Petabit
The petabit is a multiple of the unit bit for digital information or computer storage. The prefix peta (symbol P) is defined in the International System of Units (SI) as a multiplier of 1015 (1 quadrillion, short scale), and therefore
The petabit has the unit symbol Pbit or Pb.
The petabit is closely related to the pebibit, a unit multiple derived from the binary prefix pebi of the same order of magnitude, which is equal to 250bits = 1125899906842624bits, or approximately 13% larger than the petabit.

China develops world’s first Petabit optical disk
According to an article published on February 22 in the scientific journal Nature, a 3D nanoscale optical disk memory with petabit capacity has been developed at the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics. Optical storage disks like DVDs and Blu-rays are cheap and durable but don’t hold much data. The research team managed to increase the capacity of optical data storage by extending the planar recording architecture to three dimensions with hundreds of layers. The minimum spot size and lateral track pitch are 54nm and 70nm, respectively. This is the world's first optical disk with a petabit-level capacity, that’s 125,000 gigabytes on a single DVD-sized disk. According to an article published on February 22 in the scientific journal Nature, a 3D nanoscale optical disk memory with petabit capacity has been developed at the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics.
Optical storage disks like DVDs and Blu-rays are cheap and durable but don’t hold much data. The research team managed to increase the capacity of optical data storage by extending the planar recording architecture to three dimensions with hundreds of layers. The minimum spot size and lateral track pitch are 54nm and 70nm, respectively.
This is the world's first optical disk with a petabit-level capacity, that’s 125,000 gigabytes on a single DVD-sized disk. The research findings are expected to lead to breakthroughs in the archival data storage capabilities of data centers, by significantly increasing storage capacity while also improving energy efficiency.
