After four-and-a-half years of deadly conflict and many failed Western-backed efforts to remove the Assad regime from power, millions of people are fleeing the violence in Syria.
And just as world leaders were assembling at the United Nations last week, the battleground in the Middle East shifted - suddenly and deliberately.
In a dramatic move, Russia increased its military presence in the country and then launched a fierce bombing campaign against groups opposed to the Syrian regime. On top of it, there is speculation of a ground assault.
It all happened so swiftly that many are wondering if Russian President Vladimir Putin is outmaneovering those who are trying to push the Syrian president out of power.
When Russian warplanes then entered Turkey's airspace, which is bordering Syria, tension increased further, especially as the American Secretary of Defense said he did not believe it was a simple Russian mistake.
It demonstrated clearly the potential for a big power confrontation inherent in the Syrian conflict.
"What we are trying now is have a legitimate transition in order to save Syria and to have a unified, secular, whole Syria going forward. But if the Russians insist on fighting against that, there could be very serious consequences. The most serious of which would be that... Russia itself will become a target... So if they are not there to actually fight Daesh, it's very dangerous for the longterm," US Secretary of State John Kerry told Al Jazeera.
Behind the scenes there is intense work now underway to break some sort of political deal. There is even talk of a transition that would allow Syria's President Assad to stay on just a little longer.
British Prime Minister David Cameron believes that Assad "can't be part of Syria's future. Of course it requires a sustained diplomatic push in terms of reconstruction and transition in Syria ... we support a Syria without Assad and a Syria without ISIL."
From the American and European side, the efforts to end the Syrian crisis involve many players, including US Secretary of State, John Kerry; the European Union's Foreign Policy Chief, Federica Mogherini; and Britain's Prime Minister, David Cameron.
They talk to Al Jazeera to discuss the impact of Russia's military campaign in Syria, the threat of ISIL, the refugee crisis, and Assad's future in Syria.

All eyes are on Vienna as talks on Syria are set to take place with upwards of a dozen countries including, most significantly, Iran in attendance for the first time. While talks have taken place previously without much to show for it, there is talk of a possible change in Saudi & US policy after their efforts to oust President Assad have so far failed. With Russia helping Syria rid itself of terrorists in a manner that even the US couldn’t muster, is a political solution on the horizon?

Presidents Obama and Putin share icy encounter over Syria
Sharp divisions over the civil war in Syria led to an icy encounter Monday between President Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom U.S. officials view as a major hurdle in their drive to force Syrian President Bashar Assad from power.
The two leaders held their first face-to-face meeting in a year at the summit of the world's richest countries days after Obama deepened U.S. involvement in the Syrian conflict. Aides said the CIA would begin supplying arms and ammunition to some opposition forces in hopes of shifting the military balance away from Assad.
In comments to reporters, Obama and Putin expressed support for still-unscheduled Syrian peace negotiations in Geneva, but offered no sign of progress in ending a war that has killed at least 93,000 people. Russia, Syria's most powerful ally, has sent weapons to Assad's forces and is considering deliveries of sophisticated antiaircraft missile batteries.
Obama noted that he and Putin had "differing perspectives" on Syria but said they both sought to reduce the bloodshed and secure Assad's arsenal of chemical weapons. "We want to try to resolve the issue through political means if possible," he said.
"Of course our opinions don't coincide," Putin responded. But he said he hoped "to solve the situation peacefully" and said they "agreed to push the parties to the negotiations table."
Obama tried to lighten the mood by joking about their favorite sports. He cited Putin's expertise in judo and "my declining skills in basketball." Then he added, "And we both agree that as you get older, it takes more time to recover."
Putin cracked a brief smile before adding an awkward admission of the tension: "The president wants to relax me with his statement."
Obama arrived at the Lough Erne resort for the annual meeting of the Group of 8 industrialized nations a day after Putin had roundly denounced Western support for the Syrian rebels. After meeting with British Prime Minister David Cameron in London, Putin described the anti-Assad forces as lawless thugs and cannibals.
"I believe one does not really need to support the people who not only kill their enemies, but open up their bodies, eat their intestines in front of the public gaze and cameras," Putin said, a reference to video posted online that appeared to show a rebel fighter cutting open the body of a loyalist soldier. "Are these the people you want to support?"
Even before that remark, Western officials had low hopes for a breakthrough at the G-8. The Russians have little incentive to push Assad into peace negotiations while his forces have the upper hand on the battlefield. Obama's reluctant and delayed decision to arm the rebels is viewed as an attempt to turn the tide in favor of the opposition and force the Syrian leader into talks.
The last time Obama and Putin met, at the G-20 summit a year ago in Los Cabos, Mexico, they barely made eye contact and seemed uncomfortable sitting next to each other. They were equally frosty Monday, sitting side by side in armchairs during their 12-minute meeting with reporters. Each looked straight ahead, unsmiling, as the other spoke, although Putin sometimes stared at the floor.
The White House offered another take on the rapport between the leaders. Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes called the two-hour meeting "businesslike."
Rhodes said the leaders spent about one-fifth of their time on Syria, and he tried to focus on areas of agreement. Putin and Obama agreed to a new version of the Cooperative Threat Reduction program, a post-Cold War nonproliferation program that secured or dismantled nuclear, biological and chemical weapons in former Soviet states.
And both expressed cautious optimism that the surprise election of Hassan Rowhani, a moderate cleric, as president of Iran may yield opportunities to defuse the international standoff over Tehran's nuclear development program.
Rhodes also acknowledged that the Russians were "more skeptical" of evidence that led the White House to declare last week that Assad's forces had used small amounts of sarin nerve gas in attacks that killed 100 to 150 people. The White House has not released the evidence or described how it was obtained, or by whom.
The impasse over Syria undermined Cameron's attempt to demonstrate loose camaraderie at the two-day G-8 meeting. The summit at this lush lakeshore golf haven was billed as a chance for world leaders to talk casually and privately -- away from protests and prying eyes -- about economic initiatives.

More European countries are retreating from their harsh stance on the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel says President Assad must be involved in any talks aimed at ending the conflict in Syria. Merkel also cited Iran and Saudi Arabia as two important regional partners which Berlin needs to talk to in connection with the crisis in Syria. She made the remarks following an EU summit in Brussels. French foreign minister Laurent Fabius suggested earlier this month that a diplomatic solution to Syria’s crisis is impossible without Assad.

I Wish Nobody Was Bombing Syria
by Ron Paul
The US regime change policy for Syria has been a catastrophe. More than 200,000 killed and an entire country reduced to rubble at least partly because President Obama decided that “Assad has lost his legitimacy.” How is it that the president of a country 6,000 miles away has the authority to decide whether another leader belongs in office or not? What if Rouhani in Iran decided that Obama had lost his legitimacy for killing a number of American citizens by drone without charge or trial? Would we accept that?
At least three years of US efforts to train rebels to overthrow the Syrian government has produced, as General Lloyd Austin, Commander of US Central Command, testified last month, “four or five” trained and vetted “moderates” in Syria. The $500 million appropriated for this purpose has disappeared.
The neocon solution to this failure to overthrow Assad and “degrade and destroy” ISIS is to increase the bombing and lead a ground invasion of Syria. The confusing policy of fighting Assad and also fighting his enemies does not seem to bother the neocons. They want us to forget all about their recent failures in Libya and Iraq and to try the same failed strategy one more time.
But something dramatic happened last week. Russian president Vladimir Putin delivered a speech at the United Nations criticizing the US policy of partnering with one set of extremists – al-Qaeda and its allies – to attack both ISIS and Assad. “Do you realize now what you have done?” asked Putin.
Shortly after Putin’s UN speech, he requested and was granted authority from the Russian parliament to use force in Syria in response to the Syrian government’s request for assistance against the rebels. Russian fighters and bombers began flying sorties over Syria almost immediately. In less than a week of Russian bombing, considerable damage appears to have been done to both ISIS and to al-Qaeda affiliates – some of which are considered allies by the US and were actually trained by the CIA.
It may be tempting to cheer Russian military action in Syria, as it seems ISIS is finally suffering some considerable losses. Press reports suggest large numbers of desertions in their ranks after the Russian attacks. All of a sudden what looked to be an inevitable ISIS takeover of Syria once Assad was overthrown, seems far less likely with the Russians on the scene.
But I cannot cheer the bombs, whether they are Russian bombs or US bombs or French or British bombs. I do not believe a terrorist group created by foreign intervention in the region will be solved by more foreign intervention in the region. Bombs represent a total failure of policy. They destroy a country’s economy and infrastructure.
I wish the American people would finally demand that their government end its destructive policy of trying to change any regime that does not bow to Washington’s demands. I wish Congress respected our Constitution enough to demand that the president seek a declaration of war before attacking a foreign country. I wish President Bush and his neocon advisors had never decided to overthrow the Syrian government. I wish President Obama had fired the neocons who led him from one foolish intervention to another. I wish the CIA had not trained rebels to fight alongside al-Qaeda in Syria. I wish we would reject the shrill cries of the warmongers. I wish the US media was more than just a propaganda arm of the US government.
I am not thrilled that Russia is bombing Syria. I wish nobody was bombing Syria.

Syria is an ancient country of culture located between the Mediterranean and the desert. Its ancient desert metropolises, old villages, impenetrable fortresses and biblical harbour towns have witnessed the rich and fascinating history of bygone times.Damascus is the capital of Syria and symbol of culture in the Near East and located a hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls and it was from there that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Khan As´Ad Pasha is often referred to as being the most beautiful caravansary in the Near East. Its inner courtyard is covered by eight mighty and partly painted cupolas each of which is supported by four pillars. Set amid the desert savannah of Syria are the proud remains of a unique and mysterious metropolis, Palmyra, a legendary ancient city that was built due to the existence of the Tadmur Oasis. The shortest and fastest route from the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia and Persia travels directly past the Tadmur Oasis thus it was only a question of time until an important trading post was founded there. Around a quarter of a million Bedouins live in Syria’s desert areas. They are nomads who speak Arabic and belong to the Muslim faith and their income is derived from sheep, goats and camels which produce both milk and meat. They travel the desert accompanied by their animals. Further north on the edge of the fertile Al Ghab Ditch is the ancient metropolis of Apameia, one of the most beautiful cities in the Near East. Apart from Bosra and Palmyra this huge city of ruins is one of the most important Hellenist regions in Syria. Syria is the Pearl Of The East. With deserts, wadis and mountains, castles and crusader fortresses, Roman ruins, palaces and mosques. A legendary country between both past and future whose cultural treasures still survive today.

Take a tour of Ancient City of Bosra in Bosra, Syrian Arab Republic -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The half-standing ruins of this dark-stoned city rise out of the southern Syrian landscape.
Nearly deserted today, Bosra has a great deal of history from thousands of years of habitation by different cultures.
The city is at least old enough to have appeared in historical documents from the fourteenth century BC.
Early in the first millennium AD, Bosra became a part of the Roman Empire, which is the strongest influence seen at work in the ruins.
Since then, it has been the territory of the Byzantine Empire and the Arabs who swept in during the seventh century.
Among the ruined city's Roman and Christian structures, the fortified amphitheater is probably the greatest.
This deep, stadium-like building is mostly intact and gives a taste of what Bosra may once have been like.

Travel video about destination Damascus in Syria.
Damascus is the capital of Syria and is a symbol of culture in the Near East. A hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast, the strategically located city was once the capital of the Umayyad.Cannons, the busts of various presidents and military vehicles are displayed in the large courtyard of the Takiyeh Mosque, an ancient Dervish monastery complex. Built in 1554 and designed by Ottoman master architect, Sinan, it also includes an adjoining inn for the numerous pilgrims who travelled to Mecca. Damascus has always been much prized: by the pharaohs and the Babylonian monarch, Nebukadnezar, and later, Alexander The Great. Then came Persian, Roman and Islamic emperors followed by the Crusaders and Mongols. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls. It was from here that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Romans built a fort here that was constantly extended with impressive walls and towers and located directly outside the city wall, the River Barada was also of strategic importance. Although the Mongols destroyed the inner buildings, the fortress walls survived. The Suq is an important part of every Islamic city, a market that originated in ancient times. Thousands of shops in numerous interconnected lanes form the commercial heart of Damascus. In the Gold Suq everything glitters, bracelets, rings and even a large variety of kitchen utensils. Damascus has for thousands of years been a place desired by the powerful. Yet it has managed to survive and is still the most beautiful capital city in the Near East.

Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest. Its capital Damascus is among the oldest continuously-inhabited cities in the world. A country of fertile plains, high mountains, and deserts, it is home to diverse ethnic and religious groups, including the Arab, Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians, Kurds, Circassians, Mhallami, Mandeans and Turks. Religious groups include Sunni, Christians, Alawite, Druze religion, Mandeanism and Yezidi. Sunni Arabs make up the largest population group in Syria.
In English, the name "Syria" was formerly synonymous with the Levant (known in Arabic as al-Sham) while the modern state encompasses the sites of several ancient kingdoms and empires, including the Eblan civilization of the 3rd millennium BC. In the Islamic era, Damascus was the seat of the Umayyad Caliphate and a provincial capital of the Mamluk Sultanate in Egypt.
The modern Syrian state was established after World War I as a French mandate, and represented the largest Arab state to emerge from the formerly Ottoman-ruled Arab Levant. It gained independence in April 1946, as a parliamentary republic. The post-independence period was tumultuous, and a large number of military coups and coup attempts shook the country in the period 1949–1971. Between 1958-61, Syria entered a brief union with Egypt, which was terminated by a military coup. The Arab Republic of Syria came into being in 1963, transforming from the Republic of Syria in the Ba'athist coup d'état. Syria was under Emergency Law from 1963 to 2011, effectively suspending most constitutional protections for citizens, and its system of government is considered to be non-democratic. Bashar al-Assad has been president since 2000 and was preceded by his father Hafez al-Assad, who was in office from 1970 to 2000.

Travel video about destination Palmyra in Syria.
The ancient city of Palmyra is located in the Tadmur Oasis in the very heart of the Syrian savannah. Surrounded by arid desert it was once a proud and pulsating trading metropolisand everywhere can be seen relics of a bygone age that was full of myth and mystique. The influence of the legendary oasis city grew due to it having been regarded as a province of Rome. The Romans soon recognized the strategic importance of Palmyra as it was a vital centre of trade in the Near East. Palmyra’s fine buildings such as its Amphitheatre were typical of its impressive architecture. Most of the Tetrapylon has been restored. It towers high above the ancient ruins and the Great Colonnade was once the main street of the historic metropolis. Beyond the city walls in the Valley Of Tombs the mystic atmosphere of the former caravan city becomes apparent. Several well preserved mausoleums give the surreal looking desert landscape a truly ghostly atmosphere. The architecture of these multi-floored burial places are unique in the world. The view from the Arabian fortress extends across the picturesque ruins of the city to the endless horizons of the desert. The oasis and ancient remains of Palmyra look almost surreal as if in a dream yet the old ruins and the mighty fortress really do exist in very tangible and resplendent form.

A young couple from Mississippi faces federal charges after the pair was arrested over the weekend for conspiring and attempting to provide material support and resources to the Islamic State (ISIS) group.
The arrested couple, Jaelyn Delshaun Young, 20, and Muhammad Oda Dakhlalla, 22, had been in fact revealing their plans of joining ISIS to covert FBI agents online since May, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Young allegedly said her skills in math and chemistry and work experience at an analytical lab as well as her partner’s computer science skills would be useful to ISIS. The couple also expressed that they would love to provide medical aid, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Young said the wedding took place in June and the couple would travel to Istanbul and eventually enter Syria to join ISIS using honeymoon as their cover story, CNN reported.
The couple was arrested at the Golden Triangle Regional Airport Saturday morning, just before boarding a plane to Istanbul. They could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted, Reuters reported.

I walked the alley and found an unusual cafe. It is the story cafe. The storyteller is telling the old story cafe. Gore Syrian people to read because they can not understand even more, but people cheer and rejoice. Is it because the atmosphere ... Tourists are easy to indulge in their own Arabian Nights. Tip Trays, laid down in the story is chidatneun towards the climax. "Already I came in third place, very unique. It's one of the places you should see just once and you come to Syria. You can get a feeling of antiquity as if to return. It likes on very old Medina. I'll be a unique and interesting experience. "Finally, my travel story cafe out the end of the night Damascus also goes deeper.

Don't Blame Syrian Refugees [The Johno Show Episode 302]

Welcome to The Johno Show friends. Today we are going to talk about the horrific events in Paris and the fallout and finger pointing that has resulted from it.
For those that have watched The Johno Show before, you know that I’ve been outspoken about the Syrian Refugee Crisis. I’ve supported Donald Trump on many issues but my views are quickly changing. I believe Ben Carson, Carly Fiorina and Ted Cruz are very scary individuals and I don’t believe a word that comes out of Hillary Clinton’s mouth.
Unfortunately, the events in Paris have once again provided a knee jerk political response from the Republicans. Giving them an excuse to drive bigotry and hatred. All are up in arms over Obama's plan to allow 10,000 Syrian refugees into the United States over the next year.
Ben Carson said the U.S. should block refugees from the Middle East. Marco Rubio said we can’t take more refugees.Ted Cruz called Obama's plan "lunacy" and called for a block against Muslim refugees claiming that Christian refugees pose no risk. Donald Trump called the Syrian refugees Trojan horses . Trump also said he would institute surveillance of mosques in America.
Jeb wants us to protect the Christian Refugees from Syria but feels we should scrutinize Muslims leaving that region. Saying “I do think there is a special important need to make sure that Christians from Syria are being protected because they are being slaughtered in the country and who would take care of the number of Christians that right now are completely displaced?"
Republican governors are saying they will block refugees from entering their states, citing concerns over terrorism. And the divisive argument has escalated into talks of separating Christian Syrian Refugees from their Muslim counterparts.
Take a note from French President François Hollande speaking at the Palace of Versailles on Monday where he reminded everyone that the attacks killed people of nineteen different nationalities. That France is a diverse and young country that does not distinguish between color or origin. He said the victims only crime was being alive and belonging to a France that is open to the world.
He is quoted as saying "I want France to remain herself, they will never manage to change the face of France, never damage the French spirit, never prevent us from living wholly and freely...Human civilization is enriched thanks to France, and that's why France needs to pave the way. Terrorism will not destroy the Republic, the Republic will destroy terrorism.
And my personal message to the American Republican party and those that want to point the finger at Muslims and call them all Terrorists is that Daesh is not a religion. Daesh is simply perverting a few sentences within a holy book in order to justify murder, rape and enslavement. Much like those in America who use the bible to argue against a woman’s right to choose and same-sex marriage. They too found a couple of sentences within a holy book to argue their case and justify their cause. Not all Christians are against a woman’s right to choose just as not all Muslims are Terrorists.
Now, if you’re looking for someone to blame for this attack look no further than your political ally German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Her naive announcement that Germany’s borders and immigration were open to all is the single biggest political mistake since Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Her recklessness is to blame for this tragedy. She invited the wolf at the door and he graciously accepted without providing any documentation or statement of Allegiance to his new found homeland.

In statements to the journalists following the meeting with a French delegation, including a number of parliamentarians, intellectuals, and media men, headed by member of the French National Assembly Thierry Mariani, President al-Assad said, in response to a question about his reaction on what happened in Paris on Friday “First of all, we offer our condolences to the French families that lost dear members yesterday, and we are the closest people to this situation to understand what happened yesterday in France, because we have been suffering from this kind of terrorism for the last five years in Syria.
“And what happened in France yesterday cannot be separated from what happened in Beirut two days ago, because this is terrorism. That’s why you shouldn’t look at terrorism as separate arenas, like looking at Syria’s arena, Yemen, Libya, France. Actually, it’s one arena all around the world.”
Asked about where the Syrian intelligence services have any indication or information that either the people who committed this act came from Syria or were in contact with any group in Syria, the President said “No, we don’t have any information about what happened, but it’s not about the names, and who went and who didn’t. We warned about what’s going to happen in Europe three years ago, and we said don’t mess with the fault line in Syria. It’s going to be like an earthquake that will reverberate around the world, and unfortunately the European officials didn’t pay attention to what we said. They thought that we are threatening, and they didn’t learn from what happened at the beginning of this year, from Charlie Hebdo.”
He added “Just giving statements that you are against terrorism means nothing. You have to go and fight terrorism, you have to pursue the correct and right policies, that’s what they have to do.”
In his response to a question whether Syria is ready to fight with France against terrorism if they ask and help the French intelligence services, President Assad said
“They don’t have to ask; they only have to be serious. This is where we are ready to fight terrorism with them.”
“We are ready to fight terrorism with whoever wants to really fight terrorism, and the French government is not serious yet,” he added.
In a message he was asked to send to the French President Francois Hollande, President al-Assad said “Work for the sake and the interest of your people. And the question that any Frenchman would ask today: did the French policy during the last five years do any good to the French people? Actually, no. So, the first thing I’ll ask is to work for the interest of the French people, and if he wants to do that, he has to change his policy.”
Asked about the condition for the Syrian government and the French government to work together, or for the Syrian intelligence services to work with the French intelligence services, President Assad said “You cannot talk about intelligence cooperation without political cooperation. You cannot talk about intelligence cooperation in order to fight terrorism while at the same time your policies, the policies of the same government, are going in the direction of supporting terrorism. That’s what I meant by being serious.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and United Nations and Arab League Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura held a press conference on Wednesday, November 4, following a meeting in Moscow.
SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): "We have agreed to meet in the nearest future, literally within the next two weeks, again in the same format. And we have outlined two concrete tasks that we need to solve on this stage. First of all we need to develop common understanding of which exact groups on Syrian territory are terrorist ones. Yes, we have list of Security Council, but there are also new branches of al-Qaeda, ISIS, and Al-Nusra Front, which are not connected [to that list], but who also use terrorist methods to fish in troubled waters. Everybody has agreed that we need some clarity in this question. The second issue that was imposed as a task or as homework for the upcoming days, and I hope it is not going to be long period, it is to bring some clarity on who exactly is an opposition, which is supposed to be moderate and to become a partner during the negotiations prepared by de Mistura and his team in the context of political regulation of the crisis in Syria."
SOT, Staffan de Mistura, United Nations and Arab League envoy to Syria (English): "And we have a plan. The plan is based on the Geneva Communique and on the Vienna Outline. They mention very clearly a form of all-inclusive governance - we need to work on that quickly - and the working groups that the UN has prepared, and where we hope to have everyone included, are going to work on that direction and should be doing [so] quickly, and then a new constitution and new elections. This is a road map that can be achieved and I think if we maintain the momentum we will get there. Thank you."
SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): "In order for inter-Syrian, representative, inclusive and trustworthy dialogue to begin, we need all spectrums of Syrian society to be present at the negotiating table, including all groups of opposition. And I want to agree with what Mr. de Mistura has said regarding the necessity for external players, which have decisive influence on different opposition groups, to use their influence to persuade those groups to gather for the political negotiations with constructive basis and so they would not try to pull the blanket, and to form a united delegation and to think just like a government delegation - not about personal destiny, but about their own country and people."

wn.com/Crosstalk Talking Syria
After a series of horrific terrorist attacks, a truly global coalition to fight and destroy ISIL is in the making. At the same time Washington continues to ignore those who are really doing the fighting, particularly Russia. Are arrogance and false pride the real barriers to peace in Syria?

An unsourced story originating on an Israeli website claimed Russia was about to deploy significant military assistance to Syria to fight Islamic State. This set the media aflame and had Washington issuing warnings. The story was not only unsourced, but also untrue. But it did reveal how the West frames its illegal war against Syria. How has Russia’s stepped up role in Syria changed the politics of that country’s civil war and the regime? Washington acknowledges Russia’s bombing campaign at the request of Damascus, but still does not accept it. Is this because Washington does not practice diplomacy anymore? Democracynow.org - President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin held their first formal meeting in two years on Monday in New York to discuss Syria and Ukraine. During the 90-minute meeting, Obama and Putin agreed that their armed forces should hold talks to avoid coming into conflict in Syria, where fighting has killed more than 200,000 people and displaced millions. Both leaders addressed the United Nations Monday, with Putin defending Russia’s support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and Obama expressing willingness to work with Russia to resolve the crisis in Syria. According to reports, however, the United States ignored a Russian offer in 2012 to have Assad step aside at some point after peace talks had started between the regime and the opposition. And former Finnish president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Martti Ahtisaari has said Western powers failed to seize on the 2012 proposal because the United States, Britain and France were convinced that the Syrian dictator was about to fall. Since then, tens of thousands more have been killed, and militants from ISIL have seized swaths of Syria. We talk about the crisis in Syria and the Obama-Putin meeting with Vijay Prashad, professor of international studies at Trinity College and columnist for the Indian magazine Frontline. He also is the author of several books, including "Arab Spring, Libyan Winter."
