US President Barack Obama and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping met on Tuesday for an informal dinner during the first part of a two-day summit intended to smooth relations between the world's largest economies.
The two leaders and their advisers gathered in Zhongnanhai, an imperial garden in central Beijing that serves as the headquarters of the Chinese government, and called for a productive meeting.
Obama said when the US and China cooperate, the "world benefits" added that he hopes to take the relationship "to a new level."
The meeting, held on the heels of an Asia-Pacific regional summit, is the first between the two men since Obama hosted Xi at the Sunnylands retreat in California in June last year.
Although that meeting was hailed as a first step toward building a "new model" of relations between the countries, bilateral ties quickly soured.
Since then, the two powers have repeatedly tangled over cyberspying, trade issues and China's aggressive military activities in the East and South China seas.
Obama has made it clear he now hopes to put the past behind and get the relationship back on a more positive course.

wn.com/China Se Muestra Como Una Gran Potencia Militar En El Desfile Soñado Por Xi

The Duchess of Cambridge was stunning in red on 20 October as she attended her first state banquet in honour of Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is a guest of Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. The Duchess, who was accompanying her husband Prince William, wore her favourite designer Jenny Peckham in a radiant red gown, complete with the Lotus Flower tiara. The royal mother of two wore her shiny brunette hair in an elegant updo, which she complimented with sparkling diamond drop earrings and a bracelet, Hello! Magazine reported. The banquet also marked the new mother's first official outing since ending her maternity leave following the birth of her daughter Princess Charlotte. According to the magazine, the 33-year-old wore the Papyrus/Lotus Flower tiara for a second time; she previously wore it during the annual diplomatic reception in 2013. The first time she was pictured wearing a tiara in public was her 2011 wedding, when she donned the Cartier Halo tiara.

Chinese President Xi Jinping's speech at the 2015 World Internet Conference (WIC) on Wednesday laid a special stress on the importance of connectivity.
In his addressing, Xi said: "(We need to) speed up the building of global cyber infrastructure and promote connectivity. Only by strengthening the building of IT infrastructure to pave the way for smooth information flow can we narrow the digital gap between different countries, regions and communities and ensure the full flow of information resources."
This idea is echoed by business leaders who deem interconnection to be of paramount importance.
"There is a saying in the age of the Internet -- the world is my R&D; department, which means that I am able to make use of all the resources around the world thanks to interconnection," said Zhang Ruimin, CEO of Haier Group.
Interconnection as a key idea of this conference is also shown in its theme -- 'An Interconnected World Shared and Governed by All -- Building a Cyberspace Community of Shared Destiny'.
Lu Wei, director of Cyberspace Administration of China, interpreted the importance of interconnection at a press briefing earlier this month in Beijing.
"Interconnection is the top priority of the Internet. The unique feature of interconnection is that any information at one point can be shared by the whole network. The Internet has turned the world into a global village. Cyberspace has become a new space for people to live in while the international community is becoming an integral whole with a common destiny. In this space, no one can stay aloof from others," said Lu.

China's President Xi Jinping has called on countries to respect one another's "cyber sovereignty" and different internet governance models.
Mr Xi said that countries have the right to choose how to develop and regulate their internet.
He was speaking at the Beijing sponsored World Internet Conference held in Zhejiang province.
China has been criticised for its strict internet regulations where it blocks major sites and censors posts.
The BBC's John Sudworth, who is at the conference, says the keynote speech by President Xi is a clear sign that internet security and control have been elevated to national priorities.
His message is that China, with 650 million internet users, should have a say in drawing up the global rules and that they should include the right to decide what to censor and block, our correspondent adds.
Reporters Without Borders has been urging foreign companies and governments to stay away from the conference because their attendance, it says, makes them complicit in a censorship regime in which almost 40 journalists are currently in prison for work posted online.

(Speech begins at 20:28 on the timeline)
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear Friends,
In our Sunnylands meeting in 2013, President Obama and I reached the important agreement to jointly build a new model of major-country relationship between the two countries. This was a major, strategic choice we made together on the basis of historical experience, our respective national conditions and the prevailing trend of the world.
Over the past two years and more, the two sides have acted in accordance with the agreement, steadily moved forward bilateral coordination and cooperation in various fields and made important progress. We worked hand in hand to cope with the aftermath of the international financial crisis and promoted global economic recovery. We deepened pragmatic exchanges and cooperation in all fields which brought about tangible benefits to the two peoples. Last year, bilateral trade, two-way investment stock and total number of personnel exchanges all hit a record high. We maintained close communication and coordination on such international and regional hotspot issues as the Iranian nuclear issue, the Korean nuclear issue, South Sudan, Afghanistan, the Middle East as well as such global issues as fighting against Ebola and countering terrorism. As an old Chinese saying goes, "Peaches and plums do not talk, yet a path is formed beneath them." These worthy fruits of cooperation across the Pacific Ocean speaks eloquently to the vitality and potential of China-U.S. relations.
This leads to the question: what shall we do to advance the new model of major country relationship between China and the U.S. from a new starting point and how can we work together to promote world peace and development? The answer, in my view, is to stick to the right direction of such a new model of relationship and make gradual yet solid progress. An ancient Chinese said, "A decision can be properly made after taking into account the past, the future and the normal practices." A number of things are particularly important for our efforts.
