This short clip gives an impression of this beautiful region. It was shot during a one week trip driving from Khorog through the Wakhan Valley, onto Murgab in Eastern Tajikistan.

I volunteered to make the video for Pamir Adventure, a Tajik tour company run by Surat Toimastov. Surat was a biologist in the Soviet Union and did all of his field-work in the Pamirs. His knowledge of Gorno-Badakhshan is intimate and unparalleled.
If you are interested in visiting Tajikistan, I can not recommend Pamir Adventure highly enough.

On 9 September 2014, 8 cyclists from 4 different continents met near the Tajikistan-Kyrgyzstan border, just before Kyzyl-Art Pass.
The next day, upon reaching the 4,280m (14,042 ft) pass, they began to feel delirious. Suffering from severe altitude sickness, they burst into this tribute to the Pamirs.

The Pamir Mountains are a mountain range in Central Asia formed by the junction or knot of the Himalayas, Tian Shan, Karakoram, Kunlun, and Hindu Kush ranges. They are among the world’s highest mountains and since Victorian times they have been known as the "Roof of the World" a probable translation from the Persian.
In other languages they are called: Kyrgyz Памир тоолору; Persian: رشته کوه های پامیر Reshte Kūh-hāye Pāmīr; Tajik: Кӯҳҳои Помир; Pashto: د پامير غرونه; Uyghur: پامىر ئېگىزلىكى; Urdu: پامیر کوهستان; Hindi: पामीर पर्वतमाला; Chinese: 帕米尔高原; pinyin: Pàmǐ'ěr Gāoyuán. Another Chinese name is Congling (cōnglǐng 葱嶺) (Wade-Giles: Ts'ung-ling) or "Onion Range" (after the wild onions growing in the region).
The precise extent of the Pamir Mountains is debatable. They lie mostly in Gorno-Badakhshan province, Tajikistan and Badakshan Province, Afghanistan. To the north they join the Tian Shan mountains along the Alay Valley of Kyrgyzstan. To the south they join the Hindu Kush mountains along the Wakhan Corridor in Afghanistan/Pakistan, and also Gilgit–Baltistan in Pakistan. To the east they may end on the Chinese border or extend to the range that includes Kongur Tagh which is sometimes included in the Kunlun Mountains.

Trip to the autonomous region of Tajikistan, Gorno-Badakhshan. I traveled along the Tajik-Afghan border into the High Pamirs. We followed the Pamir Highway for long distances, making stops at historic sites and small villages.
I volunteered to make the video for Pamir Adventure, a Tajik tour company run by Surat Toimastov. Surat was a biologist in the Soviet Union and did all of his field-work in the Pamirs. His knowledge of Gorno-Badakhshan is intimate and unparalleled.
If you are interested in visiting Tajikistan, I can not recommend Pamir Adventure highly enough.

Lunch in camp and transfer to Tash Rabat caravanserai. Transfer via Moldo Ashuu pass and arrive to Naryn town, then proceed closer to the border with China.
Stop in Kara Koum canyon, near Tash Rabat caravanserai. Accommodation in yurt camp. Dinner and overnight.
Day 4
Tash Rabat caravanserai – Karakol town.
Long driving day. Transfer first to Kochkor village. Stop for a lunch. See famous souvenir shop museum and demonstration of producing felt.
Continue drive to Karakol town. Reach south shore of the Issyk Kul Lake and transfer along. Arrival to Karakol town. Accommodation in a hotel. Dinner and overnight.
Day 5
Karakol town – Karkara valley.
Early morning transfer to Karkara valley. Stop in Karkara tent camp and get helicopter excursion to South Inylchek glacier to the Khan Tengri base camp. That was our plan, because some rain and many clouds we had to skip the helicopter flight for that day and waiting for better weather.
Lunch and plenty of time to walk around Karkara valley, only 12m apart from the border to Kazakhstan. We even had a swim in the border river after our sauna.
Dinner and overnight in tents.
Day 6
Karkara valley – Khan Tengri base camp – Bishkek city.
The day started with wonderful sunshine and clear sky. So we were ready for our helicopter ride to South Inylchek glacier and Khan Tengri base camp.
Unexpected our helicopter broke down at the base camp and we were not able to leave. Lunch at South Inylchek glacier, Khan Tengri base camp.
After approx 5 hrs. waiting (doing some sightseeing and walk around at the base camp) a second helicopter arrived with all necessary tools for repairment. Meanwhile we took the second helicopter back to Karkara valley and even got a spezial VIP flight back to Bishkek.
Wonderful scenic flight across the north shore of the Issyk Kul Lake.
Evening arrival on Military airport transfer to downtown and accommodation in a hotel. Dinner and rest. – Well deserved!
Day 7
Bishkek city – airport. Flight to Osh city.
Full day in Bishkek city, sightseeing and shopping at the market.
Evening flight to Osh city. Arrival, transfer to hotel. Rest. Lunch and dinner in cafes..
Day 8
Osh city.
Full day city tour in Osh. Visit Osh Bazaar and it’s handicraft rows.
After visiting bazaar visit Sulaiman Mount. On the mount first you visit historical museum. Follow the way of all pilgrims up to the top of the hill where you watch a little mosque of Babur.
Dinner in a local café. Overnight in a hotel.
Day 9
Osh city – Achick Tash base camp.
In the morning we start visiting the cattle and horse market. Than we continue our route to Pamir mountain ridge.
Lunch en route.
Arrival to Achick Tash base camp. Accommodation in tents. Dinner and overnight in BC.
Day 10
Achick Tash BC – Osh city.
Transfer back to Osh city. Lunch en route.
Arrival to Osh.
Overnight in a hotel. Rest.
Day 11
Osh city – airport.
Early morning transfer to the airport. Flight back home via Istanbul.
Arrival back in Frankfurt early afternoon.

Bishkek city – Son Kul Lake.
Morning transfer to Son Kul Lake. En route visit Burana Tower Historical complex. Lunch in Kazakh family in Tokmok town.
Transfer to Son Kul. Arrival and accommodation in yurts. Inspection the camp and territory around.
Dinner and overnight in yurt camp.
Day 3
Son Kul Lake – Tash Rabat caravanserai.
Morning at leisure on Son Kul Lake. Walking around the area and still time for 2 hours horse riding before we continue.
Lunch in camp and transfer to Tash Rabat caravanserai. Transfer via Moldo Ashuu pass and arrive to Naryn town, then proceed closer to the border with China.
Stop in Kara Koum canyon, near Tash Rabat caravanserai. Accommodation in yurt camp. Dinner and overnight.
Day 4
Tash Rabat caravanserai – Karakol town.
Long driving day. Transfer first to Kochkor village. Stop for a lunch. See famous souvenir shop museum and demonstration of producing felt.
Continue drive to Karakol town. Reach south shore of the Issyk Kul Lake and transfer along. Arrival to Karakol town. Accommodation in a hotel. Dinner and overnight.
Day 5

Tajikistan is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, and more than 93% of it is mountainous. Ninety-three percent of Tajikistan's territory is mountainous, and the mountain glaciers are the source of its rivers.
Fan Mountains – a popular tourism and mountain climbing area in Tajikistan. There are about 100 passes in height from 3200 to 5060 m (Mirali). The Fan Mountains are the highest part of Zeravshan range with 11 peaks above 5,000 m with sharp fantastical pointed forms. In the bosom of these mountains are about 30 lakes, the largest of which are Iskandarkul, and the most beautiful and picturesque, famous for the unique play of colors - Kulikalon. On the slopes of the mountains and upper valleys (altitude 3,000 m) – there are thickets of juniper forests, giving the appeal to the valleys of rivers Arg, Sarimat, Karakul and etc. You can see a birch, a poplar, a sea buckthorn in the valleys; well-spread shrubs - wild rose, barberry, currant, meadow-sweet; large areas of the slopes and valleys are covered with meadow, steppe, and semi-desert vegetation (Čair, Eremurus, astragalus, onion, sage, mint, thyme and etc.). Approaches to the passes of Fan Mountains are in the valleys of rivers Shing, Voru, Artuch, Pasrud (in the north) and Iskandar-river and Karakul (in the south). The starting points for the entrances are known Penjikent, Khujand and Dushanbe cities. Fan Mountains were sung by Yuri Vizbor, who was amazed by unusually beautiful scenery of this region. These mountains and countryside have become for him a very special place on the earth. The following lines are dedicated to Fan Mountains by Yuri Vizbor:

Tajikistan United Museum – includes the exhibits on history, natural history and art.
Museum of ethnography – professional showcase of 20th centure Tajik art. The collection includes pottery, carpets, cloaks, embroidery, jeweler, musical instruments, woodwork and more. Sleeping Budda.
Monument Somoni and park Rudaki
Lunch in local restoran.
Hissar fortress 30km outside of city – the remains of an 18th century fortress, occupied until 1924 is located in 30 km west of Dushanbe. Beside the fortress are two plain madrassahs, one dating from the 18th century and the other 19th, and beyond them is the mausoleum of 16th century (25km). Drive to Dushanbe.
