Russia says the plane did not violate Turkish airspace. The two pilots of the Russian jet ejected out of the targeted jet as it was going down in flames. While one of the Russian pilots was killed by militants in Syria, no information was available on the second. This information is still being updated in mainstream media, but the pilot was picked up by the Syrian army after he ejected. The Syrian army also rescued the rescue helicopter that went searching for the pilots, that itself came under rebel fire. The helicopter had 12 original crew on board. In the months before Russia's first strikes in Syria, Bashar al-Assad's regime was in its weakest position in over two years and Iran was front and center as its defender-in-chief. Russia had a near-total monopoly over the provision of weaponry to the Assad regime; and the Russian Navy maintained a depot in Tartus. But the trajectory of the conflict foreshadowed a diminishing Russian strategic foothold in Syria -- its last source of influence in the Middle East. Not any more. Since September 30, Russia has steadily escalated its air campaign--which has now reached the outskirts of Damascus. With near-constant fighter jet sorties, low-altitude attack helicopters, and close air support capability, Russia is changing the nature of the battle in Syria's four-and-a-half year-old civil war. It has also demonstrated some of its most advanced weapons systems, with the Su-34 "Fullback" strike fighter and the 3M-14 "Kalibr" land attack cruise missile seeing their first combat use. But Russia's military action in Syria is not all about technical sophistication. Its fighter jet air-to-ground attack limitations have been revealed in repeated incidence of 'dumb bomb' use, while extraordinary videos of cluster bombs continue to display a shockingly indiscriminate use of destructive force.

In fact, it's ISIS militants who are wearing orange as they are held captive by Syrian rebels. The rebels are mocking ISIS with slick video editing and seemingly merciless treatment of their captives. However, the video comes with a twist. The true message is revealed with the on-screen text, "Muslims are not criminals." Instead of killing the ISIS militants, the rebels then put away their guns, remove their masks and walk away. Freezing and Fighting for Aid: Syrian Refugees in Lebanon

As Syria’s civil war has raged over the past four years, more than a million refugees have fled into neighboring Lebanon. The Bekaa Valley, which serves as the main passageway between Damascus and Beirut, is now home to the largest concentration of Lebanon’s Syrian refugees. Currently in Lebanon there is one Syrian for every four Lebanese citizens — a population growth that has created a strain on the small villages and towns that bear the responsibility of hosting the refugees. Al Marj, a small city of about 15,000 in the southern end of the Bekaa Valley, is home to a refugee camp where approximately 400 families are living. VICE News traveled to the Bekaa Valley to see how the refugee population is faring as winter fully sets in, and found that the freezing temperatures are only one of their problems.
