Donner Pass is one of the steepest grades in California winding down from Reno Nevada almost to Sacramento. Indiana Jack brings his big rig to the top and lets it roll all the way to the bottom of this dangerous mountain pass.
Donner Pass is famous for winter railroading. Every year, the Union Pacific Railroad has to fight Mother Nature in order to keep the rail line open, and trains moving. In this video, you will see a few Union Pacific trains as they work through winter conditions. The first train you'll see is an empty grain shuttle heading east through Floriston. After that it is the ZNPOA at the Norden Snowshed and KLTG2 at Soda Springs. Enjoy.

Among the residents of the suburban communities at the foothills of the Sierras, there's an urban legend that the Donner Party tragedy of 1846 was no accident, that in fact George Donner lured them up there on purpose - to eat them. The legend says that there's a curse in those mountains - if you eat living human flesh, you'll absorb the victim's life force, and live forever. They say Donner still up there, still hunting for his next victim.
No one actually believes it. But when a group of teens on a ski weekend get snowed in at a mountain cabin and two members of their group turn up not only dead, but half-eaten, the surviving teens realize that someone - or something - is out there. And whatever it is, it's hungry.
As the body count mounts, old enmities surface, suspicions mount, and the teens begin to turn on each other. Nothing - and no one - is what is seems in this tightly woven dark thriller. And history doesn't always stay in the past.

Headed out over Donner Pass again on March 13th. Truck chain requirements were max and the road was mostly ice with a little snow on top. I kept this video at normal speed so you can hum along to the chain noise.

Here is a short video I made with my Phantom 3 Professional. These tunnels were pretty amazing and you can walk through all of them, it goes for miles, if you have a chance, this is a must see
Donner Pass is a high mountain pass located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, through which emigrants first traveled to California in 1844. Today, it hosts both Interstate 80 (formerly US Route 40, the "Lincoln Highway") and Union Pacific's Roseville Subdivision.
Donner Pass is well known for two different incidents that occurred near the summit. The first, and probably most known, is the infamous Donner Party that was stranded on the pass during a snowstorm in 1846. The second, and probably remembered mostly by railfans, is when the Southern Pacific's City of San Francisco was stranded at nearby Yuba Pass for 6 days during a snowstorm in January, 1952.
There are a few portions of the Donner Pass line that have been abandoned. Tunnel Zero was abandoned during World War II; it is hidden behind vegetation. Both Yuba Gap's Main #2 and Main #1 at the summit were pulled up in 1993 when SP's president decided to pull up track on SP routes to save money and use to double track the Sunset Route. It is not known why Tunnel 40 at Troy was abandoned, but it has been located. Tunnel 15 on Main #1 was abandoned in 1913 because of double tracking, but it has yet to be located (and is thus missing on the map).

With the time off work, I found my opportunities on 11-27-15 and over the weekend of 1-23 and 1-24-16. I managed to gather up a good collection of clips featuring UP stacks, manifests, flanger plows, and even a UP SD70ACe leading Amtrak Zephyr 5. Plus new spots. Enjoy.

After getting hit with an abnormally strong December storm, Donner was blanketed in snow from about 5,000 feet upwards. To take advantage of the unusual snow levels, I headed for the hills with a friend to see some trains. Cool catches include CP power on an empty grain train, an ACS-64 on the Zephyr, and an NS unit on an empty coal train. Enjoy.

Union Pacific 844 Big Steam Over Donner Pass
All these videos were taken during my chase of Union Pacific 844 as it traveled between Sparks, NV and Sacramento, CA for the 150th Anniversary Event. This chase occurred on September 27th, 2012. Union Pacific 844 is a very special locomotive. It was the last steam locomotive delivered to Union Pacific and has been the only one not to have ever been retired. 844 originally hauled some of the biggest named passenger trains in UP's system. Once diesel units took over the passenger trains, 844 saw a few years of freight service. By 1960, diesel units had taken over UP's system. Luckily, 844 was kept from being scrapped and remained with the company. These days, Union Pacific 844 is in the hands of the UP Steam Team. The Steam Team is based out of Cheyenne, WY. A tractor trailer can't handle a 55 mph curve and is speeding way to fast down Donner Pass, but its to late. The driver looses control, and the dash cam in an England truck catches the action. The England driver does pull off the road safely after he passes the wreck to assist. The rookie driver, and the driver trainer was killed instantly in this wreck. This is not my video, but as being a driver myself for 43 years, and a trainer, I have seen many usless accidents myself over the years by drivers in a hurry, tired, or just in-experienced. Travel Headache & Heavy Snow in at Donner Pass, CA
A strong storm system moved into the Sierra Nevada mountains between Sacramento, CA and Reno, NV leading to very hazardous travel conditions along I-80 on Donner Pass on the west side of Truckee, CA. Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for the region through Tuesday morning. Accumulations in the higher elevations could run as much as a foot in places while lower elevations such as Reno could see up to 3-4 inches by Tuesday. Snow began early in the afternoon across eastern CA in the higher elevations and several inches had accumulated before sunset. Traffic along I-80 was slowed due to slippery conditions, very heavy snowfall, and several accidents. Among the residents of the suburban communities at the foothills of the Sierras, there's an urban legend that the Donner Party tragedy of 1846 was no accident, that in fact George Donner lured them up there on purpose - to eat them. The legend says that there's a curse in those mountains - if you eat living human flesh, you'll absorb the victim's life force, and live forever. They say Donner still up there, still hunting for his next victim.
No one actually believes it. But when a group of teens on a ski weekend get snowed in at a mountain cabin and two members of their group turn up not only dead, but half-eaten, the surviving teens realize that someone - or something - is out there. And whatever it is, it's hungry.
As the body count mounts, old enmities surface, suspicions mount, and the teens begin to turn on each other. Nothing - and no one - is what is seems in this tightly woven dark thriller. And history doesn't always stay in the past.

Donner Pass is a high mountain pass located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, through which emigrants first traveled to California in 1844. Today, it hosts both Interstate 80 (formerly US Route 40, the "Lincoln Highway") and Union Pacific's Roseville Subdivision.
Donner Pass is well known for two different incidents that occurred near the summit. The first, and probably most known, is the infamous Donner Party that was stranded on the pass during a snowstorm in 1846. The second, and probably remembered mostly by railfans, is when the Southern Pacific's City of San Francisco was stranded at nearby Yuba Pass for 6 days during a snowstorm in January, 1952.
There are a few portions of the Donner Pass line that have been abandoned. Tunnel Zero was abandoned during World War II; it is hidden behind vegetation. Both Yuba Gap's Main #2 and Main #1 at the summit were pulled up in 1993 when SP's president decided to pull up track on SP routes to save money and use to double track the Sunset Route. It is not known why Tunnel 40 at Troy was abandoned, but it has been located. Tunnel 15 on Main #1 was abandoned in 1913 because of double tracking, but it has yet to be located (and is thus missing on the map).

All these videos were taken during my chase of Union Pacific 844 as it traveled between Sparks, NV and Sacramento, CA for the 150th Anniversary Event. This chase occurred on September 27th, 2012.
Union Pacific 844 is a very special locomotive. It was the last steam locomotive delivered to Union Pacific and has been the only one not to have ever been retired. 844 originally hauled some of the biggest named passenger trains in UP's system. Once diesel units took over the passenger trains, 844 saw a few years of freight service. By 1960, diesel units had taken over UP's system. Luckily, 844 was kept from being scrapped and remained with the company.
These days, Union Pacific 844 is in the hands of the UP Steam Team. The Steam Team is based out of Cheyenne, WY. A lot of time is spent in Cheyenne caring for the locomotive but a few times a year, UP 844 leaves the shop and gets out on the mainline. 844 has traveled throughout the UP system on PR passenger runs. 844 is so effective with PR that it has been deemed the "PR atomic bomb". It sure brings a lot of excitement every time it passes through your area.
Here are some facts about UP 844 if you didn't already know them:

Configuration: 4-8-4
Gauge: Standard (4ft 8.5in)
Driver Wheel Diameter: 80 in.

There is nothing quite like watching UP 844. I was lucky enough to be able to chase UP 844 down Donner Pass. Here are the locations I was able to catch 844 at:

4. Emigrant Gap, CA
5. Long Ravine Trestle
6. Clipper Gap, CA
7. Penryn, CA
8. Sacramento, CA
When UP 844 ran over Donner Pass, it had the symbol SSPSA-27 (Special from Sparks to Sacramento). Here was the consist:

UP "Jim Adams" Water Holder

Engineer Ed Dickens was running this train. He sure was generous with the whistle. The entire steam team did a great job running 844 that day.

A tractor trailer can't handle a 55 mph curve and is speeding way to fast down Donner Pass, but its to late. The driver looses control, and the dash cam in an England truck catches the action. The England driver does pull off the road safely after he passes the wreck to assist. The rookie driver, and the driver trainer was killed instantly in this wreck. This is not my video, but as being a driver myself for 43 years, and a trainer, I have seen many usless accidents myself over the years by drivers in a hurry, tired, or just in-experienced. If the viewing of this video saves one life, then it has done its job. Please be safe out there driver, and God bless the family of the lost loved ones...

A strong storm system moved into the Sierra Nevada mountains between Sacramento, CA and Reno, NV leading to very hazardous travel conditions along I-80 on Donner Pass on the west side of Truckee, CA. Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for the region through Tuesday morning. Accumulations in the higher elevations could run as much as a foot in places while lower elevations such as Reno could see up to 3-4 inches by Tuesday.
Snow began early in the afternoon across eastern CA in the higher elevations and several inches had accumulated before sunset. Traffic along I-80 was slowed due to slippery conditions, very heavy snowfall, and several accidents. Chain laws are in effect for the pass with snow expected to remain heavy off and on through Tuesday.
The storm system has slowed from previous forecasts, leading to the Reno NWS office to extend the advisory into the lower elevations as snow will be around longer, thus accumulating more. The advisories were already in effect to the west, however accumulations were raised due to the slowing speed of the system.

With it's elevation change of over 2,000 feet, aggressive corners and possible top speeds of up to 45 mph, the Sector 9 team took advantage of the closed road to explore the dangers that lurk at every corner. Ride The Rails Up And Over Donner Pass From Colfax To Truckee, CA (Hi-def and 3-D enabled)
This Google Earth video follows the route that was originally laid out by the Central Pacific Railroad in the early 1860's. Be aware that in Google Earth, man-made objects, including infrastructure, follow the contour of the landscape. This accounts for the roller coaster appearance of the railroad tracks. Our train is traveling at 75 mph. The camera is about 15 meters above the ground. You'll be able to see how the railroad winds its way through the mountains from west to east. The builders of Interstate 80 followed the railroad's lead in many areas; a testament to the forward-thinking engineering of the mid 19th century. Nearly all of the route has been double-tracked since these photos were taken. Enjoy the ride. -

An SD40T-2 is a 6-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division having a 16-cylinder EMD 645E3 diesel engine producing 3,000 horsepower (2,240 kW). 312 SD40T-2s were built for North American railroads between April 1974 and July 1980. This locomotive and the SD45T-2 are popularly called tunnel motors, but EMD's term is SD40-2s with "cooling system modifications" because they were designed for better engine cooling in tunnels. The difference between this locomotive and its non-tunnel motor cousin, the SD40-2, are the radiator intakes and radiator fan grills located at the rear of the locomotive. The radiator air intakes in this model were along the deck to allow more fresh, cooler air to enter and less hot exhaust fumes lingering around the tunnel's ceiling... -

Be aware that in Google Earth, man-made objects, including infrastructure, follow the contour of the landscape. This accounts for the roller coaster appearance of the railroad tracks. Our train is traveling at 75 mph. The camera is about 15 meters above the ground. You'll be able to see how the railroad winds its way through the mountains from west to east. The builders of Interstate 80 followed the railroad's lead in many areas; a testament to the forward-thinking engineering of the mid 19th century. Nearly all of the route has been double-tracked since these photos were taken. Enjoy the ride.

An SD40T-2 is a 6-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division having a 16-cylinder EMD 645E3 diesel engine producing 3,000 horsepower (2,240 kW). 312 SD40T-2s were built for North American railroads between April 1974 and July 1980. This locomotive and the SD45T-2 are popularly called tunnel motors, but EMD's term is SD40-2s with "cooling system modifications" because they were designed for better engine cooling in tunnels. The difference between this locomotive and its non-tunnel motor cousin, the SD40-2, are the radiator intakes and radiator fan grills located at the rear of the locomotive. The radiator air intakes in this model were along the deck to allow more fresh, cooler air to enter and less hot exhaust fumes lingering around the tunnel's ceiling.

This locomotive model was purchased by the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, the Southern Pacific Railroad, and its subsidiary Cotton Belt. Southern Pacific's version has a 4,400-US-gallon (16,700 L; 3,660 imp gal) fuel tank and is 70 feet 8 inches (21.54 m) long. Rio Grande's version has a smaller 4,000-US-gallon (15,100 l; 3,330 imp gal) fuel tank. After merging with Rio Grande, the Southern Pacific and later Union Pacific owned every SD40T-2.
In 2005, most of these units were owned by Union Pacific or leasing companies. By 2008, none were left in service on UP with SP or DRGW reporting marks. DRGW 5371 was the last one, retired in March 2008, and now resides at the Utah State Railroad Museum in Ogden Utah. UP still runs many units repainted in its own livery.
