Obsessive healthy living was voted 'The Worst of Medicine' in a public debate hosted by Wellcome Collection on Thursday 17 July.
'The Best of Medicine' and 'The Worst of Medicine' were two free events designed to stimulate public debate about the best and worst ideas, phenomena, developments and practices in the history of medicine. There was also an online debate and discussion at ‘spiked’ where experts and the public could add their thoughts.
This event was preceded by ‘The Best of Medicine’ on 26 June.
In this video, Michael Fitzpatrick puts forward his case for obsessive healthy living being the worst development in medicine today.
Michael Fitzpatrick has been a full-time general practitioner in East London for more than 20 years. He has written on a range of medical and political subjects, including AIDS, addictions and health scares, for both medical journals and the mainstream media. His books 'The Tyranny of Health: Doctors and the regulation of lifestyle' and 'MMR and Autism: What parents need to know' are published by Routledge. His latest book, 'Defeating Autism: A damaging delusion' is due in the second half of 2008.

A plenary presentation from SPIE Medical Imaging 2015 - http://spie.org/MI
Target registration error, referred to as TRE, is a term and quantity familiar to those in the image registration and surgical guidance communities -- but that wasn't always the case, according to Michael Fitzpatrick of Vanderbilt University in this keynote address.
Intertwining the stories of the development of the surgical system with the research into TRE, he illustrates the pitfalls and progress in both industrial and academic settings. The historical review also demonstrates that setbacks and poor reviews by editors and funding agencies can ultimately be overcome through perseverance, dedication and a bit of luck.
This address is entertaining, but also sends an encouraging message to those researchers, particularly students, who are having troubles of their own. That message is that setbacks and criticism today do not mean that success won't come tomorrow.
J. Michael Fitzpatrick is professor emeritus of computer science, electrical engineering, radiology, and neurosurgery at Vanderbilt University, where he has served since 1982. He is a Fellow of the SPIE and of the IEEE, a co-editor of Volume Two of the Handbook of Medical Imaging, and was co-chair of the Image Processing Conference for four years. His research is focused primarily on predicting, reducing, and measuring error in medical image registration and surgical guidance.
