English/Nat
South African president Nelson Mandela has paid tribute to Joe Slovo - the man once known to supporters of apartheid as public enemy number one.
Slovo, former leader of the South African communist party, died Friday of cancer at the age of 68.
He was the first white member of the African National Congress's leadership and became a minister in South Africa's first multi-racial government.
His death was officially announced by Mandela, who says his close friend will be honoured with a national day of mourning and a state funeral.
Joe Slovo died in his sleep at his Johannesburg home shortly before 0100 GMT.
He had been suffering from bone-marrow cancer, but despite his illness continued to play a crucial role during the negotiations which brought about democracy in South Africa..
At a press conference held Friday, President Mandela officially announced Slovo's death and paid tribute to his lifelong friend.
SOUNDBITE:
"As announced earlier today, comrade Joe Slovo peacefully went to sleep for eternity at about three o'clock this morning. He was a man who had never known any real rest during his life."
SUPER CAPTION: Nelson Mandela, President of South Africa.
Following the April elections, Slovo was awarded the job of Housing Minister in Mandela's government.
The post made him responsible for carrying out ANC promises to build one (m) million houses over five years for the millions of blacks living in squatter camps.
Slovo, who came from Lithuania, became known for his work for defendants in political trials in the 1940s.
At the same time, he was becoming active in the Communist Party, the first formal South African political party to welcome black members.
When the Apartheid rulers banned the ANC and the Communist Party in 1960, Slovo and Mandela embarked on a sabotage campaign.
After the arrests of Mandela and other ANC leaders, Slovo fled into exile as chief of staff of the ANC's military wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe.
While in exile, Slovo worked for both the ANC and the Communist Party, eventually returning to South Africa under an amnesty in 1990.
Mandela told reporters that Slovo will be dearly missed by the nation - as well as by himself.
SOUNDBITE:
"His departure is a loss to the nation, the government, the ANC, SACP, and the rest of the democratic movement - and it a loss to be personally. I visited him yesterday evening and though he was under tremendous strain, we all drew confidence from the calm and brave manner with which he carried himself. Over the past months, he acquitted himself extremely well as minister, inspired as ever to ensure that South Africans - especially the very poor - had enjoyed a better life
SUPER CAPTION: Nelson Mandela, President of South Africa.
In one of his last interviews before his death, Slovo told APTV how he wished to be remembered.
SOUNDBITE:
"I think I would like to be remembered as a person who did not waste his life, who tried his best to contribute what I have hopefully contributed to the transformation that is taking place. I'm going to die...you know, life is terminal illness, so we are all going to die. In my case, I am going to die with the satisfaction that I've had a rare experience. That I started in the early 40s when there was absolutely no hope. I have been involved in every phase of our struggle, in the passive resistance campaign, in the armed struggle, in the negotiating process and now in government and then as Housing Minister. What more do you want out of life?"
SUPER CAPTION: Joe Slovo
A state funeral and day of mourning are planned in honour of Slovo on January 15th. The service will be held at Johannesburg's city hall.
