed in San Francisco, United States. One of his best known sculptures, Québec libre! is representative of the relationship between Vaillancourt's art and his political convictions. It is a huge concrete fountain, 200 feet long, 140 feet wide and 36 feet high sitting near the city's financial district at the Embarcadero Center. The night before its inauguration, Vaillancourt inscribed Québec libre! in red letters, to note his support for the Quebec sovereignty movement and more largely, his support for the freedom of all people. The following day, seeing that the city's employees erased the inscription, he jumped on the sculpture during its dedication to reinscribe the phrase.

On Monday, August 10, work began on the new public work HOMMAGE À MICHEL CHARTRAND : LA FORCE OUVRIÈRE by Armand Vaillancourt, a monumental sculpture for the Parc Michel Chartrand in Longueuil, set for completion in October 2015. The colossal work is composed of 20 steel plates each weighing 24 tons, 32 feet in height, 4 feet 8 inches wide and 8 inches thick, resting on a base of reinforced concrete. The maquette of the final sculpture is currently on display at Arsenal Montréal among a selection of other works spanning Vaillancourt’s 60 year career. The artist has been a longtime supporter of various causes, primarily among them the Quebec labour movement. We visited him at his home/studio, where we dug around his archives comprising hundreds of notebooks, press clippings and other artef...

Perhaps his most memorable song from Canadian poet/songwriter & performer Leonard Cohen. Cohen specified, notably in a BBC interview, that the song was about encountering Suzanne Verdal, the then wife of sculptor Armand Vaillancourt, in a Montreal setting. Indeed, many lines describe different elements of the city, including its river (the Saint Lawrence) and a little chapel near the harbour, called Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours (literally Our Lady of Good Help), which sits on the side of the harbour that faces the rising sun in the morning, as it is described in the song. Suzanne Verdal was interviewed by CBC News's The National in 2006 about the song. Verdal claims that she and Cohen never had sexual relations, contrary to what some interpretations of the song suggest. Cohen himself stated...

NEIL DIAMOND CENTRAL WEBSITE - http://www.neildiamondcentral.com/ Suzanne's Story - https://youtu.be/MAXCIfR-flw "The song was begun, and the chord pattern was developed, before a woman's name entered the song. And I knew it was a song about Montreal, it seemed to come out of that landscape that I loved very much in Montreal, which was the harbor and the waterfront and the sailors' church there, called Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secour, which stood out over the river, and I knew that there're ships going by, I knew that there was a harbor, I knew that there was Our Lady of the Harbor, which was the virgin on the church which stretched out her arms towards the seamen, and you can climb up to the tower and look out over the river, so the song came from that vision, from that view of the river.
