Ancient History Documentary: The Secrets of the Aegean Apocalypse
This ancient history documentary, the Secrets of the Aegean Apocalypse, is about an ancient epic destruction that seems to have ended the Bronze Age.
Around 1,200 BC, during the Bronze Age, an ancient Armageddon destroyed nearly every known civilization. Although it was predicted thousands of years ago, no one saw it coming. This was the disaster that was mentioned in Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey and in the Old Testament. What could have caused this epic destruction?
One archaeologist has dedicated his life to following clues rediscovering the ancient pathways that lead up the sheer cliffs of the Aegean. He follows the footsteps of the survivors hoping to discover how and why their world collapsed.
The theories are many, but most now include one mysterious and massively destructive factor - a force only the Egyptians survived to name: The Sea People.
Who were these warriors and how could they take down the world's greatest powers in a span of just 50 years?
Scale the dizzying heights of Crete's mountain fortress with archaeologist Krzysztof Nowicki as he searches for clues.

Fishermen Save Syrian Baby and 15 Other Refugees From Aegean Sea After Boat Sinks
Sixteen Syrian refugees, including an 18-month-old boy, were rescued by Turkish fishermen on Friday after their boat capsized and sank in the Aegean Sea off the coast of Kusadasi near Izmir in Turkey.
Fisherman Cenal Gurman, 48, told a Turkish media outlet that he nearly missed the 18-month-old baby -- later identified as Muhammed -- had he not gone back to check if there were any more survivors after sighting and rescuing the 15 other refugees in life jackets.
He said that when he went back out to check and also collect other life jackets littering the sea, he saw the toddler.
"It must have been in the water for a long time," Gurman said. "I got to it and pulled it out. It was a boy, and he was suffering from hypothermia."
Video of the dramatic rescue shows baby Muhammed unresponsive as Gurman flips him upside down to "get rid of the water in his lungs and stomach," he said.
The 18-month-old survived, and Gurman covered him in a blanket before handing him over to the Turkish Coast Guard, who came to assist with the refugees.
Muhammed was immediately taken to the hospital and was discharged in a few hours.
"I am so happy we saved 16 lives," Gurman said. "We hope this never happens again."
Turkish media also caught Muhammed's reunion with his family on the boat, including his mother, Lorin Halef.
Halef, 23, told reporters the family was from Kobane, Syria, and they plan to return there after this experience, adding that she would never again try to go back to Europe.
The boat that sank reportedly also carried 15 other passengers, but they were not found.

Real GIANT SKELETON found in LOST CITY OF ATLANTIS?!
A team of American maritime archaeologists have reportedly located a 14 foot long giant human skeleton among ancient ruins in the Aegean Sea, some 220 km south-east of Greece.
This general location – near the island of Santorini – has of course long been considered as a possible resting place for the legendary sunken island of Atlantis.
Could it be… that Atlantis was a city of giants?
Is this finally irrefutable proof for the existence of giant peoples on Earth?
…And, AND, have we also found the famous Lost City of Alantis, under the Aegean Sea!?
What an absolutely incredible pair of discoveries!
We thank you all very much for participating in this remarkable event – a celebration of history, science and discovery,
Mr. Lionel J. Theodore

The Cyclades are the small group of islands surrounding Delos int the middle of the Aegean Sea. On these islands the Cycladic culture thrived well before B.C. what, beside the architectural and artistic values, also meant a lifestyle. This lifestyle is sought by the millions of visiting tourists: the narrow, winding alleys, the many characteristic Cycladic houses protected from the sun by venetian blinds and ornamented by geranium and leander. From the taverns resting in the shade of vine-arbours one can see the boats and yachts floating on the sea. The wind from the sea slowly turns the wheels of the windmills, while the beaches are full of happy people.

Rhodes is the largest island of the Dodecanese, a group of Greek islands located in the southeast of the Aegean Sea just off the west coast of Turkey. Since antiquity its unique location has brought it both power and wealth. On the northernmost tip of the island is the fascinating metropolis of Chora Rodos whose harbor entrance was once adorned by the Seventh Wonder of The World, the Colossus of Rhodes. But the legendary lighthouse has long since gone and today, excursion boats and yachts crowd the island’s former trading harbor that has a rich and dramatic past.Byzantines, Arabs, The Knights of the Order of St. John, Ottomans and Italians, each one influenced the ever-changing history of the island that was first settled in 400 B.C.At the city’s highest point is the huge palace of the Grand Master, the monumental junction of the Street of the Knights and the command post of the Christian order. The Grand Master was the highest dignitary of the Order of the Knights of Malta, a lifetime office. The Street of the Knights leads from the Palace of the Grand Master down the hill to the Hospital, a unique ensemble of Gothic medieval architecture set amid the Mediterranean. Although Greece is the home of ancient gods, birthplace of European civilisation and a country of great warriors and philosophers it is also a country of many islands with tiny villages and white houses, a deep blue sea and almost constant sunshine.Athens is a lively city set in historic surroundings. Unique among all other Greek temples is the Acropolis whose imposing appearance and artistic decoration signified the great influence and power of ancient Athens. Six female figures, the Karyatides, support the southern hall of the Ionic Temple of Erechtheion that stands on sacred ground close to the main temple. The imposing Mitrópolis is the main Greek Orthodox cathedral in Athens. A total of four architects designed this cathedral whose walls comprise the remains of no less than seventy former sacred buildings. The Cyclades Islands are situated in the middle of the Southern Aegean that like a magic circle flows around its former centre, the sacred island of Delos, Mykonos. For centuries this picturesque former pirate village in the middle of Cyclades group of islands has been the meeting place for artists, V.I.P.’s and the international glitterati. The Cyclades are also known as The Pearls Of Greece and it seems as though the gods have scattered a handful of beautiful pearls into the deep blue Aegean Sea. In ancient times they were also known as The Islands Of Light because Apollo, the God of Light and Learning, was born here and also worshipped on the islands. Santorini is the most southerly of the Cyclades Islands and the legendary location of the mythical lost island of Atlantis and also a breathtaking island paradise of rock, lava, sea and light.Crete is the ‘Island Of Light’ and the birthplace of Zeus. Heraklion is the capital of the largest and most southerly of the Greek islands on which a highly developed culture has existed for four thousand years. It’s no wonder that in these magnificent islands in the Aegean numerous gods, knights and tourists have always found much good fortune and enchantment!

Welcome to Oia, Greece, a small community residing on the northernmost tip of Santorini. While it’s now a relaxing holiday getaway for visitors from all over the world, this sleepy Aegean town, perched on the clifftops around a former volcanic caldera, once boasted a powerful merchant fleet.
Any tour of Oia allows you to see the remains of some of this power scattered throughout town. A number of captains’ houses, built in the 1800s, are positioned near the top of the caldera and feature commanding views of the town and the turquoise Aegean Sea. One of these mansions has been restored and repurposed as the Naval Maritime Museum, inviting you to stop by during your Oia sightseeing. While there, you’ll learn about the history of seafaring in the area. Check out the figureheads, old charts, antique equipment, and stunning architecture that features vaulted ceilings and terraced rooftops.
Oia tourism leans heavily on rest and relaxation. Many visiting artists were taken with the beautiful natural scenery and ended up moving to the island. As a result, Oia has a number of art galleries. Wander through the village’s narrow streets, stroll in and out of those galleries, and meander to a café overlooking the sea where you can continue to relax. You’ll realize exactly why these creative folks fell so deeply in love with Oia.
When you’re ready to bid the sun farewell, you’ll have a lot of company. Sunset is a big deal in this small community, and you’ll make new friends when you gather on Oia’s many viewing platforms to watch this spectacular event.

The characteristic white-walled buildings of Santorini are standing upon each other in a happy disorder. The narrow alleys show us a new miracle at each turn. The top of our house is the other house’s balcony, from where there is a perfect view on the dark blue water of the Aegean Sea. The venetian blinds summon the color of the blue sky, the rows of cubic houses are sometimes broken by a blue-domed temple or a windmill. The balconies are full of geranium. The smell of gyros is in the air, from the cafes we hear the bouzouki, and the sight of the sunset from the taverns is unforgettable. The sun is scorching, one can smell the salty air and hear the seagulls, while down below the white boats sail towards their unknown destination.

Santorini (Greek: Σαντορίνη, pronounced [sandoˈrini]), classically
Thera (English pronunciation /ˈθɪərə/), and officially Thira
(Greek: Θήρα [ˈθira]), is an island in the southern Aegean Sea,
about 200 km (120 mi) southeast of Greece's mainland. It is
the largest island of a small, circular archipelago which bears
the same name and is the remnant of a volcanic caldera. It forms
the southernmost member of the Cyclades group of islands, with
an area of approximately 73 km2 (28 sq mi) and a 2011 census
population of 15,550. The municipality of Santorini comprises
the inhabited islands of Santorini and Therasia and the uninhabited islands of Nea Kameni, Palaia Kameni, Aspronisi, and Christiana. The total land area is 90.623 km2 (34.990 sq mi). Santorini is part of the Thira regional unit.
Santorini is essentially what remains after an enormous volcanic
eruption that destroyed the earliest settlements on a formerly
single island, and created the current geological caldera. A giant
central, rectangular lagoon, which measures about 12 by 7 km
(7.5 by 4.3 mi), is surrounded by 300 m (980 ft) high, steep cliffs
on three sides. The main island slopes downward to the Aegean Sea. On the fourth side, the lagoon is separated from the sea by another much smaller island called Therasia; the lagoon is connected to the sea in two places, in the northwest and southwest. The depth of the caldera, at 400m, makes it possible for all but the largest ships to anchor anywhere in the protected bay; there is also a newly built marina at Vlychada, on the southwestern coast. The island's principal port is Athinias. The capital, Fira, clings to the top of the cliff looking down on the lagoon. The volcanic rocks present from the prior eruptions
feature olivine and have a small presence of hornblende.

Travel video about destination Dodecanese in Turkey.
Dodecanese is the name of a group of Greek islands that is located in the southeast of the Aegean Sea just off the Turkish coast. It warrants more than its name of ‘Twelve Islands’, as it contains more than 19 inhabited and around 50 small uninhabited islands.Kos is the green pearl of the Aegean, a historic oasis beneath the Greek sun. Not the largest of the Dodecanese Islands but certainly one of its most fascinating. The capital of the island is Chora Kos. Following their arrival from Jerusalem in the 14th century, the Order of the Knights of Malta built a huge fortified complex in the town. The city’s spacious square is surrounded by numerous buildings plus a museum. There are stone busts and statues of the Roman and Hellenistic eras that offer a good insight into the imaginative culture of a golden age. In the square, a number of steps lead up to the city’s cathedral, the Agia Paraskevi. Not a large structure but extremely modern and well located in the centre of the town.Only four kilometres from the city, high in the Dikeos Mountains is one of the island’s most important sights, the asklepieion, an ancient hospital and sanctuary. It was here that the Greeks worshipped the god of medicine who was later named Askulap by the Romans.Rhodes was one of the most important cities in antiquity and fended off attack due to its impressively tall defensive walls. The mighty-looking fortification was in reality a deception, as it was far from sturdy but its many defensive towers and pinnacles had their desired effect.Lindos is the most beautiful village in Rhodes with Paulus Bay and an acropolis that is located high above the sea.It was here that the sun was born and where the gods, knights and tourists have always sought good fortune and been captivated with the enchanting islands of the Dodecanese.

This video accompanies Greentraveller’s online guide to the beautiful islands of Lesvos and Chios, which features over 50 recommendations for where to stay, eat and what to do on the two islands.
Written and researched by professional travel writer Sian Lewis, the guide focuses on some of the top places to stay, from easygoing family hotels on the edge of the Aegean Sea to fairytale stone cottages.
The Guide features some of the best spots to find local seasonal food, such as bright Greek salads, fresh-off-the-boat fish and tasty meat dishes, served with glasses of cloudy ouzo and strong coffee.
The Guide also encourages readers to explore these ancient islands, where Homer and Sappho wrote verses, where the Genovese, Byzantine and Ottoman styles have influenced the architecture, and where its easy to step back in time, from the magical, wisteria-covered streets of Molyvos on Lesvos to Chios' medieval walled villages.

Greece is the cradle of the European civilization, a quarry of mythology and ancient relics. On the Chalkidiki Peninsula we can visit the city of Thessalonica, the beaches of Katerini and Paralia, and from the boat we can take a look at the mystical monastery republic, Athos. Near the legendary Olympus Mountain we can take a look at the ‘rocks of gods’, the Meteora monasteries built on the sky-high cliffs. Athens’s well known building is the Acropolis, which is garlanded by the golden pillars of the Parthenon. The Agora was the marketplace of the ancient Athens, while the Plaka is a current, full of life eastern bazaar. From the capital the visitors can take journeys to the canal of Corinth and to the beaches of the Attican Riviera.
