Gnosticism (from Ancient Greek: γνωστικός gnostikos, "having knowledge", from γνῶσις gnōsis, knowledge) is a modern term categorizing a collection of ancient religions whose adherents shunned the material world – which they viewed as created by the demiurge – and embraced the spiritual world. Gnostic ideas influenced many ancient religions that teach that gnosis (variously interpreted as knowledge, enlightenment, salvation, emancipation or 'oneness with God') may be reached by practicing philanthropy to the point of personal poverty, sexual abstinence (as far as possible for hearers, entirely for initiates) and diligently searching for wisdom by helping others. However, practices varied among those who were Gnostic.
In Gnosticism, the world of the demiurge is represented by the underworld, which is associated with matter, flesh, time and, more particularly, an imperfect, ephemeral world. The world of God is represented by the upper world and is associated with the soul and perfection. The world of God is eternal and not part of the physical. It is impalpable and timeless.

Gnostics (derived from the Greek word gnosis - meaning `knowledge') felt that they could get to know God, and their own soul, going a step beyond faith. Their message, and the words of the `Gnostic Gospels' were buried in the sand of the Egyptian desert. Some scholars now believe these scriptures to be just as authentic, if not more so, than ...

Melvyn Bragg and his guests discuss Gnosticism, a sect associated with early Christianity. The Gnostics divided the universe into two domains: the visible world and the spiritual one. They believed that a special sort of knowledge, or gnosis, would enable them to escape the evils of the physical world and allow them access to the higher spiritual realm. The Gnostics were regarded as heretics by many of the Church Fathers, but their influence was important in defining the course of early Christianity. A major archaeological discovery in Egypt in the 1940s, when a large cache of Gnostic texts were found buried in an earthenware jar, enabled scholars to learn considerably more about their beliefs. The Gnostic idea, that man has the capacity to rise above his worldly fate to become a spiritual being, even to be `as God' was the heretical centrepiece of Renaissance philiosophy. This spiritual notion was forced underground by by the Catholic Church's opposition, and into the world of magic and alchemy. However a modern millionaire, Joost Ritman, is an example of how Gnoticism continues to defy the passage of time, to re-emerge in every spiritual era."
The term “gnosticism” is derived from the Greek word gnosis, meaning "knowledge", because secret knowledge was so important to the Gnostics. Gnosticism forced its way into prominence during the first few centuries, and the Apostles and early Christian leaders opposed this heresy. In fact, much of the early Christian writings were focused on addressing the threat of Gnosticism. It is important for us to understand the Gnostics and their relationship to early Christianity because it will help us to better understand certain New Testament verses that are written in direct opposition to Gnosticism. It is also important to understand this heresy, so that we can identify it's influence on the modern Church, and so that we can avoid repeating their mistakes. The Gnostics were a heretical moveme...
One of the chief researchers and proponents of Gnosticism in the last decade has been Andrew Phillip Smith. His books and articles have crystalized the ancient heresy for a modern understanding. He discusses in a spanning interview his three new works that further bring light to Gnostic manifestations throughout history. He relates the latest scholarship on several issues like the plight of the Mandaeans, the libertine habits of Alexandrian Gnostics, the usefulness of the term “Gnosticism,” and the notion that the Cathars did indeed exist and were not just wayward Catholics. And much more. Astral Guest—Andrew Phillip Smith, author of The Secrets History of the Gnostics, The Lost Teachings of the Cathars, and The Gnostic 6.

To the question "Did a good God create a world of pain" they replied that there was a crack in the universe. The first 20th century scholar to read the Gnostics was C.G.Jung - their `Gnosis', or knowledge, was to him spiritual self-knowledge. In this programme, scholars debate the relevence of the Gnostic `pulse' for modern man."
History is important. It tells us who we are because of who we have been. If you distort that you distort your concept of reality. It is important to know who others are too, and why we are here. You know when you care for someone because you have a past with them and you get to know them. We need to get to know who we have been, who we said we were and who we were not allowed to see because they didn't want to blow their cover. We are being controlled by people who have neatly and completely blinded us. Do you want to know? Would you even allow your mind to hear the truth?
