Illinois (i/ˌɪlᵻˈnɔɪ/ IL-i-NOY) is a state in the midwestern region of the United States. It is the 5th most populous state and 25th largest state in terms of land area, and is often noted as a microcosm of the entire country. With Chicago in the northeast, small industrial cities and great agricultural productivity in central and northern Illinois, and natural resources like coal, timber, and petroleum in the south, Illinois has a diverse economic base and is a major transportation hub. The Port of Chicago connects the state to other global ports from the Great Lakes, via the Saint Lawrence Seaway, to the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River, via the Illinois River. For decades, O'Hare International Airport has been ranked as one of the world's busiest airports. Illinois has long had a reputation as a bellwether both in social and cultural terms and politics.
Although today the state's largest population center is around Chicago in the northern part of the state, the state's European population grew first in the west, with French Canadians who settled along the Mississippi River, and gave the area the name, Illinois. After the American Revolutionary War established the United States, American settlers began arriving from Kentucky in the 1810s via the Ohio River, and the population grew from south to north. In 1818, Illinois achieved statehood. After construction of the Erie Canal increased traffic and trade through the Great Lakes, Chicago was founded in the 1830s on the banks of the Chicago River, at one of the few natural harbors on southern Lake Michigan.John Deere's invention of the self-scouring steel plow turned Illinois' rich prairie into some of the world's most productive and valuable farmlands, attracting immigrant farmers from Germany and Sweden. Railroads carried immigrants to new homes, as well as being used to ship their commodity crops out to markets.
Field artillery is a category of mobile artillery used to support armies in the field. These weapons are specialized for mobility, tactical proficiency, long range, short range and extremely long range target engagement.
Until the early 20th century, field artillery were also known as foot artillery, for while the guns were pulled by beasts of burden (often horses), the gun crews would usually march on foot, thus providing fire support mainly to the infantry. This was in contrast to horse artillery, whose emphasis on speed while supporting cavalry units necessitated lighter guns and crews riding on horseback.
Whereas horse artillery has been superseded by self-propelled artillery, field artillery has survived to this day both in name and mission, albeit with motor vehicles towing the guns, carrying the crews and transporting the ammunition. Modern artillery has also advanced to rapidly deployable wheeled and tracked vehicles and precision delivered munitions capable of striking targets at ranges between 15 and 300 kilometers.
A civil war is an armed conflict within a nation.
The term "The Civil War" redirects here. See List of civil wars for a longer list of specific conflicts.
For the 17th century Civil War in England, see English Civil War.
For the 19th century Civil War in the United States, see American Civil War.
Civil war may also refer to:
Artillery is a class of large military weapons built to fire munitions far beyond the range and power of infantry's small arms. Early artillery development focused on the ability to breach fortifications, and led to heavy, fairly immobile siege engines. As technology improved, lighter, more mobile field artillery developed for battlefield use. This development continues today; modern self-propelled artillery vehicles are highly mobile weapons of great versatility providing the largest share of an army's total firepower.
In its earliest sense, the word artillery referred to any group of soldiers primarily armed with some form of manufactured weapon or armour. Since the introduction of gunpowder and cannon, the word "artillery" has largely meant cannon, and in contemporary usage, it usually refers to shell-firing guns, howitzers, mortars, rockets and guided missiles. In common speech, the word artillery is often used to refer to individual devices, along with their accessories and fittings, although these assemblages are more properly called "equipments". However, there is no generally recognised generic term for a gun, howitzer, mortar, and so forth: the United States uses "artillery piece", but most English-speaking armies use "gun" and "mortar". The projectiles fired are typically either "shot" (if solid) or "shell" (if not). "Shell" is a widely used generic term for a projectile, which is a component of munitions.
Anti-aircraft warfare or counter-air defence is defined by NATO as "all measures designed to nullify or reduce the effectiveness of hostile air action." They include ground-and air-based weapon systems, associated sensor systems, command and control arrangements and passive measures (e.g. barrage balloons). It may be used to protect naval, ground, and air forces in any location. However, for most countries the main effort has tended to be 'homeland defence'. NATO refers to airborne air defence as counter-air and naval air defence as anti-aircraft warfare. Missile defence is an extension of air defence as are initiatives to adapt air defence to the task of intercepting any projectile in flight.
In some countries, such as Britain and Germany during the Second World War, the Soviet Union and NATO's Allied Command Europe, ground based air defence and air defence aircraft have been under integrated command and control. However, while overall air defence may be for homeland defence including military facilities, forces in the field, wherever they are, invariably deploy their own air defence capability if there is an air threat. A surface-based air defence capability can also be deployed offensively to deny the use of airspace to an opponent.

I was looking for Al Capone's at Mt. Camel Cemetery in Hillside Il. when I came across this somewhat strange memorial. The first thing I saw was the artillery pieces, cannons aren't something one usually sees in a cemetery. So I wandered over and found this deceased veterans tribute. Never did Al's grave but I'll be back. Another ChiTownView produced by Mike Beyer and presented by MindsiMedia.Visit our web portal at http://www.mindsimedia.info/

On February 14th, Col. Harold Knudsen draws on his research to present a more modern, revisionist view of Longstreet the general. James Longstreet, the man Robert E. Lee called his "old war horse", was the Confederacy's senior Lieutenant General. And perhaps its most controversial general. His service with Lee, his alleged "slowness" at Gettysburg, his actions while under Braxton Bragg at Chattanooga, all sparked postwar criticism, as did Longstreet's backing of the Republican Party and Reconstruction. Lt. Col. Harold Knudsen is an Illinois native. His career spans twenty five years of active duty service, and includes career artillery, command and staff Army schools and colleges. He has many years of tactical experience in the integration of fire support into maneuver plans and fire c...
This video is about the second half of the Prairie Grove Battlefield Driving Tour. I was a little hesitant going on the gravel road at first, as you can tell from the tone in my voice. I did this on Sunday January 31, 2016 The descriptions of these stops are taken from the pamphlet that was given to me at the Visitor's Center titled "Self Guided Driving Tour of the Prairie Grove Battlefield" The Stops are as follows: Stop 8: Illinois River Ford - Northeast of this location is the main ford of the Illinois River. General Herron crossed with a small number of troops, only to be driven back by Confederate artillery fire from the ridge. Learning of a northern ford, the Federals placed Captain David Murphy's Missouri battery on Crawford's Hill to the north, and began pounding the ridge with...
The year 2012 represents the 150th Anniversary of the battles fought at Shiloh in 1862. From Thursday March 29th, 2012 to Sunday April1st, 2012, Civil War reenactors from across the country participated in the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee. This movie contains pictures and videos of the following battles reenacted: Battle of Shiloh Church, Battle of the Hornet's Nest, Ruggles Line, and Grant and Buell's Counterattack. I personally am with the Confederate Artillery reenacting group called Stanford's Battery based out of Chicago, Illinois and is the main group I film, but I get most of the battle going on in the background as well. Be sure to visit Stanford's Battery on Facebook and at our website: http://stanfordsbattery.webs.com/ . We are always looking for recruit...

Earl R. Swanson was a farm boy from East Lynn, Ill., when he enrolled in Advanced ROTC as a freshman at the University of Illinois in 1939. Upon graduation in 1943, he trained with the 592nd Field Artillery Battalion attached to the 106th Infantry in Camp Atterbury, Ind. When the 106th was being deployed to Europe, they had a surplus of F.A. officers, so Swanson was sent to infantry school in Camp Blanding, Fla. In July of 1945, he became a replacement officer in Cannon Company of the 161st Regiment of the 25th Division, the "Tropic Lightning" Division, in the Philippines. Their mission was to "clean up" in the Philippines and prepare for the invasion of Japan. After Japan's surrender, Capt. Swanson served in the occupation of Japan until returning to the States in May 1946. He remained in...
