His administration introduced a wide range of social and political reforms but is most notable for its nationalization of the Iranian oil industry, which had been under British control since 1913 through the Anglo-Persian Oil Company (APOC/AIOC) (later British Petroleum or BP).
Mosaddegh was removed from power in a coup on 19 August 1953, organised and carried out by the United StatesCIA at the request of the British MI6 which chose Iranian General Fazlollah Zahedi to succeed Mosaddegh.
The coup is sometimes known as the TPAJAX Project after its CIA cryptonym, however, in Iran it is referred to as the 28 Mordad 1332 coup, after its date on the Iranian calendar., which is incorrect as the Operation's proper name was TPAjax (TP standing for Tudeh Party of Iran the Russian backed communist party of Iran} Mosaddegh was imprisoned for three years, then put under house arrest until his death.

In August 1953 the head of democratically elected government of Iran, Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh, was overthrown by a coup orchestrated by the United Kingdom and the United States. In the former it was done under the name of “Operation Boot” and in the latter “TPAJAX Project” AKA “Operation Ajax”. Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi held several titles: His Imperial Majesty, Shahanshah (King of Kings,[1] Emperor), Aryamehr (Light of the Aryans) and Bozorg Arteshtārān (Head of the Warriors,
بزرگ ارتشتاران
Mohammad Reza came to power during World War II after an Anglo-Soviet invasion forced the abdication of his father Reza Shah.
During his reign, the Iranian oil industry was briefly nationalized under Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh before a US backed coup d'état overturned the regime and brought back foreign oil firms.
Iran marked the anniversary of 2,500 years of continuous monarchy since the founding of the Persian Empire by Cyrus the Great.
The Shah's White Revolution was a series of economic, social and political reforms with the stated intention of transforming Iran into a global power and modernizing the nation.
However, poorly planned and executed, it instead resulted in a series of unintended consequences, alienating the general population from the government.
The lower class saw many of the government programs, on which they relied for subsistence, eliminated or radically altered.
The middle class saw the reforms as only aesthetic, giving them no real democratic or civil rights.
While the wealthy perceived the reforms as undermining the basis of their power and privilege.
A secular Muslim himself, Mohammad Reza gradually lost support from the Shi'a clergy of Iran, particularly due to his strong policy of modernization, secularization, conflict with the traditional class of merchants known as bazaari, and recognition of Israel.
Various additional controversial policies were enacted, including the banning of the communist Tudeh Party, and a general suppression of political dissent by Iran's intelligence agency, SAVAK.
According to official statistics, Iran had as many as 2,200 political prisoners in 1978, a number which multiplied rapidly as a result of the revolution.
Several other factors contributed to strong opposition to the Shah among certain groups within Iran, the most notable of which were the US and UK backed coup d'état against Mosaddegh in 1953, clashes with Islamists, and increased communist activity. By 1979, political unrest had transformed into a revolution which, on 16 January, forced the Shah to leave Iran.
Soon thereafter, the Iranian monarchy was formally abolished, and Iran was declared an Islamic republic.

Mohammad Rezā Shāh Pahlavī
محمدرضاشاه پهلوی
October 1919 -- 27 July 1980) was the last Shah of Iran.
He ruled Iran from 16 September 1941 until his overthrow by the Iranian Revolution on 11 February 1979.
He was the second and last monarch of the House of Pahlavi of the Iranian monarchy.

From then on and since Eisenhower’s administration, coups became an inseparable part of America’s foreign policy.
In “Uninterrupted Wars; the 53 Coup” Malcolm Burn, Deputy Director of National Security Archive gives a detailed account of both internal and external players, the reasons and the results of the coup; a turning point in which democracy and the will of people were trampled for the sake of the recronation of a biddable king and the ouster of a public figure who had recently nationalized Iranian oil industry. The film goes on to show how this incident has been significant in shaping today’s ties between Iran and the USA even after six decades.

Shortly before the victory of the Islamic Revolution of Iran in I979, the Shah or former monarch and dictator of the country fled. To voice their dissent a group of revolutionary university students entered the US embassy compound or “den of espionage” as it was later dubbed, and there they found piles of shredded documents that proved the US’s interference in Iran’s internal affairs. The hostage crisis as it was called in the US had many ups and downs but finally the issue ended diplomatically with the signing of the Algiers Accords on January 19, 1981. The staff of the embassy were held in the US embassy compound in Tehran for a total of 444 days. This event played a significant role in shaping the Iran-US relations.
Now after almost 30 years, four people at the heart of the events talk about their experience and voice their views in retrospect. Two former students and two former US officials held in Tehran.

The Shah’s entrance to the States created an immediate outcry in Iran as the public and the revolutionary government demanded his extradition to face trials for his wrongdoings. This action of the US infuriated the people as they were reminded of how 26 years earlier the Shah had fled abroad while the Embassy-based American CIA and British intelligence organized a coup d'état to overthrow the democratically elected Prime Minister of Iran Mohammad Mosaddegh.
