The complete staging is available on DVD at www.MacMillanFilms.com
Now, on the surface this is a story about two Gods. But – what’s important here is that this is a lesson in power politics.
Zeus is the all-powerful tyrant – Prometheus is powerless. The drama opens with Hephaestus - with two stupid titans, named appropriately Strength and Violence – hammering Prometheus in place to punish him.
Prometheus is then visited by many who have already bowed to Zeus’s power. Soon the god of the ocean – Oceanus himself – visits to explain how real power politics work.

Prometheus Bound (Browning Translation) - audiobook
AESCHYLUS (c. 525/524 - 456/455 BC), translated by Elizabeth Barrett BROWNING (1806 - 1861)
Whether or not it was actually written by Aeschylus, as is much disputed, "Prometheus Bound" is a powerful statement on behalf of free humanity in the face of what often seem like the impersonal, implacable Forces that rule the Universe. As one of the most compelling rebel manifestos ever composed, it has appealed not only to the expected host of scholars of Greek drama, but also to a fascinatingly free-spirited array of translators, especially since the early 19th century; Percy Bysshe Shelley, Henry David Thoreau, and activist-poet Augusta Webster are among those who have tried their poetic and linguistic powers at rendering it into English. Elizabeth Barrett Browning published not one but two completely different translations of it, the first in 1833 when she was twenty-seven years old and the second eighteen years later. It is this second, far greater, translation presented here. - Summary by Expatriate

"Fire in the night signals the return of Agamemnon from 10 long years of war in Troy. Triumphant and with a captive slave, the prophetess Cassandra, in tow, the warrior king arrives home and is welcomed by Clytemnestra, wife and mother who seethes with a vengeance born of the slaughter of their daughter Iphigenia. Revenge begets revenge; fate will be fulfilled. The first great play of Aeschylus’ Oresteia trilogy, Agamemnon delivers a visceral and haunting theatrical experience."

Aeschylus’s 2,500-year-old trilogy of plays chronicles a society’s struggle to break the cycle of sacrifice, revenge, bloodshed, and punishment that plagues them. Ted Hughes’s powerful translation imbues The Oresteia with a burning contemporary relevance as it examines this struggle through the most personal microscope—the family cell—and stretches its primal and painful conflicts to their extremity. What is Justice? And what is our individual and collective responsibility to carry it out?

Eumenides is the last play of the Oresteia - the oldest surviving classical tragedy. Having avenged his father's murder by killing his mother, Orestes - now pursued by the Furies because he has committed matricide - takes refuge at the shrine of Apollo, who promises protection and sends him to seek justice from Athena. The ghost of Clytemnestra rouses the Chorus of Furies to bring her murderer to justice.
Athena, goddess of wisdom, judges between Orestes, who murdered his mother to avenge his father, and the Furies, who demand revenge for the murder of Clytemnestra. Her decision reflects the historical turning in Athens from personal retribution to community law.

Given Aeschylus' propensity for writing connected trilogies, the theme of divine retribution may connect the three. It has been argued by some that these plays would have indirectly forecast events of the Persian invasion. Base

Mystery Of The Oracle Of Delphi - World Documentaries
The Pythia, frequently known as the Oracle of Delphi, was the name of any sort of priestess throughout the history of Temple of Apollo at Delphi, situated on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, below the Castalian Spring (the brand-new priestess was picked after the death of the existing priestess). The Pythia was extensively credited for her prophecies inspired by Apollo. The Delphic oracle was set up in the 8th century BC, although it might have been existing in some form in Late Mycenaean times, from 1400 BC and was abandoned, and there is evidence that Apollo took over the shrine from an earlier dedication to Gaia.
Throughout this duration the Delphic Oracle was the most distinguished as well as reliable oracle amongst the Greeks. The oracle is just one of the best-documented spiritual institutions of the timeless Greeks. Writers which mention the oracle consist of Aeschylus, Aristotle, Clement of Alexandria, Diodorus, Diogenes, Euripides, Herodotus, Julian, Justin, Livy, Lucan, Ovid, Pausanias, Pindar, Plato, Plutarch, Sophocles, Strabo, Thucydides and also Xenophon.

The Persians (Ancient Greek: Πέρσαι, Persai, latinised as Persae) is an ancient Greek tragedy written during the Classical period of Ancient Greece by the Greek tragedian Aeschylus. The first play in the trilogy was called Phineus; it presumably dealt with Jason and the Argonauts' rescue of King Phineus from the torture that the monstrous harpies inflicted at the behest of Zeus

In The Persians, Xerxes invites the gods' enmity for his hubristic expedition against Greece in 480/79 BCE; the focus of the drama is the defeat of Xerxes' navy at Salamis. Given Aeschylus' propensity for writing connected trilogies, the theme of divine retribution may connect the three. It has been argued by some that these plays would have indirectly forecast events of the Persian invasion. Based on their presumed content, Xerxes' march through Thrace and the Persian defeat at the Battle of Plataea under Xerxes' brother-in-law Mardonius in 479, respectively, are possible candidates

BIG LOVE
by Charles Mee
directed by Tina Landau
BIG LOVE begins performances February 4, 2015 at Signature Theatre in New York City.
Fifty brides flee their fifty grooms and seek refuge in an Italian villa in this modern re-making of one of the world's oldest plays, The Danaids by Aeschylus. Mayhem ensues, complete with grooms in flight suits, women throwing themselves to the ground, occasional pop songs and romantic dances - even a bride falling in love. Reuniting Signature's 2007-08 Playwright-in-Residence Charles Mee with his longtime collaborator Tina Landau, Big Love is a colossal, poetic work that explores the hunger for independence, the burden of tradition, and the shape and size of love.
Featuring: Emmanuel Brown, Lynn Cohen, Ellen Harvey, Ryan-James Hatanaka, Christopher Innvar, Rebecca Naomi Jones, Preston Sadleir, Stacey Sargeant, Nathaniel Stampley, Bobby Steggert, Libby Winters
Creative Team: Brett Banakis (Scenic Design), Anita Yavich (Costume Design), Scott Zielinski (Lighting Design), Kevin O’Donnell (Sound Design), Austin Switser (Projection Design), Rick Sordelet (Fight Direction), Lori Lundquist (Production Stage Manager). Casting by Telsey + Company, William Cantler, CSA.

In the last interview recorded after the Greeks and Romans on the Latin American Stage conference CC’s Anastasia Bakogianni talks with Konstantinos P. Nikoloutsos (http://www.sju.edu/about-sju/faculty-staff/konstantinos-p-nikoloutsos-phd) about a Cuban reception of the myth of Electra. Virgilio Piñera reconfigured the ancient story of the tragic heroine by drawing principally on Sophocles’ play, but also on the versions of Aeschylus and Euripides as well as on modern receptions of the tale, to create his own Electra Garrigó (1941).
Konstantinos tells us about Piñera, the first playwright to situate Electra in a Cuban setting and to make radical changes to the ancient plot. Piñera tried to create a new national theatre for Cuba by going back to the origins of the art form through recourse to Greek drama rather than perpetuating the models of the Spanish colonial past. Konstantinos talks about the play’s hostile reception when it premiered in 1948, but he also tells us how, on account of the
Revolution, subsequent performances of Electra Garrigó gradually established Piñera as a major Cuban playwright and encouraged other dramatists to turn to Greek drama for inspiration.
Follow this link to watch our interview, and to learn more about the radical changes that Piñera made to the ancient story. Join us to discover why one critic described the play as ‘a spit ball thrown at Olympus’.
