UGS paleontologists Jim Kirkland and Don DeBlieux spent last week assisting a crew from Utah State Parks and the Escalante Petrified Forest State Park in moving a large petrified tree to the park for display. The park received permission from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to move the tree from land they manage just outside the town of Escalante, and they called in UGS paleontologists to consult with and oversee the move. Several pieces of heavy equipment were needed to lift the log, which was already separated into sections, onto a flatbed truck for the several-mile drive to the park. Eighteen sections were moved, including the base of the tree that was estimated to weigh over 2 tons, and lifted back into place in the sand-filled concrete enclosure that had been constructed to house the tree. The park is known for its large number of petrified logs eroding out of the 150-million-year-old Morrison Formation rocks. These logs are found on a plateau above the park entrance that can only be accessed by a fairly rugged hike, so not all visitors will have the time or the ability to see them. By having a large tree on display near the visitors center, many more people, including those with physical challenges, will be able to view and learn about the fossils found in this region. The cooperation of the BLM and State Parks for the benefit of Utah citizens and visitors was well exemplified during this project.

'INTRODUCTION TO PHOTO INTERPRETATION FOR THE DISCOVERY AND EVALUATION OF NATURAL RESOURCES... Provides training in the techniques of photo interpretation for the discovery and evaluation of the natural resources of a country or region. The film begins with a summary of the idea of "resources," and their development by mankind for a variety of purposes. Early on in the film the case is presented for the verification of information by a study of the ground area, and an understanding of ground truth. The use of aerial photography is introduced first by showing how trees and vegetation coverage is evaluated and interpreted by the Forest Service. In this sequence, kinds of timber are differentiated and their images on photography examined. The difference between soft pine and hardwood deciduous trees is noted on the photos. Further analysis carried out by use of counting of crowns in measured areas, and by looking at crown size and forest density. A second segment details how Geologic maps can be made and benefit from aerial photographic interpretation. It is noted that color imagery adds a ueful and helpful dimension to the process of detecting certain minerals and formations. Ground Truth observations, and verification for accuracy of interpretation are stressed. The interpreter should have direct familiarity with the various areas he is mapping and interpreting. In the third segment, soil mapping by photo interpretation is covered. Large areas can be quickly and relatively accurately characterized, but an emphasis on ground truth and familiarity with soil types, and soil chemical analysis is given substantial weight. The general correlation of the soils and the chemistry of them with local geological structure and water abundance is also intimated. The fourth segment discusses photo interpretation of hydrologic detail. Again, ground truth is emphasized to allow characterization of hydrology from the specific to the general to be made with confidence. Vegetation and geologic structure also arefactors which are considered in the hydrologic photo-interpretation.'
Public domain film from the US National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).

Aerial photography is the taking of photographs of the ground from an elevated position. Usually the camera is not supported by a ground-based structure. From 1921, Aerofilms carried out vertical photography for survey and mapping purposes. During the 1930s, the company pioneered the science of photogrammetry (mapping from aerial photographs), with the Ordnance Survey amongst the company's clients.
Another successful pioneer of the commercial use of aerial photography was the American Sherman Fairchild who started his own aircraft firm Fairchild Aircraft to develop and build specialized aircraft for high altitude aerial survey missions. One Fairchild aerial survey aircraft in 1935 carried unit that combined two synchronized cameras, and each camera having five six inch lenses with a ten inch lenses and took photos from 23,000 feet. Each photo covered two hundred and twenty five square miles... A year later, Fairchild introduced a better high altitude camera with nine-lens in one unit that could take a photo of 600 square miles with each exposure from 30,000 feet...

Photographic interpretation is “the act of examining photographic images for the purpose of identifying objects and judging their significance” (Colwell, 1997)...
Principles of image interpretation have been developed empirically for more than 150 years. The most basic of these principles are the elements of image interpretation. They are: location, size, shape, shadow, tone/color, texture, pattern, height/depth and site/situation/association. These are routinely used when interpreting an aerial photo or analyzing a photo-like image. A well-trained image interpreter uses many of these elements during his or her analysis without really thinking about them...

The Hayden Geological Survey of 1871 explored the region of northwestern Wyoming that later became Yellowstone National Park in 1872. It was led by geologist Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden. The 1871 survey was not Hayden's first, but it was the first federally funded, geological survey to explore and further document features in the region soon to become Yellowstone National Park and played a prominent role in convincing the U.S. Congress to pass the legislation creating the park. In 1894, Nathaniel P. Langford, the first park superintendent and a member of the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition which explored the park in 1870, wrote this about the Hayden expedition:

A strong 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of central Chile late Tuesday but there was no immediate tsunami alert, US seismologists said.
The epicenter of the quake was near the coast, about 93 kilometers (57 miles) northwest of Coquimbo, said the US Geological Survey (USGS). It initially gave the magnitude as 6.6.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami threat from the quake, which struck at 8:54 pm (0154 GMT Wednesday) at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Chile is no stranger to earthquakes.
In September, the same area of the country was hit by an 8.3-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that left 15 dead and over 16,000 homeless.

Desert LCC webinar: The StreamStats Web Application of the U.S. Geological Survey
DATE: Wednesday, June 17, 2015
TIME: 1:00 PM Pacific / 2:00 PM Mountain / 3:00 PM Central / 4:00 PM Eastern
Abstract:
StreamStats (http://streamstats.usgs.gov) is a GIS-based Web application that was developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) as a decision-support system for use in resource conservation, planning and management activities, as well as for engineering and design purposes. Its primary function is to provide users with streamflow statistics, basin characteristics, and other information for USGS data-collection stations and for ungaged sites. Users can select data-collection station locations shown on a map and obtain previously published information for the stations. Users also can select any location along a stream and obtain the drainage-basin boundary, basin characteristics, and estimates of flood frequency and other types of streamflow statistics for the location. The estimates for ungaged sites are determined either from USGS regional regression equations or on the basis of the flow per unit area at a nearby, upstream or downstream streamgage. In addition to this functionality, StreamStats includes tools that allow users to determine locations of and obtain information for upstream and downstream activities along streams, such as streamgages and dams, and to obtain elevation profiles along stream channels and between points on the land surface. This presentation describes what StreamStats does, how it works, implementation status and plans, and planned program enhancement.
About the Presenter:
Kernell Ries, is a hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey's Office of Surface Water, where he is the national coordinator for the StreamStats Program. He has managed the StreamStats program since its inception in 2001. Kernell also worked in the Massachusetts USGS office for 22 years and in the Maryland USGS office for 6 years. During his career, Kernell has authored or co-authored more than 50 publications on various aspects of surface-water hydrology. He has a degree in hydrology from the University of New Hampshire.
