Gerald Seminatore, Tenor and Mark Salters, Piano
Live performance, Meng Concert Hall, Orange County, CA 2010
Information below.
INTRODUCTION John Kander's musical setting of Sullivan Ballou's last letter was premiered by American soprano Renee Fleming at the Richard Tucker Awards Ceremony in 1993.
This is audio from a live performance. In order to publish and share the audio on YouTube, a group of images illustrating the text was assembled to accompany the piece.
BACKGROUND
Rhode Island attorney and stage assemblyman Sullivan Ballou married Sarah Hart Shumway in 1855. Ballou entered the military in 1861 after the Civil War broke out. He joined the 2nd Rhode Island Infantry and became judge advocate of the Rhode Island militia. On July 21, 1861 Ballou died at the first Battle of Bull Run at the age of 32. His famous letter was written a week before his death, but was never mailed. It was found several years later when a collection of personal belongings of Union soliders was retrieved from Virginia. Sarah Ballou never remarried and lived in New Jersey until her death in 1917. It is unclear if she ever read her husband's final testament.
The text of the letter is available at http://www.pbs.org/civilwar/war/ballou_letter.html

First aired: November 2, 2013.
This week we focus on "The Landing," a new musical at The Vineyard Theatre by composer John Kander and writer Greg Pierce who join us with the production's director Walter Bobbie and a member of its cast, David Hyde Pierce. Kander discusses why he chose to work with Greg, the first person with whom he's created an entire musical since the death of his long time professional partner, Fred Ebb, in 2004. "The Landing" is a departure for Kander from the big "razzle-dazzle" shows he did with Ebb; it is an intimate chamber piece (3 separate works written for 4 actors and 4 instruments), but though "The Landing" is small in scope, it has huge emotional power.
Next we focus on Broadway's upcoming production of "Macbeth" at The Vivan Beaumont Theater. Suzy Evans of "Backstage" joins Susan Haskins on an excursion to Lincoln Center's main rehearsal room where they interview members of the creative team for this new take on Shakespeare's gruesome. Directed by Jack O'Brien, this version features Ethan Hawke in the title role. The play is "basically... a nightmare," O'Brien tells us, "a mythic meditation on addiction to all kinds of power."

Flora the Red Menace is a musical with a book by George Abbott and Robert Russell, music by John Kander, and lyrics by Fred Ebb. The original 1965 production starred Liza Minnelli in the title role in her Broadway debut, for which she won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. This was the first collaboration between Kander and Ebb, who later wrote Broadway and Hollywood hits such as Cabaret and Chicago.
Although not full of well-known or show-stopping numbers, the score does present a valuable insight into the later work of Kander and Ebb. Like Cabaret and Chicago, it features a headstrong heroine and has a strong dose of political content.Act I
Prologue – Ensemble
"Unafraid" – Flora, Students and Ensemble
"All I Need is One Good Break" – Flora, Harry Toukarian and Artists
"Not Every Day of the Week" – Flora and Harry Toukarian

"Sign Here" – Harry Toukarian
"The Flame" – Comrade Ada, Harry Toukarian and Comrades
"Palomino Pal" – The Lady and Cowboy

"Hello, Waves" – Harry Toukarian and Flora
