The Ancient Greeks: Crucible of Civilization - Episode 1: Revolution
It was perhaps the most spectacular flourishing of imagination and achievement in recorded history. In the Fourth and Fifth Centuries BC, the Greeks built an empire that stretched across the Mediterranean from Asia to Spain. They laid the foundations of modern science, politics, warfare and philosophy, and produced some of the most breathtaking art and architecture the world has ever seen. This series, narrated by Liam Neeson, recounts the rise, glory, demise and legacy of the empire that marked the dawn of Western civilization. The story of this astonishing civilization is told through the lives of heroes of ancient Greece. The latest advances in computer and television technology rebuild the Acropolis, recreate the Battle of Marathon and restore the grandeur of the Academy, where Socrates, Plato and Aristotle forged the foundation of Western though. The series combines dramatic storytelling, stunning imagery, new research and distinguished scholarship to render classical Greece gloriously alive.
EPISODE 1: THE REVOLUTION
The first part tells the story of the troubled birth of the world's first democracy, ancient Athens, through the life of an Athenian nobleman, Cleisthenes. In the brutal world of the 5th century BC, the Athenians struggle against a series of tyrants and their greatest rival, Sparta, to create a new "society of equals." This documentary makes history entertaining as well as educational. Beautifully photographed, using reenactments, paintings, maps, pottery, metalwork, and "living statues" to take the viewer on a vicarious journey through ancient Greece. Episode one, The Revolution, begins at the dawn of democracy in 508 B.C., with the revolution of the common people against aristocratic rule. The film then travels further back in time to chronicle the key events leading up to the revolution. As the camera roams ancient ruins, the Greek countryside, and old stone roads, the viewer learns that the inhabitants of Greece once lived in mud houses with no sewage and frequently fell prey to disease and warfare. Unable to write, they memorized their works of literature in order to pass them on to the next generation. Over time, their hardship and learning whetted their appetite for freedom. After rule by tyrants of the aristocratic class and a struggle for power, Cleisthenes (570-507 B.C.), himself an aristocrat, sided with the common people of Athens and brought democracy into being. From this beginning, western democracy developed and flourished. All the while during their early maturation into a Mediterranean power, Athens and other city-states had to live with the threat of war from expansionist Sparta as well as the vast Persian Empire. But democracy had taken root, and it proved in the long run to be a greater force than the mightiest of armies. The program closes on the eve of the new society's first great test: invasion by the mighty empire of Persia.

Ancient Greece, the cradle of modern Europe. Around 3000 years ago, the cultural foundations of western civilisation were laid right here, on the shores of the Mediterranean. It’s the birthplace of democracy, where great thinkers forged the beginnings of scientific reasoning, where theatre was turned into mass entertainment, and where the Olympic Games began. Imaginative animation, stunning visuals and an entertaining narrative combine in an extraordinary exploration of Greece and the rise of an ancient super-power that would leave a permanent mark on society. SBS documentary from Germany, in German & Greek, so be kind with the part where ancient Greeks speak German... :)
........................................................
The legacy of the Greeks is under assault today thus deserves defence and celebration for the simple reason that much of what we are is the result of that brilliant examination of human life first begun by the Greeks; as Jacob Burckhardt says, "We see with the eyes of the Greeks and use their phrases when we speak." We must listen to the Greeks not because they will give us answers, but because they first identified the questions and problems, and they knew too where the answers must come from: the minds of free human beings who have control over their own lives. And this, finally, is the greatest good we have received from the Greeks: the gift of freedom.
The Greeks are accused by some of stealing their achievements from Egyptians and Babylonians, of oppressing their wives and daughters, and of hypocritically speculating about freedom while holding slaves. And that is the greatest irony: the spirit of criticism that among so many academics has fossilized into a pose has its origins nowhere but among the Greeks, who were the first to question critically everything from the gods to political power to their very selves, the first to live what Socrates called “the examined life”.
As Victor Hanson and John Heath write, “Not one of the multicultural classicists really wishes to live under indigenous pre–Colombian ideas of government, Arabic protocols for female behaviour, Chinese canons of medical ethics, Islamic traditions of church and state, African approaches to science, Japanese ideas of race, Indian social castes, or Native American notions of private property.”
Classic Greek culture has come under attack precisely because its achievement, extended into history, is what defines the West and makes it distinct. What is valuable in the much abused Western tradition, hence the examined life, the pursuit of truth, the dialogue about the place of the individual in the larger group, comes from the Greeks. Humanism, reason, the pursuit of knowledge and the arts, moderation and civic responsibility, all come from the Greeks.
The failings of the Greeks, including not living up to their own ideals, are the failings of humanity everywhere. But their ideals, still alive today, led to the recognition of a common humanity that was more important than gender or social status, more profound than local or tribal affiliations. Without this insight, slavery might never have been abolished in the West, women might never have been granted equality, and the liberal notion that all humans possess innate rights merely as a virtue of being human would never have existed.

Even though Greece is a predominately Christian Orthodox country, there are some people in this country who still believe in the 12 Gods of mount Olympus, deriving from Greek Mythology. According to unofficial sources they amount to a couple of hundreds and present themselves as members of the unofficial so-called "Greek Religion". This is a mixture of beliefs that combine paganism, the idea of spiritual connection with nature and a kind of fixation to the Ancient Greek ideals. Over the past decades they have founded various different groups, the oldest and most popular among them being the "Greek Naionals High Commissioned Council (GNHCC) - Υπατο Συμβούλιο Ελλήνων Εθνικών," founded 30 years ago.

The Bizarre World of Ancient Greece - BBC Documentary
The Greek civilization is considered by historians as the first one in the history of mankind. A study of their archeological remains confirms that the ancient Greeks were a highly developed community. Their lifestyle and inventions indicate a high sense of order and aesthetics.
The ancient Greeks built houses along the shores of the land. They were dependent on the Aegean seas for their food supplies and other trade. Traveling brought them in contact with other cultures. They gained exposure to various agricultural methods and different types of metal work.
Different communities arose from the ancient Greece civilization. Some of them were the Aegean, Achaeans and the Pelasgians. Crete was the center of the Aegean civilization and was the dominant community in 2500 BC. The Achaeans made Mycenae their capital. A volcano caused the destruction of the Aegean community around 1400bc. The Mycenaeans absorbed the culture of the Aegean community.
In course of time, Greek settlements were transformed into city-states or poleis and each city-state was ruled by a king. The government was usually unstable due to the tyranny of the aristocrats. Democracy was hardly ever practiced.
The ancient Greeks were very keen on sports. The great athletic contest called the Olympic games began in 776 BC, which marked the beginning of the rise of the Greek civilization. At that point of time, Greek ideas were greatly influenced by many different foreign cultures. Artists were focusing on recreating human figures of mythology. The civilization saw its zenith around 500 BC. Excellence was seen in the fields of philosophy, art and literature. Wars with other civilizations began in 490 BC and the superior Greek armies overran their opponents to establish their supremacy. The ancient age of Greek civilization saw the birth of great philosophers like Pluto, Socrates, and the great emperor, Alexander.
The ancient Greeks were pagan. They prayed to the various elements of nature. They believed that favorable climate and good crops occurred when the gods were pleased. When things turned bad, they attributed it to the wrath of the gods. They performed sacrifices to appease the enraged gods.
Ancient Greeks were essentially simple-minded folks who left behind a beautiful legacy of art, philosophy and literature.

Dr Michael Scott, uncovers the strange, alien world of the ancient Greeks. He asks who were these people who gave us democracy, architecture, philosophy, language, literature and sport? Part 1. We visit ancient cities and battlefields, great ruins and wild countryside, all in his search to uncover how the ancient Greeks thought and lived. What he finds is that ancient Greece was a seething tornado of strange, unsettling and downright outrageous customs and beliefs, inhabited by a people who could be as brutal as they were brilliant. Part 2. We explore the legacies of the Ancient Greeks, what they have given us today, and asks why these legacies have lasted through time. Democracy, art, architecture, philosophy, science, sport, theatre - all can be traced back to ancient Greece. Travelling across the ancient Greek world, from Athens to Olympia, Macedon, Turkey and Sicily, Michael discovers why the ancient Greeks were so successful, why their culture and way of life spread across continents and through time and why they still have such a powerful hold over our imaginations today.

FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY
This video belongs to BBC. No Copyright Infringement intended.

What do Japanese women think of dating foreign men? I interviewed 5 Japanese women in this video and asked for their opinions.
I got diverse results. One of them have a typical americentric view of western men while the other are more open to different nationalities.
They have divided opinions about marrying non-Japanese men. Some of them prefer Japanese men because of their cultural values or lack of parents' acceptance.
I also asked them what they thought of Japanese men to compare to their views of non-Japanese men. The results were quite interesting.
Another interesting point is that their travel experience seems to have little to do with their openness. This might be another area to explore.
The questions I asked are:
- Would you date a foreign guy?
- Are you interested in any particular nationalities?
- Do you have any racial preferences?
- Would you marry a foreign guy?
- How would you like to be approached?
- What do Japanese guys lack these days?
- Is there anything you like about Japanese guys?
- Have you ever been abroad and where?

Talking to Giorgos Papandreou, former Greek Prime Minister (Harald Schumann on the trail - the complete interview). For better comprehension, we recommend to activate English subtitles in the player. The interview was recorded in September 2014. Excerpts of the interview have been used in the film "The Trail Of The Troika"s by Harald Schumann and Arpad Bondy.
Georgios Andreas Papandreou (Greek: Γεώργιος Ανδρέας Παπανδρέου; born 16 June 1952), commonly anglicised to George, served as Prime Minister of Greece from 2009 to 2011.
Belonging to a political dynasty of long standing, he served under his father, then-prime minister Andreas Papandreou as Minister for National Education and Religious Affairs (1988–1989 and 1994–1996) and Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1999 to 2004. Papandreou was leader of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) party from February 2004 until March 2012, and President of the Socialist International since January 2006.
On 6 October 2009, George Papandreou became the 182nd Prime Minister of Greece. Following his grandfather Georgios Papandreou and his father Andreas Papandreou, he was the third member of the Papandreou family to serve as the country's prime minister. He resigned on 11 November 2011 during the Greek government debt crisis to make way for a national unity government.

The coalition of Tsipras' leftist Syriza party and the right-wing nationalist Independent Greeks has a majority of just three seats in parliament, and pro-European opposition part

Lyrics: PLAYMEN - Stand by me now
No fancy cars
no trips to mars
All i need is you
Oh girl i know
you need me too
Don't say goodbye
don't say you'll leave
cause life's a game for two
The love i've got
for you is true
Stand by me now
Now that i need to show you love
I don't know how
You gotta stand by me now
Give me a chance to prove
i'm worthy to be around
Stand by me now
No drugs or fame
no pink champagne
All i want is you
Deep down i know
you want me too
Dont say these words
Dont leave me now
Cause life's a game for two
The love i've got
for you is true
Stand by me now
Now that i need to show you love
I don't know how
You gotta stand by me now
Give me a chance to prove
i'm worthy to be around
Stand by me now

Lyrics: PLAYMEN - Stand by me now
No fancy cars
no trips to mars
All i need is you
Oh girl i know
you need me too
Don't say goodbye
don't say you'll leave
cause life's a game for two
The love i've got
for you is true
Stand by me now
Now that i need to show you love
I don't know how
You gotta stand by me now
Give me a chance to prove
i'm worthy to be around
Stand by me now
No drugs or fame
no pink champagne
All i want is you
Deep down i know
you want me too
Dont say these words
Dont leave me now
Cause life's a game for two
The love i've got
for you is true
Stand by me now
Now that i need to show you love
I don't know how
You gotta stand by me now
Give me a chance to prove
i'm worthy to be around
Stand by me now

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras' governing majority is looking fragile as crunch time approaches for a pension reform that will test his resolve to impose painful measures to satisfy Athens' international creditors.
The coalition of Tsipras' leftist Syriza party and the right-wing nationalist Independent Greeks has a majority of just three seats in parliament, and pro-European opposition parties that voted for Greece's latest bailout are publicly refusing him any help on the toxic pension issue.
The overhaul, which must deliver savings worth 1 percent of gross domestic product or 1.8 billion euros next year, is the most sensitive of a raft of reforms demanded by the euro zone and the International Monetary Fund in return for up to 85 billion euros in aid in the country's third bailout since 2010.
Trade unions have staged two 24-hour general strikes against further pension cuts and Tsipras has promised there will be no across-the-board reduction in benefits for retirees.
Tsipras says most of the savings will be achieved by ending early retirement under a law enacted last month, leaving about 600 million euros more to be saved.
"Hell, there must be ways to find those 600 million euros. It's not 6 billion, it's 600 million," he said in a television interview this week after critics said he would struggle to avoid a new round of unpopular pension cuts.
Instead the government is proposing to increase social security contributions, mostly by employers - a move the lenders warn would deter job creation and set back economic recovery, setting the stage for tough negotiations next month.
WARS OF WORDS
As the deadline approaches, Tsipras launched an attack on the IMF this week, saying it was making unconstructive demands on both sides and should make up its mind whether it wanted to stay in the Greek program.
That in turn triggered another war of words with Germany, the biggest European creditor, which insists the global lender must stay in the program to enforce tough discipline and to reassure German lawmakers.
Sources in Syriza say some deputies are unhappy at the prospect of a reform that will entail merging the country's multiple underfunded pension funds and reducing state subsidies to the system and is bound to lead to lower benefits for many.
No one knows how many, if any, of the grumblers may refuse to back the law.
Aides say Tsipras will negotiate hard with the lenders but ultimately will face down any opposition in his own party and push the pension reform through parliament so that Greece can start negotiations with the euro zone on debt relief in March.
Tsipras dismissed talk of a wider coalition in the state TV interview, saying his 153 seats in parliament were more solid than the 225-seat majority which had initially supported a 2011-12 interim government of technocrat Lucas Papademos, which crumbled within six months.
Political sources say the prime minister has put out feelers to a small opposition party, the Union of the Centre, which has hinted its nine lawmakers might let the legislation pass.
Despite their tough public stance, other opposition parties could well abstain or absent themselves in sufficient numbers to ensure passage of the pension bill, the sources said.
"No one has an interest in having another election now," said a senior political source, noting that the conservative New Democracy is in disarray ahead of a leadership election next week, and the center-left PASOK party is wary of taking any new responsibility for unpopular austerity measures.
The source said that while his "central scenario" was that Tsipras would ram the pension reform through, there was a risk that the prime minister would decide to play for time, delaying any reform until pressure mounted and the threat of another destabilizing Greek crisis began to affect financial markets.
A source on the lenders' side said creditors could also play things long to increase reform leverage over Greece and push back debt relief talks until after sensitive regional elections in Germany and a general election in Slovakia in March.
While Tsipras remains Greece's dominant politician, with no challenger in sight, Athens is awash with rumors of an "ecumenical government" combining technocrats with consensual politicians if he loses his majority.

Set during the rule of the late Roman Republic and the early Roman Empire, Rome: Total War is a real-time tactics and turn-based strategy game that takes place across Europe, North Africa and the Near East. The player assumes control of one of three Roman families with eight other factions playable outside the main campaign. The main goal of the campaign is to become emperor of Rome by conquering fifty provinces with the support of the people before capturing Rome itself although a short campaign is also available wherein success depends on besting other factions in a race to seize control of 15 provinces.
At the campaign’s beginning the player must choose from the Julii, Brutii and Scipii families, each with their own advantages, specialities and controlled regions. Then the player must work on expanding his empire on the turn-based campaign map, settling any conflicts that arise by commanding vast armies in real-time 3D battles. Each faction’s leader and all their of-age male heirs are controllable and can be used either to govern cities or as generals of armies, providing their own unique abilities as well as a morale boost to soldiers under their command. Agents can also be hired, with their own specific abilities and ancillaries. Family members will develop traits depending on their actions during battles and the campaign map and these can have both negative and positive effects.
During the turn-based part of the game the player must manage diplomacy, develop infrastructure, recruit and move armies and keep public order in check by controlling tax rates and organising gladiatorial games. Players can build and upgrade a variety of buildings in their cities including buildings focussed on keeping the populous happy, such as amphitheatres and temples, buildings that improve a city’s economy and financial contributions, such as markets and buildings used to recruit and train new military unit types such as archery ranges and stables. The player’s empire can either be expanded by recruiting large armies in owned cities and utilising these, along with family-hired mercenaries to take control of enemy cities by force or through more diplomatic means such as offering an alliance via an agent. The more cities a player controls, the greater their geographical dominance and the more taxes they can garner from the increased population. However, the more cities a player controls, the more difficult they are to keep in check. Dissatisfied populaces may choose to rebel, relinquishing the player’s control of a city and creating a rebel army that will need to be quashed in order to retake the settlement.
The real-time battle system has been improved from previous titles in a number of ways. The campaign map and battle maps are now integrated; meaning that any environmental features present in the location the battle takes place in on the campaign map – such as snowy mountains – will be present in the battle and can be used to gain a military advantage. A wide variety of faction specific unit types ranging from cavalry through to archers and artillery. Each unit has their own special abilities, formations and weak points to be considered when devising and implementing tactics. Morale is also critical a critical aspect of units; when a unit’s morale drops too low it will rout in fear but if a brave and decisive general is nearby the unit’s morale will be bolstered, affording them a greater chance of success. A number of factors affect a unit’s morale level including fatigue, terrain type, and intimidation by enemy forces, the number of casualties sustained and whether they have a perceptible tactical advantage over their enemy.
There are also a number of historical battles such as the Siege of Sparta in 272 BC for the player to play through outside of the campaign. The player usually takes the side of the outnumbered or disadvantaged army and must fight hard in order to win.
Custom multiplayer battles can also be fought online.
The third title in the Total War series, Rome was released on 22nd September by the Creative Assembly and Activision.

The Western world is built on the wisdom and traditions of the ancient Greeks, who uncovered the fundamental principles that established the basics of modern technology. Explore their contributions to geometry, astronomy, and physics and take a close-up look at how they applied their knowledge: Thales predicted an eclipse, Pythagoras discovered mathematical correlation between a musical instrument's string length and its tone, Archimedes developed laws of mechanics, and a group of 90 priests made well-informed educated guesses about many things.

For five years Greece has been mired in economic crisis, haunted by the spectre of expulsion from the eurozone.
A Greek exit seemed closer than ever this summer until a last-minute deal with the creditors - the international Monetary Fund (IMF), the European Central Bank and other eurozone countries - kept Greece in, but at the cost of more painful austerity measures and a humiliating further loss in sovereignty.
The grim figures of Greece's great depression are well-known: a 25 percent contraction in the economy; youth unemployment at over 50 percent.
But while almost all Greeks have stories of hardship and anxiety to tell, life does go on.
Al Jazeera's Barnaby Phillips heads to the Athenian middle-class neighbourhood of Nea Smyrni to see how Greeks are getting by, and hear their hopes and fears for the future.
