Galina Vecherkovskaya - 90-year-old rowing champion
Galina Yanovna Vecherkovskaya (also Putyrskaya, Russian: Галина Яновна Вечерковская (Путырская), born 27 June 1926) is a retired Russian rower who won five European titles between 1955 and 1962.
Vecherkovskaya was born in Leningrad, but during World War II her family lived in Ryazan Oblast. Her father, Jan Kazimirovich, was an engineer who was executed during the Stalin's purges in late 1930s. Vecherkovskaya started training in rowing in 1947, when she enrolled to the Lesgaft Institute of Physical Education (GDOIFK). She graduated in 1951 and until 1984 lectured at GDOIFK; after that, between 1984 and 1997 she worked as a physician at a city hospital for children. Around 1948 Vecherkovskaya married her coach, Kiril Putyrski, and for some time competed under his name as Galina Putyrskaya; they divorced around 1960.
Before the 1955 European Championships, Vecherkovskaya and her partner Mikhailova were medal favorites in double sculls. However, two rowers of the Soviet coxed four became pregnant, and to save the team Vecherkovskaya and Mikhailova were merged into the coxed four that resulted in a gold medal.

Ryazan (Russian: Ряза́нь; IPA: [rʲɪˈzanʲ]) is a city and the administrative center of Ryazan Oblast, Russia. It is located on the Oka River 196 kilometers (122 mi) southeast of Moscow. Population: 525,062 (2010 Census preliminary results); 521,560 (2002 Census); 514,638 (1989 Census).
It is argued that the Ryazan kremlin was founded in 800, by Slavic settlers,[citation needed] as a part of their drive into territory previously populated by Finnic peoples.[citation needed] Initially it was built of wood, gradually replaced by masonry. The oldest preserved part of the kremlin dates back to the 12th century.
However, the first written mention of the city, under the name of Pereslavl, dates to 1095. At that time the city was part of the independent Principality of Ryazan, which had existed since 1078 and which was centered on the old city of Ryazan. The first ruler of Ryazan was supposedly Yaroslav Sviatoslavich, Prince of Ryazan and Murom (cities of Kievan Rus').
The lands of Ryazan, situated on the border of forest and steppe, suffered numerous invasions from the south as well as from the north, carried out by a variety of military forces including Cumans, but particularly the Principality was in a conflict with Vladimir-Suzdal. By the end of the 12th century, the capital of Duchy was burnt several times by the armies of Suzdal. Ryazan was the first Russian city to be sacked by the Mongol horde of Batu Khan. On December 21, 1237, it was thoroughly devastated and never fully recovered. As result of the sack, the seat of the principality was moved about 55 kilometers (34 mi) to the town of Pereslavl-Ryazansky, which subsequently took the name of the destroyed capital. The site of the old capital now carries the name of Staraya Ryazan (Old Ryazan), close to Spassk-Ryazansky.

Ryazan Oblast (Russian: Ряза́нская о́бласть, Ryazanskaya oblast) is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast). Its administrative center is the city of Ryazan, which is the oblast's largest city. Population: 1,154,114 (2010 Census).
Ryazan Oblast borders Vladimir Oblast (N), Nizhny Novgorod Oblast (NE), the Republic of Mordovia (E), Penza Oblast (SE), Tambov Oblast (S), Lipetsk Oblast (SW), Tula Oblast (W), and Moscow Oblast (NW). Ryazan Oblastis located in the central part of the Russian Plain between the Central Russian and Volga uplands. The terrain is flat, with a highest point of no more 300 m above sea level. Soils are podzolic and boggy on the left bank of the Oka, changing southward to more fertile podzolic and leached black earths (Chernozyom).
As early as 1096, Ryazan had the status of a country, but the name of its capital appears only in the Nikonov chronicle. The first Olgovsky Uspensky Monastery, one of the oldest in Russia, was built in Ryazan land in the 12th century. A new round of history began in 1198, when the Murom-Ryazan principality left the jurisdiction of the Chernigov bishopric (eparchy) and became an independent eparchy with its seat in Ryazan.

Before the 1955 European Championships, Vecherkovskaya and her partner Mikhailova were medal favorites in double sculls. However, two rowers of the Soviet coxed four became pregnant, and to save the team Vecherkovskaya and Mikhailova were merged into the coxed four that resulted in a gold medal.

Her father, Jan Kazimirovich, was an engineer who was executed during the Stalin's purges in late 1930s. Vecherkovskaya started training in rowing in 1947, when she enrolled to the Lesgaft Institute of Physical Education (GDOIFK). She graduated in 1951 and until 1984 lectured at GDOIFK; after that, between 1984 and 1997 she worked as a physician at a city hospital for children. Around 1948 Vecherkovskaya married her coach, Kiril Putyrski, and for some time competed under his name as Galina Putyrskaya; they divorced around 1960.
Before the 1955 European Championships, Vecherkovskaya and her partner Mikhailova were medal favorites in double sculls. However, two rowers of the Soviet coxed four became pregnant, and to save the team Vecherkovskaya and Mikhailova were merged into the coxed four that resulted in a gold medal.

Rusky Ed here and in this lesson we will be taking a look at the Central Federal District. More on that following the intro song, but until then be sure to check out the focus words.
Although it’s called the Central Federal District (or Центра́льный федера́льный о́круг
in Russian), it’s actually located pretty much in the western portion of Russia. In fact, federal subjects which are considered to be part of the Central Federal District share borders with Belarus (Беларусь) and Ukraine (Украина). Altogether there are eighteen federal subjects which comprise the Central Federal District and they are as follows:
Tver Oblast
Smolensk Oblast
Moscow Oblast
Yaroslavl Oblast
Bryansk Oblast
Kaluga Oblast
Moscow
Vladimir Oblast
Ivanovo Oblast
Kostroma Oblast
Kursk Oblast

That’s a lot of federal subjects to keep track of and so it’s convenient that they are grouped into one district. Also of special interest, it should be pointed out that there are two separate federal subjects called Moscow (Москва) and Moscow Oblast (Московская область) and Moscow is surrounded by the Moscow Oblast.
Moving along we have the following vocabulary words for this lesson:
местность - terrain, area, region, ground
равнинный- flat
зрение- sight, vision
дамба - dam, dike, levee
русло - riverbed, channel, course, direction
основной - basic, primary, fundamental, main
The sample sentences for these words are as follows:
В области видимости местность была равнинной.
В поле зрения местность была равнинной.
В поле зрения ландшафт был равнинным.
(The terrain was flat as far as the eye could see.)
Вдоль русла реки есть две основные дамбы.
На реке есть две основные дамбы.
(There are two major dams along the course of the river.)
Often in life we must deal with nonsense which can be annoying and which can sometimes provoke us to be sarcastic. It is with this thought in mind that we will deal with the following review words:
обнаружить - detect, spot, discover
распознать - recognize, discern
сарказм - sarcasm
сытый - satisfied, full, satiated
горло - throat
ерунда - nonsense, rubbish
And now for a few sample sentences:
Сарказм часто трудно обнаружить.
(Sarcasm is often difficult to detect.)
Сарказм иногда трудно распознать.
(Sarcasm is sometimes hard to recognize.)
Я сыт по горло этой ерундой.
(I’m fed up with this nonsense.)
Literally “сыт по горло” means full to the throat, but it is used in a way which makes it equivalent to “fed up with” in English.
Other phrases with similar meaning include:
Меня это достало. (I’m sick of it.)
Мне это уже осточертело. (I’m sick of it already.)
Мне надоело это хуже горькой редьки. (I’m sick of it worse than bitter radish.)
Although достать can have a range of meanings, colloquially it means something like to be annoyed. Interestingly, осточертело is derived from сто which means one-hundred and чертей which means devils. And finally the idiom regarding the bitter radish is widely used in Russia. Vladimir Putin has even used the idiom in speeches, for instance.

Russian director Yuri Dushin joined Donetsk residents and Novorossiyan militia members in laying down a capsule containing soil from the Russian town of Skopin, Biryuzov's home town in Ryazan Oblast.
Biryuzov was the chief of staff of several units during the liberation of the Ukrainian SSR and Crimea from Nazi forces during WWII, including the 2nd Guards Army, which he commanded during fighting in the Eastern Front.
He was awarded the title Marshal of the Soviet Union in 1955, before being named Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR in 1964. He died in 1964, when the Ilyushin Il-18 he and around 30 others were travelling in crashed on Avala, the mountain overlooking Belgrade.
During the event, Dushin told press that "Russia always created and built and always was the stronghold of peace."

Having grown up in Austria, I had never made it to the Czech Republic, one of our neighbouring countries. Prague, in particular, had interested me for a long time, but I had never had a chance to visit it. Well, on June 1, finally, I was on my way to explore Prague, one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations. I took the train from Vienna, enjoyed a great conversation with a young Czech lady from Brno who is now living in Berlin, and finally around 3 pm I made it into the Holesovice Railway Station in Prague.
Later that afternoon and evening I took a personal tour of the Old Town area with local expert Jitka Simkova and her colleague Karel. We started on St. Wenceslav Square, with its early 20th century architecture, and walked through narrow cobble-stoned streets into the centre of Prague: Old Town Square. This expansive public square features two of the main attractions of Prague: the Old Town Hall with its famous astronomical clock, and the Gothic Church of Our Lady before Tyn with its distinctive roofline. Kinsky Palace and the Church of St. Nicholas along with a variety of pastel-coloured medieval houses impressed me as one of the most beautiful European squares I had ever seen.
We continued our walk to the famous historical Charles Bridge whose construction started in 1357 and continued for about 150 years. Walking back through the narrow streets we stopped at a typical Czech beer hall, U Medvikdku, where I got to taste some authentic Czech beer brewed on site. I also enjoyed pork tail and potato pancakes, a typical Czech dish.
On June 2 I got a tour through the historic Hotel Jalta, where I was staying, which dates back to the post-war era and is now a designated landmark. Then I enjoyed another tour and a delicious lunch just steps away at the historic Hotel Radisson SAS Alcron which distinguishes itself with its stunning Art Deco inspired interior. In the afternoon, Petra, my tour guide, took me to Strahov Monastery where I saw one of the most stunning Baroque libraries.
From there we explored the Loreto and Prague Castle with one of its main sights: the breathtaking St. Vitus Cathedral. The present Gothic cathedral was begun in 1344, although earlier churches had stood here since 925 A.D. The vaulted interior with its colourful stained-glass windows makes it one of the most impressive Gothic buildings anywhere.
On my final day in Prague I took a tour with my knowledgeable guide Richard through Josefov, the Jewish Quarter of Prague. Prague is intricately connected with famous writer Franz Kafka, and reminders of his past can be seen all over the Jewish Quarter. Formerly the Jewish ghetto, most of this area of town was demolished between 1893 and 1913 and reconstructed along the lines of the Parisian reconstruction.
Because the Nazis wanted to create an "exotic museum for an instinct race", many of the Jewish building are actually still left in Josefov. These include six synagogues, the Jewish cemetery and the Old Jewish Town Hall. Then Richard and I got an introduction to Jewish cuisine at the kosher King Solomon restaurant. Today's Josefov features a large number of impressive Art Nouveau apartment houses.
Richard then took me to Municipal House, a magnificent civic landmark and concert hall that was constructed between 1905 and 1912. It features stunning Art Nouveau architecture and amazing murals by the famous painter Alfons Mucha. In the second half of the afternoon I went on a boat trip on the Vltava River which gave me a completely different viewpoint of Prague from the water.
After another walk on the Charles Bridge, I crossed over into Mala Strana, the Little Quarter, on the other side of the river. I took the funicular up to Petrin Hill, where I admired a miniature version of the Eiffel Tower. Then I walked over to the Hradčany Hill which is the location of Prague Castle, which is said to be the largest castle in the world. I enjoyed a great outdoor dinner at the foot of the castle hill, overlooking the city.
On the morning of June 4 I took the bus from Prague to Telč, a city close to the Austrian border. My brother and my sister-in-law met me there and we jointly explored this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The pastel-coloured Renaissance houses on the main square, the castle, the Church of the Ascension of Mary and the pond behind main square made this a great final stop on my explorations of the Czech Republic.
