The Communist Party of Ireland is an all-Ireland Marxist party founded in 1933. Its aim is to win the support of the majority of the Irish people for ending the capitalist system and for building socialism—a social system in which the means of production, distribution and exchange are publicly owned and utilised for the benefit of the whole people.

Around the the country the twinkling of the Christmas lights and decorations beckons us into the glitter-adorned shops and shopping centres, caressing us and persuading us to part with our hard-earned money, to place the little plastic card in the machine to buy that must-have present, to push everyone further into debt in a shopping frenzy to buy goods we don’t really need. The general secretary of the CPI, Eugene McCartan, condemned the violent attacks on people that took place in Paris last night [13 November] but pointed out that they are a violent reaction to the violence of imperialism and the plundering of resources and peoples.

The 17th International Meeting of Communist and Workers’ Parties took place in Ankara from 29 to 31 November. The general secretary of the CPI, Eugene McCartan, addressed the conference on the struggle against imperialism and the situation in Ireland.

Greek workers’ resistance and the EU

On Wednesday 21 October a successful public meeting was held in Swords, Co. Dublin, on the theme “Greek workers’ resistance and the EU.” The meeting was addressed by Sotirios Zarianopoulos (Communist Party of Greece), a member of the EU Parliament, and Eoin McDonnell, Dublin district chairperson, CPI.
