International Transport Workers Federation ITF
The forum is being hosted by the Maritime Union of Australia (WA Branch) and the International Transport Workers’ Federation.
Mike Smith, Elected Official of the United Steelworkers’ Union Local 5 in Richmond California, has travelled to Perth to address the meeting in person.
Maritime Union Western Australian Branch Secretary Chris Cain said Western Australians needed to understand the risks as Chevron seeks to bring its Gorgon and Wheatstone LNG plants online over the next few years.
“Research undertaken by the University of Sydney has shown stuff-up after stuff-up during the construction phase on Gorgon, and the MUA is very concerned that this culture of mistakes will cross-over to the much more hazardous operational phase of the project,” Mr Cain said.
“In California a couple of years ago, we saw a disastrous fire at a Chevron plant, which saw 15,000 people sent to hospital. Only last week, there was another fire at the plant and it was very fortunate nobody was injured.
“We are very lucky to have Mayor McLaughlin and Mike Smith to be able to talk to us in Perth this week and discuss the challenges of dealing with a company like Chevron.”
Mr Cain said the forum was open to the public and media.
“We will welcome all members of the public and media to the forum, where members of the audience will be able to ask questions of our speakers and participate in the discussion.
“With Gorgon being built on a A-Class nature reserve, and Wheatstone being built close to onshore communities, it is vitally important that all Western Australians have an understanding of Chevron’s safety record.”
Produced by Shannon O'Keeffe Campaigns Director - International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF), Darrin Barnett National Communications / Campaigns Director - Maritime Union of Australia, Ashleigh Telford Communications Officer - Maritime Union of Australia and Jamie McMechan Film Unit - Maritime Union of Australia.

Chevron Corporation's global tax counsel Sandy Macfarlane has dismissed reports that a Delaware subsidiary paid $248 tax on an estimated $1.7 billion profit from Australian interest payments, telling the Senate tax inquiry that under US law none of the amount was taxable.
"It's a filing fee or something," Mr Macfarlane said.
"So the $248 is wrong because it's actually zero tax," Labor senator Sam Dastyari said.
Mr Macfarlane and Chevron Australia chief executive Roy Krzywosinski faced a torrid grilling by the Senate committee over a $269 million Federal Court judgment against Chevron last month. The case involved a US subsidiary which borrowed $US2.45 billion in 2003 at an average of less than 2 per cent interest, and on-lent the money to Chevron Australia at an average of 9 per cent interest.
Chevron managing director Roy Krzywosinski faced a torrid grilling by the Senate committee.
In a later session, Deputy Tax Commissioner Jeremy Hirschhorn said Chevron had acknowledged in its testimony that its current $36.5 billion ($51.4 billion) debt was a hybrid-debt structure which did not pay tax on its interest profits in Australia or the US.
"As you heard today, both the old arrangement and the new arrangements are effectively hybrid arrangements," Mr Hirschhorn said.
The OECD's Base Erosion Profit Shifting project specifically targeted hybrid-debt structures which paid no tax on transactions in any country, he said.
Mr Hirschhorn said foreign oil and gas companies were pushing the envelope in their funding structures, "in some cases pushing it too far".
Mr Macfarlane attacked reports in The Australian Financial Review relating to the $1.85 billion that Chevron Australia paid to its Delaware parent, Chevron Australia Petroleum Company, in interest payments on related-party debt as "completely mistaken".

America is a nation of DOERS. The hard working and the smart working, the all-in going all-out, with the kind of can-do work ethic that defines America.
DOERS build the dams and the railroads. They built the Golden Gates and the Empire States. Doin’ got this nation done.
DOERS are inventors and teachers and farmers and builders and moms and dads and scientists and librarians and bakers and coders and machinists and, well, anyone else who wakes in the morning ready to get doin’.

Reax as court orders probe of Chevron-YPF deal on shale deposit

A federal appeals court in Argentina on Wednesday ordered a criminal investigation into the approval of a billion-dollar deal with US-based Chevron Corporation to produce oil and gas by hydraulic fracturing in the world's third-largest shale deposit.
Argentine President Cristina Fernandez is accused of abusing her power and harming the environment by issuing a decree last year that facilitated the deal.
Chevron announced its first substantial investment in Argentina's Vaca Muerta shale deposit the day after Fernandez lowered currency and tax restrictions on investors that spend at least one (b) billion US dollars in the oil sector.
Alejandro Bodart, a member of parliament from the United Left party, one of the appellants in the case, said the deal did not coincide with the country's reality.

We've done extensive air testing on-shore and off-shore, all of our air testing indicates that there are no pollutants from that fire that are of any concern to people on shore. As a matter of fact I'll point out that the people in closest proximity to the fire today are the workers that we have on platforms close to the actual incident."

STORYLINE:
Local communities in the vicinity of a continuing natural gas fire off the coast of Nigeria have been reassured that the blaze and initial leak pose no threat to their health.
Lloyd Avram, the spokesman for Chevron Nigeria Limited, who were extracting natural gas at the site of the fire promised on Wednesday that there is no risk to health and that nearby beaches have not been polluted.
Locals have complained about rashes, breathing difficulty and gastrointestinal problems since the fire began.
Chevron has said its own tests have found no air pollution from the blaze, though it acknowledges some fish have been killed from the fire.
Fishing is for many in the surrounding communities a way to earn a living.
Speaking to the Associated Press Avram stated that "all of our air testing indicates that there are no pollutants from that fire that are of any concern to people on shore."
He promised: "the beaches locally are clean, the water is clean in that area."
On Monday Nigeria's President, Goodluck Jonathan, attempted to calm anger in villages near the Chevron Corp. offshore natural gas rig that has been engulfed in a raging fire for weeks.
As yet no official has said when the inferno might be extinguished although Avram said efforts were continuing.
"Approximately 2,000 feet from that well site you'll see a platform that's drilling a relief well for our effort to try to and contain the fire and put the fire out permanently."
Koluama 2, a village along the Atlantic Ocean in Bayelsa state, awoke on January 16 to a series of explosions from Chevron's KS Endeavor natural gas rig, which sits only 10 kilometres (6 miles) from shore.
Two workers died in the blast, who officials on Monday identified as nationals of India and France.
In the time since, the raging fire from an unstopped natural gas leak at the site has softened the steel of the rig, causing it to collapse into the ocean.
The fire can be seen clearly off the white sand beach at Koluama 2, as can the additional rig put in place to try and drill a relief well to stop the fire.

Amy Goodman (born April 13, 1957) is an American broadcast journalist, syndicated columnist, investigative reporter and author. Goodman's investigative journalism career includes coverage of the East Timor independence movement and Chevron Corporation's role in Nigeria. Since 1996, Goodman has hosted Democracy Now!, an independent global news program broadcast daily on radio, television and the Internet. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Thomas Merton Award in 2004, a Right Livelihood Award in 2008, and an Izzy Award in 2009 for "special achievement in independent media". In 2012, Goodman received the Gandhi Peace Award for a "significant contribution to the promotion of an enduring international peace". Goodman is the author of five books, including the 2012 The Silenced Majority: Stories of Uprisings, Occupations, Resistance, and Hope.
In 1991, covering the East Timor independence movement, Goodman and fellow journalist Allan Nairn reported that they were badly beaten by Indonesian soldiers after witnessing a mass killing of Timorese demonstrators in what became known as the Santa Cruz Massacre.[9]
In 1998, Goodman and journalist Jeremy Scahill documented Chevron Corporation's role in a confrontation between the Nigerian Army and villagers who had seized oil rigs and other equipment belonging to oil corporations. Two villagers were shot and killed during the standoff.[10] On May 28, 1998, the company provided helicopter transport to the Nigerian Navy and Mobile Police (MOPOL) to their Parabe oil platform which had been occupied by villagers who accused the company of contaminating their land. Soon after landing, the Nigerian military shot and killed two of the protesters, Jola Ogungbeje and Aroleka Irowaninu, and wounded 11 others. Chevron spokesperson Sola Omole acknowledged that the company transported the troops, and that use of troops was at the request of Chevron's management. The documentary, "Drilling and Killing: Chevron and Nigeria's Oil Dictatorship", won the George Polk Award in 1998.
Michael Delli Carpini, dean of the Annenberg School for Communication, said, "She's not an editorialist. She sticks to the facts... She provides points of view that make you think, and she comes at it by saying: 'Who are we not hearing from in the traditional media?'"
Goodman had been news director of Pacifica Radio station WBAI in New York City for over a decade when she co-founded Democracy Now! The War and Peace Report in 1996. Since then, Democracy Now! has been called "probably the most significant progressive news institution that has come around in some time" by professor and media critic Robert McChesney.[12]
In 2001, the show was temporarily pulled off the air, as a result of a conflict with a group of Pacifica Radio board members and Pacifica staff members and listeners. During that time, it moved to a converted firehouse from which it broadcast until November 13, 2009.[13] Democracy Now! subsequently moved to a studio located in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan.[14]
Goodman credits the program's success to the mainstream media organizations who leave "a huge niche" for Democracy Now![12]
When President Bill Clinton called WBAI on Election Day 2000[15] for a quick get-out-the-vote message, Goodman and WBAI's Gonzalo Aburto challenged him for 28 minutes with questions about Leonard Peltier, racial profiling, the Iraq sanctions, Ralph Nader, the death penalty, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the normalization of relations with Cuba, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Clinton defended his administration's policies and charged Goodman with being "hostile and combative".
Goodman has received dozens[31] of awards for her work, including the Robert F. Kennedy Prize for International Reporting (1993, with Allan Nairn)[32] and the George Polk Award (1998, with Jeremy Scahill).[33] In 1999, she declined to accept the Overseas Press Club Award, in protest of the group's pledge not to ask questions of keynote speaker Ambassador Richard Holbrooke and because the OPC was honoring Indonesia for their improved treatment of journalists despite the fact that its forces had recently beaten and killed reporters in occupied East Timor.[34]
On October 2, 2004, Goodman was presented the Islamic Community Award for Journalism by the Council on American-Islamic Relations.[35] On November 18, 2004, she was presented the Thomas Merton Award.[36] In 2006 she received the Puffin/Nation Prize for Creative Citizenship.

Creating Shared Value in the Extractives Industry
Friday, Mar 13, 2015
Please join us for an expert panel to launch FSG's new report Extracting with Purpose: Creating Shared Value in the Oil and Gas and Mining Sectors' Companies and Communities. The extractives sectors can be invaluable in facilitating economic and social development around the world, yet close to 80 percent of countries whose economies depend on extractives industries have per-capita income levels that fall below the global average.
This new paper focuses on how private-sector stakeholders can best promote shared value and seize opportunities in the developed and developing world. Shared value, or policies and activities that measurably improve socio-economic outcomes and improve related core business performance, helps businesses frame potential opportunities to address societal issues and to deliver real business value as well as community development.

Terrorism and Dissent: Amy Goodman & Phil Donahue (2005)

Phillip John "Phil" Donahue (born December 21, 1935) is an American media personality, writer, and film producer best known as the creator and host of The Phil Donahue Show. The television program, also known as Donahue, was the first talk show format that included audience participation.[2] The show had a 29-year run on national television in America that began in Dayton, Ohio, and ended in New York City in 1996.
His shows have often focused on issues that divide liberals and conservatives in the United States, such as abortion, consumer protection, civil rights and war issues. His most frequent guest was Ralph Nader, for whom Donahue campaigned in 2000.[1] Donahue also briefly hosted a talk show on MSNBC from July 2002 to March 2003. In 1996, Donahue was ranked #42 on TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time.[3]
Oprah Winfrey said "if it weren't for Phil Donahue, there never would have been an Oprah Show!"
In July 2002, Phil Donahue returned to television after seven years of retirement to host a show called Donahue on MSNBC. On February 25, 2003, MSNBC canceled the show, citing his opposition to the imminent invasion of Iraq by the United States military. Donahue was the highest rated show on MSNBC at the time it was canceled, managing to beat Chris Matthews' MSNBC show Hardball in the ratings.[18] But Matthews was a big proponent of the Iraq invasion and he cultivated a good relationship with MSNBC's management before Donahue came to the network. He played a crucial role in procuring the firing of Donahue and "saw himself as MSNBC's biggest star, and he was upset that the network was pumping significant resources into Donahue's show."[19] In the fall of 2002, U.S. News & World Report ran a gossip item that had Matthews saying over lunch in Washington that if Donahue stays on the air, he could bring down the network.
Soon after the show's cancellation, an internal MSNBC memo was leaked to the press stating that Donahue should be fired because he opposed the imminent U.S. invasion of Iraq and that he would be a "difficult public face for NBC in a time of war."[20] Donahue commented in 2007 that the management of MSNBC, owned by General Electric and Microsoft, required that "we have two conservative (guests) for every liberal. I was counted as two liberals."[21]
Donahue continued to oppose the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq after MSNBC fired him. He participated in public marches and rallies against the occupation and even debated Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly, who strongly supported the war.[22] During his 2005 appearance on O'Reilly's show, he told O'Reilly, "In the last year, two things have doubled. The number of dead American troops in Iraq has doubled from over a thousand to almost two thousand. You know what also doubled, Billy? The price of Halliburton stock—from thirty-three to sixty-six dollars. That doesn't shame you? That doesn't make you wonder whether this is an enterprise that is worth the support of the American people?" (Halliburton Company, through its subsidiary KBR, received billions of dollars in government contracts to help manage the military's occupation of Iraq.)[23] Donahue continued, "There is no democracy without dissent."
In 2006, Donahue served as co-director with independent filmmaker Ellen Spiro for the feature documentary film Body of War. The film tells the story of Tomas Young, a severely disabled Iraq War veteran and his turbulent postwar adjustments. In November 2007 the film was named as one of fifteen documentaries to be in consideration for an Oscar nomination from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
