Five years ago, Dilma Rousseff convincingly won Brazil's presidential election, inheriting a resource-rich economy, a reduction in poverty and a rise in literacy.
Fast-forward to today, the economy is heading for recession, unemployment is rising, prices are soaring, and a corruption scandal at state energy company Petrobras which dates back to Rousseff's time as chair is fueling threats of impeachment.
Despite there being no evidence linking Rousseff to the bribes-for-contracts scheme, an independent investigation has alleged that bribes worth $2bn were paid to secure contracts with the firm.
Sapping business and consumer confidence, the country's debt has reached a record high - up from $198bn in 2009 to $347bn today. The currency has tumbled by more than 50 percent and inflation is rising at almost eight percent.
Triggering widespread anger at the sitting president, large-scale demonstrations have rocked the country, with tens of thousands demanding Rousseff step down.
Carlos Pio, a political economist from Brasilia joins Counting the Cost to discuss what is next for the Latin American giant.

5 Steps to Kickstart Brazilian Growth
The reelection of President Dilma Rousseff (albeit by a small margin) suggests that a majority of Brazilians still believes she can steer the country out of its current malaise.
But what should be her strategy?
This is the focus of our new working paper authored by Samuel George in our Washington office in collaboration with Cornelius Fleischhaker of The World Bank.
Over the last 20 years, Brazil has taken crucial strides towards achieving its weighty, if elusive, economic potential.
When the country rapidly emerged from the Global Recession of 2008-2009, Brazil's momentum seemed unstoppable.
More recently, however, the country has hit growing pains.

Official figures released by the Brazilian government show that the country's economy has entered recession.
The data indicated that Brazil’s economy contracted nearly two percent between April and June compared with the previous quarter. The country’s economy has also shrunk by two-point-six percent compared with a year earlier. Meanwhile, household spending and the industrial sectors have fallen while unemployment and taxes have risen. Two quarters of economic contraction in a row is technically tantamount to plunging into recession. Brazil is the world’s seventh largest economy. But it has been adversely affected by corruption scandals and falling commodity prices.

With the Brazilian economic crisis deepening and the Real under attack, Nicole Elliott, Private Investor, discusses the outlook ahead for the Brazilian currency and the economy.
Brazil: Deeper recession ahead?
Elliott notes that the government spending in Brazil is out of control and with the President refusing to cut the welfare for the lower middle class, a larger budget deficit might be in sight.
On inflation, she comments that the Brazilian inflation is highest in the world, standing at 14.25%. The economy was in recession last year and remains, and might be in for a deeper recession in 2015.
Brazilian bonds – an opportunity for investors?
On the Real, Elliott highlights the charts for the Real versus the Dollar, noting that the parabolic move in the currency won’t parabolic forever, and further suggests that investors should prepare to invest in Brazilian Bonds.

Brazil's economy. The world - and Latin America - increasingly seems to revolve around Brazil, especially with respect to economic, social and development issues. The South American giant has become a key reference point for efforts to reduce poverty, promote gender equality and export knowledge, for example.
Brazil leads many global rankings: it is the world's sixth largest economy, the fifth largest country, the second world leader in terms of number of airports and the country with the most animal species. But perhaps most importantly, since 2003, 20 million Brazilians have escaped from poverty. The Brazil sem Miseria program seeks to end poverty by 2015.

Brazil's formerly robust economy has fallen into recession, according to government data released on Friday.
Gross domestic product dropped 0.6 percent in the second quarter, in large part because of soft consumer spending.
Analysts said the economy also suffered because investors are holding off, waiting to see how the October presidential election changes the economic climate.
Less business activity during the World Cup due to too many employees taking time off from work also contributed to weak industrial output.
The bad economic data is the last thing President Dilma Rousseff's struggling re-election campaign needed.
The slump gives more ammunition to Rousseff's rivals ahead of a October 5 presidential election vote, particularly for environmentalist Marina Silva, who is now leading polls and tapping into the widespread frustrations of many Brazilians, angst that fuelled last year's massive anti-government protests.
"I think it's devastating. I didn't vote for Dilma in 2010 because I expected this to happen," said French teacher Gisela Lacerda.
Still, Rousseff, a trained economist, and her team argued that Brazil's souring economic scenario wasn't their fault and even question whether the country is in recession.
They blame the slowdown on continuing global problems that have dampened appetite for Brazil's exports and a severe drought that has sent energy prices soaring for industry and consumers alike, as most of the country is powered by hydroelectricity.
