Most international law experts believe that China's so-called "indisputable sovereignty" over its maritime claim in the South China Sea has little merit, and is illegal under the United Convention on the Law of the Sea. The United States said that China's expansive claim increases the risk of confrontation, undermines regional stability, and dims the prospects for diplomacy, and paved the way for "US pivot" to Pacific. Philippines declares the claim is illegal and violates Philippines' and other nations' sovereign rights under UNCLOS. The Vietnamese president said that it has no legal foundation and scientific basis and rejected China's assertion. China defends its claim citing historical basis, most of which were taken from its imperial archives and ancient records. It has recently intensified its claim in the South China Sea which many believe to be a "gunboat diplomacy" against its weaker maritime neighbors.
South China Sea is composed of three main areas: Spratlys, (the biggest); Paracel, (the next biggest); and Scarborough Shoal (the smallest). All of them are being claimed by People's Republic of China and Taiwan. Spratlys is also being claimed partly by the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, and Indonesia; Scarborough by the Philippines; and Paracel by Vietnam.
CORRECTION: Indonesia is not a claimant of the Spratlys. Natuna Islands, an Indonesian territory in the northwestern waters of Borneo and which China also claims is not part of the Spratlys.

An awe-inspiring engineering feat, Dubai Palm Islands is definitely the largest artificial islands on earth. These Islands are three man made islands in the form of massive palm trees connected to the beaches of Dubai. The first island is the Palm Jumeirah, Jebel Ali Palm second and the third is the Palm Deira which is the biggest of them all. This artificial archipelago located off the coastline of United Arab Emirates in Persian Gulf.
Dubai islands project was commissioned by Sheikh Mohammed in an effort to maximize beachfront property. Dubai's palm tree-shaped resort island on land built from the sea will contribute 120 km of beaches. Aside from the construction of the ambitious expansion, there is also the problem of constructing a mini city, which consists of 4,500 high-end residential homes, miles of roads, luxurious hotels and many amenities that will require basic human resources including electricity, safe drinking water and many more. This enormous project will position Dubai as one of the top tourist destinations in the world.
I will tell you why these islands have appeared and that they must satisfy. Dubai is an emirate that open sea about 50 km (an estimate) and the sites required for building projects are on the beach. To view course and especially to "park" in front of the yacht's property or even assembly.
Well when the beach was not available, and demand persists, the beach had invented. And it appeared artificial islands. Hence so sophisticated forms of the islands: they had to provide a larger opening to the ocean.
This new concept quickly caught on. 'Only a' product 'high-end, the latest wrinkle in the most creative developers metropolis. A new source of land, location of the trick of the planet Earth! The job went, the two islands were settled immediately, with mixed development, spectacular, exorbitant, and finally in Dubai's specific style ... In parallel to the World archipelago started building and other projects are still on the drawing board Nakheel, developer. But crisis compels us to winter a little ...
Where is the dream of similar islands: In Lebanon, wants to build a cedar shaped islands, the symbol of this country. Russia wants to try an island / an archipelago in Black in Sochi at the 2014 Olympics, at least that is speaking through the past years. Also in Japan there are several large airports built on artificial islands.
The Palm Islands are artificial peninsulas constructed of sand dredged from the bottom of the Persian Gulf by the Belgian company Jan De Nul and the Dutch company Van Oord.
The sand is sprayed by the dredging ships, which are guided by DGPS, onto the required area in a process known as rain-bowing because of the arcs in the air when the sand is sprayed. The outer edge of each Palm's encircling crescent is a large rock breakwater. The breakwater of the Palm Jumeirah has over seven million tons of rock.
The Palm Islands are an artificial archipelago (islands) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Major commercial and residential infrastructures will be constructed by Nakheel Properties, a property developer in The UAE. The Belgian and Dutch dredging and marine contractors, Jan De Nul and Van Oord, some of the world's specialists in land reclamation, were hired to complete construction. The islands are the Palm Jumeirah, the Palm Jebel Ali and the Palm Deira.
Each settlement will be in the shape of a palm tree, topped with a crescent. The settlements will have a large number of residential, leisure and entertainment centers. The Palm Islands are located off the coast of The UAE in the Persian Gulf and will add 520 kilometers of beaches to the city of Dubai.
The first two islands will comprise of approximately 100 million cubic meters of rock and sand. The Palm Deira will be composed of approximately one billion cubic meters of rock and sand. All materials will be quarried in The UAE. Among the three islands, there will be over 100 luxury hotels, exclusive residential beach side villas and apartments, marinas, water theme parks, restaurants, shopping malls, sports facilities and health spas.
The creation of the Palm Jumeirah began in June 2001. Shortly after, the Palm Jebel Ali was announced and reclamation work began. The Palm Deira is planned to have a surface area of 46.35 square kilometers and was announced for development in October 2004.

BEIJING — A new Pentagon report released on Thursday says that China’s reclamation efforts in the Spratly Islands has grown dramatically over the last few months, and at a rate far faster than earlier this year.
Previous estimates that China has reclaimed 2,000 acres since December 2013 are wrong, the Pentagon report says, and the real amount is around 2,900 acres.
According to the Pentagon, China has reclaimed more land in the past 20 months than the other claimants combined over the past 40 years. China said in early August that it has halted its reclamation efforts in the island chain, although many countries question these claims.
On Fiery Cross Reef, China has built an airstrip that the country could use as an alternative to an aircraft carrier. Reuters reports that the 3,000-metre-long runway will most likely be operational by the end of this year.
At many of the reclamation sites in the Spratlys, China has also built channels and berthing areas for large ships.
The new Pentagon report, titled “The Asia-Pacific Maritime Security Strategy,” was required by Congress ahead of a 2015 defense bill.

US President Barack Obama has called on China to stop reclaiming land and building military facilities in disputed areas of the South China Sea.
Obama met Philippine President Benigno Aquino in Manila on Wednesday morning on the sidelines of a summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.
Obama stressed at a joint news conference that maintaining order based on rules is indispensable for the security and economic development of the region.
He added that China must cease land reclamation in the South China Sea.
Aquino said he agreed that laws supporting freedom of navigation should be upheld in the region.
The United States last month sent a naval vessel on what it called a "freedom-of-navigation patrol" within 12 nautical miles of an artificial island built by China in the South China Sea. It plans on continuing the mission.
At the APEC summit and the following East Asia Summit, Obama is expected to coordinate views with the Philippines and other Southeast Asian nations to press China to act with restraint regarding its increased presence in the region.

US President Barack Obama is expected to urge China to exercise self-restraint over disputes on waters in the South China Sea during his visits to Asian countries.
Obama has left Turkey for the Philippines after attending the summit of the Group of 20 nations in the Turkish city of Antalya.
Obama will join a meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Manila and later this week attend an East Asia summit in Malaysia.
The White House released a fact sheet on Monday, outlining the administration's strategy for the Asia-Pacific region.
The document says that China's maritime activity and cyber-attacks are issues of concern not only to the United States, but also to many countries in the region.
It says the President will continue to urge all claimants in the South China Sea to halt further land reclamation, construction of new facilities and militarization of features they occupy in order to reduce tensions.
In relation to the recent dispatch of a US naval ship to around artificial islands built by China, the fact sheet reiterates the government position that the United States will continue to fly, sail and operate wherever international law allows.

The United States is poised to confront China directly with its land reclamation program. The RAND Corporation's Mark Cozad joins me this week to discuss. The sad tale of Korea’s grandmothers turning to prostitution to make ends meet. Plus more regional news, next.
United States poised to confront China's island building
This week the Financial Times reported US warships would sail sometime in the next two weeks within the 12-nautical mile radius China claims as its sovereign territory in the South China Sea. Beijing particularly didn’t like that and Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said, “We will never allow any country to violate China's territorial waters and airspace in the Spratly Islands, in the name of protecting freedom of navigation and overflight.”
To get an idea of what we may see and the long term implications, I spoke with Mark Cozad, Senior Defense Policy Analyst with the RAND Corporation.
The sad tale of South Korea's grandma prostitutes
Today, prostitution is illegal in South Korea — at least that’s what the law says on the books, but in reality, it’s a flourishing industry despite red light districts disappearing. Cities are filled with massage parlors, room salons, and love motels where the world’s oldest profession prospers.
Another aspect of South Korean society that isn’t oft spoken of is the number of elderly living in abject poverty - neglected by their families and society. As the old saying goes, desperate times calls for desperate measures, and many elderly grandmothers turn to prostitution not only make ends meet, but to have some sort of human connection.
I love my parents, but don't tax me on them
In 2013, China passed a law aimed at encouraging filial piety (the giving of respect, caring for, and honoring one's parents), mandating that those who live apart from their elderly parents visit them frequently. Now the Guangzhou Daily newspaper reports a beauty salon chain wants to promote good moral values among its employees, so it's forced them to give part of their salary to their parents.
Rapists getting their just desserts
This week a pair of stories surfaced, detailing how rapists, are finally getting their just desserts. First in India, police said they have arrested the primary suspect in a sexual assault on a four-year-old girl. The baby was raped and then slashed with a blade before being abandoned by railway tracks. Then, Australian police officers get lucky and find film footage implicating five men in the range rape of a young teen.
China arrests Hackers at United States’ request
It was no big surprise that when Chinese President Xi Jinping went to DC, cyber security was on the menu. As reported, the deal reached didn’t garner a lot of trust, since what was repeated at press conferences was the same old rhetoric about how nations shouldn’t pilfer another country’s technology for personal gain and if there were accusations, the offending country would look into it and report back.
This past week, US intelligence and law enforcement agencies drew up a list of hackers the United States wanted arrested as a show of good faith… And you know what? China did.
UPDATE: India’s beef murder rip society apart, Prime Minister calls for unity
On October 1st’s Asia Brief, it was mentioned how a 50-year-old man in India was beaten to death and his 22-year-old son was severely injured after it was rumored the family had been eating beef. Authorities looking into the crime verified the victim had been storing mutton as the daughter who witnessed the beating said and not beef as was rumored. Charges of rioting and murder have been levied against at least 10 people, out of whom six have already been arrested.
Riding on the wings of dinosaurs in Japan
In East Asia, Japan is home to both Disneyland and Universal Studios. This week, the Universal announced plans for a new attraction that honestly made my inner child scream out in joy. Dubbed “The Flying Dinosaur,” it will do, just what it says.

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Southeast Asian countries on Tuesday backed a U.S. call to halt land reclamation in the South China Sea, underlining unease in the region over Beijing's continued expansion on disputed islands.
China has said it does not want the issue raised at this week's meeting of foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Kuala Lumpur.
But Malaysia Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said member nations agreed that "exercising self-restraint in the conduct of activities that would complicate or escalate tension must be enhanced" in the South China Sea.
Philippines Foreign Minister Albert Del Rosario accused China of carrying out "massive reclamation activities" in the disputed waters.
"We see no let up on the unilateral and aggressive activities of our northern neighbour in the South China Sea," he said at a meeting in the Malaysian capital.
"The massive reclamation activities ... have undermined peace, security and stability in the South China Sea," he said, urging Southeast Asian countries to address the issue with China.
