Marie de France was a medieval poet who was probably born in France and lived in England during the late 12th century. She lived and wrote at an undisclosed court but was almost certainly at least known about at the royal court of King Henry II of England. Virtually nothing is known of her life; both her given name and its geographical specification come from her manuscripts though one contemporary reference to her work and popularity remains.
Marie de France wrote a form of Anglo-Norman French and was evidently proficient in Latin and English as well. She is the author of the Lais of Marie de France. She translated Aesop's Fables from Middle English into Anglo-Norman French and wrote Espurgatoire seint Partiz, Legend of the Purgatory of St. Patrick, based upon a Latin text. Recently, she has been (tentatively) identified as the author of a saint's life, The Life of Saint Audrey. Her Lais, in particular, were and still are widely read and influenced the subsequent development of the romance genre.

This is the opening of our first feature film, Sir Lanval, an Arthurian fairytale. We shot it in just fifteen epic days in two countries on a budget of £25,000! We all had a glorious time filming in the fairytale landscapes of the Dartmoor National Park and Brittany. There were over 150 people involved, 78 scenes (aarrrgh!) children and animals including two horses, a snake, dogs, goats, a donkey called Lancelot, a raven, a truly regal falcon, our two pigs (Sherman and a heavily pregnant Blossom who subsequently had octopiglets). It was all completely bonkers, and utterly, wildly, wonderful. Thanks so much to our fabulous co-partners "Le Centre de l'Imaginaire Arthurien" and our funders, the European Regional Development Fund Intereg IV programme, with additional help from South West Scr...

The lais of Marie de France are a series of twelve short narrative Breton lais by the poet Marie de France. They are written in the Anglo-Norman and were probably composed in the late 12th century. The short, narrative poems generally focus on glorifying the concept of courtly love by the adventures of their main characters.Despite her stature in Anglo-Norman literature and medieval French literature generally, little is known of Marie herself, but it is thought that she was born in France and wrote in England. A little bit about my current favorite author, the certifiable BAMF Marie de France. I also pretend this has something to do with Arthurian Legend, which it doesn't, really. Also, I'm trying a new thing where I focus more on spewing as much information as possible in five minutes instead of recording like half an hour and editing for days. I think this way feels more natural.

On me dit "Mon fils, allez-y, sur quel bord penchent vos médailles?
