Here is an excerpt from "Target Tornado," an early 1990's Weather Channel special, featuring the Tri-State Tornado.

This was the result of actually doing interviews with survivors as well as research in local newspapers and other sources. So it is probably as definitive as we are going to get almost 90 years after the fact.

This is actual film footage taken of the damage caused by the Great Tri-State Tornado which ripped through 3-states, Missouri, Illinois and Indiana on March18th,1925 Killing 695-people. This massive EF-5 Tornado came with little warning and moved at a forward speed of 73-mph, stayed on the ground for several hours and produced winds over 300-MPH. Whole towns were wiped off the face of the earth and damage was in the millions of dollars. This event ranks as one of the worst Natural Disasters in American History. This footage was taken from a crop duster plane and then from various locations on the ground. "Everybody get down to the basement, Hoyyyyy".

Southbound Interstate 81 is closed, starting around Spring Mills, due to a multivehicle accident that might involve as many as 10 vehicles, according to Berkeley County 911. Several injuries were reported, though it was unknown if any are life-threatening, a Berkeley County 911 supervisor said. The injured were being taken to Berkeley Medical Center, she said.

This article lists various tornado records. The most extreme tornado in recorded history was the Tri-State Tornado, which roared through parts of Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana on March 18, 1925. It is considered an F5, though tornadoes were not ranked on any scale in that era. It holds records for longest path length at 219 mi, longest duration at about 3.5 hours, and fastest forward speed for a significant tornado at 73 mph anywhere on Earth. In addition, it is the deadliest single tornado in United States history. It was also the second costliest tornado in history at the time, but has been surpassed by several others non-normalized. When costs are normalized for wealth and inflation, it still ranks third today.
The deadliest tornado in world history was the Daulatpur–Saturia tornado in Bangladesh on April 26, 1989, which killed approximately 1,300 people. Bangladesh has had at least 19 tornadoes in its history kill more than 100 people, almost half of the total for the rest of the world.
