http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quartz
Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the Earth's continental crust, after feldspar. It is made up of a continuous framework of SiO4 silicon–oxygen tetrahedra, with each oxygen being shared between two tetrahedra, giving an overall formula SiO2.
There are many different varieties of quartz, several of which are semi-precious gemstones. Especially in Europe and the Middle East, varieties of quartz have been since antiquity the most commonly used minerals in the making of jewelry and hardstone carvings...
Piezoelectricity
Quartz crystals have piezoelectric properties; they develop an electric potential upon the application of mechanical stress. An early use of this property of quartz crystals was in phonograph pickups. One of the most common piezoelectric uses of quartz today is as a crystal oscillator. The quartz clock is a familiar device using the mineral. The resonant frequency of a quartz crystal oscillator is changed by mechanically loading it, and this principle is used for very accurate measurements of very small mass changes in the quartz crystal microbalance and in thin-film thickness monitors...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_oscillator
A crystal oscillator is an electronic oscillator circuit that uses the mechanical resonance of a vibrating crystal of piezoelectric material to create an electrical signal with a very precise frequency. This frequency is commonly used to keep track of time (as in quartz wristwatches), to provide a stable clock signal for digital integrated circuits, and to stabilize frequencies for radio transmitters and receivers. The most common type of piezoelectric resonator used is the quartz crystal, so oscillator circuits incorporating them became known as crystal oscillators, but other piezoelectric materials including polycrystalline ceramics are used in similar circuits.
Quartz crystals are manufactured for frequencies from a few tens of kilohertz to hundreds of megahertz. More than two billion crystals are manufactured annually. Most are used for consumer devices such as wristwatches, clocks, radios, computers, and cellphones. Quartz crystals are also found inside test and measurement equipment, such as counters, signal generators, and oscilloscopes...
Piezoelectricity was discovered by Jacques and Pierre Curie in 1880. Paul Langevin first investigated quartz resonators for use in sonar during World War I. The first crystal-controlled oscillator, using a crystal of Rochelle salt, was built in 1917 and patented in 1918 by Alexander M. Nicholson at Bell Telephone Laboratories, although his priority was disputed by Walter Guyton Cady. Cady built the first quartz crystal oscillator in 1921. Other early innovators in quartz crystal oscillators include G. W. Pierce and Louis Essen.
Quartz crystal oscillators were developed for high-stability frequency references during the 1920s and 1930s. Prior to crystals, radio stations controlled their frequency with tuned circuits, which could easily drift off frequency by 3-4 kHz. Since stations were assigned frequencies only 10 kHz apart, interference between adjacent stations due to frequency drift was common. In 1925 Westinghouse tried out a crystal oscillator in its flagship station KDKA, and by 1926 quartz crystals were used to control the frequency of many broadcasting stations and were popular with amateur radio operators. In 1928, Warren Marrison (of Bell Telephone Laboratories) developed the first quartz crystal clock...
Using what are now considered primitive methods, about 100,000 crystal units were produced in the United States during 1939. Through World War II crystals were made from natural quartz crystal, virtually all from Brazil. Shortages of crystals during the war caused by the demand for accurate frequency control of military and naval radios and radars spurred postwar research into culturing synthetic quartz, and by 1950 a hydrothermal process for growing quartz crystals on a commercial scale was developed at Bell Laboratories. By the 1970s virtually all crystals used in electronics were synthetic...

We dug some amazing quartz crystals the other day here in Virginia! These crystals are water clear, and they are very "beautiful beautiful"! It seems like I said that 100 times! I hope everyone enjoys the video!! I hope that in time, I will be able to produce better movies with better programs and video gear!!
These beautiful clear quartz crystals are found locally here in Virginia! The crystals are found in the residual soil with little effort needed to find them! Simply dig, sift, and wahlah! These crystals are found in what used to be Alpine-Type Fissures! The crystals have long since weathered out and broken away from the main host rock (Red/white Sandstone)! Most of the points are single clear crystals ranging from .5" to 1" and the largest coming in at 3inches!!!! The clarity of these crystals resemble the well liked Arkansas quartz that have been a collectors favorite for many years! Even though the size is smaller, the clarity and size make these perfect for wire wrappers and others interested in jewelry! We are sure that this place has more hidden secrets than we know! Double terminated crystals can be found at this location! A lot of the quartz crystals contain fractures that have allowed hematite to seep into them creating a very unique yellow, red, orange look inside of the crystals! The plates that are found contain so much hematite that the cleaning process is very difficult, so we usually just enjoy them as they are found! Enjoy the pictures!! More will come in time!!!

www.minecristal.ca Stay informed about our new videos: subscribe to our YouTube channel "Mine Cristal". This mine is located in Bonsecours, Quebec, Canada. Photos and video clips shown here date from 1989 - 2012. The open-pit mine produces splendid quartz crystals with exceptional clarity. The largest single crystals measure 60 cm (24 inches) in length. Since mining began in 1989, 32 types, or morphologies of quartz crystals have been catalogued. Geological research into the origins of these crystals has revealed that they formed at this location some 300 million years ago under extreme conditions of heat and pressure. We harvest crystals in the mine only as needed, to supply our store with a sufficient quantity of quartz crystals.
Exceptionally (for a mine), we harvest all the crystals by hand and without the use of dynamite. It is a privilege for us to participate in the discovery and extraction of these true gems of nature. The extraction process is done in a manner which respects both the environment and the crystals: we endeavor to keep the crystals whole and in a pristine state. In the museum and the store, our crystals are presented in an untouched, natural state. Amazingly, each crystal is an intricate work of art made by Nature; no two are alike and this makes them even more fascinating! Mine Cristal is considered by experts to be a “geological gem,” one of Canada’s great natural sites, due to it’s unique and abundant mineralogical deposits.

Woo! Haven't added anything here in awhile so here's a song cover thing. The lyrics are written by me but otherwise those and my voice are all I own. Enjoy.
Lyrics:
This is Rose Quartz,
To the Homeworld
Here to say that I’m completely through and no longer want this stance
For the Earth deserves much better
And every part of me is screaming don’t kill her
I’m not going to be tied to your rules
Come at me if you if you think you can win this dual
Let’s go, it’s me vs you
Let’s go, I’m not going to loose
Go ahead and try to take her if you’re able
Can’t you see what you’re doing is unstable?
Don’t underestimate me or you will fail
Because I’m not something that’s so frail
You’re not going to stop what you’ve created
So I won’t hold back from what’s fated
If you think you can win then come and take it
But you will not crush my unyielding spirit
For I am made
Of devotion of
Devotion, devotion, devotion
This is who we are
This is who I am
And if you think you can stop me
Then you need to rethink your plans
I won’t back down so easy
So try to comprehend
That I won’t let you hurt this planet
And I won’t let you hurt my friends
Go ahead and try to take her if you’re able
Can’t you see what you’re doing is unstable?
I can see all around me this world’s beauty
But you’re all so blinded by your duty
And everything I do, I do for them
I can’t sit by as you mistreat these gems
I am her knight
I am their shield
I am a visionary
I am made
Of devotion of
(And it’s stronger than you)
Devotion, devotion, devotion
(And it’s stronger than you)
Devotion, devotion, devotion
(And it’s stronger than you)
Devotion, devotion, devotion

Let’s go, I’m not going to loose
Go ahead and try to take her if you’re able
Can’t you see what you’re doing is unstable?
Don’t underestimate me or you will fail
Because I’m not something that’s so frail
You’re not going to stop what you’ve created
So I won’t hold back from what’s fated
If you think you can win then come and take it
But you will not crush my unyielding spirit
For I am made
Of devotion of
Devotion, devotion, devotion
This is who we are
This is who I am
And if you think you can stop me
Then you need to rethink your plans
I won’t back down so easy
So try to comprehend
That I won’t let you hurt this planet
And I won’t let you hurt my friends
Go ahead and try to take her if you’re able
Can’t you see what you’re doing is unstable?
I can see all around me this world’s beauty
But you’re all so blinded by your duty
And everything I do, I do for them
I can’t sit by as you mistreat these gems
I am her knight
I am their shield
I am a visionary
I am made
Of devotion of
(And it’s stronger than you)
Devotion, devotion, devotion
(And it’s stronger than you)
Devotion, devotion, devotion
(And it’s stronger than you)
Devotion, devotion, devotion
