Subjectivity and objectivity(GDD-71) DVD
There is no conflict between subjectivity and objectivity because they are relative. Objectivity is achieved by bringing together everyone's subjective opinions, weighing up their importance, and making a best choice while respecting everyone’s subjective consciousness.

Here's another installment of my philosophical wanderings. As usual feedback is appreciated.
Text: There are people who like to purport that they are entirely objective and rational. I am not one of those people. I consider most of the thoughts in my head to be at least a little subjective and some are a lot so. In a world that increasingly considers skepticism to be a virtue, it strikes me as strange how often people fail to apply that standard to their own ideas. And while I do believe that things exist which are objectively true and good, I have found that people in general have trouble determining and agreeing what those things are.
The first part of the problem as I see it is that many people rely on what they consider self evident assumptions. If one takes it as axiomatic that Scripture is infallible, for instance, one can produce a large and logical body of ideas based on that starting point. But then the same people go on to prove that their scripture has no errors by arguing from those scriptures. That kind of argument is circular logic. For those who don’t believe the original premise anything constructed from it is unconvincing. Some secular thinking falls into the same trap. If one assumes that the scientific method is the only way to arrive at truth and then uses the scientific method to prove that this is the case, it seems equally circular to me. I personally see both scripture and science as having value in finding things that are true and good. But neither are perfect, nor can our interpretations of them be perfect.
This brings me to my second problem with people claiming objectivity about principles of what is true and good. I am resistant to assertions that anyone has a monopoly on them. I find that the more people are certain of things as they are arranged in their own heads, the less able they are to learn from disagreements. Public figures debate their points and hardly ever listen to the other side of the debate except to tear it down. And people watching often choose sides and close out alternate views. This is especially the case when the above instances come into contact as far as I’ve been able to tell. But my problems with pitting Religion against Science will have to wait for another day.

Posthuman Antiquities: A Cross-Disciplinary Conference | November 14-15, 2014
Hemmerdinger Hall, The Silver Center for Arts & Science, New York University
Panel I, November 14, 2014
Song and Dance Man: Plato and the Limits of the Human—Michael Naas, DePaul University
Hearing Voices: The Sounds in Socrates’ Head—Ramona Naddaff, UC Berkeley
Sounds of Subjectivity or Resonances of Something Other—Kristin Sampson, University of Bergen
Moderator: Timothy Duffy (Comparative Literature, New York University)
What can an inquiry into antiquity offer posthumanist thinking on the body, on nature and its relationship with technology, and on the fundamental interrelatedness of the physical, the biological, the psychical, the social and the artifactual? Greek and Roman literary, philosophical, and medical texts are resplendent with sites in which “materiality” and “embodiment” (in current parlance) erupt into a field of questioning, deliberation, care, and experimentation. A return to antiquity is particularly pertinent in the wake of the philosophical demise of the sovereignty of the modern individual human subject and the rise not only of discourses such as deconstruction, psychoanalysis, and feminism, but also recent turns to chaos theory, complexity theory, vitalism, affect theory, environmental philosophy, and animal studies. As with these contemporary discourses, classical thinking displaces and complicates the modern notion of subjectivity, and finds movement and life inherently at work in both organic and inorganic phenomena. This international conference seeks to foster conversation and cross-pollination between these vastly different periods positioned, as they both are, as transitional zones. We propose that through an encounter with “the Greeks,” we can not only re-imagine the trajectories and potentialities of contemporary posthumanist theorizing, but also interrogate narratives of origin, legacy, and linear temporality.
Keynote speakers: Claudia Baracchi (Milan-Bicocca) and Adriana Cavarero (Verona).
Speakers: Emanuela Bianchi (NYU), Sara Brill (Fairfield), Rebecca Hill (RMIT), Brooke Holmes (Princeton), Miriam Leonard (UCL), Michael Naas (DePaul), Ramona Naddaff (UC Berkeley), Mark Payne (Chicago), John Protevi (Louisiana State), Kristin Sampson (Bergen), Giulia Sissa (UCLA).

Sponsored by the Department of Comparative Literature, New York University, with additional support from: Center for Ancient Studies at NYU; Gallatin Fund for Classics and the Contemporary World; College of Arts and Sciences, Fairfield University; Global Research Initiatives, Office of the Provost, NYU; Office of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science, NYU; The Humanities Initiative at NYU; Office of the Dean for Humanities, NYU; Postclassicisms (Princeton University); Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality at NYU; Department of Philosophy, NYU; Department of Classics, NYU; Department of Media, Culture, and Communication, NYU; Department of English, NYU; the A.S.
