Reed boats and rafts, along with dugout canoes and other rafts, are among the oldest known types of boats. Often used as traditional fishing boats, they are still used in a few places around the world, though they have generally been replaced with planked boats. Reed boats can be distinguished from reed rafts, since reed boats are usually waterproofed with some form of tar. As well as boats and rafts, small floating islands have also been constructed from reeds.
The earliest discovered remains from a reed boat are 7000 years old, found in Kuwait. Reed boats are depicted in early petroglyphs and were common in Ancient Egypt. A famous example is the ark of bulrushes in which the baby Moses was set afloat. They were also constructed from early times in Peru and Bolivia, and boats with remarkedly similar design have been found in Easter Island. Reed boats are still used in Peru, Bolivia, Ethiopia, and until recently in Corfu. The explorations and investigations of the Norwegian ethnographer and adventurer Thor Heyerdahl have resulted in a better understanding of the construction and capabilities of reed boats.
A boat is a watercraft of any size designed to float or plane, to work or travel on water. Small boats are typically found on inland (lakes) or in protected coastal areas. However, boats such as the whaleboat were designed for operation from a ship in an offshore environment. In naval terms, a boat is a vessel small enough to be carried aboard another vessel (a ship). Another less restrictive definition is a vessel that can be lifted out of the water. Some definitions do not make a distinction in size, as bulk freighters 1,000 feet (300 m) long on the Great Lakes are called oreboats. For reasons of naval tradition, submarines are usually referred to as 'boats' rather than 'ships', regardless of their size and shape.
Boats have a wide variety of shapes, sizes and construction methods due to their intended purpose, available materials or local traditions. Canoe type boats have a long history and various versions are used throughout the world for transportation, fishing or sport. Fishing boats vary widely in style partly to match local conditions. Pleasure boats include ski boats, pontoon boats, and sailboats. House boats may be used for vacationing or long-term housing. Small boats can provide transport or convey cargo (lightering) to and from large ships. Lifeboats have rescue and safety functions. Boats can be powered by human power (e.g., rowboats), wind power (e.g., sailboats) and motor power (e.g., propellor-driven motorboats driven by gasoline or diesel engines).
Titicaca (in the hispanicized spelling) or Titiqaqa (Quechua) is a large, deep lake in the Andes on the border of Peru and Bolivia. By volume of water, it is the largest lake in South America.Lake Maracaibo has a larger surface area, though some consider it to be a large brackish bay due to its direct connection with the sea.
It is often called the highest navigable lake in the world, with a surface elevation of 3,812 metres (12,507 ft). Although this refers to navigation by large boats, it is generally considered to mean commercial craft. For many years the largest vessel afloat on the lake was the 2,200-ton, 79-metre (259 ft) SS Ollanta. Today the largest vessel is probably the similarly sized, but broader, train barge/float Manco Capac, operated by PeruRail (berthed, as of 17 June 2013, at 15°50′11″S 70°00′53″W / 15.8364°S 70.0147°W / -15.8364; -70.0147, across the pier from the Ollanta). At least two dozen bodies of water around the world are at higher elevations, but all are much smaller and shallower.

Papyrellas, or papyrus boats, are often represented on the terracottas, paintings and mosaics of ancient Egypt The papyrus plant, however, disappeared from the Egyptian countryside centuries ago, and one must travel to Ethiopia to see such craft, locally known as tankwas. The papyrus reed grows on the banks of Lake Tana, a lake that lies at 1850 metres above sea level and through which the Blue Nile flows, by more than 4000 km far from the river's mouth. The local inhabitants use the long stems of this plant to build their boats. Bundles of dried papyrus, laid end to end with a slight overlap, are lashed to an untrimmed pole of eucalyptus wood that acts as a sort of keel. The boat has a short life span of some three months and costs the equivalent of 3 euros. Its length depends on t...

(20 Oct 2016) In the age of space travel, an American explorer is getting ready to cross the Pacific Ocean from South America to Australia using an unusual ship: a reed boat built by Bolivian Aymara. The expedition seeks to prove that it was possible for ancient mariners to make this kind of journeys across huge ocean expanses in reed ships, and that the vessels could have been a key factor in human migration and the spread of civilization. The nearly 60-feet (18-meter) boat was built in La Paz at more than 11,800 feet (3,600-meters) above sea level. It uses the craft that worked for the indigenous people of the Andes cordillera to venture from the shores of Lake Titicaca all the way to Polynesia. The 51-year-old adventurer Phil Buck will lead the six-month expedition that he will ...

Magical Peru: http://www.youtube.com/diogok We woke up very early in Puno to go on a boat trip on lake Titicaca! On this first part, we stopped by the floating islands of the Uros People. On the next video, we head to Isla Taquile. The Uros are a pre-Incan people who live on forty-two self-fashioned floating islands in Lake Titicaca Puno, Peru and Bolivia. The Uros use bundles of dried totora reeds to make reed boats (balsas mats), and to make the islands themselves. The Uros islands at 3810 meters above sea level are just five kilometers west from Puno port. On the afternoon, we continued our boat tour heading to Isla Taquile, the most industrious island in Lake Titicaca. Its walled paths are crowned with rustic arches and dotted with Inca and pre-Inca ruins. Some 350 Quechua-speaking f...

Easter Island Moai’s were moved in Reed Boats by Inca King Topa Inca Yupanqui and his 20,000 men around 1480 AD. Once the Moai was sculpted, the reed boat was placed on top of it covering the Moai and locking the head position in the reed boat and later pulled by the ropes. Totora reed is a subspecies of the giant bulrush sedge. It grows around Lake Titicaca, the middle coast of Peru and on Easter Island in the Pacific Ocean. The Pacific Expedition Legend.

One of the unsung heroes of British song, composer Les Reed OBE has been a performer conductor artist and producer. His first big break was playing piano with the John Barry Seven. Since then he’s worked with many great names over his half-century in the business, including Joe Brown, Ike and Tina Turner, Adam Faith and Lulu, written hits for Tom Jones (‘Delilah’, ‘It’s Not Unusual’) and Engelbert Humperdinck (‘The Last Waltz’) and has been an eyewitness to some historic musical moments. This hour-long interview is packed with insight, information and anecdote told by a man who’s been there, done that and worn the T-shirt. (Did we mention the OBE?).
Guess what? Lots of big boats and not one bow thruster among them! Wait. ..no that's likely not true, there was a fancy USCG patrol boat on the river. I bet they had one. This whole place is a show room for what is really needed, and what works on a boat. There is certainly a lot of gear in today's Marine Chandlery that you might do well just leaving on the dock. Take a look at what seems to have changed the most over the years and the most obvious answer is the fortitude of the people on the ships.
