Judy Blume

Judy Blume (born Judith Sussman on February 12, 1938) is an American writer. Her novels for children and young adults have exceeded sales of 80 million and have been translated into 32 languages. In 1996, she won the Margaret Edwards Award from the American Library Association for her contribution to writing for teens.

Blume's novels for teenagers tackled racism (Iggie's House), menstruation (Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret.), divorce (It's Not the End of the World, Just As Long As We're Together), bullying (Blubber), masturbation (Deenie, Then Again, Maybe I Won't) and sexuality (Forever). Blume has used these subjects to generate discussion, but they have also been the source of controversy regarding age-appropriate reading.

Early life

Blume was born and raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey, the daughter of homemaker Esther (née Rosenfeld) and dentist Ralph Sussman. She has a brother, David, who is five years older. Her family was Jewish. Blume has recalled, "I spent most of my childhood making up stories inside of my head." She graduated from Battin High School in 1956, then enrolled in Boston University. In the first semester, she was diagnosed with mononucleosis and took a brief leave from school before graduating from New York University in 1961 with a bachelor's degree in Education. In 1951 and 1952, there were three airplane crashes in her hometown of Elizabeth. 118 people died in the crashes, and Blume’s father, who was a dentist, helped to identify the unrecognizable remains. Blume says she "buried" these memories until she began writing her 2015 novel In The Unlikely Event, the plot of which revolves around the crashes.

Judith Hoag

Judith Hoag (born June 29, 1968) is an American actress. She is best known for portraying April O'Neil in the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film in 1990, and as Gwen Cromwell Piper in the Disney Channel Halloweentown television films series,. She is also known for her role as Tandy Hampton in the ABC drama series Nashville.

Career

Hoag has acted professionally since 1986. That year, she got one of her first gigs as a series regular in the ABC daytime soap opera Loving in the role of Charlotte 'Lotty' Bates Alden . After leaving Loving in 1988, Hoag began her career in primetime television, and in next year won female lead role on CBS comedy series Wolf. The series was canceled after a single season. In 1990 she starred in films A Matter of Degrees and Cadillac Man, and later was cast as April O'Neil in the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.

Hoag is most well known for her role as April O'Neil in the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film. The film turned out to be a huge success at the box office, eventually making over $135 million in North America, and over $66 million outside North America for a worldwide total of over $200 million, making it the ninth highest grossing film of 1990 worldwide. After Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fame, Hoag starred in a number of pilots not picked up as a series, and appeared in several television films, including Fine Things by Danielle Steel, and Switched at Birth opposite Bonnie Bedelia.

Book of Judith

The Book of Judith is a deuterocanonical book, included in the Septuagint and the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christian Old Testament of the Bible, but excluded from Jewish texts and assigned by Protestants to the Apocrypha. The book contains numerous historical anachronisms, which is why many scholars now accept it as non-historical; it has been considered a parable or perhaps the first historical novel.

Historical context

Original language

It is not clear whether the Book of Judith was originally written in Hebrew or in Greek. The oldest extant version is the Septuagint and might either be a translation from Hebrew or composed in Greek. Details of vocabulary and phrasing point to a Greek text written in a language modeled on the Greek developed through translating the other books in the Septuagint. The extant Hebrew language versions, whether identical to the Greek, or in the shorter Hebrew version, are medieval. The Hebrew versions name important figures directly such as the Seleucid king Antiochus Epiphanes, thus placing the events in the Hellenistic period when the Maccabees battled the Seleucid monarchs. The Greek version uses deliberately cryptic and anachronistic references such as "Nebuchadnezzar", a "King of Assyria," who "reigns in Nineveh," for the same king. The adoption of that name, though unhistorical, has been sometimes explained either as a copyist's addition, or an arbitrary name assigned to the ruler of Babylon.
