The Micronesian island nation of Palau has been called one of the seven underwater wonders of the world, thanks to its healthy and diverse marine ecosystem. Watch rare underwater footage of these South Pacific waters, teeming with sharks, sea turtles, vibrant coral reefs, and schools of tropical fish.
“The ocean is very important—it is our culture, our way of life, our economy, and our self-sustaining source of what makes us Palauans,” says Palau President Tommy Remengesau, Jr. But the waters of the “Pearl of the Pacific” are changing and need our help. That’s why the people of Palau are coming together in support of a large, fully protected marine reserve to protect this global treasure and a local economy for future generations.

Erik Vereen, Fishing Tour Operator, Island Seed Ltd.: What makes Palau's oceans so attractive to tourists is that there's such a diversity of fish out there that it's very delicate and one of a kind.
Tommy Remengesau, Jr., President of Palau: You come to Palau and it's guaranteed that any snorkeler and any scuba diver will be able to see a shark, and that's the value of conservation.
The ocean is very important for Palau, because really it is our culture, our way of life—it is our economy. It's our self-sustaining source of why we're Palauans.
Ann Singeo, conservationist, Ebiil Society, Inc.: There's a huge offshore fishery that the current fishermen participate in. My husband is one of those people. So he sells it to the hotels. He sells it to the restaurants. We eat it at home. But there's less and less of the fish available in those areas where they're doing offshore fishing. And eventually, if we don't do anything about it, it doesn't get any better—it gets worse.
Erik Vereen: I used to dive ten years ago, and I've noticed a decline in all the fish that we see. But with this marine sanctuary coming—if it is created—our dive sites will be the best in the world.
Yimnang Golbuu, Ph.D., CEO, Palau International Coral Reef Center: We can always argue that we still have a lot, but we have to take action, and we have to take action now, while there are still fish in the water. If you wait until there're no fish, nothing we can do will matter anyway.
Tommy Remengesau, Jr.: I remember my father whacking me across the head with a bamboo pole, because I had caught too much fish. His message to me that day was that, Son, we never should take more than what we need. Think about tomorrow. Don't think just about today.
That's an ocean lesson that I hope everyone will take to heart these days, because we really need to do something serious about the ocean. Life cannot go at the same pace or at the same rate of harvesting the ocean's resources without doing something to regenerate, to repopulate, to rebalance what nature has to offer us.
So the next best thing for us to do is to ensure that at least our children, when they grow up, they'll get a taste of what it is to be an island fisherman, to be content on the ocean.

Palau, a small island in the Pacific, faces a tough task of protecting the waters under its jurisdiction. The film is summarises the commercial fishing situation in Palau and the its option for guarding its exclusive economic zone if the plans for a National Marine Sanctuary come about. The video's author mainly interviewed Alan Wilmore who is the commanding officer for the existing Australian Navy's patrol vessel. Over the last 18 months, he has been intrisic in advising Palau's President in the current limitations and possible alternatives to patrolling its waters. The film is also a short summary of the various technologies available to Palau and other island nations to help combat illegal fishing, those tested so far and those considered as possibilities together with an experts appraisal of them. Like many of the technologies, it was first developed for the military. -

HAWAII’S TOP TEN INVASIVE SPECIES HIGHLIGHTED DURING ANNUAL WEEK
HISAW-Invasive Species-Strawberry Guava is one of the Top 10 Invasives
Little fire ants, coconut rhinoceros beetles, albizia trees, rats, mongoose, strawberry guava, coqui frogs, miconia, fireweed and invasive algae all share one common trait. As invasive species, they provide examples of some of the worst offenders among the many plants and animals that pose what the state legislature has declared as “the single greatest threat to Hawaii’s economy, natural environment and to the health and lifestyle of Hawaii’s people.” Hawaii’s isolation has made our island state home to more invasive species than anywhere else in the U.S.
During the 3rd annual Hawaii Invasive Species Awareness Week (HISAW), the Hawaii Invasive Species Council (HISC) and the state agencies charged with combatting and controlling invasive species, will again share information and engage people across the state to raise awareness about the part everyone can play to help eliminate these pests from our land and the ocean. The message is “Invasive Species are Everyone’s Kuleana.”
The Hawaii Dept. of Agriculture (DOA) and the Dept. of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) co-chair the Hawaii Invasive Species Council with member agencies including the Dept. of Health (DOH), the Dept. of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT), the Dept. of Transportation (DOT), and the University of Hawaii. This interdepartmental collaboration was authorized by the state legislature in 2003 and includes participation and counsel from state senators and representatives, additional State agencies, county mayors, and federal agency representatives.
“Representation from such a broad and diverse group of agencies and individuals is not only symbolic of our commitment to protect Hawaii from invasive species, but in practicality provides a strong framework for interagency coordination,” said Scott Enright, the chairperson of the Hawaii Dept. of Agriculture. “Invasive species don’t recognize boundaries in their movements, so we can’t afford to have bureaucratic boundaries or limitations that slow down or diminish our responses to controlling them,” Enright added.
MORE
According to Carty Chang, interim DLNR chairperson, “The HISC aims to maintain a comprehensive overview of issues and implementation of state-wide invasive species prevention, and an early detection and control program for terrestrial and aquatic invaders. The focus is on programmatic and capacity shortfalls not currently addressed by state agencies. It is hoped that the HISC-funded projects will be a testing ground for new methods and capacity to address invasive species; that over time will be adopted permanently by agencies, freeing up HISC resources to further promote innovation and address gaps in the overall effort to effectively manage invasive species.”
Over the past year the environmental impacts of invasive species like the little fire ant (LFA) and coconut rhinoceros beetle (CRB) have captured headlines numerous times, as they’ve spread from one island to another and from one tree or pile of wood to another. The damage these and other invasive species exact on native terrestrial and aquatic species, on people, pets, and livestock is incalculable both from an ecosystem standpoint and from an economic standpoint.
Hawaii’s Invasive Species Week is being staged in coordination with both the U.S. National Invasive Species Week (NISAW) and a number of regional Pacific invasive species awareness efforts in Palau and Samoa. This is another sign of how seriously invasive species are being addressed locally, regionally and nationally. HISAW concludes with Invasive Species Awareness Day at the State Capitol on March 2, 2015. During ceremonies that day the HISC will present its 3rd Annual HISC Awards to a community hero, a business leader, and the greatest hit of 2014.

While French Polynesia is coping with the after effects of French nuclear testing, another corner of the Pacific is facing a different kind of fallout from its colonial past
The end of the Cold War has left the Federated States of Micronesia facing a drastic reduction in its economic base as the U-S ends decades of budget support -- part of a deal which has allowed the U-S military access to the region.
In response, Micronesia is holding the largest summit in its history in an attempt to face the coming crunch head on.
This is the island paradise of Micronesia -- a federation of 607 Pacific islands scattered across one thousand miles, home to about 100,000 people.
The name means "little islands". It's a classic tropical paradise: sun, palm trees and the ocean lapping the shore.
But some classic third world problems exist here too, as the local islanders appear adrift in a changing world.
In Micronesia, which has been a trust territory of the U-S for more than 40 years, the effect of U-S dollars has taken a toll.
After the Second World War, the U-S was given a mandate to administer the islands as a trust territory, giving them authority to set up military facilities.
Such was the extent of the US military presence that until the early 1960s civilians required a security clearance to travel here.
The islands gained independence in 1979. In 1986 the U-S agreed to provide more than a billion U-S dollars over 15 years for continued access.
But the money has created an artificial economy, based on imported goods. The U-S dollar is Micronesia's official currency.
Since funds flow directly to the government, the public sector accounts for 80 per cent of the gross national product.
Despite huge public sector investment, there's been little to show save no economic growth. This once self-sufficient country of farmers and fishermen is now dependent on imports.
But it's questionable as to whether the U-S will extend the agreement, known as the Compact, now that the Cold War is over.
Funds are already being cut back and analysts say by the year 2001, funding may dry up altogether.
SOUNDBITE:
"Naturally we have created a dependency because over a 15-year period we will be giving the F-S-M 1.2 billion dollars. So naturally there will be a dependency created, by this country expecting this much money to operate. But I think we have to look at it this way: it's a mutual dependency. They depend on our money, our help, our technical assistance, but we depend on them to use this money to become a truly independent nation."
SUPER CAPTION: March Fong Eu, U-S Ambassador
There is hope here. Ever since the country achieved independence, determined government policy-makers have been preparing for the difficult transition.
Evidence of the gravity of their concern: the largest ever Summit is being held. The subject: economic reform.
The country's president, Bailey Olter, is an active participant.
The U-S ambassador to Micronesia is attending, as well as elected officials, businessmen and traditional leaders from across the archipelago.
Asterio Takesy has been with his government since independence and is currently the country's Secretary of External Affairs.
He says the massive economic exercise is a way of looking forward.
SOUNDBITE:
"This is a national self-examination of our economic policies, of our performance economically as we are nearly halfway through the Compact. And it is not an examination anticipating the end of the Compact, rather including the end of the Compact. Life
beyond the Compact."
SUPER CAPTION: Asterio Takesy, Secretary of External Affairs, Micronesia
The summit ends Monday (27 November).

25 Things to do in Barcelona, Spain | Top Attractions Travel Guide Video Transcript:
This week we are exploring another Spanish city. We are in Barcelona and this video is going to highlight 25 things to do here.
It is kind of hard to believe our time in Barcelona has expired. So final thoughts.
Well, it was a really fun city to visit. Great architecture, really nice beaches. It is very lively especially at night. The only downfall is that we were here in the middle of summer so it was super hot and super crowded and sometimes that made it a little bit difficult to enjoy. Especially at midday or in the mid-afternoon. So keep that in mind. Maybe consider visiting in the springtime, fall, winter.
Well, so what did you think of the city?
It is definitely a fun city. We had a lot of fun going to the beaches. One thing that is really different about this city compared to some other European cities though is that it is really spread out. In order for us to visit all of these different attractions we had to chunk them together into groups to visit them day by day. Overall, it was a decent city. It didn't quite click with me the same way that Madrid did. But that is just personal preference I suppose.
And that is a wrap for Barcelona! Our 5 days in the city flew by, and while this guide didn't cover everything, we hope we were able to give you a feel of what this fun seaside city has to offer. As always, if you have any suggestions of things to do around town, feel free to add them in the comments below. And if you want to catch our latest travel videos, don't forget to hit subscribe!
This is part of our Travel in Spain series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Spanish culture, Spanish arts, Spanish foods, Spanish religion, Spanish cuisine and Spanish people.

Valencia’s story begins around 960 with the Muslim Caliphate of Cordoba. But its history goes back even further with documented history of over 2,000 years, having been founded by the Romans around 140 B.C. In the 8th century the Moors absorbed Valencia, ruling for the next five centuries, with a brief Christian interlude in the 1090s.
Valencia’s Moorish era brought a rich period of growth in agriculture, arts, and science, laying the foundation for the city’s expansion and development for centuries.
Valencia wears its history on its architectural sleeve. Its Roman, Muslim, and early Christian past is all over, as well as its Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque city at heart. With such a rich and varied history, Valencia is a fascinating mix of cultures.
Valencia is well-located, with fantastic communications links to the rest of Europe. France and the ski-slopes of tiny, tax-free Andorra are under a five-hour drive and the rock of Gibraltar is also within easy reach.
Life in Spain is timed to fit around food and eating. The pace of life is governed by natural phenomena such as the sun and mealtimes. Food is an important part of culture here, and Valencia is known as the Orange Blossom Coast due to its extensive citrus groves.
With an average temperature of around 70°F year round, Valencia has perfect weather conditions for an active, healthy and varied lifestyle. This part of the Western Mediterranean has some of the finest beaches in southern Europe. The mountains are within easy reach and the Valencian Community offers excursions to national parks and other sites of historical and cultural interest.
To get a good sense of Valencian culture, go watch some Flamenco. This is something you should do at least once. It costs around 38 euros each, including a full dinner of several courses with a pitcher of Sangria or beer and the show.
Valencia offers theater-goers, music-lovers, and culture-vultures a plethora of variety and venues, from the Berklee affiliated Palau de la Musica (the Palace of Music) where you can hear world class jazz, to hip clubs and live-music bars.
The Valencian community is famous for its highly individualistic festivals and celebrations and many local and religious events. Museums and other cultural and historic attractions here are free or cost just a euro or two. An all-day museum pass costs 6 euros. A round of golf at any of several Valencia golf clubs costs anywhere between 30 to 75 euros.
There has been a large growth in the foreign population over the last decade, with Romanians, Bolivians, Ecuadoreans, Colombians, and Moroccans turning Valencia into a cosmopolitan city. According to the Sociedad Americano, there are 1,500 U.S. citizens officially resident in Valencia; however, it is thought that many more aren’t actually registered.
Valencia has been overlooked as a serious contender for retirement or investment, but it enjoys a wonderful climate, vibrant lifestyle, and great location and communications to the rest of Europe, on top of a highly affordable cost of living.

Featuring a mix of both Palauan and English, “Moungil” is a special message for Palauan youth about underage drinking. This video was produced through the SAMHSA/CSAP Underage Drinking Prevention Education Initiatives (UADPEI) in an ongoing collaboration with States and Territories to produce videos that support local underage drinking prevention communications efforts. Across the Nation, every State and Territory is unique and so are their approaches to preventing and reducing underage drinking. The video project supports the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Strategic Initiative #1: Prevention of Substance Abuse and Mental Illness, which states, "... prevention of underage drinking [is] a priority for States, Territories, Tribal entities, universities and communities."

Spawning aggregations are massive gatherings of fish for breeding, a behavior shared by many species across the globe in many different habitats. Spawning aggregations support some of the most productive fisheries: from multibillion-dollar industries to subsistence cultures, yet we are only beginning to understand their value for marine ecosystems and food security, and their vulnerability. In the upper Gulf of California, in Mexico, a large marine fish known as Gulf Corvina offers an insight into the importance of this behavior.

The Palau National Communication Corporation (PNCC) through board member Governor Leilani Reklai have entered into an agreement with the Chunghwa Telecom to upgrade PNCC's current networks of 2G to a 3G system.
This upgrade once implemented would allow PNCC to provide additional services such as mobile photo and video sharing, mobile Internet use, improved Wi-Fi speed and mobile TV.
The memorandum of renewed cooperation and understanding also revitalizes the relationship between both corporations, who have cooperated closely to improve and develop Palau's telecommunication services since 2007.
In August, PNCC entered into an agreement with 03b Networks to increase Palau's bandwidth and capability as well as reduce latency, an agreement that Press Secretary KB Sakuma says would allow for the upgrade of PNCC's network and for the implementation of the Health Cloud System.

This place is so surreal, you guys. H is Palau. The iconic arch is natural. Inside these islands, to many mysteries. Unlike anywhere in the world. ? majestic. Magical. Mysterious. A swirling color palette of blue waters teaming with marine life. Good morning, America. Welcome to Palau. A string of over 300 tiny green islands in the pacific. Time stopped when these Georges islands took shape at the end of the last ice age. Gifting us with one of the most fascinating places on the planet. This tiny island nation is an underwater utopia with the world's largest shark sanctuary. And my friends here. A 400-pound Napoleon. Palau is home to a fluke of nature called jelly fish lake. I'm about to find out why. A 45-minute boat ride. Now we're going to hike 20 minutes to jelly fish lake. The hike takes us to the other side of the tree tops. Welcome to jelly fish trail. Definitely humid. Everything we need, cameras and gear, our crew, and my local guide Jake, carried through the roads. He's carrying all the gear. And without shoes. Is there these are my working shoes. Reporter: A few more steps and there it is. Oh, yeah, we're getting into it now. As we swim out, I spot a few. And then, boom. Jelly fish nation. Oh, my god. There's so many. Like floating through a living lava lamp. 20 million swirling globes of golden marshmallow puffs. But get this. The miraculous thing about these jelly fish? They don't sting. Lack of predators not only has caused them on multiply buzz has caused them to lose their stinging cells. Reporter: Oh, my gosh. So cool. This sun believable. It really is. So special. But the truth is, whether you come to Palau to snorkel at this sunken ship turned barrier reef, scuba dive with the sharks and napoleons, or swim with the jelly fish, just being in this place, witnessing the wonder of nature, will make you feel like a kid again. Wow, that was special. That was Palau. Now I can't wait to show you where we take you next. 1800 nautical miles west. Stick around. That's on her way to what she's going to show us. Is there that was just a pit stop. Life in a lava lamp. I love that. To be able to go through the jelly fish and trust. We should say they're not totally stingless, they retain some stinging cells. Scientists advise you not to kiss them, by the way. Thank you for that. That would have been my first up stipgt. Ginger, we love you. Bring us more.

Helen Reef is an atoll located about 330 mi south of its mother country, Palau in the western Pacific, and about 220 mi north of Sorong, Indonesia.
It consists of a ringing reef with lagoon, a major deep-water pass, and on the north side, one tiny island of sand and a few trees. All of Helen Reef is a protected conservation area rich in marine life, in and out of the water.
We were lucky to have a chance to visit this isolated area while on route to Palau from Indonesia. Some technical issues, and a forecast for bad weather coming prompted us to stop here. The friendly rangers greeted us after we were safely tied to the conservation area’s mooring. We visited the rustic ranger station on the tiny sand spit of an island. We found them pretty self-sufficient, and resourceful. The island is a bird sanctuary and a nesting ground for hundreds and hundreds of birds squawking day and nite. The rangers tape off the area at the beginning of laying, but later, visitors can walk the length of the island and marvel in the sheer numbers and the beauty of their graceful flight.
During our visit, the Rangers, Louis, Jamos and Matthew, showed us a number of their duties for the Conservation area, and they took us to a number of important sites on the reef. Every day they check-in with the main office in Palau, and file a report. They patrol Illegal fishing activity on the reef, greet visitors, monitor the bird nesting, turtle egg laying, and the Giant Clam farm. They maintain the navigation and mooring buoys as well.
We were able to scuba dive at 3 sites, and record some of the rich marine life of the reef. At the old Japanese cargo shipwreck, only anchors and a few shards of pottery are left, but the reef is pretty with several white-tip lagoon sharks cruising the dramatic drop-off. One dive in the inner lagoon on one of the branches of the pass had the most gigantic lettuce leaf coral formation we’d ever seen. The dive in the Pass was action-packed; we were spinning our necks in every direction, not knowing what to look at next! All the sharks, schools of jacks, rainbow runners, barracudas, the giant grouper, turtle, and the rare and beautiful manta ray, were all seen during one dive!
Visiting the Giant Clam farm was inspiring, we’ve visited other Giant Clam farms, but they are usually instituted after the population has been depleted; at Helen Reef, they are everywhere in every size and every incredible color, and we saw them all over the reef system, not just in the farm area. We were happy to see this easily exploited mollusk protected and allowed to grow to its normal gigantic size.
We thank Jamos and his wife, Samdrina, Louis, and Matthew, the staff who manned the Helen Reef Ranger Station while we were there, for their wonderful hospitality, and for taking us around the reef, and for the fun filming sessions. Filmed in November 2014.

Big Wave Surfing world record
Garrett McNamara Surfline TV Greatest Wipeouts
Garrett McNamara: World's Biggest Wave Off the Coast of Portugal 2013
The Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara is said to have broken his own world record for the largest wave surfed when he caught a wave reported to be around 100ft off the coast of Nazaré, Portugal. If the claims are verified, it will mean that McNamara, who was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts but whose family moved to Hawaii's North Shore when he was aged 11, has beaten his previous record, which was also set at Nazaré.
When McNamara set that record in 2011, he was accompanied by fellow big-wave surfers Andrew Cotton and Alastair Mennie and at the time Mennie said that the conditions were "perfect" for McNamara whom he described as "inspiring".
"Everything was perfect, the weather, the waves," Mennie said. "Cotty and I surfed two big waves of about 60ft and then, when Garrett was ready came a canyon wave of over 90ft. The jet ski was the best place to see him riding the biggest wave I've ever seen. It was amazing. Most people would be scared but Garrett was controlling everything in the critical part of the wave. It was an inspiring ride by an inspiring surfer."
Speaking to the Observer in 2011 after his record-setting 90ft ride, McNamara explained: "We'd been invited by the government of Portugal to Nazaré to investigate it for a big wave competition. There is an underwater canyon 1,000ft deep that runs from the ocean right up to the cliffs. It's like a funnel. At its ocean end it's three miles wide but narrows as it gets closer to the shore and when there is a big swell it acts like an amplifier.
"The harbour where the jetskis are kept is about five minutes' ride away. I can see it from my hotel window. You go out and it can be almost flat as you leave and ride along the coast. You start seeing the waves after about half a mile when you pass some rocks and turn a point. Then you are in the break. It's unique. The waves break into cliffs 300ft in height. You can't contemplate coming off because it would kill you."

This video for Langkawi is one of our older productions, but we wanted to share it with you to get some feedback on how these older clips compare to the more recent travel guides we’ve shot. Below are some links to those recent videos. Feel free to compare with this clip and comment below to let us know which ones you prefer, and what else you’d love to see from Expedia on YouTube!

Langkawi has long been called the Permata Kedah, or the Jewel of Kedah. Once you arrive at the northwestern part of Peninsular Malaysia, you’ll find out why this glittering green archipelago has that nickname. Langkawi was named a World Geopark in 2007, and its lush forests and clear blue waters are a steady draw for millions of visitors. Pulau Langkawi is the largest island in the Langkawi chain, and has become a popular spot for travelers from all over Asia and the rest of the world.
Langkawi sightseeing is bound to include something for everyone. Do you want to relax all day in a hammock? You can do that here. Ready to greet the local sea life? Dive into the crystal clear waters of Palau Payar Marine Park, where you can snorkel or scuba dive through the colorful masses of tropical fish that inhabit the reefs there. If you prefer dry land, tour Langkawi’s lush green jungles, which adorn the peak of Gunung Mat Chinchang. You can take a guided tour, or ride the Langkawi Cable Car up to the top of this peak to take in the stunning natural beauty of the island.
Once you’ve gotten your fill of the outdoors, head to Kuah, the largest town on Pulau Langkawi. This is the home of duty-free shopping, so stock up on exotic local goods. Once you’ve decked yourself out in your new purchases, head to one of the many nightclubs dotting the downtown area, where you can dance with fellow partygoers.
