Virginia's new Governor Bob McDonnell, is officially on the job.
Around 4 thousand people witnessed the first Inauguration in Richmond in 8 years. The 71st governor enjoyed a packed crowd and perfect weather as he took on the oath of office.
Each aspect of this event was carefully planned and executed. But planning an Inauguration and running a state are two different things and McDonnell acknowledged that there are tough times ahead.
"Competition for jobs is intense among the states, and between nations," said the new Governor during his inaugural address. "States are aggressively positioning themselves to best appeal to job creators and entrepreneurs"
But instead of making excuses, McDonnell pointed to his legendary predecessors. Men like Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry, who had issues of their own to deal with.
"New opportunity helped them meet the challenges of their time," he said. "Greater opportunity will help us meet the challenges of ours.
And McDonnell was all smiles as he celebrated being sworn in. But his campaign and his speech today showed that he has some big goals and he is going to have to get to work right away in order to accomplish them."
"Where opportunity is absent, we must create it. Where opportunity is limited, we must expand it. Where opportunity is unequal, we must make it open to everyone."
Fostering that opportunity is what this new governor hopes will be the trademark of his administration.

Robert Francis "Bob" McDonnell (born June 15, 1954) is an American politician who has been the 71st Governor of Virginia since January 16, 2010. A former lieutenant colonel in the United States Army, McDonnell served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1993 to 2006 and served as Attorney General of Virginia from 2006 to 2009. He currently serves as chairman of the Republican Governors Association.
McDonnell was elected as the Governor of Virginia on the back of the campaign slogan, "Bob's for Jobs", defeating Democratic state Senator Creigh Deeds by a 17-point margin in a 2009 general election marked by the late-2000s recession. McDonnell was inaugurated on January 16, 2010, on the steps of the Virginia State Capitol to succeed Tim Kaine.
Since taking office, McDonnell has pushed for privatization, extending a contract to outsource the state's computer operations and attempting to auction off the state's ABC liquor stores, and promoted offshore drilling for Virginia. He has sought to fund transportation improvements from non-traditional revenues sources including the proposal to auction-off liquor stores and establishing a toll booth at the Virginia-North Carolina border. He has used his amendatory veto power to restrict state funding for abortions.

Rachel Anne Maddow (pronounced /ˈmædoʊ/; born April 1, 1973) is an American television host, political commentator, and author. Maddow hosts a nightly television show, The Rachel Maddow Show, on MSNBC. Her syndicated talk radio program of the same name aired on Air America Radio. Maddow is the first openly gay anchor of a prime-time news program in the United States.
Asked about her political views by the Valley Advocate, Maddow replied, "I'm undoubtedly a liberal, which means that I'm in almost total agreement with the Eisenhower-era Republican party platform."
Maddow was born in Castro Valley, California. Her father, Robert B. "Bob" Maddow, is a former United States Air Force captain who resigned his commission the year before her birth and found civilian work as a lawyer for the East Bay Municipal Utility District. Her mother, Elaine Maddow (née Gosse), is a school program administrator from Newfoundland, Canada. She has one older brother, David. Her father is of Russian and Dutch descent and her mother is of English and Irish ancestry. Maddow's mother was raised a strict Roman Catholic, and Maddow herself grew up in a community that her mother has described as "very conservative." Maddow was a competitive athlete and played three sports in high school. Referencing John Hughes films, she describes herself in high school as "a cross between the jock and the antisocial girl."

Below are excerpts from tonights Republican Address to the Nation, to be delivered by Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell following President Obamas State of the Union Address: JOBS: Good government policy should spur economic growth, and strengthen the private sectors ability to create new jobs. We must enact policies that promote entrepreneurship and innovation, so America can better compete with the world. What government should not do is pile on more taxation, regulation, and litigation that kill jobs and hurt the middle class. SPENDING: The amount of this debt is on pace to double in five years, and triple in ten. The federal debt is already over $100,000 per household. This is simply unsustainable. The President's partial freeze on discretionary spending is a laudable step, but a small one. The circumstances of our time demand that we reconsider and restore the proper, limited role of government at every level. HEALTHCARE: All Americans agree, we need a health care system that is affordable, accessible, and high quality. But most Americans do not want to turn over the best medical care system in the world to the federal government. ENERGY: Advances in technology can unleash more natural gas, nuclear, wind, coal, and alternative energy to lower your utility bills. Here in Virginia, we have the opportunity to be the first state on the East Coast to explore for and produce oil and natural gas offshore. EDUCATION: The President and I agree on expanding the number of high-quality charter schools, and rewarding teachers for excellent performance. More school choices for parents and students mean more accountability and greater achievement. A child's educational opportunity should be determined by her intellect and work ethic, not by her zip code. NATIONAL DEFENSE: We applaud President Obama's decision to deploy 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan. We agree that victory there is a national security imperative. But we have serious concerns over recent steps the Administration has taken regarding suspected terrorists. THE ROLE OF GOVERNMENT: Here at home government must help foster a society in which all our people can use their God-given talents in liberty to pursue the American Dream. Republicans know that government cannot guarantee individual outcomes, but we strongly believe that it must guarantee equality of opportunity for all. That opportunity exists best in a democracy which promotes free enterprise, economic growth, strong families, and individual achievement. OUR SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT: Top-down one-size fits all decision making should not replace the personal choices of free people in a free market, nor undermine the proper role of state and local governments in our system of federalism. As our Founders clearly stated, and we Governors understand, government closest to the people governs best.

Around 4 thousand people witnessed the first Inauguration in Richmond in 8 years. The 71st governor enjoyed a packed crowd and perfect weather as he took on the oath of office.
Each aspect of this event was carefully planned and executed. But planning an Inauguration and running a state are two different things and McDonnell acknowledged that there are tough times ahead.
"Competition for jobs is intense among the states, and between nations," said the new Governor during his inaugural address. "States are aggressively positioning themselves to best appeal to job creators and entrepreneurs"
But instead of making excuses, McDonnell pointed to his legendary predecessors. Men like Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry, who had issues of their own to deal with.
"New opportunity helped them meet the challenges of their time," he said. "Greater opportunity will help us meet the challenges of ours.
And McDonnell was all smiles as he celebrated being sworn in. But his campaign and his speech today showed that he has some big goals and he is going to have to get to work right away in order to accomplish them."
"Where opportunity is absent, we must create it. Where opportunity is limited, we must expand it. Where opportunity is unequal, we must make it open to everyone."
Fostering that opportunity is what this new governor hopes will be the trademark of his administration.

JOBS: Good government policy should spur economic growth, and strengthen the private sectors ability to create new jobs. We must enact policies that promote entrepreneurship and innovation, so America can better compete with the world. What government should not do is pile on more taxation, regulation, and litigation that kill jobs and hurt the middle class.
SPENDING: The amount of this debt is on pace to double in five years, and triple in ten. The federal debt is already over $100,000 per household. This is simply unsustainable. The President's partial freeze on discretionary spending is a laudable step, but a small one. The circumstances of our time demand that we reconsider and restore the proper, limited role of government at every level.
HEALTHCARE: All Americans agree, we need a health care system that is affordable, accessible, and high quality. But most Americans do not want to turn over the best medical care system in the world to the federal government.
ENERGY: Advances in technology can unleash more natural gas, nuclear, wind, coal, and alternative energy to lower your utility bills. Here in Virginia, we have the opportunity to be the first state on the East Coast to explore for and produce oil and natural gas offshore.
EDUCATION: The President and I agree on expanding the number of high-quality charter schools, and rewarding teachers for excellent performance. More school choices for parents and students mean more accountability and greater achievement. A child's educational opportunity should be determined by her intellect and work ethic, not by her zip code.
NATIONAL DEFENSE: We applaud President Obama's decision to deploy 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan. We agree that victory there is a national security imperative. But we have serious concerns over recent steps the Administration has taken regarding suspected terrorists.
THE ROLE OF GOVERNMENT: Here at home government must help foster a society in which all our people can use their God-given talents in liberty to pursue the American Dream. Republicans know that government cannot guarantee individual outcomes, but we strongly believe that it must guarantee equality of opportunity for all. That opportunity exists best in a democracy which promotes free enterprise, economic growth, strong families, and individual achievement.
OUR SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT: Top-down one-size fits all decision making should not replace the personal choices of free people in a free market, nor undermine the proper role of state and local governments in our system of federalism. As our Founders clearly stated, and we Governors understand, government closest to the people governs best.

Former Virginia governor Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, were charged with improperly accepting gifts from a Virginia businessman by a federal grand jury on Tuesday.
The indictment accuses the McDonnells of accepting more than $135,000 in expensive clothing, trips and loans, among other items from Jonnie R. Williams Sr., CEO of Star Scientific, a maker of dietary supplements, in exchange for giving his business a leg up.
The once rising Republican star maintains he never treated Williams any differently than he would any other Virginia businessman.
Addressing reporters in Richmond on Tuesday, McDonnell said he did "nothing illegal" and vowed to "use every available resource and advocate... for as long as it takes to fight and prevail against these false allegations and the unjust overreach of the federal government."
"I believe the facts and the law are clearly on our side," McDonnell said, standing with his wife and two children. "We will face these false allegations with strength and firm resolve."
Soon after the details of McDonell's relationship with Williams surfaced last Spring he, despite maintaining his innocence throughout, announced he was returning all the gifts and loans from Mr. Williams. We wonder though, did he really return everything?

INTERVIEW: GOVERNOR BOB MCDONNELL - Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia -- discussed the Virginia surplus, whether he'll be veep, sequestration in Northern Virginia and Governor Romney's bus tour in Virginia.
Virginia posts $130M surplus at end of year. Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R) announced Monday that Virginia posted its third straight budget surplus, ending the fiscal year last month with $130 million.The surplus comes from an increase in revenues and transfers as well as savings in state government. Total revenue collections rose by 5.4 percent, ahead of the forecast of 4.5 percent. This marks the second straight year that revenue growth has exceeded 5 percent. The boost is attributed to growth in individual income tax receipts from payroll withholding, lower individual income tax refunds and higher than expected sales and corporate income tax collections.
Romney to make campaign stops in Virginia. Romney campaign officials confirmed Wednesday that Virginia would be part of the tour but would not provide any other details on the date or location of stops. But there are tentative plans to make stops in the Richmond area, Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads, according to CNN, which reported Wednesday that the four-day bus tour would kick off Aug. 10 with events in Virginia the following day. The tour also is expected to pass through North Carolina, Florida and potentially Ohio. The timing of the bus tour — just weeks ahead of the Republican National Convention in Tampa — has led some to speculate that it will come on the heels of Romney's vice presidential announcement. "Sure sounds like a VP rollout to me," said Larry Sabato, head of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia. "The timing is right, and you've got four key states."

McDonnell thought he was so clever that he could exploit loopholes in Virginia law to pocket $177,000 in luxury gifts and sweetheart loans without getting caught.

When that didn’t work, and corruption charges were brought, he thought he could talk his way out of trouble on the witness stand.
He was fooling himself. Neither the law’s gray areas nor his own eloquence swayed the jurors. They needed just over two days to convict him of 11 felonies and Maureen of nine.
“His happy life is over, whether or not he is exonerated on appeal,” Anne Coughlin, a University of Virginia criminal law professor, said. “A jury of his peers came back and said, ‘You are corrupt.’ That must really conflict with his image of who he is.”
I’d also like to believe that other politicians will learn from McDonnell’s downfall.
The jury’s quick and devastating verdict showed that the public doesn’t care much about legal nuances, such as what constitutes an “official act.”
The public just thinks, reasonably enough, that elected officials should not accept lavish personal gifts from people who want something in return.

Hunters from Outwest Farms located in Okeechobee, Florida have posted an image showing a massive, near 15-foot, 780 pound alligator they found and killed. According to CNN, the huge reptile was discovered on Saturday on one of the ponds located on a private ranch owned by Outwest Farms owner Lee Lightsey ...
