Remembering Carolyn Cassady, David Hubel, Paul Dietzel, Christopher Koch
The Muse Of The Beat Generation COOL CATS, CAT'S VISION, TIGERS, AND LIVING DANGEROUSLY Carolyn Cassady was the wife of Neal Cassady and lover of Jack Kerouac. She was the inspiration for the character Camille in Kerouac's On the Road. David Hubel won the 1981 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology along with Torsten Wiesel for the work on visual fields and perception. Paul Dietzel was the legendary football coach for the LSU Tigers and he won the 1958 National Championship. Christopher Koch was he Australian novelist who wrote the novel based on real events The Year Of Living Dangerously, which was made into a 1982 movie with Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver. David Hunter Hubel (February 27, 1926 -- September 22, 2013) was a Canadian neurophysiologist noted for his studies of the structure and function of the visual cortex. He was co-recipient with Torsten Wiesel of the 1981 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (shared with Roger W. Sperry), for their discoveries concerning information processing in the visual system. For much of his career, Hubel was the John Franklin Enders University Professor of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School. In 1978, Hubel and Wiesel were awarded the Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize from Columbia University. The Hubel and Wiesel experiments greatly expanded the scientific knowledge of sensory processing. The partnership lasted over twenty years and became known as one of the most prominent research pairings in science.[3] In one experiment, done in 1959, they inserted a microelectrode into the primary visual cortex of an anesthetized cat. They then projected patterns of light and dark on a screen in front of the cat. They found that some neurons fired rapidly when presented with lines at one angle, while others responded best to another angle. Some of these neurons responded to light patterns and dark patterns differently. Hubel and Wiesel called these neurons simple cells."[4] Still other neurons, which they termed complex cells, detected edges regardless of where they were placed in the receptive field of the neuron and could preferentially detect motion in certain directions.[5] These studies showed how the visual system constructs complex representations of visual information from simple stimulus features.[6] Hubel and Wiesel received the Nobel Prize for two major contributions: firstly, their work on development of the visual system, which involved a description of ocular dominance columns in the 1960s and 1970s; and secondly, their work establishing a foundation for visual neurophysiology, describing how signals from the eye are processed by the brain to generate edge detectors, motion detectors, stereoscopic depth detectors and color detectors, building blocks of the visual scene. Paul Franklin Dietzel (September 5, 1924 -- September 24, 2013) was an American football player, coach, and college athletics administrator. He served as the head coach at Louisiana State University (1955--1961), the United States Military Academy (1962--1965), and the University of South Carolina (1966--1974), compiling a career record of 109--95--5. Dietzel's 1958 LSU team concluded an 11--0 season with a win over Clemson in the Sugar Bowl and was a consensus national champion. For his efforts that year, Dietzel was named the National Coach of the Year by both the American Football Coaches Association and the Football Writers Association of America. Dietzel also served as the athletic director at South Carolina (1966--1975), at Indiana University Bloomington (1977--1978), and at LSU (1978--1982). After graduating from Miami in 1948, Dietzel began his coaching career as an assistant coach. He served under such legendary coaches as Red Blaik at Army and Bear Bryant at the University of Kentucky. In 1958, however, Dietzel came up with a unique three-team platoon system. It consisted of three teams of 11 different players, and was designed to keep his players from being fatigued in an era when most players started on both offense and defense. Instead of replacing individual players during the game, Dietzel would bring in an entirely new set of players between plays and series. The three teams were called the White Team (the first-string offense and defense), the Gold (Go) Team (the second-string offense), and the Chinese Bandits (the second-string defense). The system worked, as the Tigers went undefeated and won the a national championship. The Chinese Bandits, the second-string defensive unit, which consisted of less-talented but ferocious players, became hugely popular with LSU fans and remains one of the most legendary pieces of LSU football history- published: 15 Oct 2013
