France’s Loire: Château Country
Along the Loire River Valley, the beautiful French countryside is studded with evocative châteaux. Home-basing in Amboise, we visit four unique castles: elegant Chenonceau, massive Chambord, stately Cheverny, and fragrant Villandry. Along the way, we tour Leonardo’s home, feed hunting dogs, enjoy the local cuisine, and savor a princely garden. | © 2014 Rick Steves' Europe

Hi everyone,
Welcome back to FUNSTON TV! Today, we are sharing some footage from our trip to the French Riviera. This video shows specifically our time in Nice.
It was a wonderful trip, and we were blessed with gorgeous weather. The beach was not too cold, and the sun was warm.
We tried traditional Nice food: salade niçoise, pissaladière and socca. The best food we had, was from the grocery store, believe it or not. Everything the grocery stores offer is fresh, with no preservatives, and oh so pure.
We loved the camembert, the butter, the baguettes, the crepes and the pâtés. We could eat this forever.
The architecture throughout the city was beautiful and it was like traveling back in time. The streets were for the most part very clean! The public transit system is great, and easy to use. You can use the very modern buses, trams or trains to get around.
Most of the people were nice. But here's a tip: don't try to speak French to them. Throw them off with your English.
Hope you enjoy this video, and please thumbs up if you do :)
Love.Live.Laugh.

Conference: After the Nobel Prize: New Perspectives on Patrick Modiano
Dialogue between Henry Rousso and Marianne Hirsch on Vichy France: History, Memory, Literature
The French writer Patrick Modiano is the winner of the 2014 Nobel Prize for Literature. During his nearly 50-year career, Modiano has published 29 novels, as well as a screenplay and popular song lyrics, garnering many literary prizes and scholarly acclaim. Born just after World War II to an Italian-Jewish father and French mother, his novels have explored questions of memory and identity during and after the Occupation and the Vichy regime. Modiano has said of his repeated return to these questions: "After each novel, I have the impression that I have cleared it all away... But I know I'll come back over and over again to tiny details, little things that are part of what I am. In the end, we are all determined by the place and the time in which we were born." In this conference celebrating the award of the Nobel Prize to Patrick Modiano, leading scholars discuss questions such as Modiano's use of literary and documentary sources, his stance on political engagement, and the politics of memory.
Support for this conference was generously provided by the Knapp Family Foundation. Additional support was provided by the Texas A&M; University French Centre d’Excellence and the Edward Tuck Professor of French Studies at Dartmouth University.

October 5, 2015 a panel discussion Vichy France and the Jews, revisited: Robert Paxton in conversation with Henry Rousso and Phil Nord
Robert Paxton and Michael R. Marrus's Vichy et les Juifs was published in 1981, first in French by Calmann Levy, then in English by Basic Books. This book, along with Paxton's 1973 book, Vichy France: Old Guard and New Order, completely altered historians' understanding of the nature of the Vichy regime and its anti-Jewish policies. Paxton's groundbreaking scholarship has entered the lexicon among French historians as la révolution paxtonienne. Robert Paxton has substantively revised Vichy et les Juifs for a re-edition to be released by Calmann Levy in October 2015, taking into account the rich scholarship that has appeared since the first edition in 1981. Henry Rousso will join Robert Paxton to discuss the new findings and directions researchers have taken in the past 25 years, the intense public interest this scholarship has generated, and how it has reshaped our understanding of Vichy’s Jewish policies.
Robert Paxton is Mellon Professor Emeritus of Social Sciences at Columbia University. Henry Rousso is a leading contemporary historian and director of the CNRS whose research - including Le Syndrome de Vichy - focuses on the history, legacy, and memory of the Vichy Regime. Phil Nord is the Rosengarten Professor of Modern and Contemporary History, Department of History, Princeton University.
Event co-sponsored by the Columbia Maison Française and Department of History. Funding for this event was provided by the Knapp Family Foundation.

Eng/French/Nat
Leading official of France's Vichy regime, Maurice Papon, will be charged, Wednesday, for complicity in crimes against humanity during World War II.
Papon, will face charges of the arrest and deportation of 1-thousand 690 Jews from the Bordeaux region to the Auschwitz concentration camp.
The trial is a unique opportunity for the French to face up to their wartime collaboration with Nazi Germany.
Fifty years after the collapse of the Vichy regime, 87-year old Maurice Papon, one of the regime's leading officials, will answer to charges of crimes against humanity.
It is alleged he committed these as a police supervisor in the Gironde region in southwestern France.
Documents show his signature on forms ordering the arrest of Jews as late as 1944, even after the D-Day Allied landing in Normandy.
Many thought Papon would never have his day in court - such was the level of protection enjoyed by top officials.
Ex-President Mitterrand admitted he had intervened to stall the proceedings when charges were initially brought against Papon.
This happened in 1981 when a Jewish historian whose family was deported on Papon's orders, stumbled across arrest orders signed by him.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
"We have a man charged (with crimes against humanity) it is Papon. Papon is responsible for the genocide in Bordeaux. He carries on his shoulders the responsibility of illegal and arbitrary arrests. During two years he took decisions on the life and death of the Jewish community. So he has to respond to that".
SUPER CAPTION: Michael Slitinsky, Historian
Of the estimated 76-thousand French Jews who were sent to Nazi death camps, about 2-thousand 500 survived.
For many of them the memories of the deportation's are vivid.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
"On July 19th 1942, we were about to flee to the free zone. We were having our dinner, we were eating vegetables - peas - I can remember. Someone knocked at the door. We thought it was the person who was supposed to help us flee. But it was the French police, from that moment I have no other memory."
SUPER CAPTION: Elaine Dommange, Plaintiff
Archives show that Papon rewrote his wartime resume and played up his alleged actions on behalf of the French Resistance.
This is how he avoided being brought to trial for so long.
Lawyers for Papon say that he should not be used as an example, or as a way to try the French administration of the time.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
"One man has been chosen, one scapegoat to run a sacrificial prosecution which is a sacrifice aimed at helping people to live with their conscience for the behaviour of the generation or generations before them"
SUPER CAPTION: Francis Vuillemin, defence lawyer
In an attempt to establish Papon's moral credibility, the defence will call former French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing, his then prime minister, Raymond Barre and former Bordeaux Mayor Jacques Chaban-Delmas, a noted Resistance figure.
But the prosecution say they will stick to the historical facts. Among them Papon's order in 1942 to track down and arrest 81 Jewish children, aged between two and 16.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Through his own intelligence, arrested the Jews, did his work the best he could, and was a piece of the machine, a high piece, a big piece, an important piece of the machine which took the Jews from France and arrested them in the privacy of their homes and who sent them to Auschwitz. In 48 hours, a Jewish child that was arrested in Bordeaux could be gassed at the other side of Europe, and he was a piece of that machinery, an important piece of that machinery. The Germans needed people like Papon to do that work."

French/Nat
France's Roman Catholic Church apologised on Tuesday for its silence during the systematic persecution of Jews during the Second World War.
About seventy six thousand Jews were deported from France by the Vichy regime, which supported the Nazi occupation.
Only a fraction survived.
It is an unprecedented apology by the French church.
More than a thousand Jews and Christians gathered for the ceremony on the grounds of Drancy, a wartime internment camp outside Paris.
Drancy is often called "the antechamber of death" because most internees were transported to Nazi concentration camps.
Food was scarce and hygiene virtually non-existent - many children, elderly and sick people perished.
Historians have repeatedly pointed out that the French Roman Catholic Church was indifferent to the suffering of Jews.
The church had a complex relationship with the puppet Vichy government.
In the early days of the war, most of France's bishops embraced its policies, which promised a return to spiritual and moral values.
By apologising, present day church leaders are supporting the request by Pope John Paul II that Roman Catholics face up to past sins.
(French)
"Today we confess that this silence was a mistake. We recognise also that the church of France at that point failed in its mission to educate consciences and thus bears with the Christian people the responsibility of not having offered help immediately, when protest and protection were possible and necessary, even if there were countless acts of courage later on. This is a fact we recognise now. Because this failing of the Church of France and its responsibility towards the Jewish people are part of its history. We confess this mistake. We beg God's forgiveness and we ask the Jewish people to hear these repentant words. This act of memory calls us to more vigilance towards the human being in the present and for the future".
SUPER CAPTION: Olivier de Herranger, Bishop of Saint-Denis
The announcement coincides with the 57th anniversary of the anti-Jewish laws passed in October 1940 by the Vichy government - which were stricter than those already in effect in Germany.
Vichy officials also carried out detailed censuses of the Jewish population and its assets, making it easier for police to track people down for deportation to Germany.
More than seventy thousand Jews were shipped to Nazi concentration camps.
Only two and a half thousand escaped death.
The representative of the Council of Jewish institutions said he appreciated the repentance by the church.
(French)
"Pronounced solemnly here in Drancy, this very symbolic place where this irreparable thing which leaves a mark on the French memory was committed, where like in other places in France compromise and collaboration of the highest public authorities with the Nazi occupiers reigned, where several dozens of thousands of Jews were placed in dreadful conditions under the vigilant and pitiless watch of French police were deported to the death camps - your words of repentance move us"
SUPER CAPTION: Henri Haijdenberg, President of the Representative Council of Jewish institutions
The timing of the Church's apology is significant.
Next week, Maurice Papon will become the highest-ranking Vichy official ever to face a jury on charges of complicity in crimes against humanity.
The former police supervisor in Bordeaux is charged with signing arrest orders that led to the deportation of over sixteen thousand Jews, including two hundred and twenty three children.
His trial is expected to shed light on the role of the French administration in the Holocaust.

French/Nat
As controversy continued to rage around the release of Maurice Papon, the former French police officer was out enjoying a walk in the park.
Papon, an officer in the pro-Nazi Vichy regime, spent his first day out of jail near his hotel -- a comfortable chateau 50 kilometres away from his accusers in Bordeaux.
APTV has an exclusive interview with Andre Rouxel, one of the three lawyers representing him.
Maurice Papon enjoyed his first day of freedom with a stroll in the park.
But his two bodyguards and dozens of French police and security officers were stark reminders of the controversy swirling around the decision to set him free.
Only a day earlier, the former pro-Nazi police officer was behind bars, standing trial in Bordeaux for crimes again humanity.
But on Friday, the court ordered Papon to be released from prison while the trial continues.
Under French law, that means 87 year-old Papon, will now remain free even if found guilty, until all subsequent appeals have been heard.
After hearing the decision, Papon immediately checked into the Hotel Le Relais de Margaux in Medoc village, about 50 kilometres from Bordeaux.
On Friday night, he dined out with his son and daughter, who had originally come to visit him in his prison cell.
Andre Rouxel, one of the three lawyers representing Papon, said his client is delighted by the decision.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
"He was very happy. He relies on the French justice system and he's now ready to justify himself in front of the court. He's very satisfied. The three nights he spent in prison were pure hell."
SUPER CAPTION: Andre Rouxel, lawyer
The court took into account Papon's age and his health in ordering his release.
Papon had complained of chest pains after the hearings on Thursday and was taken to hospital overnight but attended Friday's hearing.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
"When he left the Palais de Justice he came straight to the Hotel de Margaux, He was so happy he invited his three lawyers for dinner, but they refused. They wanted him to be able to dine alone with his son and daughter. In fact the son and daughter came to Bordeaux to ask for the right to see him in prison and that only when they arrived they learned he was free."
SUPER CAPTION: Andre Rouxel, lawyer
A former police official in the pro-Nazi Vichy regime, Papon is charged with ordering the deportation of 1-thousand 690 Jews, including 223 children, from Bordeaux.
In court on Thursday, Papon refused to acknowledge remorse for the suffering of Bordeaux's Jews.
He will be back at the Palais de Justice in Bordeaux on Monday to face the charges.

An eminent Professor of European history believes that the trial of Maurice Papon, on charges of crimes against humanity, will be an important moment for the French as they examine the role of the Vichy regime in helping the Nazis round up Jews. Speaking in advance of Papon's trial, which opens in Bordeaux on Wednesday (08/10), Professor Robert Paxton has spoken out about his role in the case. Paxton has written several books on the subject, one of which has become a mainstay in modern French history classes.

In a historic apology, France's Catholic Church, who had strong links with the collaborationist Vichy regime, recently asked for forgiveness from the Jewish community after remaining silent during the deportation of thousands of Jews to Nazi death camps. The apology comes only a few days before the opening of the war crimes trial of Maurice Papon, a senior official in the Vichy Government. The Vichy Regime, under Nazi ocupation, is held to be responsible for the war time persecution of Jews. Eighty-seven-year-old Papon is accused of crimes against humanity committed more than 50 years ago when he ordered hundreds of Jews, including children, to be rounded up to be sent to Nazi death camps.
He is said to have drawn up lists of Jews for arrest between June 1942 and August 1944.

French/Nat
The trial of Maurice Papon, a former Vichy official standing trial for crimes against humanity, resumes today (Monday) in Bordeaux.
He could soon be sentenced to a 20-year prison term, but he won't be going to jail anytime soon.
Papon, accused of helping Nazis deport French Jews during World War II, has been on trial for six months.
Mourning the recent death of his wife, Maurice Papon will go back to court on Monday
to stand for trial for his participation in crimes against humanity during World War II.
He has been on trial for six months in Bordeaux for assisting the Nazis while he was a French military officer under the Vichy regime.
But the former Vichy official knows that regardless of the trial's outcome, he will be able to continue making these walks for at least another year.
Jurors have the responsibility of deciding whether of not Papon is guilty.
If he is guilty, Papon could face a 20 year prison sentence.
But due to a decision made when the trial opened last October with the Cour de Cassation, he will continue to walk free for at least one year.
The court decided to allow him to leave the prison of Gradignan where he was forced to spend his first nights, and then kept him free for the duration of the trial.
If he is given a prison sentence, Papon's lawyers, led by Jean-Marc Varaut, will make an appeal at the Cour de Cassation - which will prevent the sentence from being carried out for at least one year.
Papon's lawyer says that because the trial deals with sensitive moral issues, his client is in a no-win situation.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
"Whatever the decision will be, it will be bad. If Maurice Papon is sentenced, that will be an unfairness, if he is relaxed that will be a scandal".
SUPER CAPTION: Jean-Marc Varaut, Papon's Lawyer
Varaut believes that the trial is being carried out to make a political statement.
And he argues that because Papon was a subordinate army officer, he had to obey orders.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
"The crime against humanity (charge) has been banalised. Any significance has been taken away from it. The (worse) crime among crimes, is when you use it against a state-worker whose role has been peripheral and subordinate. You use it as a pretext for a political trial - but you don't (use it to) organise the trial of a man."
SUPER CAPTION: Jean-Marc Varaut, Papon's Lawyer
As soon as the verdict is announced, Varaut says his client will return to his mansion in Gretz-Armainvilliers, the Paris suburb.
He will either get on with his life, or await further instructions on how to deal with a crime committed in a different lifetime, 50 years ago.

Eng/French/Nat
Defying French justice and angering Holocaust victims, former Vichy official Maurice Papon has fled France to avoid being jailed for his complicity in deporting 1-thousand 590 Jews to Nazi death camps during World War II.
The 89-year-old Papon, the highest-ranking member of the pro-Nazi Vichy regime to be convicted for complicity in crimes against humanity, maintained in a statement on Wednesday that he had chosen exile to uphold his honor.
He said he was defying a court order to spend Wednesday night in jail, pending an appeal against the conviction.
89-year-old Maurice Papon had asked to be exempted from the mandatory night in jail because of ill health, but a court rejected the request last week.
In a statement, Mr Papon said his only possible response now was to go into exile.
Mr Papon's whereabouts have been unknown for over a week.
His failure to turn up for a night in jail means that the appeal, due to be heard on Thursday, may be automatically rejected.
The French authorities said they would seek him out and arrest him.
But the lawyer for the victims of the convicted criminal said France would now look incapable of enforcing law and order.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"France will look stupid or like it is acting in bad faith when it asks for the pursuit of criminals against humanity in Kosovo or in Timor but is not able to condemn effectively its own criminals against humanity."
SUPER CAPTION: Arno Klarsfeld, Lawyer for Papon's victims
Klarsfeld said that Papon had escaped because he was a powerful man.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
"The message is that the powerful are able to get off free and that the weak pay. Maurice Papon was powerful. Sociological protection played a part in that he was powerful and Maurice Papon is no longer in France and so won't go to prison."
SUPER CAPTION: Arno Klarsfeld, Lawyer for Maurice Papon's victims
Filmed in Paris in 1998 while his trial was taking place, Papon subsequently went on to receiving a 10 year jail sentence for crimes against humanity.
He was found guilty of ordering the deportation of almost 1-thousand 600 Jews from occupied France to Nazi Germany.
Many went on to die in Auschwitz and other death camps.
However, he was found not guilty of complicity in their murder.
It took 16 years for the case to come to court, six months for it to be heard and more than 18 hours for the jury to reach their verdict.
Despite his decision to go into exile, Papon's defence team said he was not on the run and remains a free man.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
"He's not on the run, you are on the run when you are forced to go on the run. He's not forced to, he's free to do what he likes and as he desires."
SUPER CAPTION: Jean-Marc Varaut, Lawyer for Maurice Papon
Papon's defence team has consistently argued that he acted only on orders and did what he could to save those condemned to the Nazi death camps.
His lawyer, Jean-Marc Varaut, added that the team was awaiting the results of the appeal.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
"If the court listens to us, if it suppresses the decision to consider himself a prisoner, then the judges have the right and lawyers have the right to plead and then if that happened Papon would change his attitude."
SUPER CAPTION: Jean-marc Varaut, Lawyer for Maurice Papon
Papon is the most senior official of the Vichy regime, which collaborated with the Nazis, to stand trial for crimes against humanity.

France's highest court on Thursday upheld the conviction of Maurice Papon, the former Vichy official who has fled France rather than face prison for his role in sending Jews to Nazi death camps.
The Court of Cassation ruled that Papon lost his right of appeal by failing to report to prison as required before the hearing.
Under French law, the court ruling automatically confirms the conviction.
Papon, 89, was convicted in April 1998 for complicity in crimes against humanity for his role in the deportation of 1-thousand 590 Jews from the city of Bordeaux.
Most of the deportees later died at Auschwitz.
He is the highest-ranking official of the pro-Nazi Vichy regime to be convicted of crimes against humanity committed during World War Two.
Earlier on Thursday civil plaintiffs and their lawyers against Papon expressed their outrage at the fact the legal system allowed him to flee.
Arno Klarsfeld has blamed the French government and the judicial system for the escape which he says will have the world laughing at France.
Papon fled France for Switzerland last week but whose whereabouts currently are unknown.

A former official of the wartime French government, wanted for sending Jews to Nazi death camps during World War Two, is back in France.
Switzerland expelled 89-year-old Maurice Papon (pa-PAWN') on Friday.
The Swiss justice minister said Papon was handed over to French authorities after arriving by helicopter from Bern, Switzerland.
Papon left the French border town of Pontarlier about 1900 local time (1700 GMT) under police escort aboard a helicopter, eyewitnesses said.
He was expected to arrive later at a prison south of Paris.
The Swiss ruling coalition cabinet had met in emergency session to decide the fate of Papon, sentenced to 10 years in jail for his role in sending Jews to Nazi death camps.
It ordered the 89-year-old former official of France's pro-Nazi Vichy regime out of the country on the grounds that he was a "danger to the security of the country" and in the interests of Switzerland's foreign relations.
The justice minister added her government did not want to shelter someone sentenced to jail for crimes against humanity.
Papon is the highest-ranking official of the Vichy regime to be convicted of crimes against humanity committed during World War II.
He fled France recently, rather than face jail.
In a statement on Wednesday, Papon said he had chosen exile to uphold his honour.
Papon's flight from France was made possible by a controversial decision by the Bordeaux court at the beginning of his trial in 1997.
It accepted medical testimony that Papon was in poor health and freed him for the duration of the trial and the appeals period after he had spent three days in jail.
Under French law, Papon had to report to prison before the start of his appeals hearing on Thursday.
The appeal is automatically rejected if the appellant does not report to prison before the hearing.
Late on Thursday, French judicial authorities issued an international arrest warrant for Papon.
Swiss police, acting on information from France, arrested Papon at the Hotel Roessli in Gstaad at 2240 local time (2040 GMT) on Thursday.
Papon checked in last Saturday under the name of Robert de la Rochefoucauld.
He planned to stay until next Tuesday and had a visit on Wednesday from a woman claiming to be his niece.
Before arriving in Gstaad, Papon stayed under a false name at a hotel in the western Swiss town of Martigny from October 11 to last Saturday, officials said.
He was accompanied by one woman and two men, whose identities have yet to be established.
Unaware that Papon was already in the country, Swiss authorities issued an order on October 13 barring him from entering the country for five years.
By the time police were alerted to Papon's possible presence, his trail had been lost.
Papon had spent most of Friday in Bern's Insel Hospital, having complained of "health problems" after his arrest late on Thursday.
A doctor accompanied him out of Switzerland, but Swiss officials said he was in good health.
Arno Klarsfeld, who represented the victims in the trial called Papon a coward and suggested he might have been better off ending his life.
SOUNDBITE: (German)
"What are the motives for his arrest and deportation? The Swiss government with this action wants to make it clear that Switzerland is not a safe haven for people on the run who have been convicted of crimes against humanity. We have also done this to keep our country's image and international reputation."

Maurice Papon, the former Vichy official who fled France rather than face jail for his role in sending Jews to Nazi death camps, has been arrested in Switzerland.
Police acted on an international arrest warrant issued on Thursday in Bordeaux, France, after Papon failed to appear in court.
Lawyers for the families of those involved in Papon's trial accused him of being cowardly in fleeing France but said it was right that he would now be put in jail.
Arno Klarsfeld, who represented the victims in the trial called Papon a coward and suggested he might have been better off ending his life.
SOUNDBITE (English)
"So it's the end of this episode, he will be put to jail but Maurice Papon was in a way a coward and stupid, he should have maybe committed suicide before that a few days ago so that the Supreme Court wouldn't have heard this case and he wouldn't have lost his legion of honor but maybe he's too much of a coward to do that."
SUPER CAPTION: Arno Klarsfeld, Victims' Lawyer
Klarsfeld said it's over for Papon.
SOUNDBITE (French)
"This is the end for him. From now on he will stay in prison even if he is ill."

Papon was arrested on Thursday night at the Hotel Roessli in the mountain resort of Gstaad, 95 kilometers (59 miles) south of the capital Bern.
Papon was supposed to report to prison before the start of his appeals hearing on Thursday.
By not showing up, his appeal was automatically rejected under French law.
France's highest court, the Court of Cassation, ruled on Thursday that Papon lost his right of appeal by failing to report to prison as required before the hearing.
Papon is the highest-ranking official of the pro-Nazi Vichy regime to be convicted of crimes against humanity committed during World War Two.
Papon, 89, was convicted in April 1998 for complicity in crimes against humanity for his role in the deportation of one thousand 590 Jews from the city of Bordeaux.
Most of the deportees later died at Auschwitz.
The Bordeaux court freed him during his trial and appeals process, and he disappeared on the eve of the Court of Cassation appeal hearing.

The Making Of Atlantic Wall - TV Shows.
On 23 March 1942, Hitler issued Führer Directive No. 40, which called for the creation of an "Atlantic Wall". He ordered naval and submarine bases to be heavily defended. Fortifications remained concentrated around ports until late in 1943, when defenses were increased in other areas. Nazi propaganda claimed that the wall stretched from the cape of Norway down to the Spanish border.
Organisation Todt, which had designed the Siegfried Line during the prewar years along the Franco-German border, was the chief engineering group responsible for the design and construction of the wall's major gun emplacements and fortifications. The Vichy regime imposed a compulsory labour system, drafting some 600,000 French workers to construct these permanent fortifications along the Dutch, Belgian, and French coasts facing the English Channel.
