Tokyo (東京), Japan, is one of the world's greatest cities, and there's so much to do and see when you visit. From temples and shrines, to gardens and museums, you'll never run out of attractions. Out of all the things you could do, I've chosen a top 25 list for this awesome city (and just so you know food is my first choice in Tokyo)!
1. Ameya-Yokochō (アメヤ横丁) - A giant open air market that offers clothes, cosmetics, food, and restaurants and bars.
2. Meiji Shrine (明治神宮) - This Shinto shrine, surrounded by beautiful forest, is extremely significant.
3. Ryogoku Kokugikan (両国国技館) - Even if it's not fight season, you can go to the free sumo museum and eat sumo chankonabe.
4. Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden (新宿御苑) - The garden is a beautiful attraction in Tokyo, with French gardens, Japanese gardens, and a green house.
5. Ginza (銀座) / Yurakucho (有楽町) - Ginza is a great area of town for upscale shopping and dining, while Yurakucho is famous for Izakaya bars and restaurants under the railroad track.
6. Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (東京都庁舎) - There are a lot of things to do in Tokyo where you have to pay, but here, you can go to the 45th floor for free.
7. Tsukiji Market (築地市場) - One of the most famous attractions in all of Tokyo is the Tsukiji Market (築地市場), the biggest seafood market in the world.
8. Shibuya (渋谷区) - With the busiest intersection in the world, Shibuya (渋谷区) is also home to shopping and restaurant.
9. Sumida River (隅田川) - At Tokyo's Sumida River, you can either just walk around the park and enjoy the riverside views, or you can take the Tokyo Cruise in a boat.
10. Tokyo Imperial Palace (皇居) - This is the home of the emperor of Japan. To enter the grounds, you have to make a tour booking on the official website
11. Ueno Park (上野公園), Tokyo National Museum (東京国立博物館) - Ueno Park is a huge public park in Tokyo with shrines, gardens and a number of museums.
12. Tokyo Skytree (東京スカイツリー) - They call it Tokyo's biggest attractions. It's a huge communications tower with various viewing decks and galleries.
13. Harajuku (原宿), Takeshita Street (竹下通り) - Famous for its street market and cosplay that takes place, this is a place in the city to see and be seen.
14. Senso-ji (金龍山浅草寺) - Visiting this temple is one of the top things to do in Tokyo, frequented by both tourists and religious pilgrims. It's the oldest temple in Tokyo.
15. Edo-Tokyo Museum (江戸東京博物館) - It looks a little like a UFO, but it's one of Tokyo's main museums, that aims to preserve the history of the city.
16. Fine Dining - Let's just face it, Tokyo is one of the best cities in the world for high class dining - atmosphere, presentation, food, it's all just stunning!
17. Akihabara Electric Town (秋葉原電気街) - If you love electronics and gaming, you're going to love the area of Akihabara. You'll also find those infamous maid cafes here.
18. Tokyo Stock Exchange (東京証券取引所) - Another free attraction in Tokyo is to be a guest at the stock exchange where you can see the Japanese Nikkei being traded.
19. Roppongi (六本木) - Home to the Mori Art Museum and a hotspot for nightlife in the city, Roppongi is an exciting area of town.
20. Odaiba (お台場) - This area of Tokyo is full of things to do like Legoland, and Palette Town, an indoor amusement park. It's also known as Tokyo's entertainment island.
21. Yoyogi Park (代々木公園) - Located next to Meiji Shrine, and just a short distance from Harajuku and Shinjuku, this park is popular for exercise and dance.
22. Nezu (根津), Yanaka (谷中 (台東区) - Tokyo is a truly modern city, but there are a couple places like Nezu and Yanaka that have held strong to their traditional and cultural roots.
23. Onsen (温泉) - You've got to strip down naked before you can enter a Japanese public bath.
24. Mount Takao (高尾山) - Just 50 km from central Tokyo, this mountain is popular for climbing and is a sacred religious mountains. Makes a good day trip from Tokyo.
25. Food - Finally, food is the reason I visited Japan, and I think eating is by all means one of the best things to do in Tokyo. Food is everywhere, and not only does it taste amazing, but the care that goes into Japanese cuisine is incredible.
Thank you very much for watching this video that includes some of the best things to do in Tokyo. I hope it will give you inspiration to visit and eat through this amazing city.

Welcome to Tokyo, the capital of Japan and the epitome of the word “megacity.”
In this vast metropolis, ancient traditions blend with futuristic buildings, and your Tokyo sightseeing will take you to representations of each. Pay your respects at temples set in forested hillsides, then flex your credit card in one of the shopping districts, before sitting down to a five-star meal…all in one day.
Your Tokyo tour begins with the subway and train system, which will take you all over this sprawling city. Tokyo is home to some 35 million people, many of which you’ll meet as its public transit carries you throughout its many neighborhoods. Make a stop in Asakusa, a temple district nestled in leafy trees with skyscrapers towering in the background. There you’ll visit Nakamisi Dori, a street loaded with food vendors and religious charms. Get to know the city a little better in the Harajuku district, home to cutting-edge fashion, a thriving, youth-centered culture, and the famous Yoyogi Park. The park stands out in stern contrast to the rest of the neighborhood; this sprawling, 134-acre green space is where locals slow down after a frenzied week of work and play.
As night falls, make your way to Shinjuku. Many of Tokyo’s premier restaurants and pubs span Shinjuku’s streets, and you can indulge in succulent 5-star meals or sample with fast food from local vendors. Watch a movie, do some karaoke, and linger with fellow travelers and friendly locals alike.

I'm back home now, my mommy (the Debbie Machine) is here and she says hello to all of you, I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving surrounded by a family that loves you and annoys you to no end, or even a friendsgiving with people that care about you. I'm thankful for so much, and I'm feeling especially grateful for this trip to Tokyo because it really has changed my life. I learned so much about respect and kindness and have been truly inspired by everyone that I met there. Thank you thank you thank you so much for having me and I would gladly come back anytime. Thank you to everyone that came to meet me and to everyone that helped us from Google/youtube to make this a once in a lifetime opportunity, I had a blast, and thoroughly enjoyed every moment being in your country. wn.com/Oops I'm In Tokyo
Love you. Itarashemashe, ITARASHEMASHE!!!!! (probably spelled all wrong but this was what I said the whole trip to myself, it means like, welcome to the store and then I would yell at myself WELCOME TO THE STOREEEE!!!! I'm a fucking troll).

A real life capsule to sleep in. Cool!
This is one of the most "ONLY in JAPAN" experiences possible — staying in a capsule hotel in a Japanese city. It’s cheap and convenient but why do people actually stay here? Is it ... you know ... big enough?
In this episode, John Daub and Masahito Kawahata head to the Shinjuku Kuyakusho-mae Capsule Hotel in Kabukicho to find out.
Japan’s Capsule Hotels are more than cheap places to crash.
This type of hotel is distinctively Japanese in style, cramming in as much as possible into a tiny space to make a comfortable experience, but can a guest really be comfortable in one?
More and more foreign tourists to Japan want to give it a try! How small are these capsule? How much is a night? What are the rules?
Is it worth it?
Miss your last train?
Work too late?
Argument with your husband or wife and need a place to crash? Those might be the normal reasons why Japanese salarymen spend the night at a capsule hotel.
For foreign tourists it’s a chance to experience a unique style of hotel that seems more like spending a night at the morgue.
Before you pass judgement on capsule hotels, some things about them may surprise you!
What can you find at the capsule hotel?
Here’s a list:
Capsules
Lockers
Restaurant (Open 18:00~24:00)
Community Room
Vending machines
Laundry machines
Fast and free WIFI
English speaking staff
Women’s only floor
Japanese-style bath and sauna
Close to Shinjuku Station, bars, Golden Gai and Robot Restaurant

Tokyo
Tokyo, Japan is the original mega-city, a throbbing, dynamic metropolis of 32.5 million people, well over 50 percent more massive than the world's next largest metropolitan areas. With populations clustering around 20 million people, the metro regions of Seoul, Mexico City, New York and Mumbai are all less than two-thirds the magnitude of the Tokyo metro area.
Tokyo's ranking as the world's number one city goes well beyond the sheer scale of its population. Its lively Shibuya district is home to the world's busiest intersection, a vibrant pedestrian scramble which people traverse from every direction at the same time. Tokyo's famously bustling Tsukiji Market plays fishmonger to the world as the largest wholesale fish and seafood market on the planet.
Yet, despite its immense proportions, many worldly, well-traveled observers marvel at how well Tokyo functions. Tokyo's subway trains, packed to the gills during peak rush hour travel times, are known for arriving and departing with impressive precision. Moreover, the city manages to keep a comfortable handle on pollution, crime and other challenges that often accompany such immense urban environments.Tokyo officially Tokyo Metropolis (東京都 Tōkyō-to), is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan. Tokyo is the capital of Japan, the center of the Greater Tokyo Area, and the largest metropolitan area in the world. It is the seat of the Japanese government and the Imperial Palace, and the home of the Japanese Imperial Family. Tokyo is in the Kantō region on the southeastern side of the main island Honshu and includes the Izu Islands and Ogasawara Islands. Tokyo Metropolis was formed in 1943 from the merger of the former Tokyo Prefecture (東京府 Tōkyō-fu) and the city of Tokyo (東京市 Tōkyō-shi).
The Tokyo Metropolitan government administers the 23 special wards of Tokyo (each governed as a city), which cover the area that was the city of Tokyo, as well as 39 municipalities in the western part of the prefecture and the two outlying island chains. The population of the special wards is over 8 million people, with the total population of the prefecture exceeding 13 million. The prefecture is part of the world's most populous metropolitan area with upwards of 35 million people and the world's largest urban agglomeration economy with a GDP of US$1.479 trillion at purchasing power parity in 2008, ahead of New York City metropolitan area, which ranks second on the list. The city hosts 51 of the Fortune Global 500 companies, the highest number of any city.
Tokyo has been described as one of the three "command centers" for the world economy, along with New York City and London. The city is considered an alpha+ world city, listed by the GaWC's 2008 inventory[ and ranked fourth among global cities by A.T. Kearney's 2012 Global Cities Index. In 2012, Tokyo was named the most expensive city for expatriates, according to the Mercer and Economist Intelligence Unit cost-of-living surveys, and in 2009 named the third Most Liveable City and the World's Most Livable Megalopolis by the magazine Monocle. The Michelin Guide has awarded Tokyo by far the most Michelin stars of any city in the world. Tokyo hosted the 1964 Summer Olympics and is currently a candidate city for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

Visiting Tokyo's Izu Islands
Did you know that Tokyo has islands? Yes, the prefecture (province/state) of Tokyo has a volcanic chain of islands called the Izu Seven Islands group. We stayed at Shikinejima (Shikine-jima), which is a small island 3 km long by 2.5 km wide that is located 160 km south of the city of Tokyo. To get there, we took an overnight ferry, where we slept on a carpeted floor.

Japan earthquake and Tsunami 2011 - Shocking video
An erupting volcanic island that is expanding off Japan could trigger a tsunami if its freshly-formed lava slopes collapse into the sea, scientists say.
The small, but growing, island appeared last year and quickly engulfed the already-existing island of Nishinoshima, around 1000 kilometres south of Tokyo.
It now covers 1.26 square kilometres.

The island's craters are currently spewing out 200,000 cubic metres of lava every day - enough to fill 80 Olympic swimming pools - which is accumulating in its east, scientists said.
"If lava continues to mount on the eastern area, part of the island's slopes could collapse and cause a tsunami," warned Fukashi Maeno, assistant professor of the Earthquake Research Institute at the University of Tokyo.
He said a rockfall of 12 million cubic metres of lava would generate a one metre tsunami that could travel faster than a bullet train, hitting the island of Chichijima - 130kms away - in around 18 minutes, he said.
Chichijima, home to about 2000 people, is the largest island in the Ogasawara archipelago, a wild and remote chain that is administratively part of Tokyo.
"The ideal way to monitor and avoid a natural disaster is to set up a new tsunami and earthquake detection system near the island, but it's impossible for anyone to land on the island in the current situation," Maeno added.
An official from the Japan Meteorological Agency, which monitors earthquakes and tsunamis, said the agency is watching for any signs of anything untoward.
"We studied the simulation this morning, and we are thinking of consulting with earthquake prediction experts ... about the probability of this actually happening, and what kind of measures we would be able to take," he said.
Japan's northeast was ravaged by a huge tsunami in March 2011, when a massive undersea earthquake sent a wall of water barrelling into the northeast coast, killing more than 18,000 people and wrecking whole towns.

Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara said on Monday (April 16) that the Japanese capital is looking to buy a handful of disputed islands in the East China Sea claimed by both Japan and China.
The Japanese said several of the islands are owned privately by Japanese citizens and currently leased to the government.
The islands, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, is part of a wider pattern of maritime territorial disputes between China with neighbors both citing historical and other claims over fishing areas and potential rich hydrocarbon deposits.
Ishihara called China's claims "unbelievable", and that the Tokyo government will buy the islands.
Japan says the median line between the two countries' coasts should mark the boundary of their exclusive economic zones.
Japan includes the islands claimed by both countries as its own territory when measuring from its coasts.
At stake are natural gas fields in a 970-km (620-mile) trough -- called Xihu by China and Okinawa by Japan -- in the East China Sea.

STORYLINE:
A dozen people protested outside the Japanese consulate in Hong Kong on Thursday against attempts by a Japanese official to buy a group of disputed islands in the East China Sea.
Tokyo''s outspoken governor Shintaro Ishihara said earlier this week that the city is close to reaching an agreement with the private Japanese owner of three of the four islands in the group known as Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese.
The islands, surrounded by rich fishing grounds, are also claimed by China and Taiwan. They have been a frequent flash point in diplomatic relations between Japan and China.
A collision between a Chinese fishing boat and Japanese coast guard vessels in 2010 near the islands set off a serious diplomatic spat, with Beijing temporarily freezing trade and ministerial talks.
In Hong Kong on Thursday, protesters chanted "Japan get out of the Diaoyu islands, the Diaoyu islands are Chinese territories" and burned Japanese military flags to show their discontent.
They also handed a petition letter to a member of the Japanese consulate.
Lew Mon-hung, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People''s Political Consultative Conference, described any attempt to buy the islands as "invalid and illegal".
Ishihara, a strong nationalist, said the idea is to block China from taking the islands from Japanese control, as the central government is reluctant to upset China.
He did not indicate how much the city would pay, but said the deal would be finalised while he is visiting the United States.

TOKYO GOVERNOR DEFENDS DECISION TO BUY DISPUTED ISLANDS

...
Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara defended his moves to buy the Senkaku islands, also claimed by China and Taiwan, as a measure to protect Japan's sovereignty.
At a speech in Tokyo on Tuesday, Ishihara compared China to a burglar stealing from a house.
"In order to destroy Japan's effective control, they said they will take bolder actions such as preparing equipment including naval vessels. That's what they declared," Ishihara said.
"In other words, they declared they will commit burglary in another man's house," he added.
The fourth-term governor of Tokyo has been known to make provocative statements criticising China.
Ishihara made headlines last month when he said Tokyo is ready to buy the Senkaku islands, and that the city is already in negotiations with the land owner.
He admits the move may not be one that's conventional, but said it was necessary since the Japanese government has not been assertive in claiming Japan's rights in the international community.
"If we don't watch out, eventually Japan might become the sixth star on China's five-star flag. We might end up having a small rising sun as the sixth star. I wouldn't like that at all."
The disputed Senkaku, or Diaoyu, chain in the East China Sea are surrounded by rich fishing grounds as well as undersea resources, and have been a flashpoint in diplomatic relations.
Collisions near the islands in September 2010 between Japan Coast Guard patrol boats and a Chinese fishing vessel caused bilateral ties to plummet to their lowest point in years.

So now you are in Tokyo and you don't want to spend the day going from a place to another in a dark subway, right?
So here there is my recommendation, an awesome tour of 5 of the best places in Tokyo, all at a walking distance!
Obviously there are more than 5 things to do in Tokyo and each person has their own favorite places to visit. That being said, if you are a first timer in Japan, I recommend you spend half a day to do this tour. SERIOUSLY. Do this and you'll save a lot of time. Unless you want to see Sumo or the fish market, but if you are around my age, you will love this tour. You see the beautiful Japanese Meiji Shrine, see the crazy young Takeshitadori, the cool&hip; Harajuku Cat Street, get lost in Shibuya crossing, walk through the insane Center Street in Shibuya, and check out a really cool shop in Shibuya called LOFT for some shopping. Not to mention one of the best beers/ales in Tokyo and tons of shops on the way.

Tokyo, a city of 30 million, is a place where traditions and modern inventions live together. From the Tokyo Tower one can see only skyscrapers, palaces made of concrete and glass, multi-level highway junctions and monorail expresses. But under the neon lights there are still rickshaw runners pulling their carts and geishas walking in their wooden shoes. The ornamented pagodas, the Japanese gardens, the calm Shintoist sanctuaries tell us about the age of shoguns and ninjas. The digital cameras and the swords of the samurais can be found at the same store. In the restaurants one can have sushi, sukiyaki and tempura sitting on a tatami, using chopsticks. We can take a look at the masterpieces of ikebana and origami and the pictures painted on rice paper. The travelers can take a trip to the ancient city of Kyoto, to the giant Buddha of Kamakura, to the warm springs and to the Sacred Mountain, Fujiyama, where the cherry trees are blossoming at the foot of the hills.
