Anytime you can land your open-cockpit biplane on grass, it's a beautiful thing.
There are almost none of those places in
Southern California,
but once a year, toward the end of summer, at the
Del Mar polo grounds,
where the grass is immaculately maintained,
they invite a few special airplanes,
the old ones, with special character and beauty,
to come land on the grass the day before
and stay overnight and through the next day
to be viewed by the people attending a special polo match,
and then fly away for all to see at the end of the day.
The best part is the landing on grass!
Yes, this is a shaky video in places, and it's frustrating to watch
but then it gets steady again and there's some good footage
of the way it was in
1993, with a brand new
Waco YMF-5.
Annual event.
The
Ferrari and
Mitsubishi also in the video.
Saturday afternoon fly in,
then a fade out,
then
Sunday morning, early,
then afternoon crowds,
then fly out, pass,
Michael McCafferty,
Pilot/owner
Terry Lynn, crew
Lowell Williams, instructor and friend, was flying up front
I have no idea who was behind the camera.
This video recorded to youTube on10-6-2013 from a mini-VHS tape found in storage,
unseen for 20 years. Some deterioration of the quality of the recording is to be expected.
