The popular Rolex Daytona was introduced in 1960 and became even more popular after actor Paul Newman played Frank Capua in the 1969 racing film “Winning.” This lead to certain Daytona models being known as Paul Newman Daytonas. In this video review, I will introduce the popular Daytona chronograph watch from Rolex, and discuss the myriad of models available too see which one is more appropriate for you. Every serious collector should own a Rolex Daytona. It is an essential component of any serious high-end watch collection. Rolex Daytona Function – the Tachymeter on the Bezel An important feature of the Daytona and one that goes hand-in-hand with the chronograph function, is the use of the tachymeter on the bezel. Using the chronograph seconds hands hand, the tachymeter allows you to calculate the average speed over a given distance – which is essential to the sports like car racing. Case Material of the Daytona The Rolex Daytona comes in a variety of metal combinations, such as rose and yellow gold, white gold, and platinum. The watch also comes in two-tone varieties, as well as the more economical stainless steel version. Stainless Steel Daytona – Why is it Important? Rolex Daytonas made out of stainless steel are important because they represent one of the most versatile variations of the Daytona. The stainless steel model also makes the owning of a Daytona more economically feasible for certain collectors due to it having a lower price point. The stainless steel Daytona comes with either a white or black dial. Throughout my career in the luxury watch industry, I have owned both white dial and black dial Daytonas.
