Philosopher Brian Epstein warns that without significant changes, social sciences as we know it will become irrelevant and obsolete. His research on the metaphysics of the social world lead him to ask fundamental questions such as what are languages, what are banks, or artifacts? Why should we care? Because according to Epstein, asking and answering such questions are the only way we can fix the foundations of social sciences.
Brian Epstein received his doctorate in philosophy from Stanford University, his master's in philosophy from Oxford University, and graduated summa cum laude with an AB in philosophy from Princeton University.
Brian Epstein's research interests include philosophy of social science, metaphysics and philosophy of language, focusing in particular on issues in the theory of reference and the ontology of social kinds. He also has interests in conceptual schemes, the philosophy of music and the philosophy of economics. Between degree programs, he worked at a number of technology startups and consulting firms. His interests outside philosophy include music and sound production, hiking and photographing ducks.

If You're So Free, Why Do You Follow Others? The Sociological Science Behind Social Networks and Social Influence.
Nicholas Christakis, Professor of Medical Sociology, Medicine, and Sociology at Harvard University
If you think you're in complete control of your destiny or even your own actions, you're wrong. Every choice you make, every behavior you exhibit, and even every desire you have finds its roots in the social universe. Nicholas Christakis explains why individual actions are inextricably linked to sociological pressures; whether you're absorbing altruism performed by someone you'll never meet or deciding to jump off the Golden Gate Bridge, collective phenomena affect every aspect of your life. By the end of the lecture Christakis has revealed a startling new way to understand the world that ranks sociology as one of the most vitally important social sciences.

The field of social science is vast. It consists of anthropology, sociology, political science, history, geography, economists, urban planning, geography, psychology etc. Naturally, social sciences come with a large scope and offer you a wide range of job opportunities. If you like studying social sciences, this career choice can actually take you very far.
If you study political science, you can become a teacher or professor. But if you want to take that further, the career choice of a political scientist would suit you best. This could be a wonderful job opportunity as you will learn about civic organizations, conduct researches on them and eventually become a political consultant for the country. Psychologists on the other hand need to have a doctorate license in order to master in this field. The main duty of psychologists is to counsel their patients. This requires a lot of training and practise. So if you would like to take this up, make sure you are well prepared to handle this. Archaeology is also another field of social science. Here professionals are made to work for the government in order to survey some of the major development sites. Geographers also work for the government. They play an important role in studying the physical impact of development on real estate pieces. If you choose to study economics in the future, you can become an economist and help the country’s economy from collapsing.
In order to establish a career in the field of social science, you need to first pick the field you would like to specialise in. Once you are done with that, make sure you apply to a college which provides you that subject as an undergraduate course. After graduation, you can always apply for post graduation for masters in some of the top universities of the country. Always remember that social sciences is given a lot of importance in a country like India so there will be thousands of students just like you hoping to make a bright career. Therefore the competition will be very tough, especially during the entrance test exams. So be well prepared and ready to handle difficult question papers. You should prepare some answers before sitting for the exam.
However, if you are keen on studying social sciences in India, here is a list of the top universities where you can apply.
• Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi
• Jamia Miliah Islamia University, Delhi
• Lady Shree Ram College for Women
• Loyola College, Chennai
• St Stephens College, Delhi
• Christ College, Bangalore
• Symbiosis College, Pune
• Delhi School of Economics

Chair: Professor Simon Hix
Recorded on 16 February 2015 in Hong Kong Theatre, Clement House.
The ubiquity of "big data" about social, political and economic phenomena has the potential to transform the way we approach social science. In this talk, Professor Benoit outlines the challenges and opportunities to social sciences caused by the rise of big data, with applications and examples. He discusses the rise of the field of data science, and whether this is a threat or a blessing for the traditional social scientific model and its ability to help us better understand society.
Kenneth Benoit (@kenbenoit) is currently Professor of Quantitative Social Research Methods at LSE. Last year I moved to Cambridge. One of the most shocking things for me here were the lunchtime stories told by science students. Some of the incidents described to me seemed nothing short of workplace bullying. The gist: if you are unable to put up with what’s coming at you, they will find someone who will. Perseverance is prioritised over wellbeing.
While there are happy PhDs and happy labs, I think it’s important to share those stories where things don’t go that smoothly. I interviewed PhDs and post docs working in labs, transcribed the interviews and asked actors to read them out.
The film might be called Social science, but it is not it is not it is not it is not it is not about social sciences. It’s about the science that happens in labs, and how that science is pretty social too.
The wonderful actors who gave the voices for my interviewees:
Charlotte Cromie, Lucy Twisleton, Caroline Thornham, Pedro Fejo, Jamie Cooper Palmer
I would like to thank the scientists who were so brave about sharing their stories. You are stars!

Editor's note: Part of the question and answer session has been omitted from the podcast owing to technical problems with the recording.
By paying more attention to what happens in actual practice before a theory is formulated – what may be called the methods of habits of theorizing – social science and sociology may be considerably improved.
Richard Swedberg is Professor of Sociology at Cornell University. His two main specialties are economic sociology and social theory.
Nigel Dodd (@nigelbdodd) is a Professor of Sociology at the London School of Economics, and Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Sociology.
For more than 50 years the BJS has represented the mainstream of sociological thinking and research. Consistently ranked highly by the ISI in Sociology, this prestigious, international journal publishes sociological scholarship of the highest quality on all aspect of the discipline, by academics from all over the world.

Professor Duncan Watts (Principal Research Scientist, Yahoo! Research) discusses how the Internet is beginning to lift long-time constraints of social science research on emergent collective behaviour, at a lecture given at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford.
Social science is often concerned with the emergence of collective behavior out of the interactions of large numbers of individuals; but in this regard it has long suffered from a severe measurement problem - namely that interactions between people are hard to measure, especially at scale, over time, and at the same time as observing behavior.
In this talk, Duncan will argue that the technological revolution of the Internet is beginning to lift this constraint. To illustrate, he will describe four examples of research that would have been extremely difficult, or even impossible, to perform just a decade ago:
(1) Using email exchange to track social networks evolving in time
(2) Using a web-based experiment to study the collective consequences of social influence on decision making
(3) Using a social networking site to study the difference between perceived and actual homogeneity of attitudes among friends
(4) Using Amazon's Mechanical Turk to study the incentives underlying 'crowd sourcing'
Although Internet-based research still faces serious methodological and procedural obstacles, Duncan proposes that the ability to study truly 'social' dynamics at individual-level resolution will have dramatic consequences for social science.
