Tim Peake's father has spoken of his pride after watching the Russian rocket that will carry his astronaut son into space being lifted onto its launch pad. Nigel Peake and his wife Angela stood yards away from the 162-ft long Soyuz FG rocket as it was slowly manoeuvred into position ready for blast off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Mr Peake, from Chichester, said: "We're immensely proud. As you can imagine, it's quite surreal to think you're the father of an astronaut, especially a British astronaut. So we're very, very proud, and just a little bit over-awed by the whole operation."

British astronaut is the first British man to journey into space, where he will spend the next six months living in orbit
This is the moment that British astronaut Tim Peake set off his historic journey to the International Space Station.
As the world watched, Major Tim blasted off from a spacepor t in Kazakhstan aboard a Soyuz rocket, alongside Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko and American astronaut Tim Kopra.
The crew reached orbit in just ten minutes, but will take a further six hours to reach the ISS.
Tim will spend the next six months living in orbit, where he will conduct a number of scientific experiments and experience the effects of living in zero gravity.
He is also going to run the London Marathon in space, using his iPad to virtually run through the streets of London.
The astronaut and family man has captured the hearts of the nation.
Elton John tweeted the astronaut just a few hours before launch, referencing his iconic 1970s track ‘Rocket Man’.
Elton wrote: “From one Rocket Man to another, good luck @astro_timpeake with your launch and mission!
Tim is not actually the first Brit to journey into space, because this honour belongs to Helen Sharman.
She spent eight days living aboard the Mir space station in 1991.

Hilarious moment astronaut Tim Peake's son missed saying farewell to his father because he was playing on his phone (until Mum snatched it away!)
Astronaut Tim Peake's son had gathered with his family to say farewell
But instead of waving to his father, the boy was engrossed on his phone
When his mother realises, she snatches the cellphone from his hands
But it came too late - his father had turned away to board his spaceship
Major Peake today became the first British astronaut to be sent to the ISS
Engrossed in a game on his phone despite the emotion of his father's final farewell, this is the hilarious moment British astronaut Tim Peake's son missed his chance to say goodbye.
The young boy was filmed playing on his phone next to friends and family who are seen waving his father off to space for the next six months.
At the last minute his mother notices he is preoccupied and snatches the phone from his hands.
But her efforts are in vain - the young boy looks up to offer a quick wave only to discover his father has already walked away.
Mr Peake, from Chichester, West Sussex, was waving goodbye to family and supporters before boarding a launch that will take him to the International Space Station.
The married father of two has spent six years in training for the mission, which will see him spend six months aboard the ISS.
Before the launch, Major Peake was also given three songs he could listen to. He chose Queen's Don't Stop Me Now, U2's Beautiful Day and Coldplay's A Sky Full of Stars.
And on the musical theme, following on from the launch, Elton John tweeted: 'From one Rocket Man to another, good luck @astro_timepeake with your launch and mission! #Principia #spacerocks'
Major Peake said: 'I don't think anything can truly prepare you for that moment and that will occur in the Soyuz spacecraft once we get injected into orbit.
'I'll be able to look out the right window and see the beautiful view of Planet Earth.
'We've been so busy focused on this mission that I kind of forgot Christmas was just over a week away. Our thoughts will be with everybody on Earth enjoying Christmas, and with our friends and family, of course.'
wn.com/Hilarious Moment Astronaut Tim Peake's Son Missed Saying Farewell To His Father

A Russian Soyuz rocket carrying a three-man international crew, including Britain's first official astronaut, Tim Peake, blasted off on Tuesday (December 15) from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
The rocket carrying the Soyuz TMA-19M spaceship lifted off at 1703 p.m. local time (1103 GMT), beginning its six-hour journey to the International Space Station, and successfully reached its designated orbit about nine minutes later.
As well as Peake, the crew includes commander Yuri Malenchenko, a former Russian Air Force pilot and a veteran of long-duration space flights, and NASA astronaut Tim Kopra.
Peake, 43, a former army major who is on a six-month mission for the European Space Agency (ESA), became the first Briton to go into space since Helen Sharman travelled on a Soviet spacecraft for eight days in 1991.
He is also the first astronaut officially representing the British government and wearing a Union Jack flag on his arm.
The same trio of Malenchenko, Kopra and Peake are set to return to Earth on June 5 next year.

UK astronaut Tim Peake is ready to make his landmark flight to the International Space Station (ISS).
The ex-helicopter pilot - with American Tim Kopra and Russian Yuri Malenchenko - will launch on a Russian Soyuz rocket at Baikonur Cosmodrome, in Kazakhstan.
Mr Peake is the first official UK astronaut. Previous "British" astronauts have either had US citizenship and worked for Nasa or been privately funded.
On the ISS he will conduct experiments.
He will also carry out educational activities designed to get young people interested in science.
Fuelling of the rocket has begun ahead of the launch - set for 11:03 GMT - from Site 1 at Baikonur, the pad where Yuri Gagarin made the first historic human spaceflight in 1961.
