Established as a homeland for India’s Muslims in 1947, Pakistan has had a tumultuous history that has unfolded in the vortex of dire regional and international conflicts. Beset by assassinations, coups, ethnic strife, and the breakaway of Bangladesh in 1971, the country has found itself too often contending with religious extremism and military authoritarianism. Now, in a probing biography of her native land amid the throes of global change, Ayesha Jalal provides an insider’s assessment of how this nuclear-armed Muslim nation evolved as it did and explains why its dilemmas weigh so heavily on prospects for peace in the region.
Attentive to Pakistan’s external relations as well as its internal dynamics, Jalal shows how the vexed relationship with the United States, border disputes with Afghanistan in the west, and the conflict with India over Kashmir in the east have played into the hands of the generals who purchased security at the cost of strong democratic institutions. Combined with domestic ethnic and regional rivalries, such pressures have created a siege mentality that encourages military domination and militant extremism.
Since 9/11, the country has been widely portrayed as a breeding ground for Islamic terrorism. Assessing the threats posed by Al-Qaeda and the Taliban as American troops withdraw from Afghanistan, Jalal contends that the battle for Pakistan’s soul is far from over. Her definitive biography reveals how pluralism and democracy continue to struggle for a place in this Muslim homeland, where they are so essential to its future.

Ayesha Jalal, one of the most respected Pakistani historians, speaks on India-Pakistan relations. An interesting video with her interesting take on South Asian notion of 'sovereignty'. This lecture was conducted by South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA). Those who are regular watchers of Zaid Hamid comedy would immediately recognize that these SAFMA people are the ones who are often branded as traitors and Indian agents by right wing Pakistani media.
By the way, she is the grandniece of the renowned Urdu fiction writer Saadat Hasan Manto. And she is married to Sugata Bose, a Hindu from India and the grandnephew of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and grandson of nationalist leader Sarat Chandra Bose. He is also her research partner. Together, they have written a book called Modern South Asia which is the first South Asian history book that has been written in joint collaboration between a Pakistani and an Indian.

Ayesha Jalal (Urdu: عائشہ جلال) is a Pakistani-American sociologist and historian. She is the Mary Richardson Professor of History at Tufts University and a 1998 MacArthur Fellow. The bulk of her work deals with the creation of Muslim identities in modern South Asia.
Ayesha Jalal was born in Lahore in Pakistan to Hamid Jalal, a senior Pakistani civil servant, a niece of the renowned Urdu fiction writer Saadat Hasan Manto . She came to New York at the age of 16 when her father was posted at the United Nations. She is married to Indian historian Sugata Bose who teaches at Harvard.
She obtained her BA, majoring in History and Political Science, from Wellesley College, USA, and her doctorate in history from Trinity College at University of Cambridge, where she wrote her Ph.D. dissertation: 'Jinnah, the Muslim League and the Demand for Pakistan'.
Ayesha Jalal has been Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge (1980–84), Leverhulme Fellow at the Center of South Asian Studies, Cambridge (1984–87), Fellow of the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars in Washington, DC (1985–86) and Academy Scholar at the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies(1988–90). She has taught at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Tufts University, Columbia University, Harvard University and Lahore University of Management Sciences.

Established as a homeland for India’s Muslims in 1947, Pakistan has had a tumultuous history that has unfolded in the vortex of dire regional and international conflicts. Beset by assassinations, coups, ethnic strife, and the breakaway of Bangladesh in 1971, the country has found itself too often contending with religious extremism and military authoritarianism. Now, in a probing biography of her native land amid the throes of global change, Ayesha Jalal provides an insider’s assessment of how this nuclear-armed Muslim nation evolved as it did and explains why its dilemmas weigh so heavily on prospects for peace in the region.
Attentive to Pakistan’s external relations as well as its internal dynamics, Jalal shows how the vexed relationship with the United States, border disputes with Afghanistan in the west, and the conflict with India over Kashmir in the east have played into the hands of the generals who purchased security at the cost of strong democratic institutions. Combined with domestic ethnic and regional rivalries, such pressures have created a siege mentality that encourages military domination and militant extremism.

Ayesha Jalal, one of the most respected Pakistani historians, speaks on India-Pakistan relations. An interesting video with her interesting take on South Asian notion of 'sovereignty'. This lecture was conducted by South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA). Those who are regular watchers of Zaid Hamid comedy would immediately recognize that these SAFMA people are the ones who are often branded as traitors and Indian agents by right wing Pakistani media.
By the way, she is the grandniece of the renowned Urdu fiction writer Saadat Hasan Manto. And she is married to Sugata Bose, a Hindu from India and the grandnephew of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and grandson of nationalist leader Sarat Chandra Bose. He is also her research partner. Together, they have written a book called Modern South Asia which is the first South Asian history book that has been written in joint collaboration between a Pakistani and an Indian.

Synopsis - Raj Chaudhary attends college and works part-time at Kartar Singh's garage to earn a living, here is where he learns different arts how to design fustic engines and cars. One day while returning home from college, Raj passes by a junk yard, saw a wrecked car and took a liking to it, brought it and bring it home. Raj spent hours and hours designing the wreck and eventually restores it to a car, with the latest technology systems, makes it look new and shiny. He decides to call this new car "Tarzan". Unknown to Raj that this new car will turn his life upside down of having the worst nightmare in being implicated for a number of innocent lives taken and put him in the bad books of the police.
