Wide of entrance to polling location STORYLINE: Voters in the swing states of Florida and Virginia contended with long lines at polling centres and some waited several hours on Tuesday to cast their ballots in the 2012 US presidential election. In Miami, a line wrapped around the front of a firehouse precinct and down the sidewalk as people queued to make their voices heard in the hard-fought race for the presidency between incumbent Barack Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney. Even those who showed up early in the morning ended up waiting two to four hours or more to reach the front of the line. One Miami voter, Michael Patty, was angry about the time it took to vote. "I got here at 7:30 this morning. Just left. It's what, 9:30 right now. One hundred people have been able to vote since, that's what two and a half hours. It's ridiculous." Others were more relaxed about the wait. "I was in line four hours. I was here at 7:30 in the morning, four hours, but everything was fine. It went real smooth. I just had to wait in line like everybody else," said Ariel Alfonso. There were no early reports of significant problems with voting in the largest swing state. More than 4.5 (m) million people, about 38 percent of the electorate, had already voted in Florida, either by mail or in person, before the polls opened at 7 a.m. (1200 GMT), state officials said. Of those voters, 43 percent were Democrats and 39 percent were Republicans. There are nearly 12 (m) million registered voters in Florida. Anyone in line when the polls close at 7 p.m. local time (0000 GMT) will be allowed to vote, officials said. In San Francisco, voters woke to good weather and brought kids and dogs to their precincts.
